Gustavo did an excellent job repairing woodpecker damage to our siding. He went above and beyond in fixing the flashing that was allowing water to drain down the siding, which attracts insects and in turn attracts woodpeckers. I would highly recommend Gustavo, a very respectful, knowledgeable and hard working man.

Luke called back and said he would look at it and give us a bid. Never called back so I called him. He gave me a ballpark bid orally ($1800) and said he would follow up with an e mail bid. I never received one. Called the main phone number again (as Luke's message box was full), and that individual said someone would get back to me. No one did. Please let me know up front if you have no interest in my project so as not to waste my time and yours

Clear quote upfront, personable/professional technician working on roof. Once the work was completed, he showed me the work he completed. Happy with the outcome. I did call again for a quote on another project and call wasn't returned.

I had not heard of Kuhl before finding them on Angie's List. They were one of 4 estimates, and ultimately the company I chose to do the work. Luke managed the estimate. My late 70's house had an issue with heat loss and has some complex lines due to previous remodels. No doubt the two are related, Luke took the estimation and prep work very seriously, even bringing in a 3rd party energy efficiency company to consult on the project. Of the 4 bids, Kuhl was 5-6% higher than two. The outlined scope of work and thoroughness of the estimate justified the cost. The 4th company had a similar scope of work and put an equal amount of effort into the estimate, but the cost 15% greater. I signed the contract with Kuhl. I didn't have many questions, but the ones I asked were answered within 24 hours. Most within 1 hour. Luke went on to supervise the project. There were a couple of teams working at any given time and they seemed to work really well together. There were some minor issues: the ceiling was stepped-thru in one spot and the removal of the previous skylights cracked some interior drywall. More importantly, Kuhl brought out some folks to fix this within days of the project completion. The project was completed faster than they estimated and the crew removed all of the construction debris from the site. The work was clean and looked good. They next several days brought rain to test their effort; zero leaks. I'm really pleased with the entire process and, especially, the end result.

They are very good at replacing roofs! Steve and Luke know their business well, and the crew did their job correctly. A couple things needed to be addressed that had do do with gaps the original builder had created along the roof, and they sent out two excellent workers out who fixed those gaps. The roof looks great!

Perfect match of colors on the gutters and they use gutters designed for public buildings, yet they blend in with the house roof perfectly. Great job using their sub-contractor and well worth the money. I couldn't be happier with the service they have provided me, first in completing maintenance on my shake roof and now picking the correct sub contractor for additional gutter work that moves the water even further away from the house during heavy rains.

U PDATE: There were at least two, if not three, calls with Kuhl's scheduler before the visit where the scope of work was discussed; Kuhl is wrong to say this was a "surprise." However, Kuhl admits that the person sent was not qualified or prepared to address two or the three projects. Kuhl says it " invested hundreds of dollars in the time spent developing a plan to resolve their ice dam issues," but doesn't claim it ever provided an estimate or work proposal. I waited well past the different dates that an estimate was promised, with no estimate and no communication initiated by Kuhl to explain the delay, before I posted the review below. Whatever its past reputation, that Kuhl chose to respond to a factually accurate review with a personal attack says a lot. Kuhl was contacted based on Angie's List A rating regarding ice dam prevention in a particular area and repair of interior water damage, including walls, ceiling and built-in buffet. Brooke (the scheduler) said Kuhl could do this work and that Luke would come and provide an estimate. In a subsequent phone call, Kuhl was asked if they also did electrical work, as there was some work needed in the basement. Kuhl said yes and represented that Lukue would be able to look at and estimate this work at the same time he came to review the other two jobs. Luke didn't show up, but sent Nathan in his place. Nathan was on time, but was absolutely unprepared and unable to provide estimates for two of the three projects (the interior repair and the electrical). It wasn't clear whether he even knew those were areas which Kuhl had agreed to estimate. He said he would take pictures that Luke would use to prepare an estimate for the electrical and interior work. Nathan was professional and seemed to know about the limited area that he was at the house to talk about: ice dam prevention. However, it was quickly apparent that Nathan's agenda was both much bigger than mine and more limited than mine: he was there to sell a complete re-insulation of the entire roof area; while I wanted to know why I still had ice dams in a particular area despite new insulation and venting. He spent about 30-45 minutes inspecting different parts of the roof, crawl spaces and attic, and answering questions. He dismissed the existing fiberglass insulation (which was new and at an R38 thickness) and the various attic vents installed as inadequate to provide proper insulation and venting. Nathan couldn't speak to exactly what the proposed options would be; he explained that the specific solution and options would be determined by Luke in the written estimate. Nathan did suggest that Kuhl's "prescriptive" proposal would probably involve removing all existing insulation (from the entire roof area), reinsulating with a spray foam and some unknown alternative strategy for ventilation. Just what the alternative was, how it would be accomplished, what it would cost or why Kuhl's insulation and ventilation would prevent ice dams wasn't really explained. Nathan provided assurances that Luke would provide estimates for all three projects by the end of the week and if there was some delay, we would still be contacted by the end of the week with a new date. The end of the week came with no word and no estimate. Kuhl never provided an estimate for the ice dam prevention work or any of the other work. When they finally returned calls inquiring about the status of work estimates for the three projects, we were told, for the first time, that the part of the company that might handle the electrical and the interior work was scheduling well out into the future (the implication being that if we wanted the work any time soon, Kuhl couldn't do it). This was not mentioned in the multiple conversations to schedule the estimate work. Kuhl was called based upon their A rating and am disappointed in Kuhl and in Angie's list. It was quite a disappointment to have a contractor with an A rating send someone who was unprepared and unqualified to estimate 2 of three projects scheduled to be estimated. Equally frustrating was that Nathan couldn't explain what work would actually be done, or, for example, what Kuhl would do to ventilate the areas. Under the circumstances, I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised when they didn't provide an estimate. I won't call them again.
Description of Work: Work to be estimated was for electrical (basement), interior repairs to walls, ceiling and builtin buffet (dining room) and proposal for addressing ice dams in northeast part of house.

Response from Kuhl's Contracting
A note from [removed member name] First, this client asked us to provide an estimate to address ice dam issues, work we happen to do perhaps more than anybody in the state of Minnesota. They surprised us the day we showed up by adding to the scope to include electrical and other work. Clearly, we would have sent somebody else out for that type of estimate had we been given proper information. We don't need practice and sending out the wrong person simply giant waste of our time. Second, and this is where I am trying to be as professional and gracious as possible, after a quarter century in business I have learned that there is a small percentage of homeowners who are best to avoid it altogether. Everyone in our organization who had contact with this homeowner knew immediately we should do just that in this situation. Our greatest mistake was agreeing to provide them a free consultation. We invested hundreds of dollars in the time spent developing a plan to resolve their ice dam issues. In return we get this review. We have internal processes for helping us avoid such people, many of whom find us through Angie's List. Or record of excellence speaks for itself. Notice that the people we actually work for have incredible things to say about our character and quality as an organization. That says something.

I very much appreciated their prompt response providing a project estimate (I had asked about gutters). While many companies only seem to give a cost after you have to schedule almost an hour with them, then go through a presentation on why they are the best..., Kuhl presented a no-pressure estimate with some recommendations based on my questions. Very helpful in determines which projects to move forward on after purchasing a new home.

Initially discussed project with Steve Kuhl, great guy. Luke was their roofing guy so he took over and provided estimates etc. Had to meet with insurance adjuster several times as well as having many discussions as insurance adjuster was quite "difficult" to work with. Eventually the insurance company approved and work could commence. From day one the entire crew was on time and cleaned up every evening. Luke was there in the beginning and stop by regularly. The construction manager was knowledgeable and friendly as well. The work began when they told me they would as well as finishing on time. The clean was great as well. I walked around the house and could hardly tell they had been there.

1. Seal all attic bypasses. Furnish and install new air chutes in every accessible rafter. Install R7 flex duct over dryer vent. Install R19 batting to skylight tunnels and install tyvack wrap to skylight tunnels. R19 batting to laundry chute. Installed and sealed R7 boxes to all can lights and bath fans. Replace 21 9x16 soffit vents. Install blown insulation in attic space to achieve level of R50 Cellulose. Clean up and remove and properly dispose debris. Everything is excellent and wished we found Kuhl's sooner.
Description of Work: We called them because we were tired of ice dams in the front of our house. We had spoken to our roofers about ice dams, they said the new roof would take care of. Well no it didn't instead we had water damage in our entry way. I checked Angies List and found Kuhl's Contracting. I spoke with Luke and he came out and really checked everything out. We felt very comfortable with him and gave the go ahead. they came when they said they would . They did everything plus all the clean up. We have no ice dams and the house feels quieter and warmer.

We have a 90 year old home in south Minneapolis and had problems with leaks and ice dams last winter. Part of the issue was the metal flashing on our roof and chimney, in addition to leaking around our chimney with the original mortar falling apart. We had four masonry companies come and give us estimates. Two were very expensive and not very informative at all, while Kuhl and another company actually met with us, explained the issues and gave us very reasonable quotes. We decided to go with Kuhl and they were very professional and kept in contact with us throughout the process. They performed the repair in two stages, weeks apart. The first repair was done in about one full day, repairing the roof and installing flashing and new shingles. The crew worked very hard and put in 12+ hour day, did a great job and cleaned up well afterward. The second repair was sandblasting old mortar out, masonry to the top of the chimney and retuckpointing the entire chimney. This took a few days but again the crew was very good and conscious of our landscaping and clean up. Overall, they did a great job and our new chimney and flashing look great. We are very pleased with Kuhl and would absolutely use them again in the future.
Description of Work: Fixed a leak caused by ice dams by refabricating and installing new metal flashing for large portion of the roof and chimney, repairing part of the roof, and tuckpointing the entire chimney with rebricking the top five chimney rows.

The whole team was professional, nice, and punctual. I was very impressed. Kuhl came as a referral from friends and we wouldn't hesitate to use them again for roof repair. We had horrible ice dams last winter and Kuhl came out to assess our roof, address a leak we discovered this spring, and also discuss options for insulation in our attic and space underneath our kitchen. The team did a great job explaining the problems, talking through our choices and pricing and giving us recommendations. All of the work (from the roof repair to insulation) were done in the same day - which made it really easy for us taking only 1 day off of work. We really appreciated how punctual and professional they were. We had issues in the past with other companies/contractors hiring young, inexperienced workers to do the job. But Kuhl was different - the people that showed up to quote the work, were the same people that showed up to complete the work. Kuhl may cost only a bit more, but the quality of work they did was fantastic. We will do more business with Kuhl down the road, no hesitation.

We have used Kuhl's previously to remove an ice dam, and this year with the crazy amount of snow we had, we had more ice dams this year. I lost the contact information for Kuhl's and used another firm. Bad mistake! The other firm was a LOT more expensive. I subsequently found the receipt from previous years from Kuhl's and gave them a call when we had another ice dam leak this year. This time, we had them shovel the roof completely, and they came same day, and did a great job. Highly recommend them, and I will NOT loose their contact information again.

Everything went as expected. Both the owner, Steve, and the project manager, Tom, were very responsive. We appreciated having a detailed bid with different replacement options. All the work was completed in the time promised. We would recommend this company to anyone needing roofing.
Description of Work: The company removed our cedar shingle roof and replaced it with a good quality asphalt roof. They also replaced the gutters, flashing, etc. bringing all up to current code. In addition, they fixed/replaced the chimney cap and removed some old vents that were no longer needed. Finally, they repaired a window located along a roof line that, due to accumulation of moisture and bad drainage, had rotted. They were able to do the repair for much less than the cost would have been if we had replaced the entire window.

Great! They scheduled within a few days of calling, they arrived promptly, Carlos was very professional and knowledgeable. The two guys worked together for the hourly rate and they worked fast and furiously. Only issue was all the ice/snow from the roof avalanched on to the gas meter and outdoor intake/exhaust pipes for the furnace and hot water heater. The office promptly tracked them down and they came back within 2 hours to shovel everything out. They were reasonable in price considering the market for ice dam removal this year and very knowledgable about special roofs and resolution to prevent the problem in the future. I highly recommend this team.

It went well and they did a nice job. It was a pleasure to come home to see my clean roof, at least until it snowed again. I had trouble finding someone who would work on a metal roof. The came out within a day or two of my call. They used steam to clear the ice. The work took about as long as they said it would (2.5 hours for my ranch-style house). The most impressive part, in my opinion, is how they cleared the couple of feet of snow and ice that fell on my sidewalk and driveway. I do not think I could have cleared that myself. At least not before spring. There was electricity in the garage for them to use, but they needed to use water from inside the house (my outside faucets were frozen). Happily, it wasn't extremely cold that day. It was pretty expensive, but I would hire them again.
