Barnes Plumbing Co

Plumbing, Water Heaters, Drain Cleaning,

About us

Barnes Plumbing Co Inc. started in 1982 when Jeff and Bill Barnes decided they wanted to open their own shop. A flip of a coin decided who was going to be the President and Vice-President. Starting off in the basement of an apartment building near Franklin Ave. in Minneapolis, they soon outgrew the space and have since been operating in their own building near Dowling Ave and I-94. In August of 2010, Bill and Jeff Barnes made the hard decision to retire. The company was purchased by Michael Pemberton a long time employee of 10 years. Michael believes in the same principles that Bill and Jeff had with their company of being fair, honest and giving quality service. Barnes Plumbing relies mostly on word-of-mouth referrals. They have been successful in this way because of the way they choose to run their business. Fair, Honest, Quality Service. For over three decades, Barnes Plumbing has stood by quality work, fair pricing and superior service to satisfy the plumbing and heating needs of customers.

We had been having trouble with three out of four toilets backing up. Mike advised that we need new toilets and gave us a recommendation. In addition, he repaired a dripping kitchen sink, dripping laundry room sink and a supply line for the basement toilet. We ordered three toilets and when they arrived, called Barnes and scheduled a date for installation. Chris did the installations. The new toilets work great, and I was surprised how much better the new ones work compared to the vintage 1980's models that were replaced. I felt the service and responsiveness of Barnes were great. They are the company we will call in the future.

The gas line involved opening up a wall, and they went out of their way to protect everything in the room from the dust -- taping plastic over bookshelves and really going above and beyond to protect the house. I also appreciated that the plumber always put booties on before coming into the house. In all, I was thrilled with the service, I am thinking I have been under-billed, and I have already recommended them to friends. A+ in my book.
Description of Work: Barnes plumbing was terrific! They installed some shower heads, ran a gas line to my kitchen and installed a gas stove. It involved three trips.

Used this company before and definitely would use again. We were having a drain tile system installed and needed Barnes to come at a specific time. They arrived on time and Chris worked very efficiently to get things done quickly. Very happy with their work.

I called and asked if there was any possibility of a next-day appointment late afternoon, as on short notice, I was able to be home after 3:30 the next day. They were able to schedule me for that...that alone was excellent! Receptionist said Chris would be the plumber, and asked if it would be ok if he were to run late and be later than 3:30. That was fine with me. Chris arrived 4:45, calling ahead to make sure it was still ok to come over. He was willing to fix the sink drain for us too while he was there. All 3 problems fixed in an hour. Very efficient and personable! We have some large plumbing issues to tackle in the future, and will definitely hire this company again. These were small jobs, but a great way to establish with a plumber and determine that it is a good company to work with! We needed to find a new plumber and I believe we have!
Description of Work: Had a toilet that was constantly running, the tank awkwardly sits under part of the countertop that extends over from the sink. Not a simple job! Also a kitchen faucet that was dripping and leaking. We were losing quite a bit of water on both. Meanwhile the evening before, the bathroom sink drain plug broke, so that was an extra added-on problem after I had already scheduled.

We were very happy with the service we received and the amount charged. Very happy also to have them able to come out the same day. The plumber, Zach, was very efficient and accomodating--my preschooler was fascinated with seeing the toilet taken off and Zach was just fine having her stay and watch. We were told that since we had such constant issues with the toilet getting clogged they could come out again with a camera to see what was causing the problem. If they did, they would only charge for their time--there would be no additional charge for the camera like apparently some companies do. And in fact, we did end up up having them come out today for a follow-up visit with the camera. Zach found an obstruction in the sewer (somehow a rodent or something had gotten in there and was clogging everything up!) and a mechanical problem with the sewer connection,so he gave us a game plan for how they can take care of this for us. I was amazed to hear that there would be no charge for his visit today and this visit would just be considered an estimate since more work will be needed to clear this unusual obstruction.
Description of Work: We called Barnes Plumbing last month to help us with a clogged toilet. They said they might even be able to get me in the same day I called--they were pretty booked but would see what they could do. They came out that same day and took care of everything.

great! They were prompt, called when they were on their way to my house, very professional while doing the work. Zach, who was the plumber, was very curteous, communicated all the issues he found with the toilet and shower, was very personable, and let me know all costs up front. Very Impressed. I put their contact info in my phone, because I will use them next time need a plumber.

On time, called first. Started work right away and worked steadily to finish--took less time than estimated. faucents look and work great. Cleaned up after completing work and wore shoe covers to keep outside dirt off carpet. Cost significantly under estimate. Very satisfied with Barnes and Angie's list.

They have always been able to fix the problem. They were here on time. They call me when they're on their way over. When they're here, they explain what they're going to do. If there are additional charges or extra work, they let me know before they do it. They are very friendly and honest. They go in there and get the job done. I've been really pleased with them. The clean-up is perfect.

did the job, honestly, and professionally.
Description of Work: the ouside faucet had borken off, and the shut off valve was worthless. It was middle of winter and so he suggested that he just cap it for now and come back in the spring and repair it, It took him all of 10 minutes to take care of the problem. He was right on time honest, respectful, and very professional. He didn't charge me. Said he would wait til they came out to completely repair it in the spring. I will deffinately have them complete the work. All the positive reviews were right on the mark.

They're minimum charge is for an hour and the Barnes plumber hustled to get all three done within the 60 minutes. While out getting some supplies he also called me from his mobile to warn me that a cop was looking at my car which was parked a bit too close too the intersection and he saved me a parking ticket.

I chose Barnes Plumbing from Angies List for its good reviews. I called them up and told them that I needed my water heater moved. They gave me an approximate quote, which was reasonable. I then made an appointment. Brian the mechanic arrived on time. He moved my water heater as well as the water and gas lines. He was professional and courteous and he completed the work exactly the way I wanted. I was very impressed. I would definitely use Barnes Plumbing again for future work.

We had excel energy come out because of a gas smell and they found a gas leak at the back of our dryer. We called Barnes plumbing on a Monday morning and they were able to come out the same afternoon and give a quote over the phone. The quote was around $160, but to be fair, the plumber did not discover we needed to replace the shut off valve until he was here. The plumber was professional, asked my opinion about whether I wanted a few things, and was very neat. There were no left over pieces in our basement, as I've often found happens with contractors. I would definitely hire them again.

Very well! The guy who came (I've totally forgot his name) was pleasant, professional, and prompt. He tried to help us over the phone, because coming out on a Sunday meant we would have to pay time and a half. When it became clear that we needed him to come out, he arrived quickly. He was very courteous, got right to work, fixed the problem (a previous repair person and mis-installed a pump in the boiler), and was gone in under 30 minutes. It was very expensive, due to the timing of the problem, but I have no complaints.

I called in the morning and they were able to help me out right away, while I would have had more than a day's wait with other plumbers. The plumber arrived just when they said, and he not only fixed the clog, but was extremely helpful getting the buckets emptied, keeping the water contained, and giving me advice on how to prevent it (without making me feel dumb). He also fixed my toilet, and I learned some things about how the insides work that will help me out in the future. I was impressed by how quickly and easily it all went, and his friendliness. I also got a very quick call back about setting up a time to get an estimate on a larger remodel. Overall, I was impressed and will definitely use them again.

Chris was fantastic. He was easy to reach, worked quickly and efficiently, and always told me what things were going to cost before be performed the work. He was also helpful with new ideas about how to place things like the toilet and the sink given the constraints of the house. I cannot recommend him enough.
Description of Work: Chris from Barnes Pluming worked on my foreclosure rehab from September of 2009 through December 2009. He removed a bathtub and shower from a first floor bathroom and installed a large sing with vanity and new toilet. In the upstairs bathroom he removed a cast iron tub with claw feet and installed a new tub and relocated the toilet and sink to other positions in the bathroom. He replaced and installed an new kitchen sink and installed a dishwasher where there had not been one before. He also installed a new gas line with cut off on the gas stove. He installed a washer and dryer. He also fixed the drain in the basement and installed a backflow preventer on the outside of the house.

The work went very well. I had a very, very old toilet which recently began to rock from side to side and front to back. I wanted to have the rocking eliminated and the toilet reset. The problem was that the toilet flange was originally set too high above the floor requiring the old toilet to be cemented in place. After many decades of use the cement failed and the toilet began a rockin'. I bought a new toilet and called Barnes to request the toilet flange be lowered and the new toilet installed. The tech, Brian, removed the old toilet and attempted to lower the flange. Unfortunately after much work, the flange broke along a hairline fracture. Brian removed the remaining flange, installed a new one, and anchored it to the floor. He set the new toilet in place and I am very pleased. The cost was very reasonable and the work was completed quickly and professionally. I recommend Barnes Plumbing to anyone.

After being somewhat unsatisfied with the competitiveness of pricing from other plumbing companies and their "one size fits all" pricing structures we decided to try someone new. Barnes gave us an initial estimate over the phone and kept to that estimate after completing the work. Their availability was great (completed the work the same day!) and they showed up at the time they were supposed to. Most noteworthy for me is that their T&M price structure charges you only for the hours worked and material purchased, instead of hefty service call fees and price categories that pigeonhole you into a pricing tier that doesn't reflect the actual scope of work performed. Wanted to use them for our annual sewer line maintenance cleaning but they don't do that type of work. However we would definitely use again for regular plumbing service.

The woman who answered the phone when I called was quite nice and knew exactly what I was talking about when I told her the problem, which was water leaking into the basement under the toilet. Brian came out the next morning, right on time. He replaced the leaky angle stop, reset the toilet and also replaced the pop-up drain assembly in the bathroom sink. The work was done very quickly (little over an hour) even though it was difficult to remove the crusty and rusty old drain assembly. Brian was very hardworking, knowledgeable and friendly and I would definitely ask for him the next time I call for plumbing work. Also, the cost was much less than I expected!
