Description of Work: Jason and his crew of one did an excellent job on the construction of our 2 level deck. To begin the project he presented several configurations to consider. He answered our questions and brought questions to us and listened to what we wanted. One issue we had was the finishing of the outside edge of the stairways. He ended up figuring out a way that he hadn't used before. It is a very nice touch. |He took special care to avoid damaging the roots of the trees near the project, revising the plan when he dug and found tree roots, and even calling an arborist for information before moving ahead. |He was patient with delays we created with vacation days and solving water issues after the big June rains. He preferred not to work while we were on vacation so we were always there to watch and make decisions as they arose, rather than just working and letting us live with work done while away, like some contractors do, which we appreciated. | The price reflects exactly the materials we selected. He brought multiple material samples and gave us good information about each option. | |Jason is knowledgeable, pleasant to work with, arrived when he said he would and informed us when he would not be on site. The work site was as clean as possible and the radio was respectfully reasonable in volume. We were pleased with everything and would definitely hire him again. | | |

I contacted a few decking companies to get pricing on removing our old deck and replacing in with a maintenance free deck around our new pool. Jason contacted we right a way and scheduled an appointment to come out and take a look and got me a quote back in a couple of days. The other companies I contacted didn't bother to call me back and the one that did missed our scheduled appointment. I found Jason very knowledgeable and professional. He helped us with our design and helped us pick out the materials that worked best for what we were trying to do. Every time we had a question Jason would get back to us right a way with the answer. Jason took care of all the permits and any issues that came up with the inspectors. Jason and his partner Tristian were always on time and did a great job of cleaning up before they left each day. The deck completely exceeded my expectations. I was very pleased with the overall experience and would highly recommend Building Decks & Beyond to anyone that is interested in a professional trouble free experience.

Overall I would say Building Decks and Beyond goes way above and beyond! We met with three deck builders in April, and all three were professional, competent and didn't differ too much in their pricing estimates. We chose Jason because he seemed to be the most knowledgeable about the pros and cons of different decking choices and colors, he gave us a clear and detailed pricing estimate, and he was able to start the job sooner and finish in less time than the other contractors. Also, he seemed to be the easiest to communicate with and has a calm, professional demeanor. The job took about two weeks and went very smoothly. It probably would've taken even less time if it hadn't rained, but even on rainy days Jason and his crew came out as soon as the rain stopped and resumed working. Jason was patient with me as I changed my mind a couple of times about decking color and materials. We went with the Azek decking in the color "Cobre," and have a border, top rail and fascia in a contrasting, darker color called "Acacia." It looks fantastic - we are really happy with it! Jason and his crew member were very meticulous about doing the job right. They found some rotted wood underneath the stucco near the corner of the house where it meets the deck and repaired that at a very minimal extra charge. They also installed some house wrap around a new window to prevent further damage to the wood there. And, they even used some extra decking to build a little ramp for my geriatric dog, whose dog door leads out onto the deck.Another way they went above and beyond: about midway through the project Jason and his crew worked extra hard to get the deck floor and railing completed enough by the weekend so that I could entertain some dinner guests on it Saturday night.I would definitely recommend hiring Jason to build your deck or for any other remodeling project. I am sure we will call him when we are ready to remodel our bathrooms.
Description of Work: Installed new, second-story deck and multi-level staircase using Azek decking, Diamond Pier footings, Builder Rail composite railing and LED low-voltage accent lights on rails and stair risers. They were quick and professional but a quite a bit higher price wise for a deck redo. We had quotes done for cedar and timber deck. They were easy to work with it. They did with details and were quick to respond. We would have been happy with them but it is just that they were a quite a bit higher.

Building Decks and Beyond came out promptly and gave me a written estimate for replacing my old deck with a new composite deck. The quote was very reasonable and the owner, Jason, was very easy to work with. They stuck to their schedule, and cleaned up after themselves each day. The entire project took about a week and was very painless for us as the home owner. The finished deck looks great and we are very happy with the result. I would have no qualms about using Building Decks and Beyond again and I would recommend them to anyone.

Jason responded very quickly to my email request and was at the house within a day after that. His planning and explanations of our options was very clear and very informative. We have used Building Decks and Beyond, LLC for a new deck installation and after that a bathroom remodel (see my other reviews). For the start of the bathroom remodel, we had Jason investigate an occasional water leak in our bathroom window. The discovery was that the problem was a long-term water intrusion issue that had caused rotting inside our walls and needed to be explored to discover the extent of the damage. Jason took the reigns and called a stucco company to come out and start removing stucco to begin the exploration. This window is on the second of three stories on this particular wall and it was evenutally discovered that the problem originated with inadequate flashing in a particular spot on our roof that allowed water to occasionally leak behind the stucco The damage was not trivial, extending up to the third floor, and, especially being in the dead of winter in Minnesota, turned into a challenging and rather long-term project. We don't know what we would have done without Jason in charge as we mostly were able to sit back while he coordinated all required parties (stucco specialist, roofer, electrician, drywaller, painters, mold company) and he did the carpentry/wood replacement, house trim replacement, window replacement and other related work. He also worked with the city engineer and arranged for all permits, inspections and any other need that come along. We would have been lost trying to handle this monumental task on our own. He kept us informed of all activities and schedules and consulted us when a decision needed to be made on our part. We are VERY grateful we had Jason at the helm when this problem was discovered and, making a long story short, are very happy with the results. Above and beyond, Jason offered to replace several pieces of trim on our house that had woodpecker damage, which we did, and he also offered to replace some very high spotlights that had been non-functional for years because we didn't know how to get them replaced. Outstanding! One note: while all this was going on, Minnesota was having an especially bad winter and we, like so many others, had damaging ice dams that caused some skylights to leak and required scraping, retexturing and painting of some of our ceilings. Jason arranged for his drywaller and painters to take care of this as well. And and his painters painted a bedroom for us as well at our request. All-over professional job in every category.

Jason put on a new deck for us last year (great job - I have a review of that as well) and we knew he did more than decks. Since we knew how it was to work with Jason and how honest and conscientious he is, we called him up to ask if he would be interested in doing our bathroom. With his acceptance of the job, we did not feel the need to conduct a bidding process. We knew the price would be fair and the job well done. Our project became quite complicated as part of what we had asked him to do was investigate an occasional leak we had in the bathroom window. That turned out to be a rather major long-term water intrusion issue that required interior and exterior work on our house, which Jason also took on. Even though it all kind of blended together, I know these reports are supposed to be only about one project, so I will limit this one to the bathroom and create another for the water intrusion issue. For our bathroom, Jason and his coworker either completed the work or contracted out to specialists, such as electrician/plumber/granite installers, etc. As always, Jason demonstrated his patience, working with us as we extensively researched, searched, and asked questions about all the minute details of elements of a bathroom -- each fixture, each tile option, each design idea, each new requirement (such as our decision to put in shower speakers). Jason came up with some great ideas (like his solid but open-bottomed shower bench, which is great) and worked to accommodate any specific details we wanted. It all came together beautifully, we are very happy with our bathroom and enjoy it every day.
Description of Work: Bathroom remodel -- tear-out and rebuild/retiling of shower, new shower fixtures and speakers, retiling of floor, install new window, new granite counter, new sinks/fixtures, new lights, new toilet, some wall repair/contruction.

When we purchased our home some eight years ago I knew I would have to eventually address the outdated master bathroom. In March when the shower door fell off its hinges I decide that time had come. I had been checking out bath fixtures, flooring, showers and vanities so I would be prepared for this day. On my wife's urging (she works with Jason's wife) I called Jason from Building Decks & Beyond to provide an estimate. I'm not sure I've ever dealt with a more personable or professional contractor than Jason. He provided before and after pictures of previous bathrooms he had remodeled, many very good suggestions on remodel options he could provide and answered all of the questions I had about his services. In a short time he provided an estimate based on all the work we discussed that I would like done. I was prepared for the inevitable sticker shock but to my pleasure I felt his quote was very fair and reasonable, even significantly below what I had expected. His quote was the lowest I had seen and I agreed to have him do the job. Jason provided complete details prior to the actual construction start of what I could expect and when those things would occur. He started the project less than a week after I agreed to have him do the work. The construction went smoothly and the professionals Jason used to provide electric and plumbing services were top notch. Each day my home was left neat and free from construction clutter (very important to me as I judge professionals on their awareness for the customer's needs). I also am the type of person that after the worker leaves for the day, I have to go in with my tape measure and square and check out what was done that day. Everything was perfect. Jason is meticulous and relentless at his profession. The bathroom was completed quickly with no surprises other than Jason lowering the final price slightly due to some savings incurred during the construction. Jason delivered exactly what I contracted him for and he did it in the time frame and price we agreed upon. I could not be happier with the outcome. I would recommend Building Decks & Beyond and Jason to anyone that has residential construction work to do (or any other service he provides). In a world where it can be difficult to trust who you are dealing with, I trust Jason and plan on using him for future projects at our home.
Description of Work: I contracted Building Decks & Beyond LLC to do a complete remodel of my master bathroom. The contract price did not include the cost for the shower, vanity and toilet. I purchased those on my own (which was my desire) and the contractor factored installation in the contract price. Work done included removal and disposal of all current fixtures, realignment of plumbing and electrical lines, installation of all new fixtures, floor, ceiling and walls. All that was left to do was hang the towel bars but that was only because I could not make up my mind on which ones I wanted. I finally bought them and installed them myself in a few minutes.

This was a major home improvement project that we were undertaking. Jason made it so easy and pleasant. He took time to ask use what we wanted and listened to us. We never felt rushed when dealing with him. He explained everything to us, and made suggestions that we never would have thought of, or didn't realize might have an impact later on. There were no "surprise" costs. He was very organized, everything went as scheduled. The sub-contractors,(plumbing, electrical, painting), he used were great. They said they really like working with Jason because he always has everything ready, and the communication with him is always clear. The basement finishing caused no disruption to the household. The basement is like an apartment for my college-age kids,(downfall, they might want to stay longer than I want!!). The basement was so wonderful, we had Jason re-build the deck. He designed the deck and modified the stairs so that our arthritic dog can easily go up and down the steps now, but we don't notice the difference. That has been a godsend for our Jasmine. I highly recommend Building Decks and Beyond. Hopefully I will be getting the kitchen redone in a year by Jason.
Description of Work: Jason and his crew finished our basemet, ( design,re-placed the windows, carpentry, drywall, plumbing, electrical, flooring, cabinetry, gutters, painting). That project was flawless and so we had him build us a new deck.

I had Jason come out to do an estimate to redo our deck with maintenance-free materials. I had received his name from a friend who had hired Jason as an employee when he was in the deck business. He said that Jason was an upstanding kind of guy. I think he might have been when he worked for my friend, but now that Jason is out on his own I think there has been a change. Jason came out an we spent about an hour together. I told him that we had limited funds to do the project and we were looking for ways to keep the cost down by possibly using cedar railings rather more expensive composite. I know I purposely stressed our budget and that we had other projects for this Spring. We discussed various materials and he seemed very knowledgeable. We specifically discuss our project and our options. He asked me how old the deck was and I said I didn't know as it was on the house when we bought it 13 years ago. He said; "green treated lumber only last 20 years" and then went on to say, "your underdecking is in pretty good shape, I don't see any evidence of rotting or decay.". Jason left and was to send me an estimate via e-mail. He got back to me a day later; "Upon careful consideration for liability and safety reasons I cannot estimate your project without figuring a tear down and rebuild of at least the upper deck." It would have been a different story if Jason could have said this while we was here and could have pointed out the specific areas of his concern. In my opinion, I really felt as though there was a bait/switched. He never mentioned the concern when I was with him and in fact he thought it was ok. I did not ask him come back. I thought that he was looking for a quick way to gain several thousands more while hiding behind legal liability. I think Jason's business must be good and doesn't need to be accomodating. There must be enough cream out there for him to go after where people are not questioning his motives.
Description of Work: We did not sign Jason to do the project.

After interviewing several builders, my wife and I chose Building Decks & Beyond to build our new deck. We have been delighted with our choice! We had spent a substantial amount of time researching designs and materials but were still confused as to what would work best in Minnesota's harsh climate to provide us a deck that was as maintenance free as possible yet still look good over the years. Being an engineer by profession, I was also concerned that the deck be solidly built. Jason was very patient with us listening to our questions, examining our plans, making several excellent suggestions, and even fabricating mock-ups of decking/railing combinations to aid our decisions. He even aided us in moving some very large landscaping rocks away from the deck site. Jason and his crew did a superb job. Jason kept us apprised of the progress and made additional very helpful suggestions during the construction to provide us with the deck we had envisioned. My wife was especially pleased that Jason kept the site free of debris and throughly cleaned up the area after completion. We got the deck we wanted plus Jason installed additional wiring and a large enough transformer so we can easily add additional lighting in the future as we get used to our new deck and decide what lighting effects we would eventually want. During the final inspection, we pointed out a few minor faults which Jason quickly remedied. It was obvious to us that Jason takes great pride in his craftsmanship. Jason had shown us photos of some of his other non-deck projects. Seeing the results of our own deck project, we will definitely consider Jason for our future needs.

I don't think it could be overstated how pleased we are that we decided to go with Building Decks and Beyond, LLC. Jason provided a very clear and competitive bid that took into account many customizations. From the beginning several things stood out from the other bidders on our project. First, Jason is not only the face of the company, but also either performs or oversees all of the work. His attention to detail was apparent from the first time he came over to do the bid. He also was the only one that stressed building a new frame rather than use the old one -- something we were hesitant to do in the very beginning, but it soon became obvious he knew best and we're thankful for that. He was willing to spend substantial time with us and truly listened to what we had to say. I had even mentioned somewhat in passing that I liked the border-finish seam shown on the Timbertech web site, not thinking that we could actually do that, and without further discussion, Jason did it. It is really a great detail that adds a lot to the look of the deck. Working with Jason (as well as his coworkers) was a pleasure. He was always responsive, always friendly and always attentive to the quality and detail of his work. He worked with us patiently throughout the process, accommodating any changes we desired along the way. Our house sits on a hill and the deck spans the hill from just inches off the ground on one side to about eight feet on the other. Old stairs going down to the lower level were no longer up to code, and there was no room to make a wider one without making that part of the deck smaller so Jason was able to provide an extension there instead, using the existing footings for the frame and extending the deck two feet beyond, where the stairs were previously. There was no other easy access to our yard, so we gave Jason our somewhat vague ideas on extending the other part of the deck out far enough that steps could reach the ground on that part of the hill, also accommodating a tree that grows right in that area. Jason came up with a very nice design and executed it beautifully. He even took one section that could have been a rather drab straight railing area and instead created a wonderful architectural feature. We had an issue come up with the wood tiered retaining wall under the deck that exposed itself after the old deck tear-down and instead of it becoming a barrier to their continuing work, Jason suggested they could take care of it. They did, it was also a very nice job, and they were able to move on without any hassle on our part whatsoever. In fact, we had no hassles at all with the entire process with Building Decks and Beyond. It was a pleasant experience from start to finish. What we ended up with was a beautiful deck and masterful craftsmanship. And Jason even made it seamless! We couldn't be happier with the finished product and with the experience. As for the question of whether or not we would hire Building Decks and Beyond, LLC again, we already have. Jason will be installing a new exterior door frame, door and two storm doors for us in the near future.
Description of Work: Tear-down and removal of an old deck and construction of a new deck with design modifications, including frame, and new footings where needed with the new design. Timbertech Twin Finish decking in cedar finish with redwood finish border, Timbertech builder's rail and Timbertech lighting. Modifications include a two-foot extension from the frame of one portion of the deck and redesign of another portion to extend out to our yard with two steps into the yard and a new open step design into another area.

Overall, my wife and I feel fortunate that we decided to hire Building Decks & Beyond. The process left us with absolutely no regrets and the craftsmanship demonstrated by Building Decks & Beyond was incredible. We used Angie's List to acquire four bids for the construction of our deck. The quotes dramatically ranged in price; however, we felt most comfortable with Jason Wrolstad of Building Decks and Beyond as he clearly walked us through the construction process, explaining what his estimate would and would not include. He provided us a timely estimate and maintained continuous communication (via phone or e-mail) when we had additional questions / modifications on the estimate. Originally, composite decking seemed out of our price range; however, Jason explained that there was a more affordable composite decking from Timbertech called Reliaboard. Jason's calm and positive attitude, communication, and price made us feel comfortable with using his services. Jason worked with our city inspector to acquire the proper building permits and arranged inspection times. From the start to the end of the project, Jason and his staff worked full days (weather permitting) to accomplish the project in the time they promised. If a problem did occur on site, Jason did everything in his power to correct the issue and informed us about any changes. For example, our stairs did not walk out onto level ground and by city code they have to. Jason provided us with several solutions for us to choose from. We decided to have pavers installed at the base of the stairs and Jason brought in a mason to assist us with that aspect of the project while still maintaining the project schedule. At the completion of the project, Jason sat down with us and discussed the steps to care for the deck, submit our composite deck warranty, and answer any additional questions we had. During the final inspection of the deck by the city building inspector, the inspector said he was impressed by the quality of work and the sturdiness of the deck. I would not hesitate to recommend Jason and his staff to anyone. A great combination of affordability, craftsmanship, and fantastic communication make this company great.
Description of Work: My wife and I were looking to have a deck built onto the back of our home and were considering either cedar or composite decking materials. Building Decks & Beyond, LLC constructed a 14' x 16' Timbertech Reliaboard composite deck with a 4' x 4' stair landing with two flights of stairs.

Initially Jason stopped by to discuss what I was looking for. I explained my goals and what I had in mind and asked for his input. While I had other companies submitting estimates, what swayed me to contract with Jason was 1) the effort he took to research the best way to get the project done (consulting with inspectors, etc), 2) his responsiveness to all my questions and concerns, and 3) his happiness to do construction work. Every step of the project was explained to me. If a hiccup occurred, it was immediately addressed. In one instance a load of sub par lumber was rejected and returned before I had a chance to comment. He gave attention to the smallest of details and if I asked, gave a thorough explanation. When it came to researching--he chased down suppliers to match siding, shingles, etc. He and his co-worker showed up daily on time and set right to work without bothering anyone in the house. The work area was kept neat and clean and safe. They worked tirelessly in a shadeless backyard and never complained. The deck is beautiful and exceeds my expectations.
Description of Work: Custom designed and built cedar deck with a gazebo.
