I had an unusual situation in that the floor in my house is supported by floor trusses 24" on center with a span of 24 feet and an OSB subfloor. This results in a floor that flexes more than most. I was concerned about both the weight of the finished tile job (resulting in floor sag) and whether the tile would crack over time. I interviewed seven tilers in all, because every one had a different idea on how to do the job. Most of them seemed to want to do the job the same way they do every job, without being able to address my specific situation. Dave was the only tiler that could explain the pros and cons of each method and recommend the best method for me, as well as the best way to reinforce the subfloor. His recommendation also matched the research I had done and the conclusion I had reached. He stays current on new tiling products and methods, unlike the other tilers I interviewed. For example, there are four different kinds of tile backer board on the market for showers. Dave has experience tearing out and retiling leaking shower walls and could tell me first hand how each kind of backer holds up over time as well as its pros and cons. The other tilers just use one kind of backer board on all jobs. The work that Dave did was excellent. He has a good eye for tile layout and aesthetics. I have received compliments on the tiled floors from most new visitors. The only caveat I will mention is that Dave (at this writing anyway) does his tiling part time and has a lot on his plate, so scheduling may be an issue for some. In my case, I was aware of this up front and I was ok on giving him flexibility on when to complete the work. I got a great tile job at a good price and I'm very satisfied with the work.

This was a great job with no major issues or setbacks. Being that this was a basement bath/shower redo, it did take longer for things to dry. I was over my estimated finish day by two. An overall grade of "A" is great and think all of the B's are just done in general as the customer was happy throughout the project. Thank You, Dave

This is the second project Dave has done for us (he tiled our kitchen a few years ago). it went very well--Dave is easy to work with and did a great job/very professional and thorough. (there were a few delays, but that was our fault due to a permit issue). I thought the price was very reasonable for the work done.

He tiled the kitchen, and the laundry room which is adjacent to it. It took quite a while to do but he did a pretty good job of it. The tiles were alternating dark and light, and I had it put at an angle, which is not easy to do. He did it extremely well with nothing loose, and he cleaned up after the job. He could have done it a lot cheaper, but I wanted good quality heat underneath. In fact, the heat for the two areas is separate, and in winter when I turned on the thermostat for the laundry room, it didn't heat up. So I called him and he found out that there was some damage to it from the service fan. So, he got a new one and sent it to me, and I had it installed. He didn't take too long to fix it. He was responsive; he got back to me when I had the problem with the thermostat.

He passes on discount at certain places and also did pass on his professional discount at tile shops. A friend of mine who is in the same business said that he had done a outstanding job. He has converted our basement in to heaven. He finished the work well within time. Tough I called him at a fairly odd time he ensured that he called me back,he takes his business very seriously. We are extremely pleased with the fact that he passed his professional discount at the tile store due to which we were able to upgrade to a better quality tile. He was very straight forward to work with.

Dave was friendly and professional, and did a great job on our fireplace. His estimate was originally for tearing out our existing hearth tiles and replacing them to extend the area of the hearth (the fireplace insert we were installing required a deeper hearth). When our plans for having a wood guy cut out the wood floor around the hearth didn't quite work out, he said that he could tile over top of the existing wood and tile instead, plus put on the wood trim surrounding the tile. He worked part of two days to complete the job, which was exactly as planned, let me know when he was coming, kept things clean, and did great quality work.

He cut and installed subway tiling all around my kitchen. I loved everything. He was definitely more expensive than the others but it was worth it. He had very high reviews and I would definitely use him again. I think what made it worth the price is when I talked to other people it just didn't feel that I would get a good experience. It felt like they weren't very familiar with what I needed. He knew exactly what his response was he knew exactly what I wanted. I felt like he was more experienced and capable of doing this particular work. He was very responsive and knowledgeable.

ALTHOUGH THERE WAS NO PRICE LISTED IN THE FEEDBACK, THE JOB COST WAS $970.00. THE TILE CHOSEN FOR THE PROJECT WAS A SPECIAL ORDER IRREGULAR HAND MADE SUBWAY TILE, WHICH IS MORE DIFFICULT TO WORK WITH THAN THE TYPICAL FACTORY PRODUCED SUBWAY TILE. I DON'T KNOW IF THEY HAD THEIR TILE CHOSEN YET WHEN THEY RECEIVED THE OTHER ESTIMATES BUT THAT COULD MAKE A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE IN THE COST. I DO CHECK MY PRICING AS OFTEN AS I CAN TO MAKE SURE I'M COMPETITIVE.

The job had its ups and downs. We did the work just prior to Christmas and then on the week after Christmas. Dave gave me a start date but then was unable to start because of a furnace problem at his own home. He didn't communicate with me about the late start (I was out of town) until I called him to find out how the project was going. Although he said he'd start a day later, again he was unable to come. The job started about 3 days late and ended up causing me problems with my plumbing contractors. Fortunately, my plumber agreed to install a toilet for me on 12/24 or I would have been in big trouble. On the second bathroom, Dave installed 10 inches above a standard chair rail height in an attempt to cover a problem with the wall. When I told him this wouldn't work for me, however, he came back the next day and removed one row of 10 inch tiles to solve the problem. The workmanship was fine but the project was very stressful due to his inability to follow through on agreed work dates. I may have caught him at a bad time -- a friend of mine had him work for them and did not have this problem.

THIS REPORT WAS A REAL SURPRISE AND I HAD TO DO SOME RESEARCH BEFORE POSTING A RESPONSE. I WANTED TO MAKE SURE MY RESPONSE WAS ACCURATE AND DOUBLE CHECK MY FACTS. THE REPORT IS DATED AUGUST 1ST BUT DID NOT POST UNTIL AUGUST 30TH, ALMOST EIGHT MONTHS AFTER THE JOB WAS COMPLETED. WHEN I LEFT SHE WAS HAPPY WITH BOTH BATHROOMS AND NEVER GAVE THE IMPRESSION THAT THERE WERE ANY PROBLEMS OTHER THAN THE UPSTAIRS BATHROOM TILE HEIGHT CHANGE THAT I’LL EXPLAIN BELOW. FIRST, THERE WERE TWO BATHROOMS TILED FOR A TOTAL OF $4350.00 NOT $2500.00. THE FIRST BATHROOM WAS TO START DECEMBER 17, 2007. I PICKED UP HER MATERIALS THAT DAY, BUT COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE OTHER CONTRACTOR WAS NOT FINISHED WITH HIS PREP WORK. THE CLIENT WAS OUT OF TOWN AS SHE STATED AND NEVER LEFT A NUMBER WHERE SHE COULD BE REACHED. SHE WAS NOT AWARE OF MY LATE START UNTIL SHE CONTACTED ME. (I DID MENTION TO HER IN CONVERSATION THAT MY FURNACE WENT OUT BUT IT DID NOT AFFECT HER JOB AT ALL. IT WAS WORKED ON IN THE EVENING AND AT NIGHT AND MY WIFE WAS HOME WHEN THE REPAIR MAN CAME.) WE ALSO HAD SNOWSTORMS DURING THAT TIME. EVEN WITH THE LATE START, MY PORTION OF THE BATHROOM REMODEL WAS COMPLETED ON THE 23RD AS SCHEDULED EVEN THOUGH ADDITIONAL WORK HAD BEEN ADDED BY THE CLIENT AFTER SCHEDULING. THE PLUMBER, WHO I WORK WITH OFTEN, KNEW WHEN I WAS TO COMPLETE MY PORTION AND HE WAS TO SET THE TOILET. HE STATED THERE WAS NO PROBLEM. THE SECOND BATHROOM WAS STARTED AFTER CHRISTMAS AND COMPLETED IN JANUARY, 2008. I REMOVED OLD PLASTIC 4 X 4 TILES FROM HER WALLS AROUND THE BATHROOM. THE TILE WAS REPLACED WITH 8 X 10 TILES, 2- 1” STRIPS AND BULLNOSE. THE NEW INSTALL HEIGHT WAS PLACED APPROXIMATELY A 1” TO 1 ½” OVER THE OLD TILE HEIGHT BECAUSE OF THE LAYOUT, BORDER AND BULLNOSE. WHEN TALKING ABOUT THE LAYOUT, SHE WANTED THE NEW TILE TO REPLACE THE OLD TILE WHICH WAS 56” HIGH. A LOWER HEIGHT WAS NEVER DISCUSSED. IF IT WOULD HAVE BEEN, I WOULD HAVE ADVISED HER TO REPLACE THE DRYWALL. SHE WAS AT WORK WHEN I FINISHED SETTING THE TILE AND WAS GOING OUT OF TOWN THE NEXT DAY. WHEN I ARRIVED TO GROUT, SHE HAD LEFT A NOTE STATING THAT SHE "CHECKED WITH SOME EXPERIENCED FRIENDS AND THEY SUGGESTED THAT THE TILE HEIGHT SHOULD BE BETWEEN 42” AND 48”.” SHE WANTED THE TOP 10” TILES REMOVED AND THE 2- 1” STRIPS AND BULLNOSE MOVED DOWN. I REMOVED AND REPLACED THE TILES SHE REQUESTED AND DID NOT CHARGE HER ADDITIONAL LABOR FOR THE ADDITIONAL WORK NOW REQUESTED RESULTING IN AN ADDITIONAL DAY. BUT BY DOING THIS, IT BROUGHT THE WALL TILE HEIGHT APPROXIMATELY 8” BELOW WHERE THE OLD TILE HEIGHT WAS LEAVING THE OLD RESIDUE ON THE WALL ABOVE THE NEW TILE. THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH THE WALL THAT I WAS TRYING TO COVER, OTHER THEN THE SAME FOOTPRINT OF THE OLD TILE.

Just great! I have no complaints. I was comfortable with and liked Dave as soon as I met him (and the reviews on Angie's List were right on). He brought a book of photos to show me of work he had done, which I appreciated (I had 5 bids - only the two that were from Angie's List brought photos to show me). Dave prefers to communicate via phone instead of email. He did keep in good communication with me throughout the process. Dave is very easy going and is easy to have around. He has a good artistic eye, and his suggestions were very helpful. He was very nice to my dog (and let her hang around him as he worked), which I (and she) appreciated. By the end of the (8-day) job, my dog was laying on the floor while Dave worked around her. When Dave first came to the house to give me the bid and take the measurements, he ended up sitting on the floor in the master, doing his drawings. He is very relaxed, yet very professional. Dave's bid was originally highest of the 5 bids I had. After some discussion, he reduced his bid a bit. He still was 4th highest. I went with him anyway because I liked his eye for design, his easygoing nature, and because I trusted him to do great work (based, in part, on the reviews on this list and the photos he showed me). I wasn't disappointed. I waited about a month for the job to start. However, Dave started when he said he would, and finished within a day of when he said originally said he would. I paid exactly what was bid; there were no surprises that resulted in an increased cost to me. Dave was very neat, and kept the mess to a minimum. He cleaned up at the end of each day. I am allergic to dust, and Dave did his best to keep the dust to a minimum (no small job). He stacked all the rubbish, old tile, etc., outside in a pile until he hauled it away at the end of the job. Dave also warned me when he would be sawing in the garage; that the dust would be pretty heavy, so that I could move things that I wanted to keep cleaner out of the area. Dave taped off areas at the end of each day that weren't ready for me/my dog to walk into. Dave also coordinated with my plumber (Jim from Pro Master - see my review) to get the plumbing work done. Dave does not replace toilets, so Jim made a few trips out to connect a drain, change a faucet, reinstall a toilet, etc. I didn't have to do any of that scheduling, which was great. Both bathrooms look dramatically different from when I began (I also painted, etc.). I am thrilled with the job that Dave did, and as I mentioned, I've had several people comment on the great tiling job that was done. I am particularly happy with the new shower, it's niches and the cool floor. I would hire Dave again in a minute for my next tiling job. I have no complaints; only compliments.
Description of Work: In June 2008, Dave tiled two bathrooms in my 1984 house. Both bathrooms had original flooring; the lower level was linoleum, and the master was a light green, very dated, tile. In the master, Dave removed the original floor, tub backsplash, and shower tile. He re-tiled that room, and built a new curb and shower floor to replace the old (1984) fiberglass shower floor. He also replaced the etched glass shower door with a new clear glass door (that I purchased separately). My favorite thing, he built in two custom niches in the shower to hold shampoo, soap, etc. I LOVE the niches! We used a porcelain tile with a slate kind of design on it, and slate mosaic for the trim (saving some money by not using a standard trim) and floor. In the lower level bath, Dave originally planned to remove the linoleum, but when that proved near-impossible, he laid the tile over the linoleum using some kind of mortar process. We used an inexpensive ivory porcelain tile with (expensive) glass mosaic tile inset in a "hopscotch" pattern. I love the look and have had many compliments on the great job of tiling Dave did in both rooms. The price above was just Dave's labor. The cost of the tile, door, and all materials was additional. I purchased the bulk of the tile through Marilyn at Rubble (was very happy with her design services), and the slate mosaic tile through the Tile Shop in Burnsville (I was unhappy with their service and lack of design assistance, but they had a very large selection and great showroom). Dave passed on his discount at the Tile Shop to me; he does not use a discount at Rubble. I purchased all tile and grout through both vendors on my credit card; Dave placed the order and picked it up for me.

This is the second time I hired Dave for tile work. Dave looked at my job and was able to provide a wirtten estimate of his labor plus all materials listed I would need to provide for the job. (I provided tile, grout and shower door.) He suggested several tile store options that would allow me to buy the tile at his contractor discount. He made a wonderful suggestion for a plumber I used to remove toilet, sink cabinet and water shut offs before he came in to start his tile tearout and replacement. He was able to hand grind all the edges for the 12 x 12 marble tile I bought since there was no bullnose (rounded edge pieces) option to buy for this product. He worked with me on tear out of the ceiling and fixed a stud that had been sagging due to improper installation. He built and tiled the shower floor. He ripped out and replaced the exsisting bathroom floor also and tiled up half of the wall behind the toilet and sink cabinet. Dave replaced the shower door. I called him a day or two after the job was complete about grout that had shrunk and left a crack. He came out the next day and filled the spot. He disposed of all materials and cleaned up after himself. I liked working with Dave and felt he gave me a fair price. My bathroom looks beautiful!

I did originally go with Dave and his company for the work, but then I didn't end up having him do the work, as I had found someone else that could do the tile work of the bathroom, along with a few extras that I needed to have done, such as remove and replace toilet and some other little things, like electrical, for a cheaper price and then I didn't have to coordinate any work between the tile and the toilet person.
Description of Work: I had asked Dave to give me an estimate for removing the current bathroom tile on the bath walls, remove the tub surround, remove the 1st layer of bathroom flooring, to raise up the bathroom vanity (he said he could build it up for me), and to replace all of those areas above with tile. :) He gave me some options of where to get the tile-places where he has accounts and that he would pick up the tile for me.

THE RATING OF "B" IN PROFESSIONALISM AND RESPONSIVENESS IS CURIOUS SINCE I MET WITH THE CLIENT THE SAME DAY SHE CALLED AND WROTE THE ESTIMATE WHILE MEETING WITH HER. AFTER SEVERAL PHONE CALLS OF ANSWERING ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS SHE DECIDED TO HIRE ME TO DO THE WORK. THE WORK WAS BOOKED 3 WEEKS OUT AND IT TOOK OVER TWO WEEKS TO GET HER DEPOSIT. I THEN RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM HER THE WEEKEND BEFORE OUR START SAYING SHE WANTED TO CANCEL BECAUSE SHE FOUND SOMEONE CHEAPER. IT ISN'T THE NORM TO STILL BE TAKING BIDS ONCE YOU AWARD A COMPANY THE CONTRACT, IT'S JUST POOR FORM. (SHE RATED MY PRICE AN "A".) ONCE HER CHECK CLEARED I SENT HER A FULL REFUND. I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE COMMENT OF WHAT SHE LIKED LEAST ABOUT ME. WE HAD 5 PHONE CONVERSATIONS UP TO HER EMAIL TO CANCEL THEN SHE WOULD NOT RETURN PHONE CALLS OR EVEN EMAILS.

Without a hitch. He installed the tile one day and grouted it the next. He came back later to seal it. All in all, a very positive experience.

He described the best way to cover over the tile and took the time to make sure we understood what he would be doing. He covered all the carpet and was very careful to remove his shoes when he came in. He vacuumed as he went and when he left I think it was cleaner than when he arrived. He set the tile the first day, and was very meticulous in his work. Came back on day 2 at the agreed upon time and finished the grouting. Everything looked fantastic, and we have had many complements. It was a great thing to do to update the fireplace without replacing it.

Very well. Took longer than estimated but no complaints given the quality. Had chosen this installer based on other reports of doing a good job on meeting ceramic to hard wood floors. Fabulous job in meeting two doorways to hard wood, also in a basement stairwell. Our floor was/is very uneven because one section of the room had previously been a back porch so there is a "drop off" between the original kitchen and the new eating area. Dave did a great job in the transition. Also, in the portion of the room that had been the back porch we asked him to install a NuHeat element. Absolutely love it! Would recommend Dave to anyone.

Dave does excellent work. He has a great eye for tile design. We hired Dave about a year ago to do some other more complicated work involving a fire place. So, we knew that he was trustworthy, careful, reliable and experienced. There are cheaper tile guys -- we've used them and regretted them. Dave's prices are reasonable. Most importantly, he does the job right. He's a good problem solver and easy to talk to. I picked the floor/wall tiles and, at my request, Dave picked the accent tiles and grout to finish the job. It looks better than I thought it would. He kept the place clean and put down a plastic carpet protector between the door and the bathroom. He's busy coordinating with other contractors and projects, so you have to be a bit flexible. We gave him access to the house and had no problem with him working here by himself.
