The Macbook Pro crashed two weeks before my daughter completed her junior year of college in Spain. Not trusting the tech company in Seville, she waited to return home where she could bring it to the Apple Store in Rosedale, where it had been purchased shortly before her trip abroad. Apple determined that there had been no misuse, abuse or damage that may have caused the hard drive to crash.The original hard drive was still under warranty, so would be replaced free of charge, but we would not be able to keep it and retrieve data at a later time-- it would be sent back to Apple. Because many of her photos were stored only on the laptop, before they replaced it, he said she could take it to Kroll Ontrack to have her data files retrieved. The Apple tech thought the price of retrieval began at around $400-$500. We contacted Kroll Ontrack and were told that data retrieval actually began at $700 and went up from there. We encouraged her to take it to Kroll to determine if her pictures could in fact be retrieved. They had it for about a week and told us they ha d retrieved about 1/3 of the files so far. Our daughter decided that she would try to get copies of photos from classmates who had also been in Spain. She got her laptop from Kroll at no charge, but also no data in hand. She was able to convince the Apple store to let her keep the original hard drive so she could get data retrieved later. The new hard drive crashed within two weeks of being installed, but after learning the hard way, she had purchased a back-up hard drive, and is a and quot;back-it-upand quot; believer. Even though, at our request, they didn't complete the retrieval process, we felt that although spendy for our purposes, they were very good professionally, and if you needed files for a business retrieved, it would probably be worth it.

They recovered data from a smashed jump drive for a $65.00 diagnostic fee. If I want the data back, I will need to pay $600.00. As a public school teacher, I cannot afford that.
