+ -1 moreOur gas water heater died on a Friday morning. We called a plumber for a new one which they said they could put in that day. Plumber came out and said there was no way to vent the gas heater due to changes in codes. I called Total Electric, explained the problem and they said they could come out Monday morning. He pulled all the permits and showed up right on time. We had had an electric clothes dryer before (switched to gas) so he was able to move the wiring, install a fuse box just for the heater and set it up so when the plumbers came, they were in and out in about an hour. We were very pleased with the work and their punctuality. About 5 years ago, they added wiring to our kitchen for a built in microwave and did a great job that time also. We consider Total Electric our electricians now.
Description of Work: Rewired out basement for a electric water heater. This required removing some older wiring and adding a new switch box for the heater. Pulled all the permits and did a very clean and professional job.

He was very professional and knowledgeable. When I asked him what I owed him, he said he didn't really do much. There would be no charge. We will recommend Total Electric to anyone we know needing an electrician. Further, if we every need more extensive work done, we will call Jim. He has earned our trust and respect.

Jim didn't try to cut corners, two examples: 1) the main wire he received was aluminum; he had the electrical supply company exchange it with copper (less likely to degrade?), 2. he offset the electrical switch and outlets in the unfinished garage so they won't have to be shifted if I install sheetrock. Anyway, I went with Jim because he is a straight shooter, no B.S., and he is a competent professional. I have had a couple other electricians over to do small projects, but they didn't match Total Electric's standards.
Description of Work: Electrical upgrade from 60amp to 200amp service. I dug a trench from garage to house (15 feet) my suggestion. Jim electrified the new garage: three inside outlets, one outside, put in two lights inside and hung two new outside fixtures and installed one outside outlet. He installed two breaker boxes: one in the garage and one in the basement (previously a gaggle of five fuse boxes). He installed a mast at the back of the garage to receive the wires from the telephone pole, ran wire from the mast through the garage attic and down and into pvc conduit that ran from the corner of the garage through the trench and into the basement. He put in three pvc conduits in the trench: a 2" for the main power supply, two 1" conduits: one for the buried phone line, the other empty for a potential future use. He also installed a switch in my stairwell to the basement so I could turn the outside garage lights on and off from the house, and he installed two gfi's: one next to the new basement breaker box and another in the laundry room. He ran a new service line to the laundry room-previously the laundry and kitchen shared the same circuit. The city electrical inspector came when Jim was done and found everything swell.

+ 0 moreDue to the scope of the project, it took two full days to complete the installation. Jim arrived on time both days. Throughout the project, he provided helpful tips on troubleshooting and maintenance. Because of the design elements in the track lighting, I was at the home throughout most of the project. Jim was a pleasure to work with and have in our house. Although I likely will not have an electrical project of this scope and complexity for some time, I will have Jim do all of my electrical work.
Description of Work: New wiring and installation of four separate lighting features -- two Tech (low voltage) lighting tracks, three Juno recessed cans, and Tech chandelier -- in living room with no previously-existing wiring. This was a complicated job that required significant additions and modifications to limited existing electrical systems.

+ 0 moreJim got to me right away, the next day after I called with my inquiry. Jim was very pleasant to have in our home. He was friendly, let me know how far he was and what was left. He did an excellent job getting the 3 lights spaced evenly. Jim put the plug on a circuit of its own - which is great and makes me feel safer. The light in the closet turned out to be the most difficult of the items on the list. We decided we wanted to have the light on a switch rather than a pull chain, if it wasn't too hard to do. Jim did this for us, even though it was much more involved than expected. The cost turned out to be slightly less than Jim had estimated. Great JOB!!
Description of Work: Jim estimated and did the following; replace one ceiling light with canister light, put in 2 new canister lights, put in plug for treadmill & put in light in closet.

Had we decided to go ahead with the improvements (which we did not), we would definitely have worked with him. He was prompt, cordial & friendly, and had obvious expertise in his area. Throughout the work, he was communicative and polite, courteous and friendly. He was innovative in his approach and respectful of the aesthetics of it.
Description of Work: The job was to add circuit breakers and a dedicated 110v line to a heated whirlpool tub. The circuit breakers were in the garage, the tub on the other side of the garage wall, half a level up in a tri-level home.

+ -1 moreCalled Total Electric about a month ago to get an estimate. The person that I talked to was very helpful and answered all of my questions. I did not book at that time. I called back about 2 weeks ago, and we scheduled a time that worked for us both. Jim was right on time at 8AM. I walked him around to show him what I wanted done. He went right to work on the outside items. He encountered some problems on the way and told me what he was going to do. He had all of the necessary equipment to correct some of my issues (bolt cutting, new outside junction box, etc). Had had some challenges with some of the existing junction boxes, as they were more shallow on my older house. He worked around that hurdle and get everything up. He was very professional, and a bit chatty, which I do not mind at all. :) He did a great job. I had him look at other things that I want done and I am sure I will use him again in the future. He was less per hour than other 3 companies I called. $90 parts.
Description of Work: Replaced outdoor front ceiling light, back flood light, two outside covered receptacles, and one interior ceiling light.

+ -1 moreService was great. I had called the office and explained our problem on a Friday, it was recommended to change the circuit breaker so we didn't have to pay a trip charge to the house. That seemed like a logical fix as we knew we were getting too much voltage into the fixtures. If we had more problems to call back. The circuit breaker was not the problem, but I did not leave my phone number to have anyone call me back. Called on a Friday so Monday I called back and was told our problem was not a circuit breaker related issue and they apologized for giving us the direction to change it. Jim was able to come out to the house on Monday afternoon and looked at our problem. After taking the light switches apart he found the problem in the larger switch in the kitchen. Once fixed, we had lights. Also looked at an outlet in another room that was not working properly and fixed the wiring on that.
Description of Work: Jim came out and fixed a electrical problem I was having in the kitchen. We have over head can lighting and under cupboard lighting. Had three switch panel controlling lighting on left, right, and under cupboards. Turned on the lights on the right they popped. When dining room light was turned on, this light was bright and caused kitchen lights to go on when they were off. Laundry room below kitchen was blowing light bulbs. Turns out the neutralizing line for the main kitchen switch was short and causing the problem.

+ -1 moreI had a truth-in-housing inspection done in preparation for putting my house on the market. There were a number of electrical things that had to be fixed, some of which we did ourselves or were fixed by a handyman. I called Jim for an estimate to replace the fuse box with circuit breakers and he told me it would probably be $800 plus permit ($70) and anything additional required to bring it up to code. While he was working on it he discovered a ground wire that was not up to code and replaced that ($85 plus $22.55 for materials). He called me at work to let me know he was going to do that. I also asked him to check on some other things in the truth-in-housing report and he did that at no charge, including replacing a dead outlet with a plate. Jim was very friendly and courteous, and his work was first rate. I was very satisfied and would definitely use this company again.

They were prompt in arriving at the scheduled time and very good about covering and cleaning up the work area. The estimated completion time was accurate and the fan works great!

(This ultimately saved me from wasting time and money having him try to fix something that was not broken.) We arranged for a time for him to come and do the other jobs. On the day of the job, Jim called to let me know he would be over in about an hour. He arrived promptly and completed the work in a timely fashion. He was very careful and did all necessary clean-up.
