Services we don't offer
As a stand alone service we will NOT accommodate SOD and/or DRAINAGE requests. These are integral parts of most of our projects but we WILL NOT come out to evaluate these if they are the project.
The experience was great. First of all, B&B was the only firm, of the 7 I contacted and took bids from, that said that installing drain tile that would move the water out to the street was the only way to permanently solve the problem. The problem was basement flooding and all the others wanted to move earth around in the back yard. The explanation was clear and made sense to me. The pricing was completely competitive.
Description of Work: Beds & Borders installed drain tile outdoors, built a small patio, shored up another area that was creating moisture in the basement, and installed sod over the work area, plus over an area where a stump was removed.

Andy and his team were remarkable. He knew how much we wanted to spend and he designed a wonderful landscape to meet that need. He made several designs for us to choose from. It was important to me that we had no "deer friendly" plants! His knowledge of various trees, bushes and flowers was amazing. He spent a lot of time with my husband and myself until we decided on the right plan for us. We had to wait several months for him to get started but it was well worth it. The wait was only because of how many customers he already had. We had a couple of new bushes that didn't make it through the transition and he replaced them for us. We had an unfortunate situation that happened when our lawn mowing company did our fall clean-up. They actually raked up two yards of our new mulch! It was very distressing. I had made numerous calls to the mowing company to work out some type of refund. I asked Andy to assess the damage and he gave me an approximate cost of replacement to tell the mowing company. They were unwilling to meet my refund request so Andy kindly decided that he would replace the mulch for us next Spring at no extra cost. Obviously we are no longer going to use that mowing company. Andy was very patient with all of my phone calls and e-mails but he made us feel like we were very important to him and he took great care of us.
Description of Work: Beds and Borders completely re-landscaped our entire lawn in July of 2008. They removed all of the rock-beds that we had and all of the old plants and bushes. They also cut down three trees for us. They replaced the rocks with mulch, put a stone edging around the entire area and replanted trees, bushes and flowers. They totally removed all of the old ground cover in our "forest-like" area in the back yard and planted new trees. Because we now had all of these new trees and bushes, we needed to add more sprinklers to our underground lawn sprinkler system. We were introduced to an excellent company who was able to meet those needs. Beds and Borders also provided us with a professional gardener who came out several times to assess the new landscape. The main re-landscaping work took approximately a week with several additional visits from Andy, the owner, and as previously stated, the gardener.

They were very professional, creative, and did some excellent quality work.
Description of Work: They did a major front and back yard landscaping project for me. They designed and installed all new foundation plants, made a pass through the woods in our back yard and installed a stone creek in the back yard.

If you are a creative person and DIYer with idea what you want your landscape to look like, save your money. Walk around your neighborhood, take pictures of plants that appeal to you and appear to do well, then go with them to a nursery and ask for similar plants.
Description of Work: We did their thumb nail sketch pkg which promises a free-hand sketch with plant list for a do-it-yourself landscape project. Andy came out and spent a couple of hours suggesting ideas for the landscape and the types of plants we might put in. It was excellent help and the project turned out well. Subsequent communications were not as helpful. I sent emails with several questions, but it is not clear that he read them all before answering, and the answers tended to be one-liners. He never provided a sketch and detailed plant list: so many of such and such a plant spaced x inches apart. In some sense a detailed plant list is probably not possible anyway since what we put in depended on what the nursery had available at planting time. For actually choosing appropriate plants, a good sales person at a nursery could provide plant ideas equal to Andy's.

Response from Beds & Borders Landscape Design
The member had created a computer drawing upon my arrival. The design was outstanding and I almost was at the point of wondering why he had called me. I spent several hours detailing out what they should do to save money and left feeling good that my instructions would save them not only that but a significant amount of time. I take great pleasure in consultations and would be more than happy to leave without any monetary compensation if the homeowner was not impressed and said they did not get anything out of it. Andy was a prompt communicator and he and his crew showed up on time, were polite and professional, and got the entire job done in a bit less than a week. Andy was present quite a bit supervising the work and helping at times. They cleaned up at the end of each work day and power-washed the driveway at the end of the job. I highly recommend Beds and Borders.
Description of Work: Andy & his crew designed and landscaped our entire large weed-ridden backyard. In preparation they removed one large tree and several small ones (buckthorn). Weeds, rotting railroad ties, and shabby grass were removed. A long curved Fond du Lac rock retaining wall was put in with four Fond du Lac steps leading to the upper part of the yard. Several large accent stones were placed. Soil was graded and proper drainage installed. They planted several beautiful trees and tons of plants. A fairly large area of new sod was installed. Rock mulch and pine bark mulch was installed. In sum, our entire backyard was transformed into a work of art.

Called Andy, the designer, and he got back to me quickly, came out to see the site. Was up front about costs, listened to our needs and desires. Did a plan within two weeks with a detailed estimate (I was very impressed!), and told me they could start work in about 8 weeks which would have been the beginning of September. I had gotten his name from Angie's List. Called a couple of references which were glowing. Actual work was done much quicker than I thought it would take. It only took about 5 working days total. They were always on time. They had about 4-5 people here working every day. Very courteous, pleasant and CLEAN! The landscaping is imaginative yet low maintenance which was key for us. I consider that we got a very good value for our money considering they built a brick patio with four stone steps leading up to it, completely dug up and turned over a bed that ran the whole side of our property, took out tree stumps, amended the soil and planted 23 good size new trees, 33 shrubs and 53 perennials. They bordered the bed with boulders to continue what was already there and applied landscape fabric. They also ringed another bed with boulders and filled in both with mulch. Also planted perennials between some arborvitae we had along a fence. I like that Andy took the initiative to add some of the perennials to other places in the garden to tie into the new bed. Also, he and Mike, his partner, went on vacation (Labor Day weekend) during the job, but when he got back and didn't like the way certain boulders were placed, he had the guys move them and redo. The guys worked hard and well even when Mike and Andy weren't around. Chris, the foreman, was very pleasant, hard-working and attentive to our needs and comments. They did cut the underground cable in three places because it wasn't marked and Mike had it fixed before the end of the day each time. Also, after they were done and the sprinkler people came out, it was found that water was gushing out of the ground below the new patio. Mike came out that same day (Thursday) to take and look at and talk with the sprinkler guy. He and Eric (the mason) were out Monday morning, removed part of the patio, let the sprinkler people fix the damage, (they ran a new pipe around the patio instead of under it), and fixed the patio. Meantime, Andy offered to come out and hand water the plants over the weekend if we weren't around. Andy and the crew were very attentive to our impressions as the work went along. They changed the configuration of the steps after they had been put in place because they didn't match the grade of the slope. Very flexible when I decided I wanted to change pavers to bricks from the streets of Minneapolis 10 days to two weeks before they started. Gave us a lot of info. about plant maintenance and will be back in the spring to replace anything that dies. I will definitely use them for all my landscaping needs!
Description of Work: Had a buckthorn forest by the side of the house. The buckthorn had been previously cut down. They completely redid landscaping in that area, built a brick patio and installed some stone stairs.

This company designed and planted new landscaping at my home last summer. They returned this spring to check on how the plants were doing, and replaced several that had not survived (at no cost). This was part of their contract, but I was surprised by how promptly they followed through. They visited my home, determined what needed to be done, and planted everything one Friday afternoon when I was at work. What a nice surprise to come home and discover the new green plants! They actually replaced the dead plants with more plants than originally were planted, exceeding my expectations. When I have had questions about the landscaping, Andy has responded very promptly by email. He promised to "take care of me" and he did.

Andy was always prompt & on time, and his communication is great. Andy understood my vision for the yard & he valued my input & questions. Despite major rain, Andy s partners made it happen on schedule. Andy was on vacation, but he did an excellent job of conveying the details of the project to his partners. There were a couple of items I had to bring to Andy s attention (boulders left in front of my garage, plants missing) but once brought to Andy s attention, they were quick to respond and remedy the issue. Extra or last-minute requests were honored (at no extra charge) such as a stump and railing removal. They didn t skimp on details. Andy continued to stop by to look & tweak the work until it was perfect. Working with Andy and B&B was a pleasure. I would hire them again & recommend them. The attention to detail, to my concerns & involvement/knowledge of the project, and the desire to have the project done right (without nickel & diming me) makes B&B rise to the top.

We're thoroughly pleased with the service we received and the end product. Andy started by giving us the no budget plan which we then pared down to meet our budgetary needs. He was always on time, responsive, and patient. His crew was extremely skilled, efficient and respectful. The work ended up looking fabulous. We had some plants that didn't survive the winter after installation and Andy replaced all of them without question. The only very minor complaint is that I felt they were a little stingy on the mulch in our very sizable planting beds.
Description of Work: Andy designed a landscaping plan for our small St. Louis Park lot. He and his crew stripped the site nearly bare and installed plants, stone borders, stone path, stone wall, and new sod.

Contacted Bed and Borders based on findings here on Angie's List. Andy was very responsive and we scheduled the work for fall after the pool was closed. He presented me with a bid quickly and work began on schedule. No design was drawn but I am sure if you want one he will do that. I did not really care as my major concerns were getting rid of existing weedy mess, having plants that looked good, smelt good and were low maintenance. My house was begging for some "curb appeal". Project went fine, probably took longer than they thought due to the drastic demo necessary to get it ready. The actual planting and stonework etc. went much faster. Andy would usually show up to check on things. Except for a few day workers on the demo all are employed just by Beds and Borders (no sub) and Chris is the foreman always there. He was extremely patient and polite answering my many questions and concerns. I did change some things as we went and he made sure it all got done. Great company.

This company is a breath of fresh air!! Andy's ideas were right on, and he and his business partners are very easy to work with. I had worked with a couple different landscaping companies to the point of building a design, and was not satisfied with any of them. Andy came in last minute, at the end of the season with the perfect plan, and implemented that plan within a week or so. His team was extremely professional, clean, knowledgeable, collaborative, flexible and fun to work with - and all for a great price! Thank you!! I can't wait to see it all next spring/summer... not to mention for years to come.

He came out when he said he would and was very polite. He sent me an email estimate, which was fine with me. However, the estimate didn't explain much in terms of what kind of rock and mulch he'd use or what it would look like. We went with a less expensive estimate that was clearer in terms of what exactly would be done.

Andy came out to look at my yard in the spring and came up with a general design and estimate. Although a drawn design was not included, he was good about answering my questions about the design and plants he was recommending and we had an open dialog about what would work and look good. The work was completed during a week around the time he first projected. I made a last minute request for the addition of a patio and Andy accepted the change (and made it happen!) without batting an eye. Follow-through and corrections of some minor omissions were made fairly promptly. Andy has been, and continues to be, very good to work with.
Description of Work: My front and back yards were pretty much completely re-landscaped, including removal of all old plants and replacement of part of lawn.
