Barnes Plumbing Co

Plumbing, Water Heaters, Drain Cleaning,

About us

Barnes Plumbing Co Inc. started in 1982 when Jeff and Bill Barnes decided they wanted to open their own shop. A flip of a coin decided who was going to be the President and Vice-President. Starting off in the basement of an apartment building near Franklin Ave. in Minneapolis, they soon outgrew the space and have since been operating in their own building near Dowling Ave and I-94. In August of 2010, Bill and Jeff Barnes made the hard decision to retire. The company was purchased by Michael Pemberton a long time employee of 10 years. Michael believes in the same principles that Bill and Jeff had with their company of being fair, honest and giving quality service. Barnes Plumbing relies mostly on word-of-mouth referrals. They have been successful in this way because of the way they choose to run their business. Fair, Honest, Quality Service. For over three decades, Barnes Plumbing has stood by quality work, fair pricing and superior service to satisfy the plumbing and heating needs of customers.

This was *NOT* a simple plumbing job! Both of these situations required someone who could isolate the problems, think creatively, and then identify a potential solution. Brian was SUPER at all of this. (Another contractor had tried a simple solution and then when that did not work he suggested that we replace the entire shower for a couple thousand dollars.) Brian tried a couple different things until he found solutions that worked, and actually took the job on with enthusiasm. He also had a pleasant personality and really seemed to enjoy the challenge. Would definitely hire again, and would also highly recommend for those tougher-than-the-usual jobs.
Description of Work: Repaired our shower drain, which had shifted underground and was no longer aligned with the shower, resulting in the drainage water leaking into our basement. Also repaired our rocky toilet (the drain pipe was too high out of the floor and the inner ring was broken).

Zach came out to check what I thought was a leak in our bathroom that was dripping into our basement. When Zach checked out the leak, he diagnosed that it was actually coming from a refrigerator water line in the next room over. It was a simple fix instead of the painful work I thought was going to have to be done. Even though I had misdiagnosed the problem and it ended up being a 2 min fix, Zach was very gracious with the final bill. Zach was a great guy - couteous, neat, and professional. The fact that he was honest and straightforward with me meant a lot and demonstrates that Barnes Plumbing is a company you can trust to give you a straight deal. I'll be calling Barnes for my next plumbing job. Thanks Zach.

I left an e-mail on their website Friday evening and received an e-mail response and a phone call on Monday morning. The caller was courteous and knowledgeable and said that she could give me a general estimate of the cost to replace my water heater, but that the cost could vary depending on the difficulty of the installation. She scheduled the work to be done on Thursday. At exactly the appointed time, the workman arrived to disconnect and drain the water heater and to order a new water heater that would fit in the space. A truck arrived soon to pick up the old water heater and deliver the new one, which the workman installed quickly and efficiently. Both gentlemen were very careful in their work not to make a mess and left the area very clean and neat. I am quite satisfied with the total process, and the final bill came in at slightly less than the original ballpark estimate. They also left the paperwork I needed to fill out to receive an energy rebate. I will definitely be calling Barnes if I need plumbing work in the future.

We called Barnes Plumbing because two of our radiators were not heating properly. Mike came out and turned one of our radiator valves fully open and explained how to check the others in the house. He did not charge us and he took time to explain how our heating system works. We would definitely hire Barnes Plumbing for all future heating and plumbing needs.

The plumber did an excellent job, and took a half-hour less than the original estimate, saving me $65.00 (they charged $130/hour plus a $20 truck charge). He left a very clean space after the work was done. I was very pleased.

Barnes did a fantastic job - they didn't try to upsell me, they gave me an Angie's List dicount, and they were unbelievably honest and straightforward. Makes Barnes your first plumbing call!
Description of Work: They came to my house with one day's notice and replaced a section of plumbing pipe that was leaking. Whereas the previous plumbing company had only put on a clamp - a temporary fix - and then told me I needed all my plumbing in my 1915 house replaced, Barnes did just what was needed to fix the problem. They also took plains to cut cut as much of the wall as was needed.

The morning after we returned from vacation we flushed the upstairs toilet only to have water POUR through the dining room ceiling below. I called Barnes even as the water continued to drip. This was a Friday morning and they were already booked for the day. Luckily, we have another toilet, so we scheduled for Monday. Christ was out early in the morning and quickly determined that it was probably a loose seal. He removed and reset the toilet. When checking the work he determined that there was a partial blockage so he cleared that. There was already a hole in the dining room ceiling below so he pulled down some of the wet drywall so we could get a good look at the pipes and he determined that there was no other leak. He was done and had the bathroom cleaned up in a little over an hour. I was relieved it wasn't a worse problem!
Description of Work: Reseated toilet. Cleared a partial blockage in the drain. Determined that there was not another leak in the water or sewer line that was causing the water to leak through the dining room ceiling.

When I tried to turn the outside water back on (after having turned it off last autumn), the interior valve sprung a leak. I had Barnes plumbing come out and diagnose the problem, which they did very accurately - a faulty, obsolete valve, which needed replacement, along with a section of the pipe. As we looked at the problem it emerged that my townhouse unit has the master control for water for my entire row - which meant that I needed to reschedule the actual repair for later in the week. The technician took this unforeseen complication in stride, and indicated that I would be charged for only one visit, which was a very nice courtesy. He came out later in the week and had the problem fixed within about 45 minutes, including replacing the faulty valve and one other valve that was on its last legs. With my Angie's list coupon it came to under $200, including parts and labor, and no extra charge for the two visits. Now, two months later, everything is working just fine.

On the morning of 6/17/2010 my water heater stopped running. The same morning, I called Barnes Plumbing and they said they would be able to send someone to my house around noon. The repairman, Chris, arrived promptly at noon and started his inspection of our water heater. He determined that power source that the water heater was hooked up to (i.e. the breaker) was dead. He then attached a auxiliary power cable to test it via a different outlet and after he plugged it in it started working again. He explained that I would have to call an electrician to replace the breaker, but informed me that I could use the power cable as a temporary fix. Although the problem turned out to be electrical instead of plumbing, Chris was very nice and helpful in regards to getting my water heater back up and running, even if it was only temporary.
Description of Work: The water heater in the house was not working and pilot light was out. The repairman, Chris, checked it out and determined that the breaker the water heater was connected to was dead. He attached an extra power cord which we ran off of a different outlet so it would work temporary until we replaced the breaker.

This is my first major plumbing issue in my new home so please take that into consideration. Barnes came over right away to give an estimate. I compared with others and his quote was competitive. NOw the strange part: hackers got into my email account and sent out bogus messages asking everyone I had ever sent a message to for money. Because I went back and forth with the office manager at Barnes, they too received this message. They thought it was real. The day before the scheduled work date, around 9:00 AM, they called to confirm the appointment and added that they received the email about my needing money and hoped I was ok. I called them immediately after their call (screening so didn't pick up), and explained about the hackers and assured them I was ok and that the message was a scam. I told them I was ready for them to come over and work. I got a call at 4:00 +/- that afternoon from the owner saying they gave my appt away because they thought the scam email was real and they didn't hear back until "just now". So I had to wait another week for them to come over. Huge bummer. 1) Who believes the email scams anymore, for crying out loud! 2) No one checked for messages ALL DAY? A worker from the company come on the new date. Really nice guy. He wasn't sure what to do and was asking me about the plumbing issue. I asked him if he didn't talk to his boss about it--the guy who did the estimate--he said he had notes, but wanted to make sure. I thought that was strange, but like I said, this is my first experience with plumbers. Maybe that is standard. At any rate we agreed what had to be done and I left for work. He did a great job. But I haven't heard anything back from them. The worker did not call to let me know he had finished, I have not heard from the office manager or the owner to see if everything went ok, I checked my credit card account online to check for activity and nothing has been charged. If this is standard for plumbers, then I guess that is the way it is, but I find it a bit disconcerting. In the future I will check Angie's to try another plumber just because of Barnes' lack of a follow-up call and bc they rescheduled without talking to me first. i would use them again in a pinch bc the work was good.
Description of Work: I am not sure how much I spent because I have not heard from the company since the work was done. They estimated $1500.00 for replacing old iron pipes with pex (?) pipes to increase water pressure in bathroom and kitchen.

I discovered a pinhole leak in the basement at a joint in the main water pipe leading from the water meter to the rest of the house. Called Barnes at 3:30 p.m. and left message. They called back within an hour, explained they were on a job right now that would take a while and I could be first job in the morning. That was fine with me since I could turn off the water at the main. They arrived first thing in the morning as promised. Fixed the leak by cutting out defective area and re-soldering a new piece. Since he was there I had him replace an old refrigerator ice maker saddle valve with a regular valve. All work completed within one hour. Excellent quick service; friendly and efficient . This is the second time I've used Barnes and I would definitely call them in the future.
Description of Work: Fixed a pinhole water leak in the basement at a joint in the main water pipe leading from the water meter to the rest of the house. Since already at the house, I inquired about and decided to have them replace an old refrigerator ice maker water supply valve with a more modern sturdier kind.

Called, received the hourly rate and made an appointment. Received a phone call a few hours earlier than scheduled and asked if he could come early. Arrived a short time later and went over what I wanted and gave me some general estimates for future projects. He was extremely helpful and professional. Completed work in a timely fashion and did an excellent job. It was more expensive than I expected, but that is because I didn't ask how much supplies would be; i.e. copper pipe is expensive. The hourly rate was as expected and the time it took was as estimated. In short, I was more than satisfied with the work done!

Barnes Plumbing was able to schedule the project in a very timely manner. It required busting concrete around the drain and the assigned mechanic, Mike, did so without creating a hold larger than necessary. I hired to separate mason to cement the hole. I would hire them again.

I had a water heater replaced by a different company recently and they noticed some leaking in some exposed pipes in the utility room and suggested having it checked by a plumber. Chris was prompt and very professional while checking our pipes, which had been winterized and not used in some time. He easily determined that the sprayer attached to the kitchen faucet was leaking and that replacing the faucet would fix the issue. I asked that he check a toilet that was running while he was there. He determined that the flapper valve was warped from being dry and replaced it for me. I chose to replace the faucet myself but Chris was quick to offer help if necessary.

I contacted Barnes plumbing via email on Sunday and received a call back the next day (the other plumber I contacted off of Angie's List never responded to my email). I received detailed information over the phone on the approximate costs and set up an appointment that week. The plumber (Zack?) arrived promptly and did a great job. He explained what he did and left everything prepped for installation of a dishwasher, once the dishwasher was delivered. I would definitely use them again (we did get a bid - emailed back to us the same day - for completing a roughed-in basement bathroom which was reasonable) and I have already recommended them to a friend looking for a plumber.
