We were very pleased with the painting of the doors. It was done very well and quickly. The weatherstripping was a different story. Estimator thought it would be no problem to correct the weatherstripping and seal a steel door that was installed incorrectly by another vendor. The serviceman that came out was different than the estimator and had a hard time sealing up the door as needed. He was not able to adjust the door as the estimator indicated on the work order. Therefore our air leak problem was not resolved.
Description of Work: Had some exterior doors painted inside and out and had one doors weatherstripping repaired.

I originally had 4 items that I wanted to be fixed but my house is over 100 years old so there are always some surprises with things that would appear to be pretty straightforward. Dan was very helpful and efficient, especially with the items that he wasn't able to fix that day because they turned out to require a bit more effort such as the light fixture I wanted to hang will require some electrical work simply because whoever installed the current light did shortcuts - even I could tell it was a hazard waiting to happen once he removed the fixture. He was kind enough to walk me through what would need to happen to fix the outstanding two items and even put together an estimate which he emailed to Mike (owner) so that when I called a few days later, Mike had all the information and we were able to schedule another appointment to get the light fixture taken care of. Great people! Definitely recommend and clearly, will use them in the future.

Mike was really nice. He was quick to respond initially and set up a visit for someone to look at the damage within a week or so. The gentleman who came out was very polite and professional. He told me they would get back to me with an estimate shortly. About 2 weeks later I had to call to find out when I might get my estimate. It was emailed to me very shortly thereafter. This can happen to anyone. Their price was in line with the other estimates I received and was given an estimate of $108.00. We set up a time about a week or two later, and they were very prompt. However, Pat came in to do the work (scrape and apply the drywall mud) and then left while it dried. That was fine, but when he returned, he saw a side of the beam he forgot. Applied more drywall mud and left again while it dried. I looked at the area when he was about to leave and it still looked wet. It was a little bumpy, but I figured that since it wasn't dry, I could sand it myself later. After all, it had taken most of the day already and I was ready for him to leave. When I went to pay him, he charged my $184.00, not the $108.00 that was on the estimate. There was a charge for Materials and Handling of $35.00. There was also a $40.00 service charge. I paid and he left. However, now that I have had time to let this settle, it makes me a little mad. He didn't use anywhere near $35.00 worth of mud. If I had supplied the materials, I would not have cost me that much!! I also went back and looked, and didn't see where he would charge a $40.00 service charge. Perhaps I missed that piece of information somewhere. But beware of that service charge and of any "materials and handling." To top it off, when I hired someone to paint my ceiling and kitchen last week, he ended up having to fix the work done by Handyman Matters. He had to add more mud and then sand it all down. Luckily, he did not charge me extra.
Description of Work: Repaired an area of drywall damage in our kitchen due to a previous roof leak. The area was about 1 foot down the wall and 3 feet across a drywall-covered beam on the ceiling.

[Member Name], yes there was a delay in getting back to you but we have been swamped with work this summer are are just trying to fit everyone as quickly as possible but I do take issue with your comments about our charges. Here is the exact quote I gave you in an email dated 7/31/2014. ************************************************************************************** [Member Name], Pat estimated the following costs: Repair kitchen header wall - Labor: $109.00 Materials: $35.00 Painting - $109.00 for labor and you would supply the paint There is a one time travel fee of $40.00 whether we do one or both jobs. Thanks for the inquiry and call me if you would like to get this scheduled or have any questions. ************************************************************************************************************* You decided you only wanted us to paint and the charges that Pat applied were exactly in line with what we had quoted including the material costs and travel charge so I do not understand how you can say you were not aware of what all the costs would be and that we apply "hidden charges".

Chris was super helpful, did a great job with the repairs, and we really appreciated the advice! The price was very reasonable- significantly less than the quote I received from a different Angie's List service provider. We would definitely use Handyman Matters services again!
Description of Work: Chris sealed a leak in our unfinished basement, then replaced the insulation, and also repaired a piece of soffit that had blown loose on the roof. He offered some advice on how to fix the water leak problem long term (fixing landscaping so water drains away) and gave some advice on an unrelated flooring project we are working on.

My neighbor used Handyman Matters Twin Cities for the same job. I had asked for their business card when I saw the work being done next door. After checking Angies List, I called the company and spoke with Mike. He applied the senior discount, and the estimate was the exact cost of service. Craig did the job perfectly. He was pleasant, reliable, and I would absolutely hire him again.

Quick response from owner, fast scheduling, arrived on time. I didn't ask for a job time estimate up front as regardless the work had to get done to list my house, but the job ended up being much larger than anticipated. The person who did the work wasn't happy that there wasn't enough time provided and required coming back a second day. Work itself is quality and looks nice. Would likely try again, just make sure I am clear on the job, ask for an estimate, and request a different handyman.

Maybe our job fell between regular handymen and siding companies but we had a hard time finding someone to take it on and who was available before fall. The quality of the work seems good, but I wasn't happy with the price though I didn't get other bids to compare it to. We're getting our house ready to sell so we didn't feel like we had a lot of choice about getting this done. The irritating things were they weren't very responsive via phone to get the estimate set up, answer questions about various options (we were originally going to have other odd jobs included until we saw the price), and then to set up when they'd come. They came when we were out of town so I'm not sure about punctuality. Our neighbor reported that the workers used our neighbors' outside outlet (without asking) even though two different workers called us about where ours was located (and we explained to each). It is not at all difficult to find--we wondered if they didn't bring a long enough extension cord?! Not cool. They also left behind a large trash bag of cut shakes and tar paper and other trash and when we called about it said they'd charge us to pick it up! Ugh!

So our price was too high but you never compared us to anyone else and we were actually willing to come out and do a small job like this....not sure how you justify that comment.. We did bid on 3 different projects for you and revised them twice when you changed your mind. We had to come out a second time to look at the job to estimate materials because of that but never charged you for this trip. We had the wettest June in the history of the Twin Cities so we had to re-schedule this outside work 3 times. Sorry you were on vacation when we finally got a dry spell but you said you were in a rush to get it done so you could get the house on the market. During the project while we were using your power outlet my craftsman's compressor stopped working. He thought he may have tripped a circuit breaker in your house so he went next door to ask your neighbor if he could use their outlet. They were not home but he did plug his extension in only to find out that it was a compressor problem not the power line so he disconnected from their house and used yours again. When the neighbors came home later he talked to them and explained what he did . They had no issue with this since he never really used any power. We have to pay to get rid of construction debris and most customers with only a single bag of trash opt to take care of it themselves rather than pay an extra fee for our time to get rid of it and the disposal site fees. I did offer to do this for you but you decided to do it yourself.

I contacted this company mid June for an appointment to frame my basement. The owner or person picking up the phone proceeded to say they could do much more. I said that would be fine if they wanted to provide a bid for framing and for more and we discussed in length the project. He then said his computer was not working, wrote down all my information, and promised a follow up call to set up an appointment once the computer was up and running. A week later I call back and same guy sort of remembers the conversation but sees no appointment. He says he recently had to let go of a worker that was supposed to call me back and he's now behind, apologized. I can understand that, so I just said, well let's get it scheduled now. So at this point he's now short staffed and fully booked and is struggling to figure out how to get me on the schedule but he does for the next day. The employee comes out to the house the next day and brings no paper and no measuring tape. We go to the basement, he looks around, asks questions. He pushes back on doing anything other than framing despite the earlier conversation I had with the owner. I don't know how he determines what to estimate given he has nothing to use for dimensions. I provided a written drawing with my own dimensions for him to look at and take with him but I could have easily done that via email. He leaves and I haven't heard from this company since that time.
Description of Work: Unfortunately, they did not do anything except waste both of our time.

We were not very happy with them, because they were supposed to call us, and set up an appointment, but what they did, is that they called my husband, and said that they were at the house. My husband is a dentist, and he just can't leave his patients and walk out. We were really not happy about that. They told us to buy some supplies for door trim, and then they didn't use them. They were supposed to call us with a time for us to be here, and they never did that, they just showed up and called us up at work. The owner came by to talk to me on a Saturday, and he was very good. They did not finish the work they said they were going to do, and were not happy with the work that they did on our trim.
Description of Work: We used Handyman Matters Twin Cities. They came to replace the trim on our garage, they installed a door in our laundry room, except that I stained it, and they put some shutters on the outside of our house. That was very good.

It was a big deal which is $299 for 4 hours of labor. They were very prompt. They contacted me right away and asked for a list of what needed to be done. The guy who was there was very polite, he certainly cleaned up after himself. He made every effort to get everything done that he could and he was timely in getting everything done properly. He didn't rush to get something done and not do it correctly which I value. Fixing the thermostat for my air conditioning was a pain because neither of us don't have the proper sized tool so he really made an effort to get it done without screening around too long and he fixed it. He was early when he came.
Description of Work: He did drywall patches, he hang a medicine cabinet, he hang a towel bar, he fixed three of my doors, he fixed my air conditioning, he weather strips two different doors, hangs up on the laundry room. He attempted to put in a screen door but unfortunately the screen door was a wrong size. He fixed 2 toilets, one was an easy but the one he had to replace all the inerts. He fixed the door plate.

I originally contacted 3 handyman companies on Angie's List for quotes on a set of jobs for my home. All 3 responded promptly and sent someone out to do an estimate within a few days. Craig from Handyman Matters provided an estimate that was in the middle of the 3 in terms of detail, but was the lowest in terms of cost (by $400 in one case and $800 in the other). Since all 3 were highly rated on AL, I felt comfortable going with Handyman Matters. We scheduled the work about two weeks later. I received an e-mail from the company the night before with the time that Craig would arrive. For some reason, it didn't have him starting until 10AM, but I was able to reply to the e-mail and ask for an earlier start so I could be there when he arrived, and we were able to have him start around 7:30AM. The biggest part of the job was expanding a doorway between my living room and kitchen. My home was built in 1916 and has stained oak trim throughout the first floor, so it was important that the new trim blend well with the existing original trim. In addition to the trim around the door frame, there is a step from the living room landing to the kitchen, so widening the doorway also required replacing the riser and tread. Overall, Craig did a nice job with this project, but it wasn't perfect. He didn't drape around the area at all, which meant that every surface on our first floor was covered with a thick layer of dust from the wood and drywall. In addition, he originally installed the trim in a way that did not tie in well with the existing trim. When I pointed this out to him, he was able to adjust and make it work, but it made me nervous that I had to point out the issue. Lastly, he did a nice job matching the stain on the trim around the doorway, but the stair tread and riser stand out from the rest. Matching stain is always a bit of a hit-or-miss proposition, and when I emailed Mike (the company owner), he said that Craig would come back out to sand down the poly and re-stain. That hasn't happened yet, but I feel more confident knowing that the company stands behind their work to get it to an acceptable condition. The other parts of the job went well. He removed the caulking around the kitchen sink that had become moldy and re-caulked. He patched a section of our sunroom ceiling that had been damaged by water and repainted the ceiling -- looks good as new. And he adjusted our storm doors that had always been sticky and got them to work much more smoothly. All in all, I would go with Handyman Matters again, as I believe they do good work at a fair price, but would definitely set expectations up front about cleanliness and attention to detail.

I used this company last year and was very happy with the results so I called them again this year. I had a list of small things that needed repair, electrical, plumbing, sheetrock that took an hour one day. Michael came and did those things and then gave me an estimate for the deck maintenance and repair, which I approved. I needed to get my insurance company approval for the deck staining as it was needed due to a hail storm and they approved the estimate. Due to our wet, cold weather, Michael came back 4 weeks later to work on the deck repair and then the prep work before painting/staining. I also had discovered some wood p***** damage to my 3 season porch and asked for that repair to be done also. He finished all that on 5/12 and came back on 5/13 to do the painting and staining. He painted the deck rail, touched up some of the spindles, then stained the deck floor. He painted over the woodpecker damage, touched up a window sill and then painted around my 2 garage as there was a small strip that was left bare after the installation. I used the Angie's list coupon of $50.00 off $250 of labor too. I have recommended this company to others and will continue to use them as I build up my next list of to-dos on my home.

I have a wonderful 2 unit duplex right in the heart of Uptown Mpls. I wanted to build a charming portico (overhang roof) over the front exterior entrance door of one of the units. It was imperative that it complement the other exterior entrance door portico to the other apartment as well as the overall architectural style of the building. The building has a bit of an Arts & Crafts influence. The second job was to erect a quality privacy fence along the North rear side of the property. I actually wanted it to match my neighbors fence which is on the South side of the property. It turned out perfect! I live in another city on the West Coast and I needed a company that I could trust to get the job done right, submit a fair bid, and keep me informed every step of the way. I know this sounds strange, but it's almost as though some companies 'think' that because you are not a 'local owner' and you are not on site, (and a woman), they can jack up the price and you'll just go along with it. HandymanMatters Mike Sitek was one of 3 bids and I am so thrilled that I gave them the job. Keep in mind that I have only met Mike over the phone and via email! I also trusted his REVIEWS. The work was completed, weather permitting, in a very expeditious manner. I received terrific digital photos and updates during the course of the job. (We will have to wait 'til spring to paint the flashing because the weather temp got too cold.) My south side neighbor said, "it looks like the entrance door roof has been there since the duplex was built!) I will use Mike (HandymanMatters) for a number of jobs coming up next spring because I know I'll get a fair price and because I can count on them for beautiful, quality job!

I encountered the company at a remodeling show. About 8 months later I called about getting my two gates adjusted. I received a return call promptly and Mike came out to fix my gates within 2 days. I was very impressed by this because there are some companies that do not want small jobs. While Mike was there fixing my gates I asked him to look at my unfinished retaining walls which needed cap block. Mike sent someone out to give me an estimate and date to complete the work. The work was done on the date agreed upon and the yard was cleaned up nicely when the walls were complete. There were two small issues - nothing that should affect anyone choosing this company. I will mention the issues to the owner when using them for future projects. This company is very prompt. No lag time between calling them and the completion of the work. And the quality of the work is excellent!
Description of Work: The company adjusted two gates on my chain link fence. I also had them add finishing caps to two retaining walls.

Response from Ace Handyman Services Twin Cities
Thanks for the great review [Member name removed]. Your landscaping design and stonework looks great so we were glad to be able to help put on the finishing touches and get those gates in order. Please call again any time and thanks again for the business and the very positive review.

Mark was very responsive and helped get us scheduled quickly so the door could be replaced before a planned vacation out of town. The carpenter showed up on time, did a great job, consulted me when necessary (regarding door hardware, placement, etc.) and even routered the hole for the new deadbolt we would need so we wouldn't have to do it later. Great experience, we will definitely use Handyman Matters again for other jobs around our house.
Description of Work: We hired Handyman Matters to replace an existing exterior door.
