+ 0 moreHmmmmmm. . . . the plan looked nice in the drawing, but was pretty skimpy when installed. The black weed preventer they put in stuck out on a lot of the edges. They didn't reuse a lot of my plants that were established, and a good number of their new ones died. When I finally got hold of them - they did offer to replace - however I'd taken care of it by that time. The crew was personable and worked quickly. I would rate this service as OK. Certainly reasonable in pricing.

Description of Work: A long section of retaining wall collapsed during the storm last fall. They rebuilt the wall with better drainage. while I had them there they updated the rest of the yard. New mulch, trimming bushes, replaced plants, changed some stairs and repaired what needed to be done.

+ 1 moreI think they are wonderful. They are fast and the quality of work is great! I would definitely hire them again a recommend them to other. My only complaint was that I'm experiencing some heaving on the paved walkway. It started about 6 months after the install, but I have not yet contacted Better Yards to see about a repair. I'm sure they will be able to help me, since they were so nice during the install. If you hire these folks, you will NOT be disappointed.
Description of Work: They built two retaining walls, installed drain tile, regraded the yard, installed a paver walkway, and laid sod.

+ 1 moreIt went well. They notified us of the work date and time. They were here on time and worked quickly and efficiently. We now have a level gravel base surrounded by a wood frame upon which to place the shed.
Description of Work: My husband and I were purchasing a shed for our sloped back yard. We needed a gravel foundation for it. The project was more complicated because the yard is sloped in two directions. Paul and his crew put in a wood frame that was level and filled it with gravel.

The bid was provided to me when he made his site visit, he asked all the right questions, and kept in touch with me to make sure the installation date was on schedule. They came in and did the entire job in two days and also cleaned up the entire area. They asked me during the process how I wanted the wall laid out, and also the layout of the steps plus the walkway - very good communication by the team!
Description of Work: 90 feet of new retaining wall, new steps, and cobblestone walkway. Also put in some sod on a spot that was reconstructed.

+ 1 moreThe initial consultation took about an hour but Paul gave us a handwritten estimate right away at the end of the meeting. (We obtained an estimate from another highly-rated landscape company which took days to produce.) The actual work took approximately three days and the patio is exactly what we envisioned. It is beautiful and functional and allows us to enjoy our back yard much more than before. On the last day of work they also removed a large dead tree from our front yard at no extra cost!
Description of Work: Demolished old concrete patio; designed and constructed a new paver stone patio with much larger footprint and added dirt and sod to create a more level back yard. Added approximately 75 feet of large rocks at shoreline of pond to decrease erosion on slope and add visual interest.

+ -1 moreI've never wrote such a lengthy review - But in every step of the way from first meeting/design concept/installation/follow-up - the customer service, expertise and delivery were just outstanding. Could not recommend more highly - and will do so to anyone that asks about our landscaping!
Description of Work: Jessica met me at our new construction house and talked through what I liked and didn't like in plants/shrubs/etc. This is not something I'm very knowledgeable about - and Jessica took a lot of time explaining and giving me ideas. She came back a few days later with a wonderful drawing of her ideas for our landscaping with types of bushes/trees/plants/etc. Better Yards & Gardens bid was a bit more than another bid we received - but I felt so comfortable with Jessica really understanding what I wanted - we went with them. The crew came out multiple times - because we were new construction/grading - they wanted to make sure everything was done right with the grading and irrigation system (provided by another company). They had to clear a section of lawn above our septic that had not been done completely - I could really tell they strive for excellence. The whole team was there to plant/sod in one day - and the finished product is just amazing. Several neighbors and friends have already stopped by to say how great it looks - We are so pleased. Lastly - our driveway asphalting was delayed - and Better Yards & Gardens had been waiting to finish up the sod around the driveway edging to make sure everything looked and fit together well. I told them that if they didn't want to wait - they could just put that sod in - and we would trim it up in a few weeks after the asphalt was done. Jessica said no, that they will wait until the driveway is in and come back again and make sure it is done right.

+ 0 moreThey came a day earlier than promised after checking with us if that would work. They arrived about 9:00 a.m. and were finished by 4:30 p.m.. Paul's team are exceptional in that they work very hard and effectively. It was a genuine team effort and they completed everything to our satisfaction. They are all very pleasant and Paul checks to be sure he understands what precisely it is you want done. The landscaping looks good and the stepping stone pathway running from the deck and along the newly reconstructed flower beds is a great look. The new circular and larger bed with boulders around it will be made ready this fall for planting. The other smaller beds were constructed of timbers and they had rotted over time. The boulders look very nice.
Description of Work: Paul and his crew replaced old stones and did over old landscaping in the back. They also replaced old flower beds and added one larger new bed.

+ -1 moreThe job was necessary due an excessively wet area behind one corner of the house. When Paul and his assistant started their work, they encountered conditions in the soil that were a good deal wetter than anticipated, which reduced the efficiency of their equipment and made the shoveling and raking significantly more exhausting in the hot afternoon weather. Nevertheless, they forged ahead without complaint or suggestion to wait for drier conditions and completed the work well after their anticipated quitting time on a Friday for the contract price. It will take a few weeks to determine if the project cured the problem, but I am optimistic that it will be a success. Thanks Paul for a great effort.
Description of Work: The job required the creation of a slope away from the back of the house, a 45' long swale to catch the water running off from the slope, and a 3' perimeter of granite stones set against the back wall along the length of the slope.

+ 2 moreEverything was wonderful. Paul was very easy to work with. His crew was professional and pleasant. They completed the job in one day and made sure everything was cleaned up nice. After they left we had several neighbors come up and ask about the project and if we would recommend Better Yards and Gardens and we were able to say absolutely! Their quote was a little bit higher than others we had asked. However, Paul seemed to have more knowledge, experience, and was able to recognize our grading needed to be fixed, which other companies didn't even mention. It was well worth the extra money and we couldn't be happier with our experience with Better Yards and Gardens and we will use them for future landscape needs.
Description of Work: Remove rock and old landscape edging, prune 2 trees and remove 1 small tree, re-grade front and side of house, lay top soil and seed throughout front, redo landscape around deck and around front trees, and add new rock and mulch to landscaped areas as well as new bushes and plants.

+ 0 moreThey arrived on the day they said the would. Covered the driveway with boards to prevent problems. Removed the block from the old retaining wall and reinstalled new block. The clean up was amazing. The crew got it all done in less than 6 hours when other provider said it would take 4 to 5 days. They had to bring in more rock for the wall and they did it exactly as they said they would the next day. I wished I had hired them for prior work. I would not hesitate to call them again
Description of Work: Replaced my retaining wall on both sides of my 26 foot drive way with concrete block. The one side went the full length and the other side was terraced.

+ -1 moreBecause this was on the side of our home, Jessica realized that we did not want a major landscaping project. To help keep the costs down, she planted the area between the tree and our house and the new garden on either side of the tree with hostas that she divided, with my permission, and some plants that I had that were in a spot that got a bit too much light. Her quote and the ultimate price was much less than the estimate given to me by another provider. Their service was excellent. They were very professional. The project was completed in a timely fashion and I am pleased with the final product. .
Description of Work: When they graded our yard after building our home, they covered the bottom 10 inches of our oak tree. For the health of the tree, we dug a trench around the tree so that none of the bark was covered. Better Yards and Gardens but in large rocks on the side of the hole closest to the house so that we could maintain the grade. They then feather the other half of the hole so that the upslope was gradual rather than trench-like. They tied all of this into adjoining flower beds so that it flowed with the rest of the landscaping. They put in some wood chips and some grass seed to finish the task.

Second part of the project was the step side of the house that needed both 2 small retaining walls and steps and rock. Very nice finished project. We would recommend him and will use his services for additional landscape projects.

+ -1 moreI really hate to be "Debbie Downer", as this provider has amazing reviews, but my experience was less than ideal. I contacted this company for a quote. Based upon the reviews, the owner sounded amazing. However, his daughter, Jessica, showed up for our appointment. I let this go hoping that she would be just as great- due to association. She has a great personality, loved her energy. She suggested cornflowers, hostas and day lilies. I told her that I didn't care for any of those plants...which she made note of. She was kind enough to put a quote together, which included a concept drawing. This was done at no cost. On the day of our next meeting, I had to cancel last minute. She was very understanding and e-mailed the drawing/quote to me. This with the understanding that she would be out of town for 1 week and would follow-up on her return. The drawing included hostas and day lillies (plants I told her I didn't like), and I have not heard from her since. Seems like they are very busy and have a lot on their plate, so understand this. But the follow-up and attention to detail was poor. For me, those are the two major things that I look for when hiring a landscaper.
