Ohana Home & Design is an award winning residential design build firm serving the Twin Cities metro area. Ryan and Maggie Sewell are the owners of the company and the main point of contact for every client. From the first phone call, to the design phase, to the construction phase, to the completed renovation, we are there with you each step of the way to make every project enjoyable and successful. Ohana’s mission is to personally enhance the homes and lives of our clients while establishing a long term relationship built on trust. Our unique approach to working closely with our clients, our attention to detail, and our high standards of craftsmanship, have created countless dazzling and dynamic renovations.
I contacted Ohana construction for an estimate on remodeling two bathrooms and building a deck. Ryan contacted me the next day and we scheduled a meeting for that same afternoon. Ryan was right on time for the walk through of the proposed projects. He as very knowledgeable and provided some good recommendations in several areas. Ryan contacted me the next week and we met to go over the estimate. The estimate was very complete and detailed. Ryan answered all our questions and was very professional. We ended up going with a different contractor due to pricing, but I believe that had we chosen Ohana, they would have done a first class job. They are a class organization and I would be very comfortable recommending/using them in the future.
Description of Work: Estimate to remodel two bathrooms and build deck
I can't say enough about Ryan and Maggie (husband and wife team owners of Ohana Construction). This was our first remodel and we were nervous given the horror stories about contractors from friends and family. We knew as soon as we met Ryan that we wanted to work with him if his proposal came in as reasonable, which it did. At our first meeting, he was low key, easy to talk to, and honest. He was the only contractor we met who told us that he could not personally remove the asbestos tile which covered the entire remodel area since it was dangerous and he did not have a license to do so, but that he could find someone to do it who was licensed and expert in this field. The other contractors we interviewed either did not know what kind of tiles they were looking at, or just said they could "rip it up". The end result of the remodel was amazing. We could not be happier with our new basement. The entire process was smooth. Ryan and Maggie's communications to us were outstanding. At the beginning of the process, they asked us how we'd like to be communicated to about the project. Although we spoke to Ryan every day to ask or answer a question or two, they sent us detailed project updates via email every week, as well as if they had larger questions requiring more detailed answers. Ryan or one of his contractors was on our doorstep at 8AM every day and went right to work, and by 6PM when we arrived home, they were just packing up. Ryan and his team cleaned up after themselves every day. Ryan and Maggie are extraordinarily conscientious. They would update us constantly and let us know if there were any minor issues that were being fixed. Ryan came back several times to readjust a large medicine cabinet just to our liking. Although he is not an interior designer by any means, he would always give us good personal opinions when asked on wood finishes, door selection, layout, etc. The cost of the project was competitive. You might find some general contractors who will tell you that they can do it all for a slightly lower cost. I can't see how one person can be enough of an expert in all these areas - carpentry, electrical, plumbing, tiling - to do a really good job. We appreciated the fact that Ryan brought in true experts in their field to do the job right. The painter was so thorough he went over his work every night with a flashlight. The night after the remodel was complete we had a minor issue with the plumbing which was corrected immediately the next day. But that night we called Ryan and he was immediately on the phone with the plumber, who called us right away and was in the next day to fix the problem and follow up with us. The electricians were creative and flexible as we brainstormed with them about how and where we would put in new fixtures throughout the basement. As a result of the expert workmanship that Ryan was able to bring in, everything was done well, and it shows. Another thing I'd like to point out is that Ryan was more than fair with us when the inevitable surprises occurred. For example, we had selected very small glass tiles for our entire shower stall. We had no idea how challenging and tricky this type of tile is to install. After Maggie and Ryan, who are very experienced in tiling, discovered that they could not do the job perfectly for us to meet their very high standards, they brought in a senior expert to do that part of the work. I'm sure it cost them a pretty penny to do so, but the cost was not passed on to us. The work was exceptional. I found out later from a friend that she had installed the same tile in her shower and her "professional" was unable to install it straight and it ended up slightly wavy. Another point I'd like to make is that Ryan and Maggie passed along all their trade discounts to us, they did not "mark up" the wholesale costs to make a profit on us. Their philosophy is that if they were not involved in going to the stores to select the tiles, fixtures, and carpeting, they would pass along their discount. At the end of the project, Ryan and Maggie gave us a gift basket and brought in a cleaning service. What a treat, though it should have been us giving them a gift. Ryan and Maggie care deeply about their business and it shows. They are highly conscientious, excellent listeners, flexible, patient, have a good sense of humor that carried us through the very few and minor but inevitable "hiccups" in the project, extremely responsive, and they care about the quality of what they are doing. They are highly professional and we trust them completely. We have since brought Ryan back in this week to provide us with an estimate for some custom cabinets in our dining room. I highly recommend Ohana Construction and would use them for almost any other work.
Description of Work: We completely remodeled our basement, a 1953 post-war ranch. One fraction of the basement had been finished decades ago, leaving 3/4 of it unfinished (cinder block walls, asbestos tiling, ancient cement laundry tub and that's about it). Using plans drawn up for us by an interior designer, Ryan and Maggie proceeded to build us a beautiful bedroom with two huge closets and an egress window, a storage area with a great workbench, a gorgeous bathroom with glass shower doors, and a laundry room with semi-custom maple cabinetry. We also decided to have the staircase descending to the basement mudded and professionally painted, wired and installed a light fixture in that staircase, installed a new high-efficiency furnace and brand new carpeting for the staircase and the entire basement. Maggie and primarily Ryan worked on the installation of sinks/ vanity/ cabinets/ countertops and the framing and drywall. Ryan overall played the role of general contractor and brought in experts to perform many functions - electricians, plumbers, professional asbestos removers, painters, carpenters, carpet installers. Ryan had us interview his electrician and plumber beforehand to make sure they understood our goals and that we felt comfortable with them. Ryan played the role of general contractor and Maggie is the expert tiler of the family and also played the role of administrator and project manager. The project lasted about 3 months.

Ohana has done remodeling work for us in the past -- installing larger windows and a larger sliding door in our kitchen. They also removed a couple of walls in which structural support was involved and did a really good job. Back to the ceramic tile. We used several types of tile in our kitchen -- a couple of which were expensive imports. The other quotes we received for this work were substantially more -- both from a labor standpoint, but also from a materials cost. Several visits were required to complete the work and these were always pleasant and on time. We are presently planning a bathroom remodel and we intend to have the entire project managed by Ohana. They are simply, the best!
Description of Work: I can not say enough good things about this company. Ohana installed the backsplash in our remodeled kitchen. The also helped us select the tile and grout and they saved us over $1,000 on the cost of the tile. The work was done with a perfectionist eye to detail and it turned out beautifully.

We accepted the quote and they are doing the work right now. He was able to tell us exactly what things would cost; there was no fudging with the numbers. When we could not find certain items, he was able to find everything and get us good prices.
Description of Work: Ohana Construction gave me an estimate for a full bathroom remodel. The work includes the tub, the shower and surround, ceramic tile, the toilet, the shower doors, and a new ceiling. We’re painting ourselves.

The estimate process was quick and easy and Ohana's estimate was the lowest of the 3 bids we got for our bathroom remodeling project. Ohana Construction is a smaller company who subcontract out the plumbing and electrical work, but work closely with the subs to ensure quality work is done on time. Ryan and Maggie were responsive to our questions and even helped us pick out some great accent tiles for the shower area. The work started on time and progressed as planned throughout the project. They were very professional in all aspects of the project. We are very happy with the work that was done and felt they were a good value.
Description of Work: Ohana Construction did a complete gut and remodel of our master bathroom which included: demolition of the old bathroom, installation of new drywall, in-floor heat system, ceramic tile floor, vanity, sink, tub, toilet and custom tile work in the tub/shower area.
We have had Ryan to our house for two separate jobs which occured a few years apart. The most recent was a basement remodel in mid 2009. He is very interested in his work and in doing a good job. When we discussed recessed lighting for our basement remodel, he had creative and workable ideas and verfied the technical (lumin) requirements between the time of our discussion and the installation. The result is very nice, with no apparent transitions in the intensity of lighting between individual fixtures. He came up with a switching scheme that included code requirements (of course) but also ended up being convenient and, dare I say, fun! He also did major repair to the ceiling drywall, concluding with a knockdown finish that far exceeded my expectations. Finally, he replaced the steps to the basement. We discussed a number of options and related material and installation costs. We will look no further than Ryan if and when the next job comes along. He is clean, conscientious, considerate, flexible and ethical.
Description of Work: Ryan has perfomed electrical rough and finish including recessed lighting, carpentry, finish woodwork, drywall and taping.

He had originally redone our bathroom. We haven't had the work done yet for the deck. It is still pending and the weather hasn't been cooperative. Ryan is becoming my go to guy after he did the bathroom for anything that we need to have done. We just joke and say that we need to call Ryan. I have handed him off to one of my coworkers that he did a project for. The coworker is threatening to adopt him. I told my coworker that if there is any conflict I get to go first. He is very thorough and methodical. He does extremely meticulous tile work. He works around our schedule. He has pointed things out but he is not real talkative. He has long pauses when you are talking to him while he is thinking about and processing what to do. He is very nice and we are planning to use him again.
Description of Work: I got an estimate from Ohana Construction/Ryan's Repairs & Remodeling to repair our deck and replace some boards.

The work proceeded on time and was finished on budget. The Ohana crew was pleasant, very professional and highly skilled and flexible. Ryan was on site during the critical periods of installation to supervise and assist. I am so impressed with Ohana Construction that I have already discussed two additional projects with Ryan and I anticipate that this work will be done later this spring.
Description of Work: I qualified 4 companies through Angie's List to remove a sliding door, install 3 very large picture windows and substitute a 9' sliding door for an old 6' slider. The work was done on the main floor of a two story house and Ryan made 3 visits to our home prior to quoting the project. Ohana was priced in the middle of the four quoting companies, but the attention to detail that Ryan exhibited in quoting the project in the first place made me believe that Ohana was the right company to do the job.

The bid was good; it was comparable to the other offers that we got except that it was a lot lower than another one so it seemed competitive. He also seemed very professional.
Description of Work: We singed a contract with them and they are going to redo our kitchen for us.
All the work was done in 3 weeks. They came every day, M-F and worked from 8am-4pm. I had a bay window installed in the living room which began to leak when it rained. They came out the very next day to take a look and provide a temporary fix. Then they came back the day after that and repaired the window so that the leaking would no longer be an issue, even if water backed up in my gutter again.
Description of Work: New windows, doors and storm doors, foundation repair, new deck, updated electrical outlets, gas pipe installed in kitchen, new circuit breaker box and bringing certain electrical wires up to code, and new door bell.

Ryan has worked for us in the past, so we were very familiar with his work ethic. He came over, reviewed the work in detail, provided a bid then went to work. The work was completed and completed to our satisfaction. Ryan is great at asking questions to make sure he understands your vision and offer suggestions. Ryan and Maggie together make your design come to life with laying the tile. Our only rough spot was the time line to completion. The project went longer than expected (approximately 3-4 weeks over the proposed completion date), however the finished project was over and above our expectations. The price we paid for the work completed is a great value. One of the best perks is Ryan employs a house keeper to clean after the project is complete. Ryan also cleaned everyday before he left to keep the amount of dust to a minimum.

We contacted Ryan about our need for work in our bathroom. He gave us a free estimate and an accurate time line for the project. Ryan was aware that we only had one bath/shower and was concious of the timing for the project. He actually finished sooner than he predicted. He answers questions and is willing to explain things until we understand. He is also available afterwards if needed. Last year Ryan worked on our Kitchen and we have been very happy with the job in the Kitchen too. Ryan is open to using earth friendly products and educated us about a great toliet that we now have in the bathroom
Description of Work: Our main Bathroom Shower/Bath needed to be re-tiled and updated plumbing installed.
Ryan and his wife were quick to respond to our request for a bid. Ryan had some great ideas that we hadn't even thought of, that make our bathroom unique. After we signed a contract, Ryan was quick to start the job. He was on time, polite, efficient and cleaned up the worksite every evening. Ryan was quick to respond and correct some minor concerns we had. It was an excellent experience from start to finish. We would recommend Ohana Construction to friends and family.
Description of Work: Complete demolition of main bathroom and rebuild. New flooring, walls, ceramic tile and lighting.
Ryan did a great job staying in touch as the job progressed. He had lots of good suggestions and guidance as we struggled to balance quailty, functionality and cost. He was very careful to get our input when decisions had to be made. We were very satisfied with the suppliers he recommended. THe best indicator of how it went is tht we wouldn't hesitate to call Ryan for our next remodeling project.
Description of Work: Remodeled Master Bath. Took room down to studs. Replaced everything except tub. New sheetrock. New glass shower, new window, tiled floor, tiled walls to 4 ft,, tiled shower stall, tiled tub surround. Upgraded and added lighting. New vanity and counter top. All new fixtures.

He was great! We had two guys out to the house and Ryan made a great impression. He is very thoughtful about estimates and how to make the solution work best for us. He made great suggestions on how to use the space. He pays great attention to detail making sure everything was perfect before he finished. I noticed that he even replaced a light switch cover so it matched the other one in the room when he noticed it was ivory and not white. Everything was done with great attention to detail. His work was done ahead of schedule and looks great! He communicated with us regularly on how things were going and every day they cleaned up any mess they had made. He went way above and beyond what we expected from him and from his work! He was even nice to our dog, who is a little shy but got excited when he saw Ryan pull up!
Description of Work: Ryan did a lot of work to help us finish our attic. He ran heat up, put up walls, doors and closets. He also put a light in a couple places and a fan in the bathroom.

Ryan was prompt in coming to our home for an estimate. When I put the project on hold for 8 months and then called him again, he came back out to see if he had to change his estimate. (He didn't.) He was able to start work within a few weeks. He and his partner arrived every morning before 8 am and stayed until 6 pm or so; even worked a Saturday. I had originally planned to paint the bathroom myself (to save money), but it became evident that I would slow down the process, so I asked them to do it. Each day they cleaned up thoroughly. The results are absolutely beautiful. The tile was installed perfectly. The wall, which had held a medicine cabinet, is absolutely smooth; the new half wall is finished off beautifully. Ryan kept me posted on their progress and plans; he made great suggestions and was careful to explain my options. As noted above, I decided to update our main floor half bath with new hardware; he installed this for me. Despite these new additions to the job and painting the bathroom, he still came in under his estimate! I plan to call him again for any larger home project and when we are ready to remodel our basement.
Description of Work: Ryan almost completely re-did our 3/4 bath. The walls were taken down to the studs/insulation and the shower surround was replaced with tile; a pocket door was removed and the wall cut down to a half wall; the tile floor was replaced; the exhaust fan and light was replaced; the medicine cabinet was replaced, the pink toilet was replaced. We re-used the sink and vanity. The doorway to the bathroom had been open to the bedroom; Ryan framed in and installed a door. He also tore out the old tile floor in a second bathroom and replaced the tile and installed a new toilet and pendant lights. On an impulse, I also asked him to install a new faucet, light, and towel/TP holders in our main floor half bath.

They were friendly, approachable, and checked in afterwards to ensure we were satisfied. Ryan is a great guy to work with. He took extra time to try to arrange for redwood, and when that wasn't feasible, he was willing to work with my ideas about patching. They did not give us a final estimate once we decided to use cedar, and the final price was not estimated, just labor, but overall, we feel the work was fairly priced. He waited to send the bill until he knew we were happy with the work.
Description of Work: Ryan came to estimate the work needed to repair our deck. They recommended adding supports to the railing, and replacing some redwood boards that were rotting. When they couldn't find a source for redwood in small quantities, we decided to patch with some boards off the stairs, and replace those with cedar, as well as use cedar for the supports.

Ryan is very easy going and is a true professional. Ryan and his wife Maggie were very good about meeting to consult on the design and really took the time to draw up various proposals based on what I wanted. Initially I was working with the designs of another contractor that fell through. Ryan started building the porch in the fall and when I freaked out at the size of the porch, I had him halt the entire project for two weeks while we went back to the drawing board so that the porch would be more to scale with the house. Ryan was more than flexible even though it meant getting behind schedule. Ryan worked as long as he could into the fall and resumed work in the spring. He pays careful attention to finish work and checks in with you along the way so there are no surprises. It's very clear that he wants to do the project exactly right for the customer and cares about growing his business. This was a big project with some real design challenges that ended up being amazing. See the photos for yourself.
Description of Work: Ryan tore down the lower half of my existing deck and built a screened porch in its place.
