+ -1 moreAura refinished our living room, dining room and hallway which I believe was about 388 sq feet. 1 ½ inch red oak with 3 coats of water based finish. $903.00 We chose Aura in part because they had good reviews and part because they were a local company and Gary seemed like he would do a great job. He returned our call within a day and we set up an appointment within a few days. He also agreed to move the piano back after the floors were done which clinched the deal. (It saved us a big worry.) He also agreed to begin first thing in the morning every day so the floors would be dry by evening, which gave us access to the bathroom. Gary was very accommodating to our situation and that impressed us. The floors look beautiful! They are light and really brighten up the living and dining rooms. Before they came out our hardwood floors were horrible. They had no finish and there were a lot of black spots that I didn’t think would come out as well as gaps along several walls. Gary Poole at Aura was able to get rid of the spots with sanding and put base shoes along the walls to cover the gaps. We chose a water base finish of which he applied 3 coats.

He refinished my dining room first and it went so well, I decided to have him do my back bedroom and hallway as well. He was very professional and the floors were finished in just 2 days each.

+ -1 moreWorking with Gary was great. He's a regular guy that takes pride in his work. I was pleased that he didn't have an attitude like the other companies I spoke to. He didn't even flinch when I asked if we could buy the flooring from him and install ourselves. He was very helpful throughout the process. Additionally, Gary did a great job on the sanding and finishing the floors. We still have one coat left, so we agreed to withhold a reasonable portion of the payment until the project is complete. I have already recommended Gary to friends and I intend to do so in the future. When you find someone like this, you don't forget them, you write their name down and tell your friends.
Description of Work: The price listed includes the material and finish work outlined below. My wife and I wanted to purchase and install about 1500 square feet of oak flooring ourselves. I called two companies, based off of reviews on Angie's List. Gary was by far the nicest and most accommodating. His price was very competitive and he was able to have the flooring delivered in less than a week. We purchased 3.25" wide 3/4" solid unfinished oak. Gary came by the house the day of the delivery to test the moisture levels of our sub floors and offer some installation advice. I came up with some questions as we progressed through the installation and Gary was always willing to help me out, over the phone and via email. As we got toward the end of the installation, we decided that we would ask Gary for a quote for sanding and finishing the floors. He made another visit to the house and took some measurements and provided us with what we thought was a fair quote. He also let us return some leftover bundles of flooring for credit towards the finish job. Gary and his assistant took a few days to sand and apply two coats of oil based finish with the agreement that they would come back at a later time and apply the third coat after we finished the rest of the renovation.

I love the floors and Gary came up with many creative and thoughtful solutions to potential problems. Gary is very personable and honest to work with. The work went very quickly and has always ended before the weekend!

+ -1 moreThe overall experience was very positive. We gave them a key and they let themselves in. The whole work was done in about a week. They kept us informed of their progress. They floors were done very nicely and we were happy with them. We had to call them back to caulk in an area at the bottom of the stairs. They were responsive to this issue. They were the least expensive.
Description of Work: They took up the carpet in the living and dining room areas and two flights of stairs. They then replaced them with hardwood floors.

+ -1 moreI was just calling to get an estimate and I had another recommended finisher that I ended up using because he had an unexpected opening a few days later. I would definitely call Gary in the future though.
Description of Work: I called and spoke with Gary about refinishing our fir steps. He was very helpful, knowledgeable and could have scheduled us in a few weeks. I thought his price was more than fair. His estimate was for $300.00.

+ -1 moreGary was very responsive in returning my call for an estimate. He came for the estimate when it was convenient for me (in the evening), and was very polite and professional. We decided on Aura because of the feeling we got from Gary, and because he was one of the two lowest bids out of the 6 we got. I scheduled the work about 3 weeks out, as was convenient for me. About 2 weeks before the work was scheduled, I called Gary and asked if they could also refinish the front porch; he said it wouldn't be a problem. The actual work proceeded as planned; they showed up right on time, and finished in the two days he had predicted, including the front porch (which they found out at the last minute they had to replace some boards on, too). The floors and stairs look terrific! There was one very minor spot on the stairs that they missed with the scraper the first time around, but Gary came back the next day and fixed it with no complaints. I would definitely recommend Aura! The price was right, and the service and quality was excellent.
Description of Work: Gary and his team refinished the hardwood floors in our upstairs (approx. 450 sq. ft.), the treads on our stairs, and our front porch. They also replaced some bad boards, and filled in two areas in closets where previous owners had "borrowed" boards to replace damaged boards in other parts of the house.

+ 0 moreWhen Gary gave me his estimate, I was surprised because it was on the low end of my other estimates and he had good ratings here on Angie s List. Because of my schedule we set a date a month later. I called twice to add two small boards that needed replacing and a small trim piece. He said no problem. Later I requested that he buff and recoat an area done a year ago (222sqft). Gary and Matt showed up right on time. Matt removed the two bad boards and I can t tell for sure which ones he replaced, no one else can tell the difference either. Where he blended the old clear coat and the new, you can t tell the difference. They did a good job of taping off the area and hanging up plastic. The dust was kept to a minimum. My only complaint was as much my fault as his, in not discussing the price for buffing and recoating the 222sq. ft. All in all I m very happy with the job and will recommend him to both friends and my fellow Angie's List members.
Description of Work: Sand and seal 344 sq. ft. of oak flooring $860. Buff and seal 222sq. ft. $222.

+ -1 moreGary returned my call promptly and came out to my house for the estimate when promised. I later called to add a hall leading to the bedrooms to see how much more that would cost. He gave me the cost over the phone and when the job was finished was right on. He and his crew came right on time in the morning and stayed all day everyday. Most people I've hired before have to leave my job at 1-2 pm to go to some other job. Gary didn't do that he worked until 5:30 6:00 everyday which made him stay on track and finished in the time he gave me. On the last day when the last coat of varnish was put on he was there until 10:00 PM. I love my new floors and would definitely hire Gary again.
Description of Work: Gary removed the linoleum from the back entry and kitchen, removed the carpeting from the dining room, living room and hall and removed the ceramic tile from the front foyer. He replaced all with hardwood flooring. He put plastic on the doorways leading to other parts of the house so the dust would be kept to a minimum.

+ -1 moreMost of my home already had hardwood, but it was poorly finished, and I wanted to get rid of the areas that were still carpeted, apparently because the prior owners had ruined the wood underneath. Gary gave me an estimate, and helped me understand my options. I decided to have a new floor installed in the living room, and to tear out the carpet in the upstairs bedrooms and refinish what was under it. Gary's crew showed up right on time the first day, and after that I gave them a key so I could go to work each day without waiting to let them in. They did a beautiful job on the new living room floor, and it matches very well with the dining room. Upstairs, one of the bedroom floors turned out to be so damaged under the carpet that I had them install a new floor there too. In the other bedroom, they patched the damaged areas with new wood, and then refinished. They hung plastic to keep dust from getting everywhere, and cleaned up after themselves. And the floor looks great.
Description of Work: Aura installed and finished new hardwood flooring in my living room and master bedroom, and refinished the existing hardwood in my dining room, kitchen, and another bedroom.

+ 0 moreLittle bumpy at first because of some miscommunication. They had forgotten that we needed stair nose and therefore couldn't start the job that day, but Gary quickly remedied the situation. He came out the next day and had the hardwood installed and one coat of poly put on by the afternoon. He came back the next day to apply the other two coats. Overall, they did an absolutely beautiful job and we will hire him again to sand and refinish our hardwood on the main level.
Description of Work: Installed 2 1/4" red Oak in the upstairs hallway (33 square feet), sanded and put on 3 coats of polyurethane.

+ -1 moreI contacted 7 of the highest rated contractors and collected quotes. Quotes varied from $3800 to $10000 and waiting times from 1 to 6 weeks. I was impressed by Gary's no-nonsense approach, expertise and reasonable prices. You are dealing with the installer himself (he does not have another crew) and he does not inflate the add-on charges (we had another quote with a line-item for tape and plastic, and then some). Job was started and completed on time which was nice because we had scheduled to leave the house. When we had questions about the finished work he was quick to respond and address our concerns.
Description of Work: Sand 150 sq. ft. redwood, remove vinyl, carpet and trim boards, install 400 sq. ft. new matching redwood (select or better)and 6 vent covers, oil stain and double coat with the best water-based commercial material (Traffic), remove debris and reinstall trim boards.

+ -1 moreGary was very personable and responsive. I was looking for the most earth-friendly options that would give good results and he was willing to work with me on that. His estimate was the most reasonable. He was booked several weeks out, but we were able to schedule the work. He was here for the work himself to ensure quality. They did a great job sanding and minimizing dust. Although there are a couple spots in the repair areas that aren't perfect, the overall work was well done. He accommodated working around one large piece of furniture and made extra trips to finish. He replaced the "bull nose" at the top of stairs at a good price, and he took care of two threshold areas that I had forgotten about and asked him to take care of later. Gary also recommended someone to put in new oak stair treads and then Gary put coatings on those new treads. Their work was worth the wait!

Description of Work: Gary and his assistant resanded my small front porch floor. They tore up the boards that were there to accommodate the old linoleum, sanded and refinished the wood floor beneath. The wood had been patched previously because of a remodeling before I owned the home. They stopped twice to make sure that I was going to be ok with it. They put down a sealer and two coats of acrylic satin finish. This was a small job, and other contractors I spoke with were quoting minimum pricing that was higher than the actual work.

+ 0 moreIt was easy to work with Gary. He answered questions and had an efficient technique to get the job done in the time specified. Part of my floor needed extra sanding to remove an old finish, and it all looks great now! Some stains could not be removed, but are under large furniture items. I'd have liked to get more help from Gary in knowing how I could help to make the job a success - such as not running the house fan between coats. Unfortunately it was cold and rainy during the week the work was done. Friends had warned me to put bags around my electronic equipment to seal out the fine dust that always spreads all over the house (with a forced air furnace). Also we had a mix up by not communicating about whether the house would be left open one day. However the job overall was a great experience and I love my wood floors!
Description of Work: I had about 350 square feet of oak flooring sanded and refinished. The carpet removal I did myself, and bought base shoe and stained it myself at Gary's suggestion. He did the installation of the base shoe. The flooring is in a natural finish, with one coat of oil and two coats of water based polyurethane.

+ -1 moreGary was perfect for this job. I had a small kitchen with linoleum flooring already installed on top of the existing hardwood flooring. When I pulled off the linoleum, the hardwood floor was covered with a film of adhesive. After Gary had sanded the floor and applied a coat of stain, I asked that he stop the job so I could repair a slightly damaged section that had been exposed after the sanding. Gary was nice enough to schedule another time to re-sand the replaced section and complete the staining (at no additional charge) after I had completed the work. I seriously doubt that other companies would have been this flexible in this situation. The final result was awesome. Gary is friendly, takes pride in his work, and is very knowlegable about hardwood floors. I highly recommend them.
