Description of Work: We contacted Adolpgson construction in March of 2014 for a bid on a new home . We met Ryan and Pat Adolphson at their place of business and sat down to talk about our house. We included a drawing and floor plan of the house and discussed our wishes for the construction as well as windows, roofing, etc. Ryan was very excited to offer a bid and informed us he could have a price within a week. I thought that was fast but perhaps they had good connections. If their price was competitive, we would have given them the house to build since they are young and ambitious guys, so we thought. And they said that they could begin construction within a few months | |After three weeks I sent Ryan an email asking how it was going since I had not heard from him. No reply. Another week went by and I sent him another email asking if he was still interested in bidding the house. He replied back that one of their subs was out of town and that he would have a bid for us in a week. | |About two weeks after that we received a forwarded email that was originally sent to Ryan and then sent to me from Menards with some building material prices which included windows and roofing that we had not asked for. The quote included ashpault shingles and Crestline windows but we told Ryan and Pat originally that we wanted Marvin windows and a steel roof. | |I emailed Ryan what the Menards price was all about and received no answer from him. And this is were it ends. He never contacted me again. He basically fell off the end of the earth. No bid, no communication. I suspect there is something pretty wrong with this company whether it's personal or financial but I will absolutely not do business with them if this is how things are so far. I gave up on them because of all the red flags that arose throughout the process. It was a bizarre experience.

A friend took me to a home that was being remodeled by Ryan and Patrick Adolphson. They were doing the same type of remodel that I would need. Their father, a businessman in Duluth, praised his sons highly and said that they do wonderful work. Ryan was a very upbeat, cordial individual who said he and his brother really like their profession. I was impressed by Ryan's attitude about his work, and I asked him to look at the house I bought that needed a total remodel. Ryan was very enthusiastic and said that he and Patrick would like to do the work for me. They wrote up a contract which I signed. They started the work on the house in June. Ryan said it would take about 2-1/2 months to complete the work. They worked extremely hard the first 1-1/2 months, but then everything slowed down. I owned another house that I put on the market when construction started on my other house. Because their dad recommended them so highly and because I trusted Ryan and Patrick completely, I didn't bother them very often. I asked Ryan to call me if he had any questions at all or if he wanted to ask me something. He rarely contacted me, so I would stop by the house at least a couple times a week. After the first six weeks or so, they usually weren't there when I would stop by. Six weeks into the job they weren't at the house for an entire week. The plumber was there when I stopped by and he said that they guys were spending a week in the Boundary Waters. That would have been fine with me, but Ryan didn't bother to tell me. They dragged the remodel out from 2-1/2 months to 7 months, which caused many changes in delivery dates of appliances, bathroom fixtures, flooring, etc. I can't go into much detail because this note would get extremely long, so I'll just give a little information on the outcome of the remodel. The house looks nice on the outside even though they did not do most things the way I requested. I had hired a designer, so Ryan had something concrete to go by. He said if I wanted to change anything I should tell him before they started. Well, I did request changes in the windows and they ordered the wrong windows. I asked that a sliding door slide from right to left, but they installed a left to right sliding door. They turned the door around, but now it is backwards, weak, and won't lock. They did many things the opposite of what I asked them to do. I purchased almost all of the interior items, and purchased them on my credit card and didn't use the money alloted to me on the contract. The house looks really nice when you walk inside, but after living here a week, I started noticing everything that was done poorly or incorrectly. The woodwork they chose is very poor quality - probably pine. The closets they chose are of the worst quality. There are hundreds of nail holes on the windows, doors, etc., that weren't filled in. The cabinets they installed were done carelessly, and there are many more things that were done carelessly. The only reason the interior of the house looks as nice as it does is because of the great design and the items I chose for the house. I typed a list of everything done incorrectly or poorly, and it ended up to be seven pages long. I paid them $15,000 extra at the end of the job, but after paying them they didn't come back to complete things they said they would complete. I was extremely excited when the remodel started and I trusted them to do very professional work. The finishing work is poor, and I am very worried about what will go wrong with the house, because I don't know how many shortcuts they took to save money. I could go into so much more detail, but this note is already too lengthy, so I'll end here. Ryan and Patrick met with me once, and their dad also met with me once. Nothing got settled, because they wanted more money to finish what they were already paid to do. Ryan will not return my calls and neither will his dad. I am giving serious thought of contacting the Better Business Bureau regarding this matter.
