I had four different bids for the job and I instantly was impressed with Tom. He came out to bid the job and worked around my schedule and gave me a very fair and honest price. He offered good communication the entire time and was very flexible. As an example he roughed-in the lighting for the bathroom and my wife and I deceided to make some changes. Tom did not even hesitate, he agreed with our change that deviated from the original plan I gave him and agreed with us on what we were doing. Many contractors would rather try to go home or talk you out of making changes.Tom really knows what he is doing and his experience really shows. I contacted Tom Mertz and he gave me a quote for time and possible materials. He was able to come over the next day. I had spent a lot of time trying to find the cause of an open circuit. He was able to diagnose it and fix it in about 15 minutes and show me how to do it myself in the future. Since he was way under his minimum of an hour, he asked if there was anything else I needed. I had wanted an outdoor outlet installed for sometime. He was able to do that in about a half hour and the job was much better than I could have done myself. He still just charged me the minimum, which was well worth it!

Tom is very personable. He is very responsive to calls and emails with regard to scheduling. He was very flexible with my scheduling needs. He shopped around for the best price on the necessary materials. He showed up on time, was very professional and clearly communicated how the project was going and what time he would likely be finished. He changed 3 lightbulbs that were out at no additional cost. I was very pleased with his work, which passed inspection by the city of Plymouth today.

I called Tom on Wednesday to get a quote. He came over the next day and was very professional. He gave me an estimate for the work I wanted done. He had an unexpected opening and was able to come the next day. he completed the work efficiently. He discussed some ideas for some future work that I am planning and I would definitely have him come back when I get to that project. He answered questions about some other concerns that I had. Again, he was very professional, cooperative and efficient.

I called on Tuesday, he was here on Wednesday at the promised time, and the work was done in 15 minutes.

I needed 2 smoke detectors replaced and batteries replaced in others as well as light bulbs in several fixtures that I could not reach. I called him on a Monday and he was at the house the next afternoon, right on time. He did the work in under an hour and so did not charge me for the full hour. He put a drop cloth under his ladder and kept things tidy as he worked. He was professional and cheerful and very pleasant to deal with. He deserves the great rating he has from Angie's List.

Tom was a referral from another Angie's List provider. He called before coming over; arrived at the time he said he would; reviewed what needed to be done; and, did the work immediately! He tested everything during and after the installation. The charge was MORE than fair and we will recommend Tom to everyone we know. NOTE TO SELF: why didn't I join Angie's List sooner?

I'm sure what we asked him to do was the simplest of tasks for an experienced professional like him, but he patiently answered all my questions. Having dealt with my fair share of contractors, I can say that Tom was one of the most pleasant, honest and forthright professionals I have worked with. He returned my call immediately, gave a rough estimate for the work over the phone (which he actually stuck to!) and then came out the day before he was to go on vacation to replace 3 non-functional fire/carbon monoxide alarms. He finished the work within an hour, and while he was there we asked if he could come back to add an outlet over our bar in the kitchen to be used as a charging station. He said he would call us when he returned from vacation to schedule a time. We received a call from him within a couple weeks to schedule the work. Not only did he come out when he said he would, but he finished the extra work for the same amount of money he originally quoted me. I'm extremely pleased with everything about Tom's work from start to finish. He charges reasonable rates, is a friendly guy to boot and I would definitely recommend him (or use his services again). As part of a sump pump modificatin, I needed to upgrade a non-GFCI outlet to a GFCI outlet where the sump pump would be plugged in. I called Tom on a Thursday. He had just returned from out of town and also had an unexpected personal situation arise, but he still found time to fit me into his busy schedule. He called me back after working out his schedule and told me he could come to my house on Saturday, which was preferable to me anyway. He anticipated a mid to later afternoon arrival, but he called just before 1:00pm and said he could be at my house in 15 minutes. Tom arrived and I showed him into the basement. He immediately began working on the outlet. Tom was very efficient and methodical in his work. He kept working even as he created small talk with me and as he gave me some pointers. He completed the upgrade in approximately 15 to 20 minutes. He asked me if there was anything else I wanted him to look at while he was here. We had one outlet in our Den that every time we plugged something into it, the TV and lights would flicker. Tom took a look at two outlets, replacing one of them with a new duplex outlet. This took approximately 10 minutes. All in all, Tom was probably onsite for 45 minutes. Since he had not even been there for an hour, he asked us again if there was anything else he could look at. I didn't have anything at this time, but we found our electrician for any future needs. I would highly recommend Tom for his honesty and workmanship.

Tom made recommendations based on his years of experience and what he would do in his own home, not just what is legal or technically possible. I am very confident his recommendations resulted in my best option to minimize future complications and simplify future maintenance (if necessary), and that they did not cost me more in the short term. I will have him back in the future to help me with other electrical work.

Tom was on vacation but picked up my call and gave me a rough estimate over the phone, leading me to believe my first estimate from another company was high. I am getting more bids now.

Tom is wonderful to do business with. He is a true professional and a great person! Had a need for some better lighting in a home office so I contacted Tom. We scheduled an appointment for him to stop by, gather the necessary info and later provide an estimate. He arrived at the scheduled time and began his thorough look-over of my situation. I knew this was going to be a challenging installation -- I wan't certain it could even be done -- and was immediately put at ease with Tom's thorough look over. He had considered everything and when he felt comfortable with what he was looking at he left and produced his cost estimate several days later at the agreed upon time. He wasn't the cheapest but he wasn't the most expensive. Confident he could perform the work, I give the go-ahed and we scheduled a time for the installation. Tom arrived on time the day of installation and immediately began laying down protective floor & room coverings. All set to do his work he began the preliminary work of recessed-can placement. We began with discussing hoped-for recessed-can placement and when that was completed Tom started to do his electrical forensics. It's not only a matter of where I'd like the fixtures to go; It's also a matter of where they're ABLE to go. And it's that last point that created the greatest challenge. Tom would carefully diagnose the space above our finished ceiling and rather quickly determine if there's an obstacle lurking above which prevents a recessed can installation. Not only was the placement of the cans a challenge but so too was how the wiring could be snaked about above this finished ceiling. Well, to make a long story short, after considerable care and diagnosis was completed Tom was confident on where the cans could be placed and how he was going to run his wiring. He was spot-on and when the holes were cut in the ceiling each (four in all) were free and clear allowing for the successful installation of these four recessed lights and switch. Total time needed for this work was around 5 hours which is simply amazing considering the complexity of what was done. Tom's service is excellent and I will definitely be contacting him for any future electric needs.

I was concerned that cutting holes in the ceiling might lead to patching problems but Tom did a wonderful job of cutting clean holes and putting in the lighting fixtures in with no mess. His suggestion of how to place the fixtures so that we could get the best coverage proved to be exactly what I was looking for. It brought the kitchen more up-to-date and provided better lighting in an area that was extremely dark. His experience and professionalism is truly an asset for a customer who does not know much about lighting.
