Barnes Plumbing Co

Plumbing, Water Heaters, Drain Cleaning,

About us

Barnes Plumbing Co Inc. started in 1982 when Jeff and Bill Barnes decided they wanted to open their own shop. A flip of a coin decided who was going to be the President and Vice-President. Starting off in the basement of an apartment building near Franklin Ave. in Minneapolis, they soon outgrew the space and have since been operating in their own building near Dowling Ave and I-94. In August of 2010, Bill and Jeff Barnes made the hard decision to retire. The company was purchased by Michael Pemberton a long time employee of 10 years. Michael believes in the same principles that Bill and Jeff had with their company of being fair, honest and giving quality service. Barnes Plumbing relies mostly on word-of-mouth referrals. They have been successful in this way because of the way they choose to run their business. Fair, Honest, Quality Service. For over three decades, Barnes Plumbing has stood by quality work, fair pricing and superior service to satisfy the plumbing and heating needs of customers.

We were given a two hour range for him to arrive, and he showed up right away. He walked us through and showed us everything that was going on and what he had to do. Very nice guy. I would absolutely use them again.

At 10 am, I called with a request to hook up a washing machine and gas dryer and install a utility sink and its facuet and drain. By 12:30, not only had the plumber arrived, but completed all the work! And at a price that was CONSIDERABLY less than another estimate I had received.H

Mike the plumber (not to be confused with Mike the owner) called me back immediately and told me he could be here in 15 minutes. He showed up on time and quickly sized up the situation and went to work. In addition to installing the new plumbing he also upgraded some of the existing parts. Mike was friendly and efficient. He did a really good job of cleaning up when he was done and gave me some advice on the care and feeding of my new plumbing. Mike did a great job. Barnes Plumbing did a great job.
Description of Work: After installing a new bathroom sink and countertop, I attempted to, and failed, to do the plumbing work to hook up the sink. I called Barnes Plumbing to do the sink plumbing hook up.

Due to my house being old there were several issues, modifications for the sink and dishwasher. There was a problem with the lower panel on the dishwasher that didn't fit. Mike came back and made sure that it was satisfactory and looked great. I have asked Mike to give me an estimate on several other plumbing jobs. I certainly expect to have him back to do more work. Tom and Mike made sure everything was done to my satisfaction. One thing with plumbing, things are done different depending the plumer and the time period the previous work was done. If they don't come to the house to do an estimate time may vary. because of complications.
Description of Work: Barnes Plumbing is a very reliable professional company. I had a dishwasher, garbage disposal, double sink, and faucet removed; dishwasher, double sink and faucet installed . Because my house was built in 1954 there were some problems, but all were addressed, I am completely satisfied. I feel they went way beyond when compared where another company would go.

Mike came on time, very business like, professional and personable. He asked to look at the problems and then went to work. It didn't take as long as I thought it would. We walked arounde the house and talked about some other plumbing issues that will come up in the future. He was great. I would definately hire this company again.

We were highly pleased with all aspects of the job. When I first called Barnes Plumbing, they were friendly and helpful on the telephone, and were responsive in setting up the appointment a couple of days away. The technician, Tom, was on time, friendly, courteous, and professional. He did the installation in an appropriate time, and did a good job. We would definitely use Barnes Plumbing for future plumbing work.

The esperience from start to finish was excellent, very painless.
Description of Work: Discovered our water heater was leaking on a wednesday night, called Barnes early Thursday morning and was able to schedule a replacment appoint for later that same day. The person who took my call was very knowledgeable and gathered information from the current water heater and was able to set up everything from the phone call. The two man crew arrived early afternoon and completed the job in about two hours or less. Very good service.

I anticipated a quick installation, which was not to be the case. The space where the dishwasher was to go had once contained a radiator. The radiator was long gone, but not the stub of its supply pipe, sticking up out of the floor. Our old dishwasher fit over this stub, but not the Bosch. At the plumber's suggestion, I worked on making a wooden platform to elevate the new dishwasher, while the plumber replaced the shutoffs and prepared the dishwasher. It took us both longer than I had anticipated, and I had to lower the platform to get the thing to fit in the opening at all. In the end, it was a very close fit. The alternative, to open the basement ceiling and remove the radiator stub, would have been enormously more expensive. I was happy with the job in every respect except (1) the already-mentioned long time it took, and (2) I would have preferred ball-valve shutoffs to the gate valves I got. They are easier to operate, and I have had experiences with shutoffs that got so heavily limed up that they would no longer close all the way. Since the dishwasher plumbing is all on the hot water side, if in the future the new shutoffs fail, or I'm not strong enough to close them all the way, I can use the ball-valve shutoff at the water heater and not have to shut off the whole house's water supply.
Description of Work: Installed a new Bosch dishwasher. Replaced the existing under-the-sink shutoffs for the hot water supplies to both the sink and dishwasher, because the existing ones were too close to the cabinet wall for re-use with the new supply hose. Supplied power to the dishwasher through a power cord (rather than hardwiring), which was ok because I already had an outlet under the sink that was on a dedicated circuit (formerly used for a hot water dispenser).

I have used Barnes Plumbing for over 15 years and they really take the time to do repairs right. No followups ever necessary. Sometimes their plumbing installations are a work of art. All piping in perfect alignment and arranged. Sodering perfection and never a mess left behind. Quality work at a slightly higher price than the average. Well worth it !!!

Mike came, all business but very personable, too. According to my husband (I was elsewhere in the house), Mike was knowledgeable, skilled, and honest (for example, he made no promises that the disposal would continue to work -- we were amazed that he got it working at all). He replaced two faucet seals and ran the drain. No leaks! Fast-draining sink! Jury-rigged disposal that can take care of small amounts of food! Mike did not waste time nor try to sell us on more services (no "check your other drains? your water heater? your outside faucets?"). When we remodel the kitchen later this year, we'll definitely be asking Barnes to bid on the plumbing work.
Description of Work: Our kitchen faucet was leaking in two places and the sink was taking its precious time in draining (our garbage disposal went on the blink years ago & we decided not to fix or replace it until we could afford to remodel) so we called Barnes. We got an appointment within 48 hours since this was not an emergency.

Very pleased with all aspects. Spoke on the phone with Mike in the morning to discuss the problem and repair needed, as well as estimated cost; he was knowledgable, helpful and friendly. Appointment made for approximate arrival time 11-12 that day. Around 11:15 Cheryl called to advise that Tom was on his way. Tom was friendly and professional. As with many things in our 1960s home, the item to be replaced was not "standard" and the job turned out to be more difficult than anticipated; however, Tom was able to obtain the necessary parts and get the job done. The price was very reasonable given the difficulty of the situation. Would definitely use Barnes Plumbing again!

Discovered a leaking shutoff valve to the toilet. I first called one of the big name plumbing companies who quoted me an outrageous price just to show up at my door. Parts and labor would be additional. They also said it would take two hours to get to my house which would then make it an "off hours" extra charge call. I then consulted Angie's List and found Barnes Plumbing. They quoted me a more reasonable price on the phone and said they'd have someone there in 15 minutes. Ten minutes later Tom was at the door. Tom quickly sized up the problem; replaced the parts that needed replacing and did a nice job of cleaning up after himself. I would highly recommend Barnes Plumbing for any plumbing job around the house.

We had yet another basement pipe leak, thanks to the lovely Plymouth water quality. Price was reasonable (used Angie's List $20 coupon), they came right away in the morning (I called late the night before), fixed the leak and offered a very reasonable solution for how to solve this problem entirely, which I appreciated -- they could have just fixed the leak and gone on their way. Conversely, we'd had quotes in the past by other plumbers to replace all the piping throughout our whole house. Barnes' proposal makes way more sense and way more reasonable cost. They explained things thoroughly and gave background information that was helpful. Pleasant and professional. Worked quickly.

I had a problem recently with noisy heat radiators and I called Barnes Plumbing to fix the problem. The plumber, Mike, arrived on time, spent some time diagnosing the problem, and fixed it completely. He discovered a leak in the system, corrected it, and released air from the system. He did a great job and even volunteered to shovel my walk. I have used this company before to replace a water conditioning unit and was very happy with their service. I highly recommend this company.

Mike arrived as scheduled. He explained what was causing the noises, and did a thorough cleaning of the boiler. He told us what to watch for in ter,ms of problems with this older boiler, and how codes were changing in the future. He explained what we could expect in a newer boiler. He was interested, personable, professional and informative. We have used Barnes before (installing a water heater), and have been very satisfied on both occasions.

I had a drain-cleaning need. Unfortunately, the plumber who came worked tirelessly and was unable to clear the clog after a couple of hours--he felt bad, but I was still billed $160.00 The equipment Barnes has includes snakes that reach 35'--my clog was about 50' away--I used SOS Drain Cleaning the next day and they removed the clog within 15 minutes--they had a better tool. I was disappointed that when I called Barnes, I was not given details about how their equipment couldn't perform like a drain-cleaning service. How was I to know what the difference was? I don't know this space of industry. I was also told that my Angie's list incentive would be applied to the invoice and it was not--I had to call again to get it applied. I did voice my concern with a dispatcher/manager, and she was kind enough to remove another $20--in addition to the Angie's list discount--and I realize that someone has to pay for the time and efforts of the plumber who came and spent that time at my home, but a company like Barnes who wants to be used again and again--and get high marks/grades, should probably bear more of the risk of not being able to solve a problem--not just charging the same price and only reducing the price when a customer complains. I think offering a 50% discount would be appropriate--and in my business practices, I usually eat such costs b/c I want to be viewed as being paid to actually solve problems, not just spin wheels with apologies that follow. I really liked the plumber, and the dispatcher/manager was very nice--if I need a plumber, I would probably call Barnes again, but I'd go with a drain-cleaning service any day....I ended up paying about half of what I was billed by Barnes to get the clog removed by SOS.

Very good. The problem lies in the fixture originally installed by previous owners. I appreciate their willingness to make it work, or try to, even with the long time period between visits.
Description of Work: My guest bathroom shower handle fixture would not turn off, leaving water running in the hot position. After an emergency shut-off, Barnes came out (very prompt phone service and scheduling). Handle and screw piece was worked on, tested and left in working order. As this shower is never used (perhaps 3 times total since fixed), I was unaware that the issue returned. After calling Barnes again to discuss the need for a second repair (almost a year to the date), they came out, refitted the fixture, suggested replacing the original fixture (which would be a large undertaking due to position of pipes behind shower unit) and did not charge me for the 2nd repair. During the original first visit, I had several questions regarding other issues in my old house and they patiently went through options I had available and suggestions for the improvements I have yet to undertake.
