B & R Hardwood & Tile

I'm remiss in getting this review posted (2 years!!). Kurt and his team were GREAT to work with! First, as a single woman, it is refreshing not to be talked to like you are a six year old without any knowledge of construction or the capacity to understand it. Kurt was thorough and forthright with his thoughts on the best option for the room particularly when surprises came up with my 1928 home (people do some crazy things). It was also great he took the small job as seriously as he would a large, more profitable job. The original goal was to possibly refinish the old flooring that was covered by carpet and layers of laminate, but it was discovered that there were two versions of flooring and holes in it where an archway or old wall was removed. Also, the flooring in the closet sloped at a crazy angle. Instead of refinishing, new hardwood was laid over the old flooring, leveled and matched as much as possible to the flooring in the rest of the house. It is beautiful. A room that used to be sad, dark and dreary is now one that is a favorite in my house! You will not be disappointed if you contact Kurt to work in your home. He and his crew are professional, prompt, friendly and do fantastic work.

Terrific. They were very prompt, professional and responsive. They helped us troubleshoot the problem to try fixing our floors without a costly repair. We were able to get the floor settled without having to replace the boards. We ended up not needing their services, but would definitely use them again for our flooring needs.

The people at B&R were super nice. They answered all my questions and addressed any concerns promptly and helpfully. I didn't know what to expect with this project and they made me feel at ease. I followed their tips and recommendations for moving furniture back and other things, and everything turned out great. I couldn't be happier with the experience or the results.

These people are fantastic! I was so apprehensive about hiring a contractor for this major project because I had heard so many horror stories about contractors. I was told they never show up on the day or time they say they will and the contract is always way more than the original estimate. The list went on and on. I can honestly say none of that was true with this company. They and any of their associates showed up precisely when they said they would which is important to me because I work nights and have a crazy schedule at the hospital. The thing that most impressed me was that they took the time to really make sure I got a product that was not only aesthetically pleasing, but one that would work well with my floor plan and unique circumstances. These people really care about you as a customer. They took over an hour just to do the initial consultation. I am not familiar with hardwood flooring at all, and they took the time to explain the different types of wood flooring and to go over the pros and cons of each. Some ideas I had were not practical nor recommended because I am on slab. They explained this and helped me find alternatives that worked great. Carol brought over so many samples of wood, and took all the time needed to help me get one I liked. She then wisely recommended I keep the sample and lay it on my flooring for a few days to see it in a different types of lighting and circumstances to make absolutely certain this is what I wanted. Their employees and contractors were polite and efficient. They cleaned up everything after the work was done. The contractor even made temporary stairs so I could get myself and my dog in and out of the upstairs loft. I had to live in my home while they were working, but they did everything they could to accommodate me and my pets. The price at the end was very close to the original estimate. There was a minor overage for gapping of my stairs that took extra work, but I was consulted right away and the charge was reasonable. These people did everything they could to make life easier for me. They came to my home for consultations and even offered to swing by my place to pick up stuff rather than having me do all the running around. I am not a wealthy person, and this was not a big job for them. That being said I felt they treated me with the same respect and courtesy that most companies reserve for VIP clients and large accounts. The way a company treats its smaller, average clients says a lot about the integrity of that company. I will definitely be using this company when it is time to do the next phase of my remodeling. I felt like I got an interior designer consultant and floor installation all in one.

Based on other reviews, I decided to have Kurt Kuhlmann of B&R Hardwood and TIle give me a bid on replacing the flooring in our entranceway, kitchen and dining area. His bid was very competitive and he was a good listener as I told him our needs. So we went with him. Our original flooring in the entrance and dining area was parquet and the kitchen had vinyl. Kurt had Greg and Rob do the demolition, removing the subfloor (damaged by the glue from the parquet install) and installing new. The new subfloor was both screwed and glued in place to minimize squeaking. They then installed porcelain tile in the entrance and closet (prior to installing the tile, they installed a barrier separating the tile from the wood subfloor. allowing the tile to dry properly, assuring a secure fit.). They then went on to removing the upper half of the wall separating the dining and living area, thus opening up the main floor allowing a view to our backyard. Greg and Rob can do just about anything, including drywall. They repaired the wall to which the separating wall connected. They also repaired a hole in the outside wall that had been there due to an exhaust leading from a gas stove that I had removed. I recently painted over the dry wall repairs and the results were flawless. Kevin and Mattie came in next to install the hardwood flooring. After reviewing a number of selections with Kurt we decided to go with Appalachian Red Oak (Appalachian is a Canadian company known for quality flooring). They did a great job and the wood floors are gorgeous. The next stage of the job was installing new baseboards on our entire main floor allowing the new flooring and base boards to blend. Next came the installation of the ledge boards and trim on the new half wall and on the outside walls of our downstairs rooms. The ledge board install in the downstairs rooms was particularly difficult due to the limited area underneath the window trim. Once the ledge boards were installed a very thin strip of wall was still visible, impossible to paint. I asked if they could somehow fill that area with trim, which they did, amazingly. The quality of the baseboards, ledge boards and trim was excellent, both in the quality of the wood and in the stain and finish applied. Kurt and Roy did this finishing work, both meticulous and skilled. Through the whole process, everyone involved did their best to minimize dust and dirt, placing plastic over all of our furniture and hallway entrances and tarps on the floors. Their cleanups were always very thorough. I could not be more pleased.,

They were FANTASTIC! We opted for the dustless option for a bit more but entirely worth it. Everyone was extremely professional and thorough. They were on time every day and kept us informed at each step. They gave us great suggestions for maintenance of both the floors and our cabinets. An added bonus came from learning they do other remodeling work. We will be looking for more ideas from them come next Spring.

We loved working with Kurt and his crew. He was professional and knowledgeable and his crew is great. His drywall crew skim coated over the popcorn ceiling and then smoothed it out. Then his painter finished up with a couple coats of paint. We are very happy with the results.

My wife and I were very happy with the work that Kurt and his people did for us on what was a difficult install because our home was built in 1950 and we also went into our addition which was added on later using very different materials. I feel like out home was a poster child for the "Love it or Leave It" TV series. In short Kurt quickly came to our rescue and he overcame all the issues professionally and with expertise that gave us a huge confidence in his work and the outcome of the project which is breathtakingly beautiful. I highly recommend B&R and will definitely use them in the future!

Kurt was the best. Very responsive, explained everything. The work is perfect. Everything was done as promised.

The entire process was very smooth and professional. Kurt Kuhlmann met with us and explained the entire process and asked a lot of questions to make sure we had everything covered for the tile installation. We needed to get the installation done quickly and B&R took care of it on our schedule. They bid the job on 7/28 and had it wrapped up by 8/18. The installers were great. They had 20 years of experience and it showed on how they quickly and safely they setup, cut and installed the 6" x 24" glazed porcelain tile. The final product was outstanding. My wife loves it. To sum up our experience with B&R Hardwood and Tile they beat the ?Big Box? store estimate for installation, they provided excellent advice, they installed the tile on our schedule and the finished product was spectacular. Called Kurt and scheduled an appointment. Kurt was on time and very knowledgeable on what we were trying to accomplish. We agreed on a timeframe and price. Kurt updated us on the schedule and stayed on top of it. Couldn't ask for a more awesome guy to work with. The guys installed the tile first and did it in 3 days. Turned out awesome. Then they installed the hickory flooring and did it in 1 day. Perfection!!!! Kurt and the team have my highest recommendation!!!!

Kurt was great about reworking his schedule to accommodate us so that the work could be done while we were on vacation. He went out of his way to meet us a couple of times at night or on weekends to finalize details, as well as pick out granite, tiles, faucets,etc. His guidance was quite helpful and my wife and I enjoyed felt good about the materials we selected and the price paid for them. The actual transformation of our bathroom included knocking out a wall to expand the size of the shower. He also was able to raise the ceiling within the shower area by eliminating a soffit. Removing the wall and raising the ceiling has made the room more spacious looking. He also redid all of the tiling, flooring, and installation of a new vanity, cabinets, and other hardware like towel bars. This is the second major project for which I have used B & R. I have been quite pleased with both and will use Kurt's services in the future when the need arises.

I have miles of counter top in my kitchen including an L shaped island that has half round open shelf units on each end. I really wanted to get rid of the shelf units so Kurt came in and inspected the flooring below. Unfortunately there was no existing hard wood floor beneath that part of the island. After tossing around some ideas with Kurt I decided to have my island cabinets painted a contrasting color. Kurt worked with our schedules, my painter's schedule and had everything done in a timely manner. Kurt even recommended that I go online to find the wood support brackets that I had in mind for the island counter top. He said the brackets would be much more affordable than anything he could be able to find in the stores. He was right! Kurt is very personable, adaptable, considerate and great at returning phone calls. He has always been up front with his prices. There are never any surprises. This was my 6th project working with B & R Hardwood and Tile. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

This is the second time that we have had B & R refinish our floors. The wood turned out beautifully. Kurt Kuhlmann, who is the owner of this business, is very easy to work with. He goes out of his way to make things right. I would definitely hire B & R again.

Everything went smoothly. Kurt, the owner, arranged all of the labor and installation. Met me at the carpet store to pick out carpet and pad, and also met with me at the tile store to help with my choices of stone tile for the fireplace. He had told me about a rebate that we could take advantage of when we purchased the carpet and kept encouraging me to place the order so that we could get this rebate before the expiration date. Kurt was even ok with my choice of working with our existing fireplace metal surround(glass doors) and mantle to save money. This is the 5th time I have hired B & R to work on my home and I will do it again.

Greg was the man that did our work. He was professional, courteous and personable. Our son was home during the work and there were no issues. I was a little surprised that they were not, more glossy but Kurt explained to us that the new way to do these is with a more matte finish. They were willing to put more coats on but we left it as is. It took 4 days. Greg cleaned up nicely after he was done. They put plastic on the drapes and to block off the rest of the rooms to keep the dust off of everything. Very nice people.

They were really good. Kurt Kuhlmann is the owner. I like them because I didn't think that I got taken. They gave me a 20 percent discount on the tile. I got an immediate response. I liked their workmanship right from the beginning when they did our tile and wood floors 10 or 11 years ago so that's why I went back to them. I will call them for more work.

Very good experience. Kurt gave great detailed information about the process and an accurate description of what to expect from him and what kind of results we would have, and what our options were. I think customer service matters a lot to him, and he was quite patient with our questions and changes. He was accessible as well as present when needed to oversee, and he did a lot of the work himself. We were very pleased with the fact that the potential mess was very well contained, maybe because he used a vacuum system to collect dust. Worked great! Floor is beautiful. Thanks Kurt!

From my first phone call with Kurt he started trouble shooting our project. It was clear from that first phone call that he was a professional who could anticipate where issues could come up at gave solutions from the get go. He came in and fixed the problems left from the previous contractor and the final result was excellent. He was prompt with the first estimate and updated it as the project progressed so there were no surprises at the end. We cannot recommend Kurt and his team highly enough.

There were no issues. They were good to deal and have business with. I would recommend them.

My initial call was returned promptly even though they were on vacation during that week. Carol came out and gave an estimate right away. They had a cancellation and were able to fit us in that same week. Carol was extremely helpful and pleasant to work with. She even showed up on the day of the service and the following day to see how it went and to drop off a floor care kit.The crew that refinished the floors are very good at what they do and the floors look great. They showed up promptly and took measures to minimize the dust in the rest of the house. Carol also sent a follow up note and gift card. Highly recommend B & R Hardwood and Tile!

I found B & R on Angie's List after reading other member's reviews. Kurt was quite flexible about coming out to the house for an evening appointment as my wife and I work during the day. He did a great job of listening to what we wanted to accomplish and offered quite a few suggestions for remodeling our kitchen. He took measurements and notes during our meeting and got back to us in a reasonable amount of time with a detailed quote. We went back and forth on a few items and added others as the project began. I always felt that Kurt was giving us fair prices and the final price was actually lower that his original estimate for a few items related to the cabinets and flooring. During the entire project, Kurt was reliable, courteous, and had kept us informed of timelines. His communication was very helpful and appreciated. Kurt pays a lot of attention to little details and went out of his way to make sure everything is done with craftsmanship and care. I would highly recommend Kurt and will be using him again for a couple of bath remodels.

The most impressive thing about working with Kurt was his conscientious attention to our budget and any concerns we might have had throughout the process. He was specific about when he could start the job, when people would be in our home, and what would be accomplished each day. He was spot-on. The job was completed exactly when he said it would be. He hires nice people, who follow through and even redo when expectations aren't met. All in all, a very good experience.

One word: Awesome. People like Kurt are hard to find in this industry. He was there to answer our questions every step of the way. When he provided the quote, nothing was left in the open. He came up with pricing on the individual tasks so we could choose what we wanted to do now and sometimes what we could do ourselves. This was a stark contrast to one other bid we received, which was just one page. The project went like clockwork, with Kurt providing frequent updates on what is going on. The crew did an awesome job. 99.9% of the hardwood was impeccable and that is a significant feat considering the size of this job. When you need some quality work done, I seriously doubt if you can find anyone who can do a better job than Kurt and his crew. A few may be able to match it, but no one can beat. You may be able to find a cheaper solution, but not a better quality provider. I recommend him for any job where quality is more important than price. Kurt also provided lot of useful inputs whether or not he is doing the work for us. Close your eyes and call him for your next job. You will be happy you did...

Both components of the job were done very well and on the timetable quoted. I rec'd updates frequently, but not overly so. I always felt I could call and get an update at anytime if I wanted. Kurt (owner) really cares about the quality first and foremost and how the craftsmanship reflects back on him and his company. There were no shortcuts taken. The amount (lack thereof) of dust, considering the work done on the floors and ceilings was pretty incredible. I know they take precautions to minimize dust as much as possible and did a great job in doing so. If quality is your first requirement, B&R is a great company to work with.
