They started the Friday before Mother’s Day and finished Saturday after the Fourth of July. It’s hard to give them one grade because the work is excellent, the product they use is excellent, I would say “A”. The employees they had was an “A”. It’s a small company run by a husband and wife. The wife I would give an “A”. The husband I would give a “D” or an “F”. The pricing is fair. What you get, they do a heck of a job, so the pricing is fair. The quality of the work done I would say is an “A”. Again, it’s multifaceted so it’s not fair to give one comment. The problem is with Mr. Imhoff, he’s inconsiderate, he’s disrespectful. Where his wife is just the opposite, she is very pleasant to work with. Service responsiveness, if I had to give it a grade I would say a “B” probably. Punctuality - It’s hard to give on grade because the person who did the work, they basically had one person that painted, so he was punctual. You’ve got to figure my house is 1,940 square feet, it’s not a big house. It took them from May 12th until July 11th something like that. Now that is too long. Now weather obviously plays into it, but it took longer. It didn’t really bother me, but it’s just longer than I expected. Professionalism – “A” for the employees, “F” for one of the owners.

This was a great experience - Mary was available to give a quote right away, the quote came in below some other quotes we had received, and they were able to start right away. My husband and I spent almost a year trying to get multiple layers of stubborn wallpaper down, and Jeff was able to get it done in less than two weeks. Jeff cleaned up completely at the end of every day so there was no disruption to our home life. Our walls look brand-new and we couldn't be more pleased with the workmanship.
Description of Work: Removing wallpaper from the entryway, hallway, 1 bedroom, dining room, kitchen; patching all walls (some were paneled); skim coating and prepping all walls for us to paint.

They were prompt, prepared all surfaces we'll prior to painting. Their materials were high quality. Prior jobs by other painters did not hold up due to the harsh south facing direction and inadequate preparation. I was very pleased with imhoff, and plan to use them again.
Description of Work: They painted the front of my house, including replacing a number of sections of siding prior to painting that were in very poor shape. They also painted my front door and various trim.

Email received on 10/11/12 below says it all (see previous review on 8/1/2011). I did receive multiple other emails from Mary and John asking me to review my original review which I chose not to answer. ============================================================== As a business person I make decisions constantly on how to best spend my time. You have the opportunity to select any contractor you choose. I have the opportunity to select which customers I work for as well as which ones I will invest my time in preparation of a proposal. With our perfectionist staff your job looked like a 12 thousand job! At this point I choose between two lose-lose situtations; hand you an extimate that you think your being screwed with or I choose not to estimate your job! You told me that you were gonna get bids from angie painters and not just from paint contractors so I make my decision. Lots of people compare oranges to apples and thats OK, I choose to save my time but this was not the right decision with you. Somehow I got the feeling that when you holding the purse strings that I was suppose to get on my knees and beg from you. I do get on my knees but when that happens its never about money! You have chosen to harbor all this hatred, anger, bitterness, resentment and lack of forgiveness. This is not what I would model to my kids! In closing, It was once said that anger, bitterness, resentment never hurt where its poured but rather where its stored. May God bless your family. -- John Imhoff Imhoff Painting Company Direct: 651.687.9538 Remedying Surfaces for 22 Years "Fall in Love with your Home Again!" Interior - Exterior - Carpentry

So why did we choose to give them a "D" for the overall experience and a D for responsiveness and F for professionalism? We liked the quality of the work that we got for the interior painting that we decided to contact them for the exterior painting that we wanted to have done for our house. Our latest encounter with Imhoff Painting wasn't so pleasant. John Imhoff, husband of Mary and one of the owners came out to do an estimate in late June 2011. John was pleasant and accomodating enough but when I mentioned that I was getting multiple quotes, including one from a friend who found a painter through Angie's List, John came unhinged. He went off his rocker, proceeding to berate me for (a) looking for nothing but price (b) not being appreciative of the quality that Imhoff Painting would offer (c) those "d*** liberals" don't treat my people right. It was like he had lost all his rationality at that point. I challenged him on the proposition that I didn't understand the quality as clearly, it was a reason that we had invited him back to provide an estimate. And why would a job that would cost upwards of $5000 not be estimated by multiple people? I think we'd be fools to not go through multiple bids and be educated by professionals who do this for a living about our options. After this strange and insulting and bizarre encounter, John sent me this email on June 22 - (personal references edited to provide anonymity) and I think this says it all "Having spent 23 years in the business has brought a wealth of knowledge to our Company and in turn to our customers on the technical aspects of surpassing the ten year life of exterior paint jobs and also how to sell them. We know that folks who get from 3-8 bids are most concerned about price rather than how long the paint job will last. And that's OK but they need to match up with a contractor with the same values. From what I thought I heard.... it sounds like Angie's list is a perfect fit for you. We would be led to assume that you were not pleased with our company performance with your interior work because you were getting contractor recommendations from your friends for your exterior! I limit my sales call and proposal time to one third of my week, to accomplish this it has been necessary to charge for estimates and this keeps my work week on track. This way I turn no one down its their decision on who they select! However in lieu of this I sometimes offer to spend time on the proposal if the homeowner gives me pertinent information for this process. Without this information a proposal would not have enough accuracy for you to do a competitive comparison. In order for me to do this; I would need to know if I am competing with the 3-5,7-8 or the 10-13 year paint jobs and to do this I would need this information from you: 1. Your budget and/or a budget range 2. The specs on paint and primer and the number of gal.of each used From this I could predict the life of your paint job and offer a accurate comparison. Not only is the paint job different but the selling process is too! Purchasing price is a no brainier---just pick the lowest number. If purchasing long term need to evaluate the preparation, the primers and where they are used, caulking, topcoat, trust, integrity of the company, their track record along with reference and down the line. While this is necessary is is neither easy nor fun, but then neither is a pre-mature repaint! Please Advise! Colorfully Yours, -- John Imhoff Imhoff Painting Company Direct: 651.687.9538 " So, moral of the story: if you want to go with Imhoff Painting, some words of advice (a) be a dumb consumer and assume that you'll take his one and only bid (b) don't use Angie's List or friends recommendations (c) be willing to be insulted and berated for your choices I think not.
Description of Work: We contacted Imhoff Painting to have our living room painted. Mary Imhoff, the co-owner, was prompt and came in with samples and provided perspectives on various types of paint options including some interesting textured and multi-layered board samples. We ultimately chose to have a 2 colors on the walls - 1 as an accent color over the fireplace and to have the ceiling retextured and painted. Throughout the 1 week project, Ben Imhoff, who acted as lead painter, and Mary kept in close contact, keeping us informed of the progress and when we ran into an unexpected issue with needing to replace versus restain the trim, we were given options and the pros/cons of each. Each night, the living room was left clean and immaculate. Overall, we would have given Imhoff painting an A for both quality/responsiveness/punctuality and professionalism for this job. However, the estimate process from John Imhoff in June 2011 was a nightmare in customer service, insulting and berating comments - in a word if there was a grade lower than "F" for customer service and the selling process, this would have rated it. John Imhoff evidently uses the "Sadler" sales school of sales technique but he seems to forget that customer service and acknowledgement of the customer's needs is a part of the selling process. Imhoff Painting - you guys did a quality job on the painting but your sales process with John is sadly lacking and woefully subpar. John, you need to think about getting out of this business if you think that your business is worth insulting your customers intelligence.

The company and all employees were very courteous, neat, professional and punctual. I have no complaints on the quality of their work and attention to detail. While painting interior rooms, the team was sure to cover everything with plastic and tape and did a fantastic job of cleaning up after themselves. The whole process was quick and the house looks great.
Description of Work: This is the 4th time I have worked with Imhoff Painting. The first time was the painting of the exterior of my home in 2001. Since that time they have repainted interior rooms on two occassions and just recently were hired to repaint the outside of my home.

Unbelievable service and follow through
Description of Work: I found this company through a networking group I belong to. We have Vinyl siding on our house that was at least 20 years old and very dinghy. We wanted to freshen up the look of the house with out spending the money to re-side the house. Mary came out to go over color choices with me and my wife and she had some great recommendations based on our tastes. We agreed on a color and received a quote from her and two other painting companies. Imholf was 25% cheaper than the other two companies and when I asked the other companies to explain the reason they were so much more they could not give me a reason. I liked the details of the bid that Imholf provided. They stated in the contract what kind of paint and how much they were going to use. They indicated that the paint had to be a special blend to ensure there was no problems with the vinyl. When we signed the contract we agreed on a start date and finish date and despite some rainy days the job was started and completed on-time. They did a great job with the house and came back the week after to do a walk through with me to make sure I was satisfied with the work. I was. About three months later I notice that the siding was starting to warp and bend a little. I continued to watch it and then as it was getting worse I decided to call Imholf paintig back to have them look at it. They were at my house by the end of the week and were very honest with me and said that something must be wrong with the paint formula. They called the paint company and had them come out to review the siding and to get some paint samples from the paint can. Imholf painting keep me up to date on were we were in the process and even came out a few more times to see if the siding got worse, it did. In the end they worked with the paint company to have our house completely resided and to repaint it again. They handled this situation extremely well from start to finish. You can always tell a great company when everything goes south and they do everything possible to make it right without you having to incite the riot act. Very classy indeed. In the end the house looks great!!!!!

Requested an estimate from the company to paint the exterior of our home. They showed up and when I indicated that we needed them to separate the west side of our home out on their estimate for insurance purposes, Mr. Imhoff quickly put his pen away and said I'm not interested in the job. He didn't even allow me to explain it was just a formality to so we could get the difference between the actual cash value claim and the replacement cost reimbursed from our insurance company. I wasn't asking him to perform insurance work as we were going to have the entire home painted, I just need the information to get reimbursed from my insurance company for actually having the work completed. It was a slam dunk for him but he was too short sided to get an explanation. He wasted my time and I would never consider doing business with him.

Mary and John quickly responded to request for quotes. I had an immediate trust in John and his estimates. Mary provided color consultation, she is a dream to work with, she really listened to what I had to say and help me find hues in my target color ranges. During the job, Ben and Maher were continually checking in with us on what we wanted done and gave advice when requested to do so. There was no pressure. We trusted them to do an excellent job, and they did so. They have an excellent team of painters who truly care about your home as well as their work. We felt very comfortable having them in our home.
Description of Work: Painted living room, Foyer, dining room, Kitchen (faux treatment), Stairwell and ceiling in son's bedroom, enameling woodwork and doors on crown molding, baseboard and cabinetry. This is in addition to painting done in 2 bathrooms and a master bedroom, which were subcontracted with remodeling we'd done with another design build company. The stairwell and ceiling in son's bedroom required the application of a skim coat as well as crack (lots of 'em) repair.

I WAS SURPRISED THAT THE COMPANY CALLED TO SCHEDULE AN EARLIER THAN EXPECTED START DATE. THE JOB WAS TO BE COMPLETED IN TWO DAYS BUT TOOK THREE. MARY WAS VERY NICE AND HELPFUL WHEN ASSISTING ME WITH COLOR SELECTION. I DID FEEL THAT BECAUSE THE JOB HAD STARTED EARLIER, I WAS RUSHED INTO MAKING A QUICK SELECTION. IT WAS NOT DISCLOSED TO ME THAT THERE WOULD BE AN ADDITIONAL FEE TO PAINT THE INTERIOR FACE OF THE GARAGE SERVICE DOOR NOR WAS IT DISCLOSED WHAT THE COSTS WOULD BE TO FIX A 2 X 2 SECTION OF THE FAMILY ROOM WALL. THERE WAS AN ADDITIONAL $300.00 ADDED TO MY BILL WHICH I FELT WAS QUITE HIGH. THE PAINTER WAS PROMPT, FRIENDLY AND VERY PROFESSIONAL. THE WORK SPACE WAS KEPT NEED EACH DAY. HE DID HOWEVER HAVE A HABIT OF LEAVING THE LIGHTS ON IN ROOMS OTHER THAN WHERE HE WAS WORKING. OVERALL THE COMPANY DID NICE WORK HOWEVER I DO FEEL THE PRICES WAS VERY HIGH. I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY TO SOMEONE LOOKING FOR A GENERAL PAINTER.

IT WAS A PLEASURE TO WORK FOR THE MEMBER. I AM SORRY -- I DIDN'T MEAN TO RUSH HER ON THIS INSTALLATION, I WISH SHE WOULD HAVE VOICED HER CONCERN TO ME AT THE TIME, INSTEAD OF COMPLAINING AFTER THE FACT ON ANGIE'S LIST. WHEN I OFFERED TO COME EARLIER, SHE COULD HAVE DECLINED, MANY CUSTOMERS LIKE TO HAVE US COME EARLIER. OUR PAINTERS DISCOVERED A WET, MOLDY SMELLING AREA IN THE FAMILY ROOM (2 X 2), PERHAPS CAUSED BY CONDENSATION IN THE WINTER FROM A HOLE IN THE WALL. THIS MESSAGE WAS LEFT FOR THE MEMBER ON A COM LOG, AND WE REPAIRED IT, RATHER THAN JUST PAINTING OVER IT. THE PAINT COLOR, A DEEP GREEN AND OFF-WHITE, WERE SELECTED AFTER THE ORIGINAL PROPOSAL WAS ACCEPTED BY THE MEMBER. THE DEEP GREEN FOR ACCENT WALLS AND SOFFITS REQUIRED A SECOND COAT; THE SERVICE DOOR/FRAME WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE ORIGINAL QUOTE EITHER. SHE SIGNED AN ADDITIONAL WORK ORDER FOR THE ADDED WORK. WHY THIS COMPLAINT THEN? THE MEMBER ATTESTS TO THE FACT THAT OUR PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS TOOK THREE DAYS, INSTEAD OF TWO, WHICH IS A TESTIMONY TO THE FACT THAT MORE TIME WAS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THIS PROJECT TO THE DESIRED OUTCOME, BOTH THE MEMBER AND IMHOFF PAINTING WOULD BE HAPPY WITH. "THE QUALITY OF THE WORK IS LONG REMEMBERED AFTER THE BILL HAS BEEN PAID". THANK YOU.

I AM SO PLEASED WITH THE QUALITY OF IMHOFF'S WORK! THEY ARE PROFESSIONAL, COURTEOUS, TIMELY AND VERY GOOD AT WHAT THEY DO. OUR PROJECT TOOK A LITTLE OVER A WEEK TO COMPLETE BUT EVERY THING WAS COVERED, DROP CLOTHS COVERED ALL OF THE FLOORS, PAPER WAS TAPED DOWN TO THE HARDWOOD KITCHEN FLOORS AND ALL WINDOWS AND TRIM WERE TAPED. THEY EVEN CHANGED THE LIGHT BULBS IN MY 2ND STORY LIGHT FIXTURES! TO BE FAIR, THEY ARE NOT INEXPENSIVE BUT YOU GET YOUR MONEY'S WORTH. I HAVE SINCE HAD THEM QUOTE ON PAINTING 2 BEDROOMS BUT WAS UNABLE TO AWARD THEM THE JOB BECAUSE I COULDN'T JUSTIFY THE PRICE AGAINST THE EASY SCOPE OF THE JOB. IF YOU HAVE A CHALLENGING JOB OR AN AREA THAT YOU REALLY WANT HANDLED WITH PROFESSIONAL 'KID' GLOVES, YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY YOU CHOSE IMHOFF!
Description of Work: THEY PAINTED MY ENTIRE MAIN LEVEL (APPROX. 1300 SQ. FT)INCLUDING 2 ROOMS WITH 2 STORY CEILINGS AS WELL AS A STAIRWAY AND UPSTAIRS HALLWAY. THEY 2 COATED EVERYTHING, PRIMED THE AREAS THAT REALLY NEEDED IT AND PERFORMED HEAVY 'PREP' IN SOME AREAS, BASICALLY REBUILDING SEVERAL CORNERS AND SKIM-COATING A POWDER ROOM AFTER WALLPAPER REMOVAL.

IT WAS A PLEASURE TO WORK FOR THE MEMBER, AND THANK YOU FOR THE GOOD COMMENTS. BEN, OUR PROJECT FOREMAN, GETS VERY EXCITED ABOUT DOING THE PROJECT IN THE CORRECT WAY, AND ONLY OFFERED THE CEILING PAINTING ADDITION BECAUSE, CEILINGS USUALLY DO GET SOILED AND DINGY LOOKING DUE TO FURNACE AND COOKING ISSUES. OUR PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS ONLY SUGGEST ADDITIONAL WORK ORDERS WHEN THEY SEE THAT IT WILL GREATLY IMPROVE THE FINAL OUTCOME OF THE PROJECT. WITH CEILINGS, IT IS THE CORRECT ORDER OF THE PROCESS. BEN WAS MERELY SUGGESTING THAT IF THE WALLS ARE DONE NOW, IT WOULD BE COST EFFECTIVE. TO COME BACK IN A YEAR OR TWO TO TAKE CARE OF YELLOWED CEILINGS, WOULD COST MORE MONEY THEN, BECAUSE ALL THE WALLS WOULD HAVE TO BE MASKED OFF. WE OFFER OUR APOLOGIES TO THE MEMBER, WE NEVER INTEND TO MAKE THE CUSTOMER FEEL PRESSURED INTO ANYTHING. THANK YOU! MARY J. IMHOFF
