About us

D. S. Bahr Construction, Inc is a growing company that stresses high quality workmanship with a personal touch. We specialize in roofing, siding, deck construction and most facets of exterior remodeling. We handle siding replacement in the twin cities, roofing in the twin cities, as well as all twin cities deck construction. We also perform other types of construction and remodeling for the entire twin cities metro area. When i started D. S. Bahr Construction, Inc in 1990, I decided that there were two important standards that I would maintain for my company: high quality & excellent communication. We use only the highest quality roofing, siding and deck materials backed by strong manufacturers. My Minneapolis roofing contractors know that every job must pass my high standards for quality work. You won't find a deck builder in the twin cities that takes more pride in their quality workmanship. Communication - as a home owner myself, i understand that there's nothing more frustrating than waiting for answers and call backs from companies i need service from. At D. S. Bahr Construction, we guarantee that we'll answer all your questions in a timely fashion. No more waiting indefinitely for a call back to get a bid for decks in St. Paul or roofing in Minneapolis. No more playing "phone tag" when you need answers about house siding in the twin cities. As president of D. S. Bahr Construction, I'm still hands-on and in the field. If you contract us to handle your remodeling and construction needs, you'll always have a link to the owner and president of the company. Please include a contact phone number when emailing for estimates. Award winning.

The experience was excellent. He was very professional and on time. He gave a very competitive bid, and his crew was professional and clean. They were done on time, and they picked up and left everything in perfect condition.
Description of Work: They replaced our shingles and that is all we hired them to do.

Bahr came out and gave me a bid on the work. It came out right on the money. They first repaired a flat roof which I suspected was the source of a leak. Turned out it was the source of a leak but not the only leak. They then did the main roof and found the other leak. They did the main roof in the winter(December). These guys were very efficient, worked through cold weather and most important, have solved my leak problem. I was disappointed with the cleanup however. I found staples and shingles all over the yard. They even left a piece of equipment behind. Probably more difficult with the snow but it was a real mess this spring when I did the yard cleanup.
Description of Work: Installed membrane on a troublesome flat-room and re-shingled the main roof.

The workers were professional and prompt. The owner is great. They are fairly priced and did exactly what they said. They knew all of the regulations.
Description of Work: He fully re-roofed the roof on the garage and the entire house. He tore off the old roof and hauled it away. They do sheathing and weather board shield. They put in new valleys.

We now have a bigger problem with drainage than we did before Bahr came. Rainwater now rises above the deck (see photo) and stairs are crooked and have less usable tread. 2. The new railings cut 6 inches of usable tread from each step because each railing base is 3 inches wide. Also, the bottom of the railing is not parallel to the slope of the steps. (see photo) On each side of each step, and the bottom of the railing sections is not parallel to the slope of the joists supporting the steps from deck to grade level. 3. Water on two occasions has leaked from upper deck through the new lower porch ceiling, staining it. Further complaints: 4. They started work before we returned home from a vacation despite promise not to. 5. New and old materials were strewn in front and back yards for days in the rain and mud created by crew. 6. This perhaps accounts for warped new screen door which doesn't fit in its jamb and the damaged beadboard ceiling. 7. Three members of the crew did little but smoke, spit and give each other the finger for days while two others did the work. The work atmosphere was more like guys putting up a hunting shack for cases of beer than professional carpentry. We were later told these brothers had been fired. Why were they hired? The project took 2 weeks instead of one (see above). 8. When I complained about the stairs looking like something from hillbilly hollow, Miles, the supervisor said, "If you don't specifically say you want the stairs to be straight, we assume it will be all right if they aren't." April 21, 2008.
Description of Work: We had two goals: Structural: to improve drainage from a flat roof with a deck on it where rain water would collect for weeks under the deck boards over our screen porch and to rebuild a staircase from kitchen deck to grade level for better stability. Appearance: to replace old wood railings, deck boards, screen on lower porch and its door with metal railings, Timber Tech and new screen and door. To add a beadboard ceiling in screen porch (under the upper, open deck).

Response from D S Bahr Construction Inc
Our company, D.S. Bahr Construction, Inc., feels the need to respond to this very well written complaint, by the homeowner. Unfortunately, the letter has several fabrications within it. I will address these as I comment on each section. Description of Work: The bid states: Deck repair upper and lower deck: 1. Remove decking and railing from upper and lower deck. Remove screen and framing from screen porch. 2. Install new 2”x4” treated floor joists to upper deck. 3. Install 5/4”x6” Timbertech Twinplank decking to upper, lower, and staircase (screw down). 4. Reframe (cedar) screen porch to allow screen. 5. Install Probuilt alum. railing (picket) to upper deck, lower deck and staircase, replace one 6x6 post. 6. Install alum. screen to screen porch and install cedar trim to exterior. 7. Clean and remove debris related to work. 8. 5 year warranty on all workmanship. 9. Labor, skills, materials and permit included. Twelve thousand three hundred forty dollars ($12,340.00) *Install pine bead ceiling to porch $480.00. *Siding repair additional @ $50.00 per man hour + materials. The customer complains of having two goals. Structural goals- 1. Flat roof drainage- the above bid does not include any work to be performed on the flat roof. 2. Rebuild a staircase- The above bid does not include rebuilding a staircase, only to install new decking and railing to existing staircase. Appearance goals- All of the work described was bid for and completed. Customer Comments / Contractor Reply: 1. Flat roof drainage issues-No work was ever bid for, or completed that would affect the water drainage on the flat roof. 2. Narrowing of steps-The homeowner picked out the specific type of railing, which was a top mounted style. The homeowner expressed his unhappiness with the finished appearance. We offered to rebuild the staircase at a nominal fee. He refused. 3. Flat roof leaking-Once again, no work was ever bid for, or completed on the flat roof. Our company did attempt to find a problem to correct four times, at no expense to the homeowner. (You’re welcome) 4. Work started early- Work was started one day early. Usually, contractors get complaints when they are late! 5. Messy yard- Unfortunately, work site can become messy. However, they are always cleaned up upon completion. 6. Warped screen door and damaged beadboard ceiling- The homeowner attributes this to the leaking roofing in comment number three. Also, screen doors will warp if never painted. It is raw wood. Owner never painted and door was repaired by us.. 7. Poor crew conduct- This was a brand new crew. Once the homeowner informed the supervisor of the behavior, they were immediately fired and replaced with a familiar crew... This accounts for the delay in job completion. 8. Appearance of stairs- Supports were installed under staircase to straighten, at no cost. Customer did not like appearance of support posts (commonly used). We were asked to remove them, which we did. Offered to rebuild staircase at a nominal cost. Customer refused. This customer states, “We would like a refund of $3,000.00 to hire someone else to remove the crooked stairs and build new ones and to fix the deck so it no longer collects water rather than drains it.” I would like to let the homeowner know that no matter how much work is done on the deck of your flat roof, it will not affect the water drainage of the flat roof, itself. Also, we offered to rebuild the steps on several occations and the homeowner refused. David S. Bahr, President D.S. Bahr Construction, Inc.

They are very professional and were on time. David is the one that came out and gave the bid. He made sure everything was done accurate and complete. I was very pleased with them. On the price they were about ten percent less than most
Description of Work: They replaced the roof of my home. The roof was damaged from a storm about a year ago. It took them one day to tear off the old roof, put on the new roof, and clean up.

It took him 6-7 weeks after I agreed to get the services completed to start the work so I had to have trash bags to protect my furniture and floors from the rain. He completed the work on the roof, but said he would call back in the spring to do the interior ceiling repairs so that the ceiling would dry out during the winter. He never called in the spring so I called him this week and he said he didn't remember the work. I questioned him if he keeps track of work performed and he said that he had thousands of papers. He ended up calling later on that evening and left a message stating that he found the proposal for the interior work and he would send a new one to me. I received the new proposal with a sticky note stating that since the old proposal for the interior work was not signed I wrote up a new one. I called him back and stated that I have the written proposal for the interior work for him to see and that it was signed with the price of $436 to complete the interior work and the new proposals price was $760. David Bahr's response is untruthful, as he was when I worked with him. The sheetrock repair quote was signed by David S. Bahr and dated, with verbal instructions by Mr. Bahr to call back "in the spring" for the repair to let the area dry out with the heat over the winter.. Since I contacted Mr. Bahr about the leak in September and he had someone come out in the evening in the dark in the pouring rain to repair it about six weeks later, contacting him in late May was within the time frame he instructed to call me back in. If Mr. Bahr had written on the signed bid that costs would be higher in the spring at the time he instructed me to call him back, that would have at least been considerate and good customer service. When the city inspector had to inspect my new roof two years ago, he told Mr. Bahr he had to be there to explain how he fixed the chimney leak. When the inspector went up and looked at the work D S Bahr Construction had done for me he made him do it over correctly and told me never to use his company again. This can be confirmed with the City of Eden Prairie. This part was taken out of my report the first time I made my report. It needs to be in the report since all of D S Bahr's A+ ratings mean nothing to some of us because of things like this. After I told other roofers about his instructions, they said that would never have had me wait until spring to fix the sheetrock. It appears Mr. Bahr instructed this in order to make more money.
Description of Work: Came out in the fall and gave me a verbal quote for roof repairs and also interior repairs. I received the proposal in the mail and it was almost twice as much as he verbally quoted me in the fall. I ended up using him for the repairs because he was the only one able to complete the service in time.

WE WERE CONTRACTED TO REPAIR THIS CUSTOMER'S LEAKING ROOF, INSTALLED BY A DIFFERENT COMPANY. SHE HAD OTHER COMPANIES OUT TO INVESTIGATE THE LEAK, WITHOUT SUCCESS. WE WERE ABLE TO FIND AND REPAIR THE LEAK WITHIN THE AGREED UPON TIME FRAME. THE SHEETROCK REPAIR WAS AN UNSIGNED SECONDARY ESTIMATE. THE CUSTOMER CONTACTED US 8 MONTHS AFTER THE SUCCESSFUL ROOF REPAIR WAS COMPLETED, REQUESTING THE SHEETROCK REPAIR. DUE TO MATERIAL, FUEL AND LABOR INCREASES, THE ESTIMATE WAS REWRITTEN TO REFLECT THE INCREASED COSTS. OUR PROPOSALS ARE CLEARLY MARKED THAT THEY ARE GOOD FOR 60 DAYS. I'M SORRY THAT THIS CUSTOMER WAS UNABLE TO UNDERSTAND THAT COSTS DID RISE OVER THE EIGHT MONTH PERIOD. WE WERE WILLING TO DO THE WORK, BUT NOT AT THE PRICE QUOTED EIGHT MONTHS EARLIER. DAVID S. Dave has some of the best communication in town. Even if you have to leave a message, he always returns calls quickly. The work was done quickly and well. We did have some minor issues with damage of landscaping, but Dave addressed them quickly and throughly and we were satisfied with the resolution. The workers were pleasant and were always on time and professional. There were no hidden charges and the final cost was less than the estimate. I would hire Dave again for any construction needs.
Description of Work: Performed a complete re-roof job. He removed 3 layers of old shingles, installed beautiful 30-year shingles, new gutters and leaf guard. Also replaced a rotting soffit over the front entry. Work also included ordering a work permit and ordering and removing dumpster. The work was done in a day and a half. Dumpster and materials showed up Monday morning, work was finished Tuesday afternoon and dumpster was removed Wednesday morning.

This is a follow-up to a roof install completed 3 years ago by Dave's crew. At the time I was satisfied with price, quality of work and timeliness of completion. Now for the follow-up. Recently we sold our house. The painter accidentally tore a few shingles on the gable end of the garage with his lift. Most of our household receipts were already packed and I couldn't find the record of the brand or color name for our shingles. I called D. S. Barr Construction and left a message. Dave called back within minutes and said he would check his records. Less than five minutes later he called back with not only the brand and color name of the shingle but also he had located a bundle of the discontinued shingle at a supplier in Minneapolis. This speaks to the quality of customer service provided by Dave. Every homeowner should know that this quality of service still exists in D. S. Barr Construction! I know who will be doing my next roof when it needs it. Thank you Dave.

The crew was very nice and prompt. A few minor problems arose (noted above) and were taken care of without any intervention from us. The crew actually ended up making the stairs for the deck wider (which looks better) and the deck itself a bit wider because it just looked better that way. There was no extra cost for this and they consulted with me before they altered the plan. This was a pleasant experience and we have a great new deck.
Description of Work: We had recently used DS Bahr to replace our roofing and were very pleased. This job was to replace a small worn out elevated cedar deck with a much larger composite deck. I had already came up with a design, but Dave suggested an alternative design which was much better. The work was done fast and without incident. Deck looks great. Afterwards the city inspector insisted that we have an outdoor light at the bottom of the stairs (none of our neighbors needed that). Dave brought out an electrician and wired up and installed the fixture without any additional cost (except for the fixture we picked out), even though this wasn't in the original contract we signed. The inspector also insisted on enlarging the lower pad at the bottom of the steps by about 1", which required a lot of work by the crew, but they did it without complaint to please the inspector. We intend to have Dave back out to do additional projects.

Everything went fine. However, there was one small change, which added about $1500 to our overall price. I had first contracted for re-siding only three sides of our home, as the the fourth side (the north side) was in pretty good shape. The original siding was 16 inch shingles, with a 12-inch reveal. When the workers started taking off the original siding, David Bahr called me to advise that the process for re-installing the same 12-inch reveal would involve additional shingles as an "underlay" so that the overlap would be complete. I had to choose between adding about $2500 for these extra shingles, OR choose to re-side the whole house with a 7-inch reveal, which would add fewer shingles, but require more labor, for $1500. I chose the latter. The work continued apace, and the job was finished in 1 and 1/2 days, as promised. The work was very high quality, and the workers really knew what they were doing. It looks great.
Description of Work: DS Bahr re-sided all four sides of our 1948 rambler home in Highland Park, St. Paul. They used cedar siding, very similar to the original materials used in 1948.

I called Bahr because I saw a spot on my upstairs ceiling and thought I needed a new roof. Dave came out the next day, checked my roof as best he could considering it was covered with snow, stuck his head in my attic saw it had lots of moisture. He gave me ideas on how to reduce the moisture, such as lower my humidifier which is connected to the furnace and get my bathroom fan vented properly which it wasn't. He seems to be knowledgeable and is very nice to work with. How nice that I don't need a new roof, but when I do, I will call him.

Dave Bahr came to our house within a day of my first contact with him on 10/22/07. He sent a proposal within a couple of days. We re-negotiated a payment plan of 1/3,1/3 and 1/3 - which he was very flexible about. He began work on January 28 - a very warm day by Minnesota standards. A very large crew worked steadily all day to make progress during the warm day. We were very impressed. Unfortunately the 40 degree day was followed by several below zero days and worked the work was put on hold - which was totally understandable. The crew returned two days later and just kept going. They arrived early, left late and worked on Saturday. All of the work was completed within a week and a half. We were out of town when the workers left. We arrived home to a clean job site and incredible workmanship - we absolutely love it!

Dave Bahr, was here the day they started and was out to check on the workers during the work. He got back in touch with me if I had any questions so that was a big difference with me.
