Description of Work: Floor drain cleaning. I purchased a drain cleaning & inspection from Angie's List because I had a floor drain that was plugged. That was all, no other problems or concerns. I scheduled an appointment in mid-March 2014, but we had to reschedule due to a snow storm. The rescheduled date was March 27th. The technician was 1/2 hour late on the rescheduled date/time. When he arrived, I told him that I was pressed for time, that I had to get to work. I showed him where the plugged drain was, and I told him that if he could just clear that out, we'll call it good. It didn't take him long to clear the drain. He was under the impression, as was I, that "Drain Inspection" meant a main-line video. I told him that I didn't have much time, but he said that it only takes ten minutes or so. I said okay, if he can be done in 10 minutes. The video inspection found what he described as a "collapsed line", 90 feet out from the stack, the cost for repair for which would be several thousand dollars. Late for work, I let the technician finish up and see himself out. The bill he left me showed paid in full, nothing owed. | |The next day, Mike the owner called me and asked why the video inspection was done, that the "inspection" on the coupon did NOT include a MAIN LINE video inspection, and that the video inspection was normally a $250 service. (What then was it supposed to be for? $250 for a 10 minute inspection? Oh PLEASE!!) The answer I gave was that the technician offered to do it. I could tell from the conversation that he wanted to bill me for the video, but he stopped short of doing so. I also explained to Mike what was found: that about 1/3 of the line was blocked, and that the blockage was 90' out from the stack, and the technician said that the line was collapsed. 90 feet out put it right in the middle of the street, exactly where it would meet with the main city sewer line. Mike said that that isn't a collapsed line at all; it was likely just partially slipped away from the main line, and that we could pay to have it fixed, but the cost to dig up the street (including obstruction permits) would be very expensive - $10K easily. He also said that it is a very common problem, part of the aging infrastructure in the city, and that if we're not having any major problems with drainage, then don't worry about it. | |Two completely different opinions, from the same service provider. I called Angie's List about the coupon. They agreed that the verbiage on the coupon was not clear, and that they would correct that in the future, and that I was not liable for a service that I didn't explicitly request. | |Would I use them again? I don't know, really. I am going to just monitor the drainage for a year, and see if it gets worse. However, quite frankly I am more hesitant about using Angie's List coupons in the future than I am about using this provider.
