SALESPERSON WAS PROMPT, PROFESSIONAL, AND TOOK HIS TIME TO EVALUATE THE SITUATION. GAVE AN UPFRONT ESTIMATE, BUT TOOK A WHILE TO PROVIDE A WRITTEN ESTIMATE (EVEN AFTER PROMISING TO HAVE A WRITTEN ESTIMATE TO US BY THE END OF THE WEEK). ESTIMATE WAS IN THE BALLPARK, BUT WAS THE THIRD LOWEST THAT WE RECEIVED, AND WE DECIDED TO GO WITH A DIFFERENT COMPANY.

STEVES HAWES WAS THE SALES REPRESENTATIVE. HE SEEMED TO BE MORE A TECHNICIAN THAN A SALESMAN, WHICH HAS PROS AND CONS. HE REALLY KNEW TECHNICAL THINGS, ESPECIALLY ABOUT WAYS TO IMPROVE AIR FLOW. HOWEVER, HIS ATTENTION TO DETAIL IN THE ACTUAL BID WASN'T AS GREAT. AS WE CONTINUED DISCUSSING HIS PROPOSAL, HE KEPT THINKING OF THINGS TO ADD (OH, YOU WANT A NEW THERMOSTAT, THAT'S $X MORE). HE DID NOT LEAVE US WITH A WRITTEN QUOTE--HE HAD TO FAX IT, AND IT ARRIVED A WEEK LATER. THERE WAS ALSO A MIXUP ON THE APPT TIME--I THOUGHT 5PM, HE THOUGHT 6PM, AND SINCE HE DIDN'T CALL TO CONFIRM UNTIL HE WAS ON HIS WAY, WE WERE LEFT WONDERING IF HE WAS COMING (AT THAT TIME OF DAY, THE OFFICE WAS NO LONGER OPEN TO ''LIVE'' CALLS TO THE SALES AREA). I INDICATE I WOULD NOT HIRE FOR FUTURE WORK BECAUSE I PREFER SEDGWICK AT THIS POINT, NOT THAT I FEEL TOTAL COMFORT IS ''BAD''.

THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN WAS PUNCTUAL AND VERY COURTEOUS. HE PERFORMED THE REPAIRS IN A TIMELY MANNER AND EXPLAINED THE SERVICE AGREEMENT WELL.
Description of Work: THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN CHECKED THE OVEN TO DETERMINE EXACTLY WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. THE DETERMINATION WAS THAT THE OVEN'S IGNITER WAS NO LONGER FUNCTIONING. HE INFORMED ME OF THE COST TO REPAIR (PARTS AND LABOR) AND ASKED IF HE SHOULD CONTINUE. UPON AGREEING, HE BEGIN THE WORK. IN TOTAL, THE WORK TOOK APPROXIMATELY 25 MIN. AFTER CHECKING THE OVEN TO MAKE SURE IT WAS IGNITING, WE WENT OVER THE SERVICE AGREEMENT, EXPLANATION OF THE BILLING AND HE WAS KIND ENOUGH TO TELL ME A COMPANY FROM WHOM I COULD PURCHASE REPLACEMENT TURN-ON KNOBS. HE WORKED EFFICIENTLY AND CLEANLY. PAYMENT WAS MADE BY CHECK AND HE DEPARTED.

OUR TECHNICIAN COMPLETED A FURNACE AND AIR-CONDITIONER TUNE-UP. HE FOUND THE HEAT EXCHANGER VERY RUSTED AND STRESSED. THE AIR-CONDITIONER DESIGN WAS POOR. OUR TECHNICIAN STRONGLY RECOMMENDED ANNUAL MAINTENANCE TO ASSURE GOING FORWARD THE SAFETY AND EFFICIENCY OF THE EQUIPMENT. OUR MAINTENANCE PROGRAM PROVIDES ANNUAL TUNE-UPS FOR FURNACE AND AIR-CONDITIONERS, ALONG WITH SAME DAY SERVICE. ALL MANUFACTURES RECOMMEND ANNUAL PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE TO MAINTAIN EQUIPMENT OPERATIONS AND EFFICIENCY. WARRANTIES ARE VOIDED IF ANNUAL MAINTENANCE IS NOT COMPLETED ON A REGULAR BASIS. WE ALSO RECOMMENDED DUCT CLEANING BECAUSE THEIR DIRTY DUCTS AFFECTED THE EFFICIENCY OF THEIR EQUIPMENT.

THE SALESPERSON USED ABUSIVE HARD-SELL TACTICS, AFTER I HAD SAID, ''WELL, I SUPPOSE WE'LL GO WITH THE TYPE OF INSTALLATION YOU ARE RECOMMENDING,'' HE WASN'T ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE MY SCHEDULE TO SIGN AN AGREEMENT AND ACCEPT A DOWN PAYMENT FOR MORE THAN A WEEK. I HAD TOLD HIM THAT SPEED WAS ESSENTIAL. WHEN I TOLD HIM THAT I HAD CONTRACTED WITH ANOTHER COMPANY, HE ACCUSED ME OF LYING AND TOLD ME THAT I SHOULD APOLOGIZE TO HIM. HE THEN HAD THE NERVE TO TELL ME THAT I SHOULD CALL HIM IF ANYTHING WENT WRONG WITH THE INSTALLATION I HAD ORDERED. I WOULDN'T CALL HIM IF HE WAS THE LAST SALESMAN AVAILABLE.

I WAS VERY PLEASED WITH TOTAL COMFORT'S WORK. THE SALESPERSON WAS ON TIME AND THOROUGH, NO PRESSURE OR GIMMICKS. OF THE FOUR COMPANIES WHO GAVE ME QUOTES, THEY WERE THE ONLY ONES TO TAKE THE TIME TO INSPECT MY ENTIRE SYSTEM INCLUDING DUCTS AND RETURNS, AND AS A CONSEQUENCE THEY WERE ABLE TO FIX A BOTTLENECK IN MY RETURN DUCTS WHICH HAS IMPROVED THE AIR QUALITY IN MY HOUSE SIGNIFICANTLY. THEY WERE ALSO ABLE TO DO THE JOB WITHIN A FEW DAYS OF MY DECISION, WHEN OTHER COMPANIES WERE QUOTING WEEKS. THE INSTALL CREW WAS ON TIME AND PLEASANT, AND THEY DID A GOOD JOB OF CLEANING UP AFTERWARDS.

HE TOLD ME THE HRV INTAKE VENT WAS IMPROPERLY LOCATED TOO CLOSE TO THE FIREPLACE VENT, BUT THE COMPANY WHICH INSTALLED THE UNIT CHECKED IT OVER AND ASSURED ME THAT THE INSTALLATION WAS CORRECTLY DONE, THAT THE VENT NEAR THE FIREPLACE VENT WAS NOT THE INTAKE VENT, AND THAT THE TOTAL COMFORT TECHNICIAN WAS WRONG.

I SELECTED TOTAL COMFORT FROM FOUR BIDS THAT I RECEIVED FROM TOP COMPANIES ON ANGIE'S LIST. I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THEIR WORK. MY IMPRESSION FROM OTHER ANGIES LIST EVALUATIONS WAS THAT TC HAS A PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON UNDERSTANDING HOW AIR FLOW IMPACTS BOTH COMFORT AND THE HEALTH OF THE FURNACE. MY EXPERIENCE CONFIRMS THIS IMPRESSION. THEY WERE THE ONLY COMPANY THAT DISCUSSED THIS AT LENGTH IN WHAT I FELT WAS A KNOWLEDGEABLE WAY. THEY ALSO HAVE A SERVICE IN WHICH THEY TEST FOR CRACKS IN THE HEAT EXCHANGE. I MADE USE OF IT AND WAS REALLY SURPRISED AT WHAT THEY SHOWED ME. I HAD THE GAS COMPANY COME OUT TWICE WITHIN RECENT MEMORY AND THEY NEVER EVEN CHECKED FOR THE CRACKS THAT TOTAL COMFORT FOUND. AFTER INSTALLATION THEY CAME BACK THE NEXT DAY TO MAKE SOME ADJUSTMENTS. TOTAL COMFORT INSTALLS TRANE FURNACES, AND AS FAR AS I CAN TELL, THERE'S NO REASON TO DOUBT THE QUALITY OF THESE UNITS.

NONE OF THE OTHER COMPANIES REALLY KNEW WHAT TO DO ABOUT OUR COMPLAINTS ABOUT HOW THE UPSTAIRS LEVEL STAYS 5-10 DEGREES HOTTER IN THE SUMMER THAN THE REST OF THE HOUSE. IN ADDITION TO PUTTING IN A GREAT NEW SYSTEM, THEY EASILY FIXED OUR AIRFLOW PROBLEM WITHOUT PUNCHING HOLES IN ALL THE WALLS. ALL OF THE TECHNICIANS WE DEALT WITH WERE EXTREMELY PROFESSIONAL AND VERY COURTEOUS. OUR ONE COMPLAINT WAS THAT ONE DAY DURING THE THREE DAY INSTALLATION ONE OF US HAD TO WAIT AN EXTRA HOUR FOR THEM TO SHOW UP. IT TURNED OUT TO BE A MISCOMMUNICATION WITH THE SCHEDULER. WE WOULD DEFINITELY USE THEM AGAIN.
Description of Work: REPLACED FURNACE, ADDED MORE POWERFUL A/C FAN, HEPA FILTER, AIR EXCHANGE SYSTEM, AND ENLARGED RETURN DUCT WORK.

THE SERVICE REP TOOK ONE QUICK LOOK AT MY CENTRAL AIR UNIT AND SAID THAT IT WAS TOO OLD AND WASN'T WORTH FIXING. HE NEVER EVEN OPENED UP THE UNIT. HE THEN PROCEEDED TO SHOW ME GLOSSY BROCHURES OF NEW UNIT OPTIONS WITH QUOTES. I THEN DECIDED THAT HE MIGHT NOT EVEN BE A TECHNICIAN, BUT A SALESMAN, SINCE HE WAS REFERRING TO JOBS THAT HE HAD RECENTLY ''SOLD'', NOT INSTALLED. HE WAS PUSHING THE TRANE MODEL HEAVILY AND EVEN ASKED ME OUTRIGHT IF I WAS PLANNING ON OBTAINING OTHER BIDS. WHEN I SAID YES, HE PROCEEDED TO TELL ME THE DISADVANTAGES OF THE OTHER MANUFACTURERS. I ALMOST ASKED HIM IF HE WAS GETTING A COMMISSION ON TRANE! FORTUNATELY, I GOT A SECOND OPINION. THIS TIME A REAL TECHNICIAN CAME OUT, REPLACE A $12 CAPACITOR PART AND ADDED SOME FREON. THE AIR NOW WORKS GREAT! I WILL NEVER CALL TOTAL COMFORT AGAIN. I FEEL I PAID $45 FOR NOTHING, BUT A SALES CALL!!
