I wanted a railing installed on my cement front step. When I called to set up the appointment they figured it would take less than 3 hours. The guy stopped over to take a look and he said 8 hours. I informed him, I would be buying the railing. I asked for a detailed estimate, cost per hour, etc. All I got was a paper that the cost beyond the coupon would be another $1,200. I told them that was outrageous. When I e-mailed them back, it was like they were vague and making excuses. It also seemed like they did not want to install the railing as they told me I could get my refund back from Angies List.
Description of Work: I purchased a Big Deal from Handy Rite.

I'm sorry you were not happy with your estimate. Please understand that it is tough for me to give a price over the phone site unseen. This is why we set up a time for Ben to come and see the project. The project was much more involved than what we discussed on the phone. You asked Ben for an estimate that included labor and materials but were very vague on the type of railing you wanted. Because of this, Ben had to give you a range since the type of railing you decide on greatly influences the material AND labor costs. There is no way we can give an exact bid without knowing the type of railing you want. We tried to explain all this to you and could tell you were still unhappy. We did not want you to feel pressured to use our services so we explained the Big Deal return process to you. Thank you for considering us and we wish you the best with your project.

Ben is very professional. He did anexcellent job on everything we had him do. Very satisfied with this service provider.
Description of Work: We originally had two exterior door thresholds replaced and painted as well as replacing the drawer runners on 8 kitchen drawers. We then had Ben come back and paint two exterior metal doors inside and out and the exterior garage entry door and all door frames to match our soffit/fascia trim.

I had a list of projects that he could work on during his three hours here, not knowing how many he would have time to get through. He started with the sliding door, which took most of the time. He did a great job with that. Then he told me he wasn't able to do any of the other jobs on the list for various reasons. Since there was still a half hour left in the time I paid for, I asked him to change the light bulbs in the chandelier of our front entry. He put in three new bulbs, and it wasn't until he left that I realized only one was lit. I'm wondering if he noticed that?
Description of Work: He fixed the sliding door to our deck and changed some light bulbs.

I am sorry you are not completely satisfied with Handy Rite. The Big Deal states that customer’s must provide all materials. You did not have the materials for Ben to use so he did need to leave to go purchase them. We understand that many times it is impossible for Ben or the customer to know exactly what will be needed until he starts working. Unfortunately, in this situation, we need to charge you for this time as it is for your job. We never up charge on our materials and we would never charge a customer for materials that were not used! Ben used all 3 items that were purchased as you will see when I e-mail a copy of the receipt. Every customer is welcome to see the receipts please just ask Ben. Please understand that there are going to be some repairs that Ben just can’t handle. He had never worked on a Central Vac system before and recommended you call someone that specializes in that area. He was not able to replace the other patio door handle that day because it needed to be special ordered from the door manufacturer. There are just so many things he can fully complete in 3 hours. I am sorry about the light bulbs not working. Ben states that they were working as he was replacing the trim on the front door because he needed to stop and replace those lights in order to see the trim work. I wished you would have called us as soon as you noticed there was a problem. Unless you communicate these concerns with us, we are not able to help. Ben is the type of contractor that would have been back immediately to correct the issue. If you have any further questions or concerns please feel free to give us a call. Thank you, Staci Skowronek Handy Rite 763-360-2271

Had to wait awhile for a work day due to the Angie's coupon/my schedule. Contractor was on time. Worked very efficiently doing good quality work. Had better ideas than I did. Offered solutions to problems I did not even know were there.
Description of Work: My back entry needed some updating after replacing a door. Contractor offered better (and more cost effective!) ideas for the walls. Also, he trimmed the doorways to match the trim in the rest of the house.

Went very well. I am assuming it was his wife on the e-mail. She responded back very quickly and timely when I e-mailed and wanted to get something setup. First was an inspection for an estimate, then we picked a day for the actual work. He was very polite and nice. Really listened which was nice so we were able to have conversation about what it was that needed to happen. He pretty much just knocked down a wall, took the wall which was now garbage and hauled it away. And then installed a water filter underneath my kitchen sink. Got everything done quicker than I thought he would. Did an excellent job with cleanup. I didn't have to go in afterwards and clean up more stuff. Only thing I would recommend is to explain how the coupon works, or maybe define more what handy work it should include. It was suppose to be for three hours of handy work. It took him just a little over three hours to complete the project downstairs and water filter. The coupon gave me a significant discount but I still paid more than I thought I would which I am assuming because it was taking out a wall and not just simple handy stuff around the house. I would definitely hire him again and would recommend this company. Was actually one of the nicest and politest home contract workers I have ever worked with.

Initially everything went well. He called us right back to set up a time to come out to give us an estimate. He was planning to come out to give us an estimate on a Saturday but got delayed and called us to reschedule it for the following week. He came out and gave us an estimate for the project that seemed reasonable and told us that he was booked until mid-June. We emailed back and forth a couple of times with questions about the project, and we inquired what date he would be able to do the project. It took him four days to send us a reply which indicated that he had now taken on a large project and was booked until the end of July. We emailed him back and asked if he was interested in doing the job in August if we didn't find anyone else that we wanted to use. He didn't respond until we sent a second email one week later at which time he said that he wasn't interested in doing the project. We were pretty frustrated that he didn't just say that he wasn't interested in the job when he came out to give us an estimate rather than stringing us along for two weeks before finally telling us that.

[member name removed], We are sorry that you are disappointed with our actions. We wish you would have called us to discuss things and given us a chance to explain and make things right before taking your concerns public. We, also, wish we would have had a chance to meet you in person. When Ben went out to your son's house to give an estimate, he was excited about the opportunity to complete the fan installation. He gave an estimate according to what your son, the home owner, requested. The next day we started receiving e-mails from you wondering why Ben didn't look at or discuss more things when he was there for the estimate. You were upset with us at this point. Please understand that our contract to complete services can only be with the actual home owner. We understand you are paying for the repairs but we can only do work on the home with the homeowner’s consent. Your son did not bring up all of your concerns with Ben and, given he is the homeowner, we only discussed and looked at what he choose. We wish you would have been present at the estimate so there would not have been this break in communication. Ben told your son that because of the major mold issues in the bathroom the he recommended the fan be put in as soon as possible especially with a baby in the house. We are just a one man operation – no employees. This time of the year it is not unusual to be booked out 8 weeks at a time for such a small company. Our schedule is changing daily. Just one big deck job and we are booked solid for 4 weeks. Ben explained to your son at the estimate that the schedule fills quickly. Because of the fact that we were booked out so far, we felt it best to politely decline the work. Our hope was you’d find someone that could get the problem taken care of for you sooner instead of waiting for us. Again, we are very sorry for this lack of communication but it is our policy to communicate directly with the homeowner. Again, we are so sorry for any problems we have caused you. As you can see, from our other reviews, we are a company that takes pride in our work and strives to do the best possible for each of our customers. We can only do the best we can with scheduling and it’s has to be on a first come first serve basis. Thank you - Handy Rite

During the bid process I was assured all my projects could be completed in the 3 hour time. Ben was here 5 hours and all my projects that we originally talked about were not completed. There was some issues with the old faucets. The work completed was excellent. The bidding project time estimates could be more accurate. I will have more done by this business.

Ben was fantastic! I cannot say enough positive things about his work and his professionalism! I purchased a "big deal" coupon here for 3 hours of discounted services. Ben then came to assess the project and give me an estimate for how the additional labor and materials costs. We set up an appointment for him to complete the project a couple of weeks later, due to my busy schedule. When Ben arrived the second time, he dove right into the project and got everything done faster (and therefore cheaper) than his estimate had suggested. The work he did was high quality, and I appreciated that he consulted me on things like where to make a hole in the wall to minimize aesthetic concerns. The thing that impressed me the most, however, was what he did once the work was completed. He was aware that I was on a very tight budget for this project, and I had asked him to leave some things for me to finish up in order to save on labor costs. He told me that he always cleans up after himself, but he gave me the option of leaving things as they were to save me a few bucks. I chose the cheap option, and he repeated that he felt bad leaving a mess, but would do so only because I had asked. At that point I had to run to a meeting, and I paid my bill and left him to finish packing up. Imagine my surprise when I came home to a tidy home! He had done the clean up after all, and on his own time without charging me a dime. I feel a bit guilty about his staying late to save me time/money, but WOW what customer service! I really could not have been more impressed with this experience. I would absolutely and without the slightest hesitation recommend Handy Rite.
Description of Work: I had converted a bathtub into a bath+shower, and now needed a bathroom exhaust fan installed. This project involved cutting the fan assembly into the plaster ceiling, adding duct work in the attic crawl space, venting it through the side of the house, and running electrical wires.

I purchased a big deal from Angie's list, and then called Handy Rite. They set up a time about 2 weeks later. They called a few days before the scheduled date, and asked if I would like them to start in the morning, instead of the afternoon. That was fine with me. The handy man arrived about 10 minutes early, and I explained what I wanted done, and he brought in his tools, and put down a drop cloth. My Angie's list Big Deal was for 3 hours, and he said he thought it would take a little more time, and gave me an hourly rate. He went right to work, and finished about 4 hours later. He installed the tile, grouted and cleaned up. He supplied his own wall mastic, but didn't charge me for that. Everything looks really nice, and I couldn't be happier.

Within minutes of purchasing this Angie's List Big Deal, I received an email asking to arrange a time for Ben to come and see our handyman list. He came when he said he would. He repaired three light fixtures we asked about. We also asked about some caulk work in the bathroom and hooking up a wall heater in our bathroom. The heater we purchased didn't fit well so Ben offered to come back and install the heater once we found a good fit.
