Kaufman Roofing has been in business since 1930, working in the Twin Cities and surrounding neighborhood. With the peculiar nuances affecting roofs in the Twin Cities; varying roof types (slate, tile, wood shakes, metal, & flat), harsh weather conditions, and seasonal extremes, our experience is invaluable. Our philosophy hasn't changed since we started doing roofs in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and the surrounding areas nearly a century ago.
They were excellent. I'd highly recommend them to anyone. They were very fair-priced. They do a good. They respond. They're very polite and professional. Kaufman work with GE Capital and they do all the application right there in front of you.
Description of Work: Kaufman Roofing is going to be doing my roof in about two weeks. They're going to take out two layers of shingles that are existing on the roof. There are two skylights on the roof. One opens up in the living room and one in the bathroom. There are some rotted wood around that they're going to repair. They're going to install two new deluxe skylights. Also, they're going to look around just to make sure there's any other damage.

I had replaced a roof about a 1 year 1/2 of continuous problems with their refusal to come out. I have been trying to reach them several times with no call backs. I had to go to another company to get the roof repaired and had to turn it into my insurance company. Now my insurance company is going after theirs. Basically the issue was with the rubber layer. one workers dropped something to put a gash in the rubber portion of the shingle roof. Which caused a leak and Kaufman roofing would never come out to look for the leak. They denied that there could be a leak on the roof they replaced. with a detail inspection after a year of leakage, the gash was found by another company. The rotten wood was replaced and the roof was repaired by the new company. Tom Kaufman would not come out to look at the roof but refused to give me the name of his insurance company. He also stated they were not insured but I did found out they were. I would not recommend them to others. The company response leaves much to be desired as I made many calls to them which were not mentioned in their commentary. Many of my calls, later on, to the office were transferred to Tom?s voice mail and were never returned. A portion of the roof was not done in shingles, but in rubber which became the problem. Also I paid extra for many more layers of Ice and Water Shield far beyond the code requirement. It is this area that leaked into an interior 2nd floor wall, then into an interior window, then down the wall to the 1st floor and ceiling damaging parts of 2 floors. Initially, Tom said it was the ice dam, then the excuse was the misuse of heat cables, and later in the summertime, his excuse for the leak was condensation. This shows he was called multiple times over a period of time but always blamed something else, and this was while he looked at the roof from the ground, and while the true cause was from the puncture his men made during the installation of the rubber portion of the roof that was not shingled. Sad, but it took short of 2 years of complaining, then another roofer actually went on the roof and found the gash. Since that repair, along with the needed repair of the rotted wood, the roof no longer leaks. Separately, another example of sloppy work, was the covering over of an attic roof vent. One of the calls earlier on to Tom Kaufman was to tell him that one of the vents installed in the roof that I could see in the attic was covered with felt, and that his team forgot to uncover at least one of the vents I could see ? who knows how many others are non functional? He would not believe it at first, but finally came out to see it and was amazed. Towards the end Tom would no longer accept or return calls to me and I finally did reach his father, Bob. I called because of the need to contact his insurance company which Tom said his company had none. When pushed, Bob finally admitted they did have insurance and this is being submitted to them. I do have pictures of the covered vent, the area of the puncture with close ups and sloppiness during the progress of the work with nails strewn all about my yard and in the plants that I had to stand and push them into cleaning up.
Description of Work: I had hired them to re-roof my home.

Response from Kaufman Sheet Metal & Roofing Inc
The member’s accusation, we claimed not to have insurance, is absurd; it is listed on all our advertisements, business cards, website, and we always provide a certificate of insurance upon request. The work we did for this member was done in November of 2010; he made us aware of a leak in January 2011, approximately 2 months following the work we preformed for him. As soon as he made us aware of a leak, Tom Kaufman immediately went to the property to inspect the leak. He was using his heat cables improperly and a massive ice dam had formed on his roof. Tom showed him the proper way to use his heat cables and we removed snow and ice from his roof, thus stopping the leak. We did not hear from him until a year later, in November of 2011, when he hired us to install downspouts on the property, which we did; he never mentioned anything about a leak. A few months later we heard from him again, this time he called Tom Kaufman and they had a face-to-face meeting. In this meeting, not only did he ask Tom do give him a bid for another flat roof on a different property, but he asked Tom for a verbal bid to have skylights installed on his personal roof. It was a friendly meeting, where the two of them shook hands upon its conclusion. The member did not express any concerns in his meeting with Tom Kaufman, and again he did not mention anything of a leak. Subsequently, since Tom and his face-to-face meeting, he has had other contractors work on his roof. A few years later, he sends us a picture of someone sticking a screwdriver in a puncture of his flat roof, after other contractors have worked on the roof. Yet, he hired us to do more work on the property, asked us to give an estimate for another flat roof, wanted a bid for skylights on his personal home and met with his estimator face to face; all this and he never mentioned anything of a leak. It is not our place to speculate his motives; we will let you come to your own conclusion. What we do know is this: Kaufman Roofing has been in business since 1930 and we stand behind our reputation.

I told them specifically to call before coming out, because I wanted to make sure I was around when they arrived. They never did. The Kaufmen company SUBCONTRACTS, so you never really know what kind of service you are going to get until its done. The truly sad part is I went with them because they are a neighborhood favorite, because their office is in the neighborhood. However, they do not inspect the work of the subcontractors and, while the subcontractors were removing my old balcony rooftop, some debris must have fallen against the house and punctured my steel siding. I had a golf-ball sized hole in my siding. It took several phone calls, including saying I would not pay the invoice until it was repaired, for them to actually take notice and send an actual kaufmen representative out. When he saw it, they were good about repairing it (even though they could not find siding that matched the texture exactly). When I contracted them to do the ridge vent, again they did not call and merely showed up, leaving trim along my roof unsecured and poking out away from the house. To this day the trim is at the peak of my house, still poking out like an antenna. By this time I simply chalked it up as a neighborhood family company thinking they can ride on the reputation of the name while skating thru with poor quality work. I will never use them again.
Description of Work: I contracted them to repair my back balcony porch as well as put a ridge vent in my rooftop.

Response from Kaufman Sheet Metal & Roofing Inc
Although this complaint was for services rendered over 5 years ago, we take it seriously and appreciate the opportunity to respond to its unscrupulous claims. To make the claim: “ The Kaufmen (misspelled) company Subcontracts, so you never truly know what kind of service you are going to get…” is complete conjecture and the statement, “…they don not inspect the work of the subcontractors…” is completely false and borders on slander. Kaufman Roofing uses its own employees along with subcontractors. Our subcontractors are required to meet the manufacturers’ certifications of the products we use in conjunction with meeting our rigorous standards, before they are placed on any job. We have been using the same subcontractors for the past 8 years and never do we bring on a subcontracting crew without it first meeting the requirements imposed by us. Each one of our jobs, whether done by a Kaufman Roofing employee or one of our subcontractors, is inspected. Kaufman Roofing is a family owned and has been in business in the Twin Cities since 1930. The Owner, Bob Kaufman, takes the reputation of his name seriously; he leaves no wiggle room with his employees and his subcontractors on his demand for quality workmanship.

Badly, as described above. The roof is on and has not failed in the six months it's been up, so that's good, but the customer service and follow up was bad.
Description of Work: Kaufman replaced a small part of my roof that needed new insulation underneath due to ice dams. They were recommended by the insulation company. Although they were in contact with the insulation company they were not on time, not even close. They promised to have the work done in one day, during the day. They ended up starting late enough that they were working during dinnertime, which required having the skylight out and making for a cold and uncomfortable family dinner. Construction material blew into our dining room while we ate. It ended up taking two days. They left cigarette butts and garbage in our yard. I'm still finding it over six months later. They cracked the frame of the skylight and whined about fixing it. They also got tar smudge or something on the glass of the skylight. They did the least amount of work possible to make it look less bad. Update to follow up to contractor's response: I know it was their employees smoking and throwing cigarette butts on the ground because I watched them do it. Also the comment about how they "promptly commenced" their portion of the job after hearing from the insulation company is a flat out lie. I spoke with the insulation company shortly after they called Kaufman to say they were ready and it was many hours before they showed up.

Response from Kaufman Sheet Metal & Roofing Inc
On this project we were working in conjunction with insulation company and were unable to move forward with our portion of the work until the insulation company had finished its portion. We were at the mercy of the insulation company on when we could start this job. On the same afternoon the insulation company gave us the go ahead, we promptly commenced to do our portion of the job. One thing we have learned in our over 80 years of being in business is to never promise the exact time it will take to do a job from start to finish; inevitably we run into something unexpected. It is our policy to only give our customers a “Best-guess” approximation on how long a job will take. In this particular case we were unable to finish the work that day, so we continued to work on the project to a point where we could properly close off the roof and ensure it would be watertight through the night. Unfortunately, in order to assure the roof would be watertight our work ran into the evening. We weren’t the only contractor working on this house during this time frame; therefore it is impossible to verify if the cigarette butts originated from our workers. Our employees are well aware of our policy, which doesn’t allow them to smoke onsite, and when confronted they assured us they were not smoking. While removing the skylight, there was some minor damage done to the interior drywall of the house. We can see how this could be perceived as a crack to the skylight frame from its appearance, however, the frame of skylight was not cracked. Removing a skylight is a complicated and precise process; it is next to impossible not to have any incidentals. It was explicitly stated in our contract that any incidentals occurring to the interior of the home during this process would not be our responsibility. Although it was not our responsibility, we repaired the minor damage. The smudge on the skylight was an oversight on our part. The same day we were made aware the smudge, our project manager personally went to the job site and removed the smudge.

This work was done in conjunction (although hired separately) with a general contractor in repairing damage from ice damming the previous winter. Scheduling was the primary deficiency. This company was the second recommendation of the general contractor and the initial meeting was with both Dick Kaufman and the general contractor project manager in May. The quote was timely and I was to be called when a start date was set. However, weeks went by without any contact from the company. I finally called them in early July to follow up as I had not had any contact since my deposit check was cashed. The phone receptioninst initially "couldn't find me in their system." It took some time for them to find my job as it was filed under the contractor. I will concede that it was a busy season due to weather and that the initial contact was via the general contractor, however, the general contractor was not contacted about scheduling the work either. I finally was able to speak with the person in charge of scheduling jobs, Grant, who gave me a start date of the "first week in August." I voiced my concern in ensuring the job be done prior to our impending due date for our first baby in September. The August date came and went again without any follow up communication. I again called them and they were open with their being behind schedule. They finally arrived the first week in September, a full two months after the completion of interior work (almost three months after the deposit was paid)--the day we came home from the hospital. After waiting for months to finally get this job done, I did not want to send them away. I included in the initial quote a signed and initialed addendum/request to "inspect and make any needed repair to gutters." When the two-man crew arrived, I pointed out an area of leakage in the gutter above the bay and he stated he would patch it. This did not happen and I ended up patching the area myself after the completion of the job. After the work was done, the clean up was minimal. I found many pieces of plastic packaging, loose screws, nails, and wiring fasteners in the gutters and in the landscaping when I did my fall cleanup/gutter cleaning. They also left a box of additional parts (that I later found out were left for the electrician to finish the connection), but no explanation or communication. They just left. In summary, the work was completed per the specifications of the quote/contract with the exception of the addendum gutter repair. However, due to the problems scheduling, lack of communication/professionalism, and sloppy cleanup, I would not to recommend this company to others.

Tom Kaufman came out on August 15th to give us an estimate on replacing our current roof. He was extremely thorough in my opinion. He spent a good hour on the roof which has several gables and a steep pitch. After an hour he stated that he was going to get an Eagle View Report to give us a more accurate estimate of the project. Unfortunately, his estimate was $1,000.00 over the roofing company we eventually hired. When you are spending over $17,000.00 on a new roof that is something we had to consider seriously in this economy. In the future I would contact this company again. The only thing that seperated them from the contractor we hired was price.
Description of Work: I would consider this company in the future, but that is not a selection on this site. We did have a representative come to our home to give us an estimate on a new roof since our roof was 23 years old and it was time for a replacement.
