+ 0 moreI hired Mark and Dan Schonhardt and his son to build a deck frame onto my house in February 2022. They seemed legitimate, based on recommendation on Nextdoor and elsewhere. They built the structure in April (June 6 now), but what they built did not pass inspection by the city due to how they connected the deck post to their helical footings. Mark went silent on me and I have not received a reply to my emails, calls, or texts on how they are fixing the issue, or when, in over two weeks. As a small business owner, I can not in good continence recommend this business to anyone. I am now in the position to have to hire someone to fix it so I can move forward with the project. Searching now for someone to fix this company's poor work. Picture of how they attached the helical footings to the post. Not good.

+ -1 moreDan (the son) was prompt and courteous for the initial consultation and the work. He was very competent and was able to save a brick arch that my counter contractors couldn't guarantee would stand during the demo. He did go over his estimate because he encountered about triple the standard/normal amount of concrete or whatever the substrate for the tile was. Our house is filled with odd/quirky things like that so I wasn't surprised. He communicated during the job well (explaining what he encountered and seeking approval for the way he planned to deal with it, etc) and he cleaned up the job site well. He even saved a custom tile inlay in the middle of the demo'd tile that we were hoping to keep. Very happy with the results.

+ 3 moreMark had a great alternative to using just screens for our porch. He introduced us to a product that has screens and sliding panels that provide a clear view while adding some insulation and protection from precipitation. He used tongue and groove cedar for the walls and ceiling. We had electrical and cable put in the porch as well. We have used Mark for several projects and would highly recommend him. Easy to work with, flexible, and reasonably priced. Our porch was completed mid August and we spent many hours on it throughout the rest of the summer and fall season. We are anxious for nice weather to return to be out there again!
Description of Work: Mark built and enclosed a screened in porch for us underneath our addition he previously built. He also created a storage room for us at one end under the addition that is accessible from the porch.

+ -1 moreI found working with Mark very easy, he worked with me to ensure we had covered all the small details which can sometimes be overlooked by other contractors. He was very flexible with the timing of the project which often presented a challenge because we were waiting for the neighborhood association to approve the project which took twice as long as we understood it might. I appreciated his patience and ability to work on our time schedule. I also took note of his extreme care in ensuring the upfront measurements were precise because their were some limitations on the size due to some features on the back of the house.
Description of Work: Mark and his son built a deck on the back of our house which is a 2 1/2 story home, with a portion of it open for a grill and the majority of it screened in, with stairs down to the ground.

+ -1 moreWe chose Schonhardt and Sons for our addition because of the reasonable bid, references we checked, and the opportunity to have the cabinets made in house. We had a detailed list of what we envisioned and Mark was able to work with our ideas and build exactly what we wanted. He kept to a pretty good work schedule and kept us updated as construction progressed. If a problem or a need to change something came up Mark was flexible, fair and worked with us to come up with a solution. His crew and subcontractors were respectful and professional. We are thrilled with our enlarged kitchen and family room and have received numerous compliments on the project. We will definitely call Mark Schonhardt again for future projects!
Description of Work: Schonhardt and Sons added on a 12X24 addition to our family room and kitchen. They also remodeled our kitchen with new cabinets, granite countertops, hardwood flooring, planning area, backsplash, stone surround for fireplace and lighting.

+ -1 moreNick took a lot of time showing us different stains, styles and ideas of cabinets for our kitchen remodel. He gave us suggestions when we weren't sure about something, but he also listened to our ideas as well. Nick was very professional and excited about his work. Nick's pricing allowed us to put in custom cabinetry, whereas, some other quotes we received put it out of our reach. As a result, we have a beautiful kitchen with a gorgeous 9 foot island that truly is the heart of our home.
Description of Work: Mark's son, Nick, helped us design custom cabinets for our kitchen remodel (which was also done by Schonhardt and Sons.)

Description of Work: If you are anticipating doing a home improvement and would like to have it accomplished by a reliable professional company, I would strongly recommend Schonhardt & Sons Home Improvement. We recently had our deck (12’ x 14’) transformed into a screen porch and added a 7’ x 12’ deck extension and the work was done perfectly and within the timeframe given to us. Everyone who has seen our screen porch and deck has commended on how beautiful it is. During the construction, Mark Schonhardt and his crew clean-up every evening prior to going home. They were courteous and provided suggestions prior to the build and also informed us of what would be expected during the fabrication process. This same consideration was provided to us, when we requested that they also provide a tile back-splash for our kitchen following the screen porch and deck extension.

+ -1 moreThey provided us with a very competitive price. I did not feel that the products that they were quoting and the materials were of the quality that I was looking for. That is the reason I did not contract them for the job. They also had no experience with the material that we wanted to use. I was surprised that they had no experience working with this product since it is one of the most common. They were timely and made a very professional proposal. We would have given them the business had they worked with the material we were looking for. I may use them in the future for a basement job.

+ -1 moreI was amazed at how he treated this deck like it was his own - he actually called me back after drawing the permit plan to recommend we consider removing an angle to make the deck more useful on one end. I think a lot of other contractors would have saved themselves a call. I also made the deck bigger before he started and he didn't balk at having to update the permit. He said it was better we make it right the first time, instead of making it feel like an imposition. Mark and Dan (his son) kept the site very clean and organized. The deck was finished in 3 days. I was very impressed with his communication as well. He is honest and considerate - rare traits in a contractor. We will be hiring him in the future to finish our basement.
Description of Work: Mark gave us very affordable options for a very large deck - we chose to go with a Trex system and upgrade to an aluminum railing to avoid maintenance. (Deck is appx. 23 ft x 14 and includes stairs w/ landing and arches underneath.) We were planning to interview two other deck contractors, but an hour after Mark left, we agreed he was the perfect choice based on cost, honest personality and his display of careful consideration about our wants/needs. We then called to book the job.

About a month ago we met to discuss basement remodeling, he took a look at the basement, then we went outside to look at the exterior, and where the water was coming in. He said he would send a landscaping associate out to take a look at our yard to correct drainage issues but we have not heard or seen anything since the initial meeting.

Description of Work: Mark framed my basement for me. There was an awkward 8x10 space that I wasn't sure what to do with. The original house plans had this area as crawl space. Mark came up with a design for the basement so that this area will become usable space, instead of just a huge closet once we finish the basement.

He was the only one of 3 designs I got where the contractor actually understood exactly what I wanted done. The work began within 2 weeks of my approving the quote. The porch was built quickly - No corners were cut. The work it Top Notch. I have not seen any other screened porches in my neighborhood that match the quality and the attention to detail. The screens are custom fit; I have received numerous compliments on the porch, and show it off to friends and neighbors every chance I get!
Description of Work: SS Decks (Mark) built a screened in porch and deck, and also added a service door on the garage w/a platform so we had access to the back yard. Removed siding from the house and replaced with cedar tongue and groove in the porch area. Put in trusses, roofing, and siding on the porch.

His subs were all respectable, professional and did quality work for us. The process took a few months but we never felt that it was obtrusive. Mark is also very response and will return calls within 24 hours.
Description of Work: Finished an unfinished basement space to include a fireplace, cabinetry, laminate counter and sink, and storage closet. Also installed a therapy beam to support occupational therapy equipment.

We had a rather large basement build-out project last summer with tight deadlines and Mark came through with flying colors.
