I wanted an estimate before the work was done. Jim said he'd come out and review the project and give me an estimate. I didn't hear back from him. I called the day before the work was scheduled and he said that I'd "fallen through the cracks" and wasn't on the scheudle. He didn't seem to want the job because I wanted an estimate up front.

If you are penciled in for a look-see and I don't get to you for whatever reason within that time frame and I don't hear from you in that time frame I assume you have scheduled other options. I get several calls a week that I respond to and never hear back from...can I rate them with an 'F?' You have to be your own advocate. I schedule first and go to work with the clients who are ready to go. Sorry.

Jim said he didn't do that kind of work, but went above and beyond to call a friend who is a carpenter. He called me back to tell me that his friend would call me tonight. I certainly didn't expect him to be so helpful, especially considering he didn't get any work out of it. What a nice guy! I hope I can use him for some other project some day!

I called Jim because of damage to the garage facia. He did some work for me in 2006 and I was pleased with it then. I had a few small jobs to do in addition to fixing the garage facia as listed above and Jim completed those as well. Jim responded to my call promptly, scheduled the job and appeared as scheduled. He completed the work to my satisfaction in a very reasonable amount of time. He is very pleasant to work with. I called him about three weeks later when something (a raccoon?) pulled out the gutter filter and damaged some shingles on my roof above the gutter. Jim responded promptly and fixed the damage replacing the shingles.
Description of Work: Repaired the garage facia, cleared and flushed the gutters on the house, caulked the west windows, replaced a cedar fence board, adjusted an outside screen door and cleared branches from the telephone line. In response to a separate call in September, he replaced some shingles on the lower part of the roof.

My small animal hospital had many small repair issues that I was unable to complete myself. I looked up Jim on Angie's list and found him to be personable and efficient. The work was completed to my satisfaction and in a timely manner. Jim truly is a handyman but is willing to admit when a job needs to be done by another trade. I will use Jim in the future.

Quality of work was looks good. Jim would not give a fixed bid. He wants to be paid hourly - no limit. That was a huge mistake on my part (as I trusted the other Angie's list ratings that price would be at least reasonable). I had two other bids from other at $500 and $700. Jim's final price came in at $1126. NEVER will I accept an open job work assignment in that he took 2.5 days in what I was told should take 1 day. He lied to me. He agreed to use my Home Depot card so that I could pay directly for materials. Then he decided he was going to use his account and charge me. He said he would give the receipts but didn't. Clearly, don't trust what he says. Last, to me the worst part is that he is extremely unprofessional. I fell very sick (severe pneumonia) the week after this and I told him as soon as I would better I would pay household bills and I was in no shape to do that. I'm sick in bed and he kept sending e-mails and calling to get him money and could care less if I was dying. He acts like a nice guy but he is heartless -- no better than that insurance company trying to collect money from patients at the Emergency waiting room. Totally heartless.

I had posted a response to these charges right away but for some reason it does not appear so I will try again. First of all I'm not a liar as this member contends. At check-out I used my card and passed the discount on to him as I thought he rather spend his card on something other than lumber. I was wrong in doing that and I informed him as soon as I returned to begin the project. He said nothing at the time. The first time I heard about his being upset was when he emailed me about 10 days later. Had he said something that morning I could have had the charges put on his card and there would have been no issue. I sent him an apology for doing that once I knew he was so put out. That information is conviently left out of this odorous post. I told him upfront I had no idea about how long it would take to do the work. I also informend him at least twice why the progress was so slow, but he seems to have no concept of what is involved in labor! As it turned out it was an ordeal as the deck had been nailed w/3 inch galvanized twisted flute nails, making them nearly impossible to remove...the wood would break before the nails would move so each had to be pulled. Also each board had to be cut to fit and the old boards had to have the rotted ends cut off before matching it up with the new one that was installed. Nearly half the deck was repaired. I also had to remove the storm door frame and threshold to install the boards there and also fit a new lift under the storm threshold as it was rotted. I was also working around rain showers and another job. He made his own mistake in not taking the $500 bid....I can't imagine what that job would have looked like. He claims my prices are outrageous....not really, he can't afford me. He did not ask for the receipt. I did not badger him for payment, though payment is usually made as soon as my work is completed. I sent him an email the first week wishing him well when informed he was sick. After a week I sent an email asking when I could expect payment. He sent a childish email in return telling me to check with his wife if I needed the money so badly...at a phone number that was invalid. On Aug 26 I get the email you see here (with some more accusations left out) and for the first time I find out what type of person I'm dealing with. I did not treat him in any other manner than how I treat all my clients. He did send payment...with a unhappy face on the memo line. Why he thinks it is ok for my income stream to be stopped because he is too ill to write a check begs the question what would his reaction be if his check is held up because his company's boss has the sniffles. If he'd have been in ICU....I would have understood. I will let Angie's List members draw their own conclusions in this matter and let my record stand on it's own.

Jim is prompt, clean, and personable. He brings the correct supllies for each day's tasks in his van. In a small house such as ours, he knows to set up outside whenever possible in order to keep mess and noise to a minimum. I am often working from home when he is here, and though he likes to chat he is always professional and keeps the volume down. His rates are average in my research at $45/hour (commute time in the morning will also be charged), yet his work is far above average!
Description of Work: Jim has worked on a number of projects in our home. I usually just keep a list of the various tasks I can't figure out how to do and/or things we don't want to spend our weekends doing! I send my list to him beforehand via email or voicemail, then he confirms and comes prepared with the necessary tools and supplies (if requested, though often I've purchased the supplies myself). He is pretty good about budget constraints as well, and brings me back to reality if something I'm asking for will actually take too many hours/dollars! Most recently he installed four IKEA bookshelves with glass doors, and returned several weeks later to carve in plate grooves so they could be used to display dishes and misc. items. He has also repaired cement in two locations, cut open a sump pump pit/cover (prior owner tiled right over it), removed a satellite dish from the roof, figured out how to hang an antique classroom map, installed additional towels bars...and I'm sure there are more projects that I have forgotten already. Note, he does NOT do electrical or plumbing of any kind - but is very up front about it. For repair items he does not necessarily specialize in, I've found his recommendations to be very reliable and reasonable (needed window pane replacement, exterior door installation, etc.)

I will have Jim back any time I need something done. He is prompt, personable, easy to work with, and doesn't mind me helping out or just letting him do it all. I think his prices for all he did were great.
Description of Work: Jim arrived promptly, at 9:00 A.M. four days. He had explained his rate and what he would be able to do over the phone. When he saw the landscape overgrow, he laughed. It was a jungle and tangle of things that were growing within the Bachman's landscaping put in 17 years ago. He went to work cutting down landscaping, cutting out and digging out the trees, weeds, and "volunteers" that had shown up in the "around the house" landscape. I wanted to work on it too, so he welcomed my participation and we bundled, bagged, and worked together to put over 20 bundles and 15 bags of land waste together the first two days. Those first two days we each worked eight hour days. The next two days, Jim trimmed up all of the bushes, shrubs, and trees, so I could use my riding mower effectively in our yard. He trimmed out all of the dead branches in the pines, cleaned my dryer vent and replaced the flappers on it, power washed my deck, patio, and the siding of our house which was covered with a film of mold. He also cleaned up other "moldy" areas around the perimeter of the house. He then gave me some valuable advice about gutters. My husband was always skeptical of gutters in Minnesota; we always had them in Illinois, but he had heard stories about ice dams. Jim explained that we got mold on the siding because of the lack of gutters and how wet our house stayed. He also pointed out some boards on the front of the house that were not doing well because of water splashing back on them from the driveway; he can replace them though. Now I am finally getting the gutters, and our house looks great!

I responded to a plumbing ad through Angie's List. The person who came did the work, but he was not a plumber and did not have the parts needed for the job. He was able to complete the work because I happened to have the parts. If that hadn't been the case, the cost of this repair would have been even higher.

Jim was fantastic. He was able to come the day after our phone conversation. Showed up on time with business card in hand. We have had a very mild winter this year, but poor Jim was here working in the bitter cold on the roof, and outside for hours. He worked hard and did a great job. I was so impressed that I kept adding to his list. He was here right before Christmas and really helped me get some major things off my list.
Description of Work: Removed cleats on roof that a former contractor left. Installed an outside light, hung pictures, hung a very heavy mirror coat rack, hung a bathroom rack, fixed dryer vent, installed covers on outside electric, picked up a bathroom sink and 6 bags of salt from Home Depot and carried downstairs, put up house numbers..many more things...too long to list, and I can't remember all.

Well, Jim came in, assessed the situation, suggested we open the dryer vent from inside the unfinished basement, and take a look from the inside. That exercise revealed that there was clogging at the outside opening of the vent. Jim cleaned up the clog and used his specialized snake devise (with nylon fibers) to run through the pipe by pulling the dryer out and using that hole. In the end, he slid the dryer back after refitting the joint, finished up the re-sealing of the dryer vent joint close to the siding and got everything good to go again.I really appreciated his professionlism, his timeliness and the happy attitude which he brings to the job. I can't imagine a handyman being more courteous and happy to be doing what he does as Jim is.
Description of Work: I engaged Jim after an earlier duct cleaning crew was not able to locate the dryer vent opening under a close to ground/impossible to crawl under deck. They had suspected that somehow the deck builder may have sealed the dryer vent opening on accident. The clothes were not drying and there was back-feed of lint etc in the laundry room inside the house. A drill in the outgoing pipe close to the dryer indicated it was clean as a whistle. The mystery deepens. Why is the dryer not expelling air to the outside?

My house dates from 1888. Needless to say, it needs work on a regular basis. I had a problem window off the back side of the house where the outside framing was rotting out. I have had different people put "cosmetic bandaids" on it over the last 20 years--it was still in need of proper repair. As per my normal style, I procrastinated until the weather was barely warm enough. Jim still fit me in. He removed the soft wood, stripped away everything to the original wood siding, (discovering that the old combination windows were no longer screwed in to anything in the process), stopped the dry rot that was going on and causing the on-going problem. He put in good wood, reattached my old combinations, caulked everything completely, and put on a shellac-based primer. It is now draft proof and pest-proof. In between the drying time for caulk and paint, he cleaned a problem gutter on my second story, cutting away tree branches that adding to the problem. He wasted no time what so ever. I know I got my money's worth. And he answered all my questions cheerfully and fully while he was working. I will definitely be using him again next year.
