Barnes Plumbing Co Inc. started in 1982 when Jeff and Bill Barnes decided they wanted to open their own shop. A flip of a coin decided who was going to be the President and Vice-President. Starting off in the basement of an apartment building near Franklin Ave. in Minneapolis, they soon outgrew the space and have since been operating in their own building near Dowling Ave and I-94. In August of 2010, Bill and Jeff Barnes made the hard decision to retire. The company was purchased by Michael Pemberton a long time employee of 10 years. Michael believes in the same principles that Bill and Jeff had with their company of being fair, honest and giving quality service. Barnes Plumbing relies mostly on word-of-mouth referrals. They have been successful in this way because of the way they choose to run their business. Fair, Honest, Quality Service. For over three decades, Barnes Plumbing has stood by quality work, fair pricing and superior service to satisfy the plumbing and heating needs of customers.

Plumbing repairs & remodeling. Water heaters. New construction. Valve testing. Toilet replacement. Update fixtures. Radiators. Boilers. Floor heat. Baseboards.
Joe was able to come out about 2 hours after the call and helped me understand what the correct options would be. He updated the fittings, and coiled the copper the way it should have originally been done. Updated a shut-off valve as well as the new rigid metal duct to vent the dryer. The price felt slightly high although probably fair for the work done. We appreciated the promptness very much and have enjoyed getting to know this company and Joe. He remembered the work he had done for us a few years ago and is a very friendly person to have in our home.
Description of Work: Had a gas leak from our clothes dryer; Centerpoint had to come out to immediately turn off & tag. Needed a new connection for the gas line into the dryer and also wanted to update the ducting to code-compliant rigid metal as well.

I talked to Jennifer late on Monday and was impressed with her professionalism. We were contacted and a time was set for the next day.
Description of Work: "Joe" reset our toilet as it was leaking near the base. We live in a 3rd floor condo and were very concerned about it leaking below so we were thrilled to call late Monday and get service on Tuesday. I would recommend them and call them again without hesitation. Thank you Barnes Plumbing!

We've used Barnes before and been very satisfied, so they were my first choice when the funny sound coming from the basement turned out to be a pipe coming out of the water heater that was "showering" the furnace room. We were probably lucky that it happened during regular business hours. Nevertheless, they had someone out within an hour of my call, and the water was back on about an hour's work after that. We continue to be VERY satisfied with their service and quality of work, and recommend them without hesitation.

My wife was here when one piece of work was done, while I was here when another piece of work - that is yet to be completed - was being done. The person who did the work seemed very good and competent, and was very nice to deal with. I have seen his work and it looks good. We are happy with what they have done for us.

So far, so good. When he walked through the basement he would point out that I had a combination of things that might need to be taken care of, and it seemed like he was trying to drum up business. I asked him to go ahead and send me an estimate but if there's not anything that needs to be fixed then I don't plan on getting it done.

the free estimate was done the morning after my initial phone call. I was very impressed with his professionalism (introducing himself, being careful not to track dirt from outside, etc.). the estimate was sent to me by email within a few days and was able to set up the work day that worked with my schedule. the plumber was able to start 1 1/2 hours earlier than planned. he did an excellent job of replacing the old shower fixture with a new one. he left everything very clean. I am very pleased.
Description of Work: I had an old, outdated shower fixture replaced. it was a complicated job because he had to cut out part of the fiberglas shower stall around the faucet opening.

Joe, the self-described "B.K." (boss's kid), replaced an old, corroded drain pipe that had burst just below the basement ceiling. Joe was a wizard, and did a better job than I thought anyone would be able to. He even managed to replace a broken T-joint in the vent pipe behind the sink without having to knock out our cabinets -- man, was I grateful for that one. He also did a couple of little extras for us, like adding shutoff valves to the water lines under the sink and capping a vent line that wasn't being used. He was even a nice guy to boot. All work was accomplished the same day I called. I definitely recommend this company and especially that plumber.

The only down side to my experience with Barnes was that when Luke quoted me a fee, he told me $500-$600. When I called Barnes the next day, I was told my total bill was $835.50 ($235.50 more than I was quoted). I was upset that the cost was $200 more than I was quoted, but I am guessing that Luke may have been quoting me the price on the water heater alone (which was $464). He did good work and was very accomodating so I didn't want to complain too much. The office gal did agree to lower the cost to a flat $800 which was nice, but still over the $200 quote I was given.
Description of Work: My water heater went out. The same day I called Barnes, Luke one of their plumbers, came out to my condo and told me the water heater could not be repaired, but needed to be replaced. He said he could get the job done that same day but he needed to come back after taking care of another job, which was fine. Luke did great work and installed the new water heater better than the old one had been. His plan to reposition it gave me more space in the utility closet. I was grateful for that.

After several months of putting off working on the drain myself, it finally became a necessity after water was barely draining from the laundry tub. Due to the immediate need, I called in Barnes Plumbing to get it done fast. They came the same day and had the drain flowing freely. The plumber also offered some helpful advice on drain maintenance.

Chris came out and gave me quote for a gas water heater. However, he said he could not install it without a liner in the chimney (our house is old and does not have one). He talked through several options with me, including an electric water heater and power vented water heater. He was very helpful and resourceful in thinking through the problem. Chris came back when he was scheduled and did a great job with the water heater. The bid he put in was about $300 lower than the next close bid. I have had no problems. I went back to Barnes to service my boiler yesterday. Same professional and courteous service. They'll be the guys we call with our plumbing and heating problems.

I called Barnes Plumbing about a backed up main house drain based on their Angie's List rating. When I told them the problem was with my main house drain, they redirected me to a drain-specializing business that could better meet my needs. (Both companies whose numbers they gave me are well rated on Angie's List.)

This is a terrific company. I made an appointment to have some work done during a kitchen remodeling. The plumber's name was Zack and he arrived right on time and started work. He expected to be there 2-3 hours. Ours is an old house and most of the plumbing is the old lead pipes which have gotten very corroded and soft. When Zack started working in the basement to do what was necessary to hook up the sink and dishwasher, the pipe fell apart. What started out as a simple procedure quickly became a huge job. Zack stayed for about 10 hours that day to get a good start on replacing the necessary lead pipes in the basement and kitchen, and then came back the next day to finish and to replace a couple of pipes leading up to the shower in the bathroom, which had terrible water pressure. The result was that we had a decent shower for the first time EVER, and all the old pipes in the basement have been replaced. The other really wonderful thing this company did was take into account that the cost of all this work was literally 10 times the amount we had expected it to be, and allowed us to pay it in 90 days rather than immediately. We have used them again very recently for some drain problems, and their service has again been great.

They replaced the valve to the water main last February and it developed a leak. They came out at a time that was convenient for me and realized that the valve had cracked. The city was unable to come out right away to turn off the water at the street, so, with my permission, our plumber replaced the valve on the fly. He got a little wet, there was minimal water on the unfinished basement floor, and he saved me the time of having to come back (this is our rental property) and the cost the city would have charged to turn off the water. The work was all performed under their warranty, so it didn't cost a thing. We have been very happy with their service both times we've used them. We'll definitely call them again.

We noticed a leak from our bathroom at 930 AM. I called Barnes first and spoke to Sheryl, who said she would try our best to find someone to help us before we left for a flight at noon. She called me back within 10 minutes to let us know someone would come to help between 1030 and 1100. Chris arrived at 1015, he replaced the trap and was out the door in less than an hour.

The drain to my main from my laundry/kitchen area stopped up over the weekend. Reyn checked the drain area, determined that snaking was needed, then proceeded to snake out part of the line. Next, he added Thrift to the line to make sure it cleaned out well and gave me instructions on additional use of the product. Reyn also tried repairing a leaky outside faucet, but determined that it would require replacement which would mean cutting into the basement ceiling, so I decided to hold on that project. I was very impressed by the efficiency displayed in the work and would recommend Barnes to anyone.

We discovered that our basement bathroom (which we rarely go into) had mold on the walls and water on the floor. We found Barnes Plumbing here on Angieslist, and they did not disappoint. Reyn showed up right on time and did everything he could to try and find the leaky pipe. Unfortunately for us, there were no leaks at all -- the water seems to have come in from outside (through the basement window or the foundation wall). Reyn even went outside to examine the gutters, etc. and advise me on what I should do next. Very professional and very friendly. I would definitely use this company again and will recommend them to friends.
Description of Work: Reyn came out to look for a leak in our pipes, since we had water (and mold! yikes!) in the basement. He clearly knows his stuff; it was like having someone from the show "house detective" come over.

Originally I thought Barnes did a great job, and I gave them an absolutely glowing report. On July 7, 2009, they snaked out my kitchen drain and my basement floor drain, among other work, for a total of $312.50. Barnes even called me a few weeks after my first experience to ask if they could use my original report for a reference on another professional site and I gave them full permission to do so since they seemed like such a great company. However, less than 2 months later, the floor drain in the basement started backing up and the kitchen sink started draining very slowly, again. On the evening of 8/25/09, I called Barnes Plumbing to ask if they could send someone back to check out the problem and re-do the work, if necessary. I was not at all dissatisfied with Barnes when I called them on the 25th, I just wanted to talk to them about the fact that the same problem seemed to be happening. The plumber said he'd have someone call me in the morning, and I said that would be fine since the problem didn?t seem to be urgent. Barnes called me back on 8/26, but the person I spoke with said the problem was likely roots or something between the floor drain and the street. Barnes did not offer to send someone out to check when I asked. They said they really didn't have the equipment necessary to handle clearing the main drain line and that I needed to call a drain company. I asked for a recommendation and they gave me 2 names. At this point I was still satisfied with Barnes, because I trusted their judgment and professionalism from my initial experience. I assumed a drain expert would find that tree roots or something had, in fact, clogged the main drain line. I called both drain companies they recommended and scheduled work with the company that had the soonest available appointment. A workman from the drain company came to my home on 8/28, investigated the problem and said that the water backup was not in the main line between the street and the floor drain, but that it was between the kitchen sink and the floor drain-- one of the sections Barnes charged me to snake out in the first place. I told him that Barnes had already snaked that part and asked him if her was certain; he said he was. The drain workman tested his idea by running water from several other sinks in the basement and house for about 15 minutes and flushing 2 toilets that are all on different parts of the drain system than the kitchen sink. The floor drain never backed up while running water from these other locations. However, as soon as he started running water in the kitchen sink, the water started rising in the floor drain. I was a little disappointed with Barnes at this information but still not dissatisfied, because I assumed another phone call would make everything right. I asked the drain person to wait while I called Barnes so he could explain what he found directly to them. I honestly believed that Barnes would make good on their initial work, send someone out again and there'd be no further issue. Instead, the Barnes plumber who did my initial work talked to the drain workman and said Barnes does not warranty their work, and that I?d need to pay to have the snaking done again. The Barnes plumber said he wouldn't even be able to think about the problem until Monday, 8/31, at the earliest. I was utterly dumbfounded-- especially since my previous interactions with Barnes had been so positive. I ended up paying the drain company $95.00 on 8/28 to re-do all?not some, but all-- of the snaking work that Barnes had already charged me for. I first made sure that the drain company, at least, did stand behind their work and provide a customer warranty, which they do. The drain person showed me all the gunk and stuff that came out of the section of drain between the kitchen sink and the floor drain and it was instantly clear to me that Barnes had done a very poor job of the snaking in the first place. So now I am very dissatisfied with Barnes, and I wish I had not given them permission to use my first Angie's List report on another site. I will never do that for another company after this experience. There is no way I would recommend Barnes Plumbing to a member of Angie's List, friend or colleague. I still fully expect Barnes to pay me back for the extra $95.00 I spent to fix the same drain problem I paid them for, but even if they do so I don?t think I will use or recommend Barnes in the future. I don?t think a customer should be told they?re out of luck after talking politely to a company 3 times about a continuing problem the customer paid to have fixed, nor should the company refuse to make good on their work when a workman from a different company they recommended tells them that the problem is the same, and was not fixed the first time.
Description of Work: Snaked out bad floor drain, capped old waste line. Installed shut-off valves for kitchen water, replaced aerators as needed.
