THis is a father and son duo, and i chose them because i thought the father-- who is mayor of our town-- would be mindful of his reputation. The son did the work. He's cute as a button, but i know more about heating a basement than he does (and i don't know much). The heat duct in the bedroom is on the ceiling and he wanted to put the air intake across the room also on the ceiling. When I said that would mean the heat will never get down to the floor and the room will always feel cold in winter, he struggled against me. I had to insist and my contractor's crew had to chime in to support my concerns before he finally said he could put it down on the floor. Then they sent me to their plumbing supplier to to get the handheld shower i wanted, but never opened the box. When finally did, it wouldn't work for me. This shower is for preschoolers and i want the shower down low for them but the shower only spewed horizontal to the floor and wouldn't turn to point down. When i refused to let them install it, they added $48.00 restocking fee to my bill although when i called the company i learned that they didn't charge restocking fees, especially when it wasn't the customer's fault the product didn't work. The last straw for me, though, was when the son came and installed my sink and toilet on my beautiful new travertine tile: (1) he didn't remove the old silicon from the bottom of the toilet before installing. (2) he didn't make a nice clean line of silicon around the sink or toilet: there are areas where silicon is thick and areas where it is a cave and i'm worried bacteria will collect in those places. (3) he used clear silicon instead of trying to match the grout on the tiled counter top and floor. When i called the son and told him how unhappy i was with the way he did the silicon he defensively said those black pieces around the bottom of the toilet was the old silicon. DUH is that a defense? So i said i hoped his dad would come over and re-do the silicon, but he dad never returned the call. So i finally caught him on the phone and he was all defensive of his son: "what do you mean? he does excellent caulking!" and "well i don't think i can do any better than he can." repeatedly. So i called 3 local plumbers to see if i was being overly critical of the quality of work i got. They all thought i had a right to expect old silicon to be removed, a clean line of caulk around my fixtures, that the silicon should match my grout, and no it isn't difficult to make a clean line. One asked "Is this a handyman or a licensed plumber?" One also told me how to remove the old silicon -- slice with an exacto knife around the porcelain and again around the tile then pull out. And use acetone to remove the residue. As soon as i do that i will call another plumber to come and re-do the silicon to match my grout. And i will take the cost of it off the bill they have sent.
