Scott kept in contact with me from the first call, including warning me that he may be late due to traffic. He was professional, courteous, confirmed what needed to be done, used his time well, did a great job, and charged a fair amount. I would definitely call him again.
Description of Work: Scott first repaired the sheetrock in the skylight area of the bathroom. While that was drying, he removed tiles from the bathtub surround near the faucet, cleaned and scraped behind them, cleaned the wall, and retiled that area. Old grout was removed and new grout was used. When the plaster was dry, he painted the wood trim around the skylight and began repainting the walls in that area. He stopped to show me that the paint I had given him did not match. In checking, I found the color that was used on the lower walls. We decided to use that. He finished, sealed the grout on the floor tile molding, and caulked the completed tub repair job.

Scott is easy going but thorough, he took care of the removal, all the permitting and the construction and we were very happy with the final product. He was a real pleasure to work with. Overall I give him high marks. I only had three concerns: Scott used Craig's List to have the old deck removed which made us feel uncomfortable, but he was present during the removal, supervising the stranger who was on our property. He says it saved us a few hundred dollars in costs for a dumpster, so we appreciated that! Scott and his helper built the deck in about a week. Scott's helper seemed more experienced than Scott did so when his helper wasn't available for three of the five work days we took notice. Still, Scott did a nice job overall. There are a couple of cuts that seem less than perfect, but most of the work is excellent. The two weird cuts are the reason we gave him a B. As for price, we paid $5400 for a 12 x 8 deck in cedar colored pressure treated lumber with metal ballusters. That price seemed really high at the beginning, but we didn't do a price comparison, and decided to use him based on his positive reviews on Angie's List. In the end, friends we asked seemed to think the price was right on target. We'd definitely use Scott again in the future.
Description of Work: Scott removed old deck and built new deck following almost the same dimensions.

Scott was very responsive. Within two days of my calling him, he came and did the estimate. At that meeting he arrived on time (calling to confirm before arriving). He asked good questions, offered good options and provided an accurate estimate. I was getting my home ready to put on the market, and Scott was able to fit in the work the following week. Scott's time estimate and cost estimate were both spot on. The quality of his work was excellent - exactly what I wanted. He was also very careful of my property and cleaned up everything when he was done. I will definitely call him again if I have additional needs, and I recommend him without hesitation.

The one door entry closet was not functional or being utilized to its potential. We called Scott to come out and see the space to ensure our vision of sliding doors would work. He was very knowledgeable and helped us to identify options for updating the closet. After our initial meeting, Scott provided us with an estimate in a very timely manner. Before purchasing the new closet doors, we emailed photos of some door options to Scott and he verified what would work best. By doing this, it ensured we were buying the correct doors and materials. Scott completed the work quickly and with great quality. We love the new closet!

We would use Scott again should the need arise.
Description of Work: Scott installed a ceiling fan and a bathroom faucet in our condo and he did a nice job. He arrived on time, completed the work promptly, and seemed like a nice guy. Charged $150 to install a ceiling fan in our bedroom, which I thought was a bit high, but he did a great job with a huge, difficult to install fan. Charged $60 to install the faucet in our tiny bathroom, which I thought was fair.

Scott's bid was much more reasonable for the job than the 5-6 other handymen and fence repair companies I had do estimates (in fact it was less than HALF of the highest ones!) He explained what steps would need to be taken, and invited me to do any of the work I wanted to do on my own, and said he would help out wherever I didn't want to do it, all the way up to the entire job. However, he had done such a good job explaining the simple steps to be taken that I went from not having a clue how to do such a job to feeling comfortable digging in without him - and before long I had the whole job done myself. (I offered to pay him for his consultation, without which I'd never have gotten the project done myself, but he declined.) I may not have had him do any work this time, but I have no doubt that I've found the handyman I'll want to use for any future projects that come my way. I would definitely recommend Nicely Dunn to anyone.

Scott did a fantastic job. We had to cancel the first appointment, and he was the one that called me back to confirm the second appointment. He also stopped by before doing the work to see what needed to be done, and to give me an estimate of cost and time to do the work. He arrived on time, the estimate matched the cost of the work, and he was done in the time frame that he indicated. He was courteous, respective, and professional. He did a fantastic job, and I will be hiring him again. I have also recommended him to some friends.

Squirrels had eaten a hole in a difficult-to-access corner of my roof and were running around my attic. Scott came out, provided an acceptable estimate to patch the hole and told me to call him once I was sure all of the squirrels were out of the attic (another service guy was working on trapping the squirrels and releasing them elsewhere). I called Scott a couple days later to green-light the work and he was out the next day to take care of everything. He built out a well-designed patch to match the rest of the house then applied the same technique on the other side of the roof to balance out the overall look.
Description of Work: I had a hole in my roof where squirrels were getting in to my attic. The hole was too big to patch and required some metal sheeting to cover the hole and to prevent the squirrels from eating their way back in.

I firstly met with Scott and we discussed the overall scope of the job, city permit needs and various concept possibilities and other aspects of the job. He explained that he was planning to bring in an associate (*Justin Monette - see submission on his role) for the wheelchair ramp portion, as this would be best done as a two person task. We three next met to finalize details of installation, design, city permit and payment. Upon completion of the design Scott obtained the city permit, and materials were also purchased. After some (critical to the timing aspect) home shop pre-framing work, Scott and Justin installed and completed the ramp over two and a half days, in time for the "imposed" deadline. All in all, it is a "functional work of art" - I couldn't be happier with it. Also, the bathroom upgrades, including a couple of "oops, I forgot this" items, were completed at the same time. Scott's skills, work ethic and professionalism exceeded any expectation that I had. Actually, I was sad to see them go when the job was done. This year, in 2010, I hope again to procure Scott's services for some other work at our house...."two thumbs up !"
Description of Work: With my wife and I needing to take over care for my elderly, and handicapped, mother, we needed a wheelchair ramp designed, built and installed. We also needed the downstairs bathroom converted for handicap (toilet, gripping bars) capability. And, due to "family pressures", we needed this done on a timetable.

Everything went great. Scott responded quickly to our request for information, and came out and gave us an estimate. We felt the price was reasonable and he had good ideas for our space. When he came out to do the work, he really went above and beyond by explaining everything necessary to install the new appliance ourselves. The cabinet looks good and we are thrilled with our kitchen update. We'd definitely hire Nicely Dunn again.

We needed not just a handrail but a complete banister for our basement stairs in order to meet city code requirements. Scott is reliable and skilled. I plan on calling him in the future for any handy man work we have.
Description of Work: Scott has helped us out on two occassions. Last fall I asked him to figure out a way to enclose the open risers on the staircase leading to our basement. Another handyman had previously told us they would have to be replaced and quoted us over two times what Scott charged to enclose them. He spent the time figuring out a way to do it that was efficient and attractive. Because they are basement stairs, I was much more comfortable going with the quick fix as opposed to replacement. Scott did a good job and when I needed a door replaced this summer, I called Scott to take care of it. My timing was difficult, but Scott remained flexible and came out when I needed him to. We also had some facia and trim that needed replacing and Scott graciously agreed to take care of them while he was there. I find his prices reasonable, and him to be very easy to work with. I have left him in my home while I was out and felt very comfortable doing so.

Scott responded promptly to my Angie's list inquiry, stuck with me through my changes in plans, gave valuable input on the project, was flexible with modifications, finished the project when he said he would, remained on budget, and was thoroughly professional but friendly throughout. I plan to use him again.
Description of Work: Scott painted two bedrooms, scrapped off the popcorn ceilings on both and refinished/painted them so they are now flat ceilings. He also moved furniture from room to room, between the basement and the second floor, and helped with drywall repair.I bought the paint for the walls, but Scott provided the materials for the ceilings.

Scott is definitely someone I will work with again and again. He knows a lot about a wide variety of projects, tells you when he doesn't know, and brings in specialists when necessary. He offered a lot of advice on other projects I was doing myself and was very flexible about letting me try things myself and then fixing my errors when I got in over my head. I felt like I had a real partner to work with. His pricing was reasonable, even on add-ons to the project where some people try to take advantage.
