It worked. The dishwahsre now rumbs on the countertop a bit, but that is minor and I will fix it myself. They were very flexible to take the job, even if it was very small. They had the right tools for the job. Only concern was a little harsh language among the worker.
Description of Work: We had hardwood floor raised in fron of our dishwasher which had to be replaced. Originally we wanted them to remove the floor and put it back in after the dishwasher had been replaced. However they recommended shaving off the countertop from underneath to gain the space.

Paul and Nancy showed up on time for the estimate and provided an estimate based on me removing all of the carpet and not refinishing the painted risers of the stairs. I was able to take care of the rooms, but not the stairs -- whoever had laid down the runner had used more glue than carpet (on the risers, too!), and the carpet was so old it shredded if you tried to pull it away. I called Paul, and they agreed to take out the carpet as well. It was much harder than anyone would reasonably expect, and I was happy to pay extra to cover the extra work (they did ask for my decision on the matter). They ended up having to hand-scrape the risers to get the 50-year-old adhesive off of them. Given how horrible the stairs were, I feel undercharged. I expect they would have been done sooner if they hadn't had to spend an extra day on the stair runner. Paul and Nancy refinished the floors and then applied the water-based poly. They agreed to use a satin finish on the red pine stairs and a semigloss finish on the maple floors, and the results are gorgeous. They did the job while I was at my job, and I had no problems with dust or fumes from the finish when I was home. They were on time every morning and very good at keeping in touch with me and letting me know how things were going and when I could walk on the floors.
Description of Work: Refinished the 2nd story hardwood floors and stairs. They ended up having to remove the runner from the stairs as well. No stain. The finish was three coats of Duraseal water-based polyurethane.

There were some snags, but Paul handled them like a true professional. Our floors look great!
Description of Work: Paul and his family practically moved into our home our first week of ownership. We decided to have all the hardwood floors redone before moving in furniture. He even matched the stain at the top of the landing to go with the original dark wood trim along the stairs. He refinished the floors in the dining room, living room, three bedrooms, entryway and upstairs landing. He also did all the closet floors. It was quite extensive.

Paul came promptly to give me an estimate, and explain my options. I decided to have some floors re coated, and some maple floors sanded and completely refinished, using the Glitsa Swedish finish. Paul and his wife did most of the work while we were out of town. We felt quite comfortable leaving them with the garage code to get into our house. The job was done very promptly, and was finished a little ahead of time. They left the house clean and dust-free, so we were able to move right in. Paul also left us a large bag of felt pads to use on our furniture, so that it wouldn't scratch the floors. He advised us to wait at least several weeks before we put any carpets down. We are very happy with the results and would definitely call Paul again (although I think it will be years before these floors need to be treated again). One thing I especially appreciated was Paul's thoughtfulness in keeping us informed. While we were in town, and he was working on the floors, he even called us before he went to lunch to let us know which floors we could walk on and which we should keep off of, in case we stopped by the house while he was out.
Description of Work: I had Paul give me an estimate on refinishing the wood floors in a home we had purchased, and then hired him and his wife to do the work.

Paul and Nancy came out on time for an estimate to refinish our floors. They quoted $2100 to sand and finish our kitchen, dining, living room, hallway and two bedrooms (about 600 square feet). Paul charged me $100 to remove some existing flooring, and $100 for a surprise stain at the bathroom entrance. Paul patched that. $2300 later, we have beautiful floors. Included in that price is the longer lasting finish. We are pleased we upgraded.
Description of Work: Refinished our 90 year old maple floors.

1st Ave Hardwood Floors did a fantastic job from start to finish. I wanted the work done before we moved into our new home and they were able to do the job in four days. They began work within hours of giving me an estimate and the results are truly stunning. They were friendly, professional and a pleasure to do business with. Highly recommended.

1st Avenue was easy to work with and gave an estimate over the phone saving me time. They scheduled the work within 1 week of calling and followed through with the job just like we discussed on the phone. They suggested a newer water based product to cut down on lingering vapors which was helpful.
Description of Work: Sanded and refinished (3 coats) the hardwood flooring in 2 bedrooms (250 square feet) and touched up a 6 square foot area with one coat of polyurethane.

We were extremely happy with the service. I called Paul one day an within two days he and his son were over doing the work. There were easy to work with and they did a good job cleaning up.
Description of Work: They refinished hardwood floors from late-1880's in one of our guest bedrooms and adjoining closet. They matched the flooring where an old radiator used to be located. The flooring was a very rare 1/4" thick and 1-1/2" wide maple. They cut the new wood to match. The total area was about 150 square feet including the closet space.

Though he usually does floors, Paul agreed to install wood baseboards in my living room (I had a tile floor installed last winter). He picked a wood that had colors that complemented the tile and picked a semi-glossy finish. He also figured out a way to build a higher baseboard than is available ''off the shelf'' without having to special order anything. He and his wife installed the baseboard in one day, and over the next two (short) days, they sanded and finished them. It looks just great! In the course of the installation, it appeared that my internet cable was damaged. Though we couldn't figure out exactly how it happened, Paul came over with a coaxial cable and got me back on the internet!
Description of Work: They installed a custom baseboard in my living room.

Paul came and bid the job before I had closed on the house. His bid was lower than I had expected to have to pay (based on what it cost a relative to have their floor refinished), so I went with him. He was willing to come in and sand my floors over the weekend to accommodate some other work I was having done on the house. He was friendly and professional in all our interactions and my floor looks great!
Description of Work: Sanded and finished the hardwood floors in my living room, dining room, and two bedrooms.

No problems. Paul was nice to work with and the floor turned out great. He was able to match the original 1, and 1/4 inch maple.
Description of Work: Paul installed and finished a maple floor in an upstairs bedroom. We had pushed out one of the bedroom walls and needed a floor to match the original maple floor in the rest of the bedroom. The floor Paul installed blends in with the original floor very nicely, you can barely tell the difference.

The work was professionally done and both Paul and his wife were always on time, friendly, and good about answering questions and keeping me updated. Floors look like new!

They were prompt and courteous, explained what they're doing, and why they're doing it. They made changes to the contract based on my changed desires. I'd definitely hire them again.
Description of Work: They buffed three rooms and a hallway and completely refinished another room. The fourth room had been covered with carpet and a wall had been removed. It was necessary to repair the floor with new wood in order to remove old pet stains, cover the area where the wall had been removed and match the stain of that floor with the others.

PAUL WAS VERY PLEASANT TO WORK WITH AND WENT BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY TO REPAIR DIFFICULT SECTIONS AND TO SUGGEST CREATIVE SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS IN OUR WOODEN FLOOR. WHEN UNEXPECTED WORK CAME UP PAUL CHEERFULLY TACKLED IT AND WAS MORE THAN REASONABLE IN NEGOTIATING A FAIR PRICE FOR THE EXTRA WORK PERFORMED. WE EXPECT TO HIRE HIM BACK FOR FUTURE WORK ON OTHER SECTIONS OF THE HOUSE.
Description of Work: PAUL REPAIRED MANY HOLES IN THE FLOOR AND REPLACED LARGE SECTIONS OF FLOORING AT THE EDGES IN ADDITION TO REPAIRING A STAIRWAY LANDING AND REPLACING REGISTER COVERS. THE FLOOR WAS THEN SANDED THOROUGHLY AND FINISHED WITH THREE COATS OF A WATER WATER-BASED HIGH-QUALITY LOW VOC FLOOR FINISH.

HE MOVED ALL OF THE FURNITURE IN AND OUT FOR ME. HE EVEN SHOWED ME STAIN SWATCHES AND VIDEO OF HIS OTHER WORK SO I COULD SEE WHAT IT WOULD LOOK LIKE WITH VARIOUS STAINS. HE ALSO INSTALLED AN OAK BOOT AT THE BASE OF THE FLOOR AROUND ALL OF THE ROOMS WHICH ADDED A NICE FINISHING TOUCH. HE EVEN REPLACED BOARDS THAT HAD BEEN DRILLED THROUGH PREVIOUSLY FOR THE TV CABLE, ALL INCLUDED IN THE ORIGINAL PRICE. THEY STARTED AND FINISHED WHEN THEY SAID THEY WOULD WITHIN THE TIME FRAME THEY HAD STATED. IT WAS A VERY GOOD EXPERIENCE AND THE FLOORS LOOK WONDERFUL, THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS. I WAS VERY IMPRESSED, AND THEY DIDN'T BREAK ANYTHING!
