Barnes Plumbing Co Inc. started in 1982 when Jeff and Bill Barnes decided they wanted to open their own shop. A flip of a coin decided who was going to be the President and Vice-President. Starting off in the basement of an apartment building near Franklin Ave. in Minneapolis, they soon outgrew the space and have since been operating in their own building near Dowling Ave and I-94. In August of 2010, Bill and Jeff Barnes made the hard decision to retire. The company was purchased by Michael Pemberton a long time employee of 10 years. Michael believes in the same principles that Bill and Jeff had with their company of being fair, honest and giving quality service. Barnes Plumbing relies mostly on word-of-mouth referrals. They have been successful in this way because of the way they choose to run their business. Fair, Honest, Quality Service. For over three decades, Barnes Plumbing has stood by quality work, fair pricing and superior service to satisfy the plumbing and heating needs of customers.

The plumber was punctual and helpful. Since we did not know the exact source of the leak, Barnes told us it was "investigatory" and a charge for the visit would be charged. Ultimately it took him a little over an hour to find the source, and the charge was not much more than for the basic visit. We did not have an access panel to our plumbing in our upstairs bathroom, so he cut one. He was careful to make it a standard size (12" x 12") so we could simply install an access panel (which we needed anyway, according to code) without more cutting. He did not locate the leak there. He then needed to cut a hole in the ceiling of the kitchen, where the water was, to see if he could tell where the leak was. He was able to determine that it was most likely a problem with the caulking in the tub from the location of the water stains. He was efficient and helpful. Although the cleanup could have been a little better, he did fairly well. Cutting a hole in the kitchen ceiling was pretty messy, and there was quite a bit of dust around that would have been hard to get without a lot of dusting. He did cover the surfaces directly under his work.
Description of Work: Wet spot in kitchen ceiling below the upstairs bathroom. The plumber came to find the source of the leak.

I called Barnes Plumbing to deal with some leaking that I had noticed in our basement, most likely coming from the second floor bathroom. Even though this was not an emergency call, a plumber was able to come the next day. He called to confirm the appointment that morning and arrived promptly. He suggested an easier, less expensive solution than might have been done with this problem. Two weeks later, I can see that this solution worked perfectly and was one-tenth the cost.
Description of Work: The plumber removed the toilet, cleaned the area of an old repair, and reseated the toilet.

On Saturday we discovered that the carpet near our second floor radiator was wet, and then saw water trickling down to the first floor. They agreed to come first thing Sunday, showed up promptly at 9 a.m. - and then a quick assessment showed that the problem was simply a loose part on our old radiator. He just tightened it up. Since it only took a couple of minutes to identify and resolve, he was so kind that he didn't even charge us. Another company probably would've charged us a minimum one-hour charge just for coming out - and we offered to pay - but he wouldn't accept since it was so minor. We will definitely use them in the future!

Overall it cost about what I thought because plumbers are expensive and in an old house, simple problems get complicated sometimes. I was happy with the work and the service level
Description of Work: Guy was on time and despite several problems, due to the age of the house, he was able to come up with a solution and it worked well as well as he gave me some ideas on fixing another probem. Issue was installing a toilet but the floor base was broken, otherwise it would have been simple.

Len was our technician and he was friendly and informative. It took two hours to fix a dripping faucet, batton down an under the sink water filter that was acting up, and investigate the problem with the basement shower. Len gave us a do-it-yourself fix that we could try on the basement shower while he checked in on an estimate for replacing the shower head and re-routing it. He called back within an hour with the estimate, which seemed pretty reasonable. Good, friendly, knowledgeable service.
Description of Work: We were looking for two minor repairs and an estimate on what it would take to make our very primitive basement shower operable again.

The plumber estimated that our job would take a day. It ended up taking nine days, start to finish. He had to cut numerous holes in walls and ceilings, which we understand, but one or both of us were on site for the entire time, and he didn't notify us where he was going to cut so we could put tarps down to contain the drywall dust. He didn't have a helper, so that increased the price for us because it took longer. We know he worked hard, but he probably wasn't experienced enough to work a job like this by himself.
Description of Work: Initially, we found a leak in the hot water supply going up from the utility room to the kitchen, so we called Barnes to fix it. Six hours later, after two trips to Menards and several calls back to the shop, the plumber determined that our entire house had been plumbed with polybutylene. Polybutylene is no longer manufactured, so he couldn't repair it. We ended up needing our whole house re-plumbed.

I was immediately impressed with this company on the phone. They were polite, patient, and knowledgeable. They immediately told me much they charge (mandatory 1 hour charge & truck fee) and then suggested that since I would be paying for an hour anyway, it would be a good time to think about replacing the toilet. When I said I wanted to do so, they recommended a couple of products and even told me that if I went with the first model, that I could get it cheaper at a home improvement store. They patiently answered all my questions and explained everything in detail. We went with a more expensive model that we couldn't get at the home improvement store. So they had us take one measurement to get the right size. I requested the taller toilet which was oblong rather than round. What I didn't think about was our bathroom is tiny and the toilet is right next to the door. So when the repairman arrived, he immediately suspected that the oblong toilet was too big for our tiny bathroom. He measured and sure enough....too big. He checked on what they had that would fit and said he would call to reschedule the next working day. I was worried I was going to be billed a full hour for the few minutes it took for the repairman to determine we had the wrong size toilet and then be billed again for the second time he came. The repairman squeezed us in the very next working day. He showed us the mistakes that had been made on the old installation and told us that was probably why it was leaking. He indicated the toilet had probably leaked for years before we moved in to the house. He took the time to do the installation correctly (he had to grind down the pipe to correct the height), fixed the seal and installed our new toilet. Not only were we very pleased with the work and the service, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I wouldn't have to argue with the company over the billing of the first visit since they didn't charge us for it. The work & product were top quality at a reasonable price. The service was also excellent. I was extremely pleased I chose this company (based on reviews on Angie's List!)
Description of Work: The pipe for the toilet leaked in the basement every time we flushed the toilet. When I called to request a repair, they suggested that it would be a good time to replace the toilet if that was something we were considering in the near future. So we bought a toilet from them and they came to do the repair and install. Our old toilet had been installed incorrectly and had probably been leaking for years so the repair man fixed the leak and did a proper installation. He even had to grind down the pipe because the height was incorrect.

Luke did a fantastic job on this project. We were able to schedule a visit the same day we called Barnes. Luke was on time, he was professional and courteous, and after replacing the old T&P valve on the heater, he found a clear answer to the problem with our sewage pipe. (Along the way, he gave us some helpful tips for dealing with pipes in the future.) He was flexible in scheduling a return visit to open up the floor and find the break in the pipe. In the meantime, he made sure we knew what water we could continue to use in the house without having problems. He came back and put up plastic, then got to work with the jackhammer to get through the floor to the pipe. (He let me have a go with the hammer. Heavy!) Followed the pipe to the break, about 13-15 feet from opening (as expected), got the old broken pipe out and replaced with plastic. Then, closed it all up, mixed new concrete and filled it in. He ended up working into the evening to get the job done. When done, he hauled away all the garbage. His shop works on a time and materials basis, and he had estimated the cost of the job, but came in below that. Everything is working great now. I couldn't be happier with the outcome of the the job. Price was great, service was great, and the work was well done. I am going to put Barnes Plumbing on my speed dial so that if we ever have another plumbing problem (and we will in our old house), I can reach them right away. You should too!

After being unable to unclog the toilet, I checked Angie's List and called Barnes. They were able to send Chris the same day. When the then unknow oblject could not be removed with a snake, Chris pulled the toilet, invented a hook from a clothes hanger and removed a comb! He also fixed my dripping bathtub faucet and replaced my shower head. He was friendly and efficient, left no mess. I'd call them again.

We had a clogged kitchen sink drain. Barnes came the same day I called and attempted to unclog the drain. However, the 40' snake they had was not long enough. So, they recommended a drain cleaning specialist company and gave me their phone number. I called that company and they came out the following day with their 80' long snake and got it unclogged. I asked Barnes for an invoice to pay and they said (paraphrasing), "We didn't help you, so you don't owe us anything". Actually the referral they gave me was a huge help. They are now my plumber of choice!

We were retiling our bathroom and decided to replace the bath and shower fixtures. I called a few plumbers on Angie's list and decided to hire Barnes plumbing based on their estimate and the fact they were easy to contact. Mike came and did a great job. We thought he would just replace the rough-in valve, but he ended up having to replace all of the plumbing because it wasn't copper. He worked non-stop for 2 hours, laying down 2 lines of copper pipe behind the shower/tub wall, installing shutoff valves, and installing a shower-head, bathtub faucet, and of course the new rough-in valve. After he left, I noticed a bit of moisture beneath one of the shutoff valves. Since it was still there a few days later, I called the company again and Mike came back and fixed it without any complaints or the attitude one sometimes gets from contractors when they have to come back. In fact, Mike is so cheerful and easygoing that I was taken aback initially. What, a happy contractor? He was a real pleasure to work with, as was Cheryl, who always answers the phone and is very professional. Best of all, I've never had such a good price from a plumbing company. I will definitely use them in the future.

When I called Barnes Plumbing to request an estimate, I was able to get an appointment just a couple days later. Mike showed up promptly at the expected time. We reviewed all the elements I envisioned for the project. He was very upfront about the additional cost of a high efficiency boiler like the Alpine versus a regular cast iron boiler. A few days later I received a bid from their office. The bid itself was probably the least detailed of any I had received for the project, so I was a tad worried about that. But on the other hand, they had the lowest fixed price and were in the top 2 on technical merits (assuming everything discussed in my first conversation with Mike would hold true). After clarifying the bid with their office, we scheduled an install date based on my preference. Mike from the original meeting came and did almost all the work himself, aside from contracting out electrical and through-foundation drilling to specialists (and assistance from another Barnes Plumbing associate on the last day in order to complete on time). The system was up and running in 5 weekdays, though he finished up a couple minor items the following week on the day of the final inspection. Mike went out of his way to set up temporary plumbing to keep our gas fireplace and old water heater running during the whole install week, so there was no need to temporarily move out (it was end of October). I am very pleased with the final result. I would go with Barnes Plumbing again without hesitation.
Description of Work: My house had an ancient gravity boiler in the middle of the basement, sitting next to a 40 gallon conventional water heater, both vented atmospherically through the chimney flue. There were 3" diameter boiler heat lines hanging down from the basement ceiling and running to risers to the 1st and 2nd floor. After I removed the original boiler and horizontal heat lines, Barnes Plumbing installed a new 95% efficient Burnham Alpine modulating/condensing hot water boiler paired with a 41 gallon Amtrol indirect water heater on cement slabs in a new location in the corner of the basement, where it is closer to kitchen, laundry, and bathroom hot water needs, and leaves more space for eventual basement finishing. Used direct venting after drilling cores through the outside stucco and basement foundation for the vent pipes. Ran new copper + pex heat lines up in the ceiling joists to the risers, separated to have 1st floor and 2nd floor zones. Replaced the original black pipe throughout the basement by running new 1/2" copper pipe from the meter (upgraded to 2psi by Centerpoint) and then stepped it down to low pressure via regulators in 2 locations in the basement. Connected new copper gas lines to dryer and kitchen oven. Replaced 1st floor thermostat and added a 2nd floor thermostat for separating 1st/2nd floor zoning after I ran the thermostat wire from the basement to the 2nd floor. Added an external temperature sensor on the north side of the house for the "outdoor reset" feature of the boiler. Capped off original chimney flue vent.

We talked to 2 companies, and Barnes provided the best information that we could use to make a decision about the type of water heater we needed. The delivery date was promptly scheduled, although there was no wholesaler inventory of the water heater selected, so a rescheduling was required. The day of installation, Zack was on time, professional, personable...everything one might want. He helpfully responded to many questions about the water heater and about an old boiler. We would definitely use Barnes and Zack again.
