We had a new roof installed by Austad, they did a great job. The crew was very mindful of protecting our landscaping and house during the process and cleaned up well after the job was completed. And yes, the roof looks great. I should note, the class 4 shingles they recommended lowered my home owner's insurance cost by $900 p/year.

In addition to replacing my roof perfectly, the crew also cleaned up exceptionally well and worked 2 12+ hr days to get the job done. Steve was a gem to work with; was always on time, professional, and communicative. Highly recommend Austad!

First Dave took days to respond, then roofing was delivered to the neighbors. Roofing was delayed, and i was notified the first day. The 2nd day i heard nothing from Steve and had to call to find out. I was told the driveway would be covered with tarps and magnets would be used to pick up nails. This wasn't done and i had to pick up 100's of nails myself from driveway and all around the house and neighbors house. Front and back steps weren't covered with tarps while roofing, so one had oil stains, the other brand new composite steps had gouges, tar stains, and a broken light. Corner piece of my siding had a hole put in it. My birdbath was also broken. Roofers left garbage all over the place. A few nails and little pieces of roofing were left on the roof after they were done. The office called before the job was completed to get final papers signed, i had to tell them they aren't done yet. Long delays and poor communication, a roofing job with soffit and fascia took about a month total. Corner siding piece was finally replaced, and a couple hundred dollars was taken off the price for the broken items.

The removed snow from roughly a 30x35 foot area. All they had to do wash push the snow down the roof. There was more standing around talking and laughing than working. I was build for 6 man hours of labor. I get that they needed someone to handle safety lines, but seriously, it takes this kind of time? Never going to use or recommend them again.

Not long after we paid the initial payment, we decided not to proceed with the project (we're going to re-side the whole house using Hardie siding instead). We contacted Austad to tell them not to proceed and asked them to refund our initial payment, less any costs they had already incurred. They didn't respond to that request, so we kept calling. I eventually spoke with Dave Austad on February 10. He seemed to think we wanted all of our money back, so I explained that we know they may have incurred costs and he should subtract those costs from our refund. He said he'd get back to me. He hadn't called by February 16, so I called and left a message asking him to call me. As of today (February 24), still no response.
Description of Work: We originally engaged Austad to replace some damaged wood siding panels on our house. We agreed on just under $5,000 for 20 panels as a first phase and we paid $2,500 of that up front.

The job itself was executed very well, however, this was overshadowed by the bill. We had an estimate was about 5,000. They did call my husband halfway through the job saying there was a problem and they had to do some extra framing. The extra cost was not detailed at the time and maybe we should have been more assertive about asking. We were thinking I guess that it would be at the most about a grand more. When I got the bill for 14000.00 I had a little panic attack since we had saved for a little over the estimated cost but not that much. I think the biggest fault they had was lack of communicating cost. We are a family with a budget. We have spent the summer paying off the loan we got to pay for it.

Much of the experience seemed professional. The first red flag was when they got upset because I was taking pictures of the progress. I'm not sure if this was because the workers might have been illegal or because they didn't want some typically not visible workmanship documented. For example there were a couple places where the wood was dry rotted and crumbling. Because I was adding a dormer at the same time I was actually on the roof myself during some of the process. I saw a a couple instances where big hunks of bad wood fell into the interior space. Bigger pieces will matt the insulation causing both heat loss and ice dams. In one case the worker noticed I saw it and reached in and pulled it out. The other cases it was left there. But the biggest problem was after they were done. I went up on the roof with the foreman and we walked around while I showed him that the shingle lines were clearly not straight. Over a stretch of about 20 feet there was a 6" difference. He said it was the roof itself that was what was not straight. I said lets measure and he said there is no point because they are not going to fix it anyway. He actually said "We never guaranteed the work would be done to your asthetic satisfaction". Then I showed him a couple spots where nails were so low on the shingles that they were actually visible. That is, the course above didn't cover the nail head. In each case the worker had dabbed the nail head with some kind of calk. This is the kind of problem that will cause such a small leak that it will never be visible inside until 10 years later when the entire area under the roof had rotted so badly that it actually falls in. Here too he said 'you have a written guarantee against leaks' if it leaks you can make a claim then but we're not going to fix it now. What really killed me is when he said 'If I had known you were going to be pickey and go so far as to take pictures I would never have taken the job. (I'm not even going to go into the amount of destruction to shrubs and flowers around the house...)
Description of Work: I was adding a dormer to my attic (myself). The roof was old with 2 layers and the new section would need to be roofed anyway and I wanted the whole roof to match but the tear-off was too much for my 50 year old bones to manage so I decided to hire out the work of tearing off the rest of the old roof and putting down a new roof. The whole house is only about 750 sq ft so it was not a huge job.

After a promise of complete cleanup, we were left with a yard full of nails, staples, bits of shingle and insulation, cigarette butts, etc. Two roof vents were placed in the slanted ceiling of third floor instead of the attic space above the third floor. This mistake would have been apparent immediately but the installers did not remove them until I called them on it. My directions to save shingle facade on the front of the third floor were ignored. (The assembly had to be removed for the roofing process but I wanted to try to repair this original work or at least copy it.) We had to have the facade completely rebuilt. The flashing in this area was installed incorrectly by Austad and had to be corrected when the facade was put up. Although the roof appears to be installed well, I can only wonder what other mistakes were made or short cuts taken. The experience overall was frustrating and time consuming.

Aaron came out to do the estimate as scheduled. He was knowledgeable and informative. He was convincing about the product he was selling. We liked him immediately, and we were leaning towards choosing his company early on in our process. We ended up having six estimates done for the job, and the one form Aaron was in the middle of the bunch. We were torn. While we liked Aaron, we ultimately decided to go with a different comapny primarily due to Austad's ratings on Angie's List.

Very professional. Appreciate that he didn't take too much of my time in providing the estimate. ($6,025.00)
Description of Work: Aaron provided us with an estimate for a metal roof for our 20x20 garage. While we decided not to go with a metal roof, his estimate was much higher than other vendors. He did give us an estimate for a standing seam like (pro rib) roof for $3,575. However, my wife doesn't like that option.

I am quite happy with the service that was performed by Austad. They listened to what we wanted (and that was quite a lot), like upgrading the sky light to a crank venting style and picking vinyl shake siding that matched the look we were going for. The price was higher that others, but the quality more than made up for that difference. They made extra effort to keep the yard clean of nails for my dog, that effort shows through all of the projects i had them do. Oh and all of this was started and completed in 2 months time.
Description of Work: We have a 1936 rambler approximately 1,000 square feet with a 2 car garage. Austad construction re-decked the main roof of the house, fixed 5 bowed rafters, and installed 30 year arc shingles with Cobra north country roof venting. Along with the roofing service, Austad Construstruction tore out rotten wooden soffits and installed new wood that was then wrapped in Alum cladding. New vinyl shake siding was installed in the eves to replace old Masonite siding. Our old wooden windows wells were wrapped in alum to match all of the new soffit work. A new porch overhang was constructed and tied in with the siding on the eves. New gutters.

FIRST, THEY LEFT RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE JOB, SUPPOSEDLY TO OBTAIN PARTS.
