We wouldn't trust our lawn or landscaping work to anyone other than Northern Roots. Brian was thorough on his planning, they communicated well throughout the whole process and the crew who did the work was polite, thorough, and did great work. The job was done in a day as planned.

Not all landscaping companies want small jobs like mine. But Brian at Northern Roots responded to my request for a bid by visiting my yard and providing a reasonable bid in just a few days. Once I accepted the bid, they had someone out to lay the pavers and rock, and replace the old, dead bushes in just a couple of days. They did a fine job! And their computer system allowing online payments made the financial end of our transactions a “piece of cake”. Thank you, Brian and Northern Roots, for making this Landscaping project so painless!!!!!

I am so happy with the work that was performed. Brian and his team did an outstanding job! I am enjoying the beautiful flowers and the curb appeal is fantastic. I was kept informed throughout the process. Brian took my suggestions of what I like and made a fantastic and beautiful landscape solution. During the tear out and reconstruction the crew was very respectful of my property and kept the jobsite neat, tidy, and organized. The job came in on time and budget and I have already been telling my friends what a great job they did! The neighbors agree!
Description of Work: My front yard landscaping and huge planter had gotten so overgrown and unmanageable. It looked like the Munsters lived there! I needed a complete gut job to remove all weeds shrubs debris old blocks and edging etc. and start from scratch. The team pulled out all the old down to the dirt, removed everything. Added new concrete bullet edging, landscape fabric, river rock, shrubs and plantings.

I hired Northern Roots for the season, they were expensive but I wanted professionals to avoid the hassle of neighborhood kids that usually need nagging and don’t show up. I should have stuck with the kids. They killed my lawn by never showing up to collect leaves as promised – I will attempt to attach a picture. NOTE: all the other lawns in the picture look great, none of these neighbors hired them. After they promised to do I waited and waited and waited. Here are some direct quote excuses from them: “We need consecutive days of dry weather to get the ground in shape to handle our equipment and for the leaves to not clog up our bagging systems….do not call or email and ask about when we will get to you.” - Skoog the owner to all customers After I told them that in my younger years, I would just go slower or use rakes when wet leaves clogged the mower I was told “at a $65/hr labor rate. I don't think most people want to pay $1,200 for a cleanup” – Brian the sales guy Funny how everyone in my neighborhood got their leaves done themselves or with others while this best equipped company just provided excuses. My neighbor kept asking me to do it for me while I traveled but he is a severely arthritic fellow grandpa so I did not really want him to do. I finally relented - too late for the lawn - he did it in a few hours with just a lawn tractor. I am still scratching my head as to why all the BS instead of finding ways to get the work done. They killed my lawn and now refuse to remedy this – or even apologize. I was only told “sorry things did not work out”-Skoog the owner They did a large expensive landscaping project in spring, which turned out looking good but proved way too difficult. • They insisted I sign contracts on their site – an amateur hour site I couldn’t even log into for months. They will want a credit card pre-registered so they can charge whatever they want. • The sales guy Brian would never write down the plan, just a materials list. Good thing I was there to redirect when the workers made up their own plans, the workers complained this a problem with Brian on all projects. • Upon completion the foreman told me the owner wanted me to pay extra because Brian made some kind of mistake…. in the fixed bid. • Brian’s tree expert also recommended a tree that was very inappropriate, I made the mistake of trusting their competency – the tree is now dying – a mistake that cost me $500 as they refuse to replace it. After this I started to write everything down when I needed work after this, sending to them and getting agreement. All the way down to the detail of which plants to trim, but they still could not manage to do as agreed. Had to nag and get them to return. Delightful. I asked if they could fertilize 4 times during the year, they agreed, then would not show up. I would keep asking for weeks, then months, kept being told I was on the schedule. They only actually showed up one time for the year. This is a situation you won’t want to be in - since they kept promising they would show I could not hire anyone else at risk of killing lawn with double fertilizing. This helped kill the lawn I am sure. The ONLY thing they got right was showing up to mow. But well past when the grass stopped growing – the owner had some simplistic notion his profits doing this were higher than doing the leaves. With the detailing and nagging they think much too highly of themselves to consider they can ever be at fault, the owner is way beyond being just tone deaf to his customers, they said they would only do snowplow work for me from then on. Of course they did not show up for the first snowstorm either. I finally fired them. Instead I hired Elevated Services, Jason showed up promptly for every single every snow after that and did great work. Behaved like an adult too. Just hired them for summer work too. I am at a loss as to how they could have any legitimate positive reviews, or even stay in business, given all this nonsense in a single season. I spent many thousands with them, payed my bills on time, gave them (too much) slack to show up etc. Northern Roots is too pricey with the high rates, minimums, and surprise add-on fees. They proved difficult, misleading, do not do what they promise and did inconstant work. Avoid them and hire someone you can depend on, they will make your life miserable and they might just kill your lawn too.

Response from Northern Roots Lawn Care
Unfortunately [Member Name Removed] is a disgruntled client. For years he was simply a fall cleanup client requesting that we come twice in the Fall, once as the first client on the route and then the very last client of the season. We accommodated this request even when we stopped doing two time cleanups for every other client. He then hired us for lawn care work but instead of adhering to the lawn care program that we have in place for every other client, he insisted on just a spring and fall fertilizer application saying that his lawn doesn't grow in the summer because he doesn't have a sprinkler system. Similarly, he wanted more "on call" lawn mowing instead of being on a regular schedule and cancelled service prematurely in the Fall. Last Fall there was record rain and early snow. We informed Mr [Member Name Removed], along with every client that we were behind (like every other lawn care company) because of the weather. He took this as some sort of personal attack because he emailed (multiple times) trying to gain information and chastising us because apparently our business practices aren't in line with his ideas and we should have some sort of foresight to know all weather conditions beforehand and still somehow miraculously service every client when record rain and early snow occurs. When we informed him that we didn't want to damage his lawn because it couldn't support equipment, he became irate and we informed him the alternative was to put a crew on his lawn with rakes and plastic bags but at an hourly rate he would be paying a ridiculous amount for a cleanup. He became upset that we couldn't get to his lawn on his time frame even though he requested to be last on the list in MN which, as anyone who is familiar with geography and weather would have some idea that perhaps it may snow early and prevent a leaf cleanup. He was not the only client who didn't get a Fall cleanup but definitely the only one in 13 years who has ever pitched a fit to this extreme. We informed him that we would not be "customizing" his lawn Care with mowing and fertilizing at his whim any longer. We have products, packages and schedules specifically designed to professionally maintain our clients lawns. We do not want to put our name on a lawn that is below average. Fertilizing twice a season, zero watering and random mowings is far from optimal care of one's lawn. [Member Name Removed] feels this is unacceptable customer service and that not only he but "every" client must feel the same. I truly believe he feels this way but I would encourage him to entertain the possibility that his narrow scope of lawn care and how to run a lawn care business probably doesn't represent the norm, nor would it lead to any sort of successful business model. [Member Name Removed], not liking that he couldn't demand his own lawn care schedule, fired us and said he'[Member Name Removed] have his neighbor provide the Fall cleanup. Apparently, after firing us, threatening us and berating us, he still expected us to show up to plow his driveway. If we were such a terrible unprofessional company, why did he keep hiring us for more and more work? In regard to his tree, this was part of a $7500 landscape job, which he and his wife loved. I informed him I'm not an arborist, as I do with every client. I provided him a list of trees that would work in the area he wanted a tree planted, provided a link to our supplier who has pictures and descriptions and encouraged him to speak with them. [Member Name Removed] and his wife selected the tree which was properly planted. We also provided a water schedule. As noted he does not have an irrigation system and one of my crew commented on the fact that he saw the tree weeks later, it was bone dry and no sprinkler system was set up to water it. Instead of consulting us with the issue, he received 1 quote from a tree care company who said the tree has a beetle infestation. He emailed us demanding that we pay to have his tree treated every year and used this negative review as a threat, stating if we didn't do as he said, he would give this negative review and it would hurt our business. Well, anyone who took the time to read this and all the other good reviews will probably be able to understand where the problem truly lies. Again, if we were so terrible, why did he remain a client for years, hiring us for more and more services? The fact is, we provided the same level of customer service that we would for anyone else. [Member Name Removed] has simply become accustomed to getting his own way and won't take any responsibility for his own actions when things don't work out the way he expects. It's just sad that someone of his age would act in such a childish manner as to use a negative review as a threat to try to force a small company to give him something for free because he heard the word no.

This company agreed to mow my grass for the first month of a new lawn. The company showed up once, had a bad encounter with my neighbor, tore up my new sod, left chunks of grass that they supposedly picked up, and never mowed the side lawn of my home. I heard nothing from them for six days. I reached back out to them to see when they would be doing the second cut. At that time I was told they wouldn’t return do to the experience they had with my neighbor. FYI - I use Angie’s list for everything. I’ve never given a bad review. This is my first. It’s really hard for me to give a bad review.

You have got to be kidding me!!! This is completely false. You called in a panic wanting us to come and cut your new sod. You told me that this was a one time only cut. We agreed to the terms to do so. A very experienced crew of two team members showed up to cut the lawn, which was very long and had never been cut. During the cutting process some of the grass clippings got on the neighbors lawn, while we were still cutting. The neighbor came out and cursed at my crew members complaining about the grass clippings. My crew lead was polite to her, and started to blow the clippings off of her lawn onto your lawn right away. She then told him she was going to call the police because we were on her lawn. My crew lead called me and I called a manager. We both showed up to help our 2 person crew complete the lawn work. We filled up several bags and loaded the back of the pickup with grass clippings. The lawn looked great when we got done, considering how long the grass was. There were zero clippings on the neighbors lawn when we left. If we were so bad, then why would you call us back to keep cutting the lawn? I explained to you that I was not comfortable cutting your lawn because I was not going to subject my hard working and honest employees to your neighbors threats and behavior towards us. Again, if we did such a bad job then why would you call us back for more work? The work we agreed to was a one time only job and that was it. If we had contracted with you for further mowings from the start, I would have put you on the recurring schedule. This was a one time job. I will and have always taken responsibility if there are issues or we did not perform the work correctly. I am defending my company in this case because we did nothing wrong at all and do not deserve this negative review one bit.

So far things have been fairly good. Things got off to a slow start and this is probably because of lack of spring season. There have been few issues with specific concerns with my lawn but the team has been very good at addressing concerns in a timely manner. Would be nice to have them fix areas of lawn that have issues when they come out which are obvious but it may not be part of the package. Will follow up with review after summer season.

Spoke with Brian about setting up service. First question asked was are we in your service area, answer was yes. Received quote, accepted quote, was told they would try to make it out that week (quote accepted on a Tuesday). The next day I received an email from Emery asking me to confirm service selections which we did. About a week later nothing had happened so I called Emery and was told we were not in there service area. I told Emery the first thing I did was confirm the service area with Brian and I had received and accepted a service quote. Emery's response was he had no idea why Brian would have quoted work not in their service area. Super Service Award? Sound like it to you?

We have a very woody backyard that attracts mosquitos. Northern Roots made our yard accessible to my entire family for the whole summer. In years before treatment, we’d have to stay inside the screen porch. Now we’re outside almost all summer long. As for leaf removal, we have done it by ourselves, and it is SO MUCH MORE WORTH IT for Northern Roots to do it. They do a great job, and it saves us on 3+ weekends of back-breaking labor. This is our second year of service with them, and we’ll be customers next year, too.

I contacted Northern Roots for an estimate to do some light landscaping and landscape bed maintenance. Brian returned my original inquiry the same day, and scheduled an on-site estimate the next day. I had my estimate in writing the following day for a very reasonable cost and accepted to schedule work. Weather issues delayed my work, however when I had a question around scheduling Stacy responded to my inquiry immediately and let me know where I was on the schedule and when to expect the work being done (pending no further weather delays). Everything was completed last week, and I am very impressed with the quality of work and how nice my yard looks now! The folks at Northern Roots did a fantastic job with my shrub and tree removal. I can also tell a noticeable difference in my back yard trees with the amount of trimming that was done. One more nice positive (for me at least) is that payment was rendered through Northern Roots website. My invoice was electronically generated and I paid the same day via credit card. I bring this up I've had service providers still leverage paper invoices and require cash/check payment, so it was a nice additional perk to be able to handle finances electronically. I have more lawn projects to complete and Northern Roots will be the first folks I call. Thank you for a job well done!
