He came on time, knew what he was doing, dit it efficiently and safely, and checked his work. He took the time to explain what he did and answered my questions with courtesy and respect. He also gave me a bid on a solution to my desire to hook my generator to house circuits without using extension cords. He did not recommend it, explained why he thought so, and I agreed.
Description of Work: I had several surge arrests within my house, along with three uninterruptable power supplies to protect my computer, network and TV/DVR equipment. I also have a gasoline-powered portable electricity generator for power outages. I was looking for surge protection for my entire house. Gunner Electric installed a surge arrest that protected both phases of eloectrical power to my main electrical panel. Now, all electrical appliances within my house have protection. That includes the home alarm system, my kitchen appliances (electric stove, dishwasher, coffee maker), radios, TV receivers, sound system, wireless meter reader, laundry machine electronics, furnace controls, air conditioning thermostats, and even garage door openers. It also protects battery chargers to things like iPads and cell phones during recharge operations. I still use the uninterruptable power supplies because they add battery backup power and voltage regulation for critical electronic equipment. However, surge arrests are now unnecessary. Few people realize how much of what we use depends upon reliable electrical power. Even light bulbs and dimmer switches can be damaged or burned out by surges. If an electrical appliance malfunctions or burns out, it can generate a momentary surge within the house. The whole-house surge arrest even stops that surge from propogating through other circuits within the home. I highly recommend that all homeowners install whole-house surge arrests. The local power company cannot protect every home from the power anomalies brought on by mother nature or what we do to each other. I could talk about lightning protection (SLRs), sags and power factor anomalies that would make a home owner's eyes glaze over, but that is out of scope of this review. The surge arrest Gunner Electric installed will not protect against these problems. However, Gunner Electric can install SLRs and other stuff if the homeowner wants it done.

He was able to do a couple things but there were some he couldn't do. I ended up not having enough work for him to cover the entire 2 hours. But, what he was able to do went fine. I just didn't feel like he explained why he couldn't do some projects very well or that he was even that interested in doing them.

He did a good job installing the new outlets and since he had a little extra time he also switched the outlets that would be near the sink to the appropriate type. Switching the existing outlets wasn't something I would have thought about until after the sink was installed so I was glad for the suggestion. This was an Angie's List Deal so I was very pleased with the extra service at a discounted price.

The technician was very pleasant, prompt and respectful of our home. I had no trouble making the appointment . My impression of the electrician was that he took pride in his work .I would definitely use him again.
Description of Work: Service was excellent . Technician installed a new light fixture in dining room. He also checked several light switches that I was worried about and reassured us that they were functioning properly. He also fixed another light fixture which had fallen partially down because of prior incorrect installation by another company.

I purchased an Angie's List Deal from this company. Unfortunately, I let the expiration slide by. I tried to call to negotiate something (anything) for the money I paid. Sadly, they won't return my calls to discuss. This unprofessional behavior is unacceptable. Oh well. There are plenty of other professional electricians who want work.

The electrician came and started the work early in the morning so that I could leave him to finish the work so I could attend a meeting I had scheduled. He finished the work and left me an invoice for the extra work, trusting me to pay it. The whole process went smoothly.
Description of Work: The electrician used the coupon and only charged extra for the extra time the work took which was a minimal amount. The job was moving the wires for a canister light in one part of our ceiling to another where I wanted to install a mini-pendant.

We were suprised to find that this was the problem outside of the atic and only related to a cable having been disturbed in the attic during the the insulation project.
Description of Work: We suffered a electrical short in our service following new attic insulation upgrade. Gunnar electric was contacted to locate the problem. They evaluated the service box, the extensive wire service in the atic and located the problem in a ceilig box in the hall of the 2nd floor outside of the atic that had a light fixture that was poorly instaled .

I used them through the Angie's Deal. He was really fast and thorough. He knew what he was doing. He just was very efficient. He was up in the attic looking for issues, and he did a lot of thorough checking and paid a lot of attention to what he was doing.
Description of Work: I have used Gunnar Electric for electrical services. He fixed a four-way switch that had never been properly installed since the house was built. He also replaced a DFI switch, and in the process of figuring that out, he found two outlets that were actually starting to fry inside the wall, and replaced those.

I purchased a coupon through Angies List for Two hours if electrical work. Installer arrived within time frame given. I explained everything I wanted done. He was unable to change chandelier in dining room because one of the rods was defective. He moved switch in bedroom, and then started recessed lighting. He advised me that the part in the tool that cuts into the sheet rock to make the opening for the light can loosened and hole drilled was too big. I had to go back to home depot and return the lights I wanted installed and buy larger ones while he waited at my house. He was at my home approx 3 hours and quoted me 332.00 I asked why since I had purchased two hours and he told me that it took him 2 hours to get to my house which was the trip charge. I don't remember seeing anything that advised of trip charge when I purchased coupon. After all was said and done, he forgot his folder which had the check I gave him for the work done. He didn't call or come back. I called the number listed on the invoice and left message. This was a Friday and I didn't receive a call back until Monday. Although he did an o.k. job, he left a thin slit on the wall where he moved the outlet. It is minor, but will have to be fixed. I did not notice until after he left. I will not use Gunnar again as I feel the trip charge was really high. In reality, the 2 hours I purchased only covered trip charge.

I had put up with horrible track lighting in my kitchen for years. Finally decided to add can lights but wasn't sure how it would work, or how many I could afford on my budget. Dolf from Gunnar Electric came to my rescue! He listened to my concerns, and suggested a much better plan than I could have. And he was able to install 6 lights for me, when I thought I could only do 3. Dolf was knowledgeable, considerate and innovative. If you need a personal lighting expert -- ask for him! LOVE my new lights!! Doing a happy dance.

Dolf was on time and courteous. He's got a sense of humor, and we got along great. I think he could tell that I was interested in what he was doing, so he took the time to explain what he was doing and why. First, I had him look at a light fixture that had sparked at my husband and left a black burn spot on the ceiling (scary!). He took it down and explained that there was no saving the fixture - that I'd have to pay quite a lot just to get it in shape to be replaced. It's certainly an antique, but it wasn't super unique looking, so I told him to make it so that I could at least put a bulb up there. He updated the plate/wiring (not sure what that's called), so that it was really easy to install a new one once we were ready. Then, I showed him around the house where all of the outlets were 2-prong, and he replace them with grounded, 3-prong outlets. Again, when I asked questions, he gave me very detailed answers and was a lot of fun to talk to. Lastly, we went through the basement. The house was built in 1919, and some of the wiring has been updated - some hasn't. We walked through the different areas of the basement, and he showed me the older stuff and explained its limitations. We looked at the newer stuff - just fine. He decommissioned an outlet on a wall I've since demolished completely. After all was said and done, I owned an additional $14 for parts. I learned a lot and would definitely recommend using Gunnar Electric - especially Dolf - for an electrician.
Description of Work: I had pre-paid for 2 hours of an electrician's time through Angies List's Big Deals. I only gave a "B" for responsiveness because the Big Deal flooded Gunnar with requests, and I didn't hear anything for about a week after I had already been charged. Dolf was awesome - he did several odd jobs I had been meaning to get done around my house. The house was built in 1919 and had been semi-updated in the 1970s, and there were several things my husband and I had been wanting to get checked out/updated. Services: - converting and grounding 2-prong plugs into 3-prong plugs - inspection of strange wiring configurations in the basement - decommissioning some outlets on walls we wanted to demolish - fixing a light fixture that had sparked and literally 'burnt out'

We are very sorry that the customer is unhappy with our service. We had returned his phone calls but were unable to comply with his request for an extra visit under the same "Big Deal". We offered to install the other outlet at our regular rates. He chose not to do that. Unfortunately we are not able to control every person's experience. We certainly attempt to create a great service.

Before I purchased the $119 for Two Hours of Electrical Work (Angie's List Deal) from Gunnar Electric, I called to get an estimate for the work. I talked directly with an estimator and she thought the job would take about two hours. I purchased the deal and called to make an appointment. I specifically asked to have an appointment on the same day that the electrician would already be in our area (to avoid "travel charges"). When the electrician arrived, the first thing he told us was that he had already used 30 minutes of our 2 hour block of time driving to our house. He worked for 1 hour and 10 minutes and completed the wiring of the two electrical boxes (but did not install the light fixtures). However, I don't think we'll use this company again because the electrician repeatedly complained about the "deal" we received, the fact that he left our kids rooms in an absolute mess (not putting plastic down to catch the mess when he drilled the holes in the ceiling), and because I feel we were shortchanged on the 2 hours of time we purchased.

Gunnar Electric Inc takes prides in our customer service. The overwhelming response to the Big Deal coupon took us by storm. We did our best to give everyone an idea of the time required to do their particular job. We had one electrician in house specifically to answer the type of questions asked. Obviously the member's phone call was missed and we apologize. We attempt to return all phone calls promptly and will certainly contact the member to answer her questions.

I called Gunnar Electric Monday morning, December 20 asking for someone to replace an existing ceiling fan/light in the loft (granddaughter's playroom) of our townhouse. I knew it was close to Christmas but I hoped they would be able to send someone out within a week or two. I spoke with Faye who was extremely nice. She told me she would check the schedule and have someone call me. Shortly thereafter, Terry called me and said he could be here around 2:00 pm that same day!! Even though it was snowing and the roads were messy, Terry arrived on time and quickly set up his ladder and went to work. He was very nice and completed the task promptly. My granddaughter was very happy that evening and I would definitely use Gunnar Electric again.

It was approx 30 minutes after the window of time given, so i called to make sure i had scheduled the right day. It was confirmed yes, and I was told that the electrician was probably held up at the previous job. It was not a big deal, as i was home all day so as long as they would perform the work that day, i didn't care. The electrician arrived about 1.5 hours later than the window of time, but was very courteous and professional. I took about 5 minutes to explain what we wanted, and he quickly got to work. To my surprise, the work was completed in a little more than 1 hour. I had gotten an estimate over the phone and was told it would be approx $400 per light, and would probably take 1/2 a day or so, so the final bill came in at about 1/3 of the estimate. I elected to do my own cleanup, and also I'm going to do the final installation of the light myself, so I think this saved some time, but I was still really surprised at how fast it was completed. There was very little mess left also, and it only took me about 10 minutes to clean up afterwards. It would have been very easy for someone to take 2 or 3x the time to do the same job, charge me 2 or 3x as much, and i wouldn't have known the difference. I could not be happier with the way the work was performed, and the professionalism of the electrician that did the work. I plan to use Gunnar electric in the future for anything else i need.
Description of Work: We have 2 bedrooms upstairs that have no lights in the ceiling, but rather have outlet(s) connected to the wall switch to control lamps in the room. Thank You for allowing us to do your electrical work. Our typical window of time usually works quite well. If the customer adds extra work, the electrician is to stay and finish the project. Dolph came out to my house. It's not clear to me how to rate his electrical work, as I'm not certain what an inspection was supposed to look like. I was displeased with his careless and unprofessional activities. His carelessness and unprofessional behaviour was in that he put his tool box on the kitchen countertop (I asked him to remove it), he put his screw drivers on the countertop, he put his clip board with a metal protrusion on the countertop, he leaned against walls, walked on the carpet with his shoes after I asked him not to, he sat at the dining room table, he sat in a chair in the master bedroom, and he pressed his belt againt my sleigh bed and bent over with his full weight on it to access an outlet. I later discovered that there was scratches on the surface of the bed where he had pressed against it. I decided to call the company instead of just posting a bad review. I got a call from the service manager who expressed disbelief in my story. Then I received a call from the owner who wanted to see it. She arrived at my house with Dolph, even though on the phone she spoke only of herself coming to my residence. She insisted that I allow him to enter because he says that he never touched the bed. I asked him if he would change his story upon seeing the bedroom: he replied "No, I will never say that I touched the bed." I pointed out that he was wearing a different belt than the day that he came to my house. He replied that he owns no other belts. He grew angry and was yelling at me. I am not sure if his presense was meant to intimidate me. I allowed the owner access to my house. I asked her to remove her shoes, but she refused and did not put shoe covers on. She walked around the master bedroom in her shoes touching my bed all over. She pointed out other, minor scratches on the bed and claimed that they were similar to the ones created by Dolph. She then made a comment that basically translates to calling me a liar. She also commented that she doesn't have to make restitution as it cannot be proved that Dolph created the scratches. It is true that I did not take before photos. I didn't think that would be necessary. Why would a contractor touch my bed? A furniture repair man is coming to the house to repair the bed. His phone estimate is $75. I have decided that I am not interested in having further contact with this company, as each of my experiences has been very distressing. They have wasted hours of my time, which is more valuable than $75, have disrespected my property, and have disrepected me.

Customer requested we do an electrical inspection for a possible sale. Never said anything about former homeowners doing the work. She had a handiman doing her kitchen remodel and installing the electrical outlets while our electrician was on the premises. She requested he remove his shoes which he did instead of using the shoe booties he has in the truck. She showed him the bedroom where he checked the outlets on the wall side of the room because the bed was on the other side. He noticed the bed, patted the footboard commenting "Nice Bed." That was his only contact with the bed. Fast forward to Friday when she called claiming he had scratched the bed. Our service manager told her he would come the following Friday since he was booked the rest of the day and would be gone the next week on vacation. On Monday I thought about the phone call and Dolf's comments. I contacted customer suggesting I come on Tuesday to inspect the damage. That was ok so on Tuesday since Dolf had downtime I asked him to come along to see what he had done to the bed. He did so and when we got to the home she refused to allow him to enter the house. He returned to my car and I went into the house after she had inspected my shoes. I cannot go barefoot and she was ok with the type of soft soled sandals I wore. We checked out the bed. The marks were not scratches but rather marks from something white. Scratches are very noticeable on dark wood and these were raised not indented. I asked if I could touch the bed. I again requested Dolf have the opportunity to come in to ascertain this is what he had done. She seemed ok with that so we went out, called Dolf to come up stairs and into the house. When he got to the door she again said "no don't come in." I then asked if I could go back and take pictures of the damage. I walked around the bed- not touching anything but noticed that on the head board were identical markings. I called this to her attention suggesting it was maybe from the painting coverups since she was obviously remodeling. She denied any painting but agreed that he hadn't been at the head of the bed and that the marks were the same. I thought we agreed that Dolf had not scratched the bed and it was a misunderstanding. Now I am being accused of lying and being extremely careless in her home. This is untrue. I attempted to show her that my electrician had not scratched her bed and she agreed with me. There is very obviously a misunderstanding here since I told her I would call her on Monday to see what the wood technician said and if we were at fault I would be happy to make reparations. SInce my service manager was out of town I emailed him that I had taken care of the problem. Unfortunately he didn't receive the email; no one realized this and he went to her house on Friday as he had scheduled. Of course she wasn't there and upon him calling her she informed him that I had been there and yelled at her and had walked in her house with my shoes on. This has turned into a huge mess which is totally unfounded. She was told our fee of $135 for a service call with a truck. Our electrician did the work she asked and despite the construction was at her home within 15 minutes of the approximate time. We do not schedule firm times for the electricians because we never know about traffic and road construction. When informed about the complaint we acted on it quickly and thought it was resolved. This F is a very unfair grade. With 40+ years of service we realize not every job is perfect and not every electrician is perfect. We can only try our best which is why we have such a good reputation. We are sorry this customer is unhappy but evidently she doesn't believe our efforts nor our good faith.

I talked with the owner of the business and was so pleased with our conversation that I did not look at other vendors. The price seemed reasonable, so I didn't worry. A while later, after our special order chandelier arrived, I called back. The owner seemed to remember the conversation and many of the details (about two months had passed in between). I reiterated what needed to be done and the owner got enough details and made suggestions to ensure a smooth job. For example, she suggested buying a new doorbell (at a place where we could return it) in case the doorbell had failed. The next day, Tuesday, I was called by the scheduler and scheduled the visit for Friday. Information I did not have the day before was then conveyed. The electrician arrived within the scheduled window. He was very good with my three and five year old while they chose to watch and ensured they were out of harms way (in case the chandelier fell, etc). He was good about measuring and making sure I was happy with the height of the chandelier. He was also very quick at diagnosing and correcting the problem with the doorbell. He made sure we put down towels to ensure our cream carpet did not get dirty and while he did not come in with a vacuum, he did a nice job of cleaning up.
Description of Work: Assembled and installed chandelier and fixed problem with doorbell.
