Handyman & Building Services; including, but not limited to the following; kitchen and bathroom remodeling, painting, decks, drywall repair and installation.
My major problem was the cost. The estimate was $3500 and the actual was $6625, which included $65 to have an electrical contractor come for 15 minutes to change a light switch. The painting turned out well. The grout color was not even (lighter in some areas and darker in others). He said that the lighter areas had not dried yet and would darken within a week. After the guys spent much time in the kitchen and bathrooms that day, the color of all the grout was consistently light. Just the reverse of what he said would happen. I think I paid to have that happen. They were all very friendly and the finish work was done well.
Description of Work: Tiled the kitchen, laundry, pantry and 2 bathrooms. Painted 3 accent walls, new faucet in kitchen, new electrical switch.

Mark and his crew were always on time, arriving early each day. The entire team was prompt, polite and professional. Their work is of the highest quality. The minute Mark and his team were finished we started making another list of other work we need done at our house. Mark was always responsive - even answering a question while on vacation out of the country. The experience with Mark and his team was without question excellent.

Mark was initially very prompt at responding to emails and scheduling a date to come out and see my deck. He was professional in person while looking at the job and told me he would have an estimate for me that weekend. However, I never heard back from him. I emailed him again letting him know i had gotten other estimates and he said he would have one for me ASAP, and then I never heard back. I obviously went with another provider.
Description of Work: Came out to look at our deck in order to give me an estimate for refinishing the deck, but then never got me an estimate or any follow up, even after prompting.
Mark and his crew did an excellent job in our kitchen. Mark impressed me as a true craftsman, which is something that is becoming increasingly uncommon. He is experienced, knowledgeable, extremely responsive, and employs an experienced team. He also is a perfectionist who notices when little things are off and would simply fix them for us while working on his main project. For example, he re-balanced our dishwasher and installed door stops free of charge while fixing our cabinetry. Mark also has a great eye for design and had some excellent suggestions for us in terms of how we might turn our basement into a more usable and attractive space. We had a great time working with him and will call him again next time we have a job around the house! He truly is highly recommended.
Description of Work: Mark and his crew fixed the hanging of our existing kitchen cabinets which were failing because the doors were too heavy for the current hinges. He also created new cabinet doors for one area and re-painted the room. Finally, he provided very clever design guidance for future projects that we are considering.
Mark and his crew completed repair work on our home as a result of water damage from a structural leak. They performed the work quickly, with quality and professionalism. We would definitely hire them in the future.
Description of Work: Repairs to interior subfloor and walls of house do to damage from water leak, along with exterior repairs. Insulation and sealing of house crawlspace as well.
His crew - and different guys came at different times - were always courteous and professional. They did excellent work and did work that was above and beyond my expectations. The cost was fair and reasonable. He gave me a price in advance and stuck to it. They left everything clean and neat. Are there any more good things I can say about them? I am looking forward to working with him again for one more project I need to do.
Description of Work: The crew installed a hardwood floor, painted my downstairs, and installed a complete banister and painted it. They also put in the baseboards and quarter rounds.
We started my renovation project in August 2015 and completed in October 2015. There were also couple of small additional projects done in February 2016. Mark and his crew were terrific. Always on time and ready to start, very polite and hard-working people. This is the best crew I?ve met so far and I?ve been through many renovation projects. Their first job was landscaping. Mark suggested removing wild bushes around the house, exposing big landscaping rocks. When I came home from work, I could not recognize the house! It looked so pretty from the outside. Mark also suggested mulching the entire backyard where, because of the lack of sun, there was no grass. The job was done fast and professional. The next job was to paint the house. Mark spent hours helping me select the colors. He suggested we paint the walls in each room different hue but from the same palette, creating accent walls and making the house visually brighter. Mark is a great designer and had put a lot of thoughts into the project. He has done a great job. Every wall in the house is now of slightly different color but it all works together perfectly. The work was performed fast. He and his crew also put a lot of effort into protecting floors, furniture and household items during the paint process, carefully moving or covering the work area. Next job was to replace the ugly green tile in the foyer. Again, I followed Mark?s suggestion and picked Travertine, the natural stone. He and his crew installed and grouted the tiles. There were a couple of tiles that looked slightly uneven. When I pointed it out to Mark he immediately addressed the issue and replaced them the next day. He also has done a great job installing small Travertine tiles on the kitchen walls, creating a beautiful backsplash, with tiles of a darker color as accents. He installed similar tiles around the fireplace in the living room, adjacent to the kitchen. Because of Mark?s selection of materials and design suggestions everything now looks like a perfect ensemble. Mark also helped redesign the powder room. It looked small and cluttered before. Mark suggested we replace old, bulky sink with the slick pedestal one, get rid of a cabinet, put in a new toilet, as well as modern-looking mirrors, medicine cabinet and other fixtures. He also painted the powder room different shades of charcoal. After that, it looked twice as big as before! Mark and his crew also have replaced old brass door handles and knobs with the chrome ones, creating a more modern look for my 16 year old house. They replaced light fixtures as well to match door handles and knobs. Mark also made several very valuable recommendations about other contractors for the jobs that he does not do himself. He recommended a great electrician, hardwood floors company and granite countertops outfit. All his recommendations turned out to be a great success. He and his crew helped prepare the house for granite and hardwood floors installation, thus reducing my expenses. Overall, I am completely satisfied with the outcome of the project. Mark and his crew are polite, courteous, hard-working people. All my issues and concerns were addressed professionally and on time. Mark is very fast in getting back to you by phone, e-mail or text. He is very optimistic and very enthusiastic about his work. Working with him was a great pleasure and a lot of fun! He takes a lot of pride in his work and delivers great results. I would recommend hiring Mark and his crew to anyone.
Description of Work: Mark Ellis and his crew completely remodeled my 5,000 SF house. The painted all walls inside the house, installed new tile in the foyer, completely remodeled my powder room, install new lights in the entire house, replace door knobs on every single door and kitchen cabinet, put a backsplash in the kitchen, remodeled the fireplace. Outside, they cleaned landscaping, removing wild bushes and shrubs, built a fire pit, and mulched the backyard, took care of the lawn. They also painted the entire house on the outside, including the garage doors, front doors, soffit and spouts, stained and painted the wooden deck. They also performed countless handyman chores. They also helped prepare the house for granite countertops and hard-wood floors installation.

Mark and his team did an outstanding job realizing our vision for our remodel. I felt like Mark treated our home like it was his own, and was unsatisfied with anything less than perfection. We had a lot of tile work and I was nervous about the quirks of our old home ruining the symmetry, but Mark was unfazed by the various challenges and delivered a perfect product. Working with Mark was a good balance between knowing that he had everything under control and knowing that my input/opinion was being heard. Mark was always very quick to respond to any questions/concerns we had and we never felt like we were in the dark about the project's cost or progress. It is always hard to spend money/time on a renovation, but Mark makes the experience as painless as possible and at the end of it i can guarantee that you will love your new space and feel confident that you had a contractor who took the time to do everything "the right way". Thanks Mark!!!

It went great. First of I had to refinance my home to fund the project. I originally had Mark give me a quote in April, and of course as these things go it took until the end of August for it to go through. I kept Mark in the loop and as soon as I got the funds he and his team were ready to go. They came in like demolition ninjas and the first day had my kitchen down to the studs. Mark worked very hard to fit a full kitchen into a very small space with a tight budget. Mark is a great communicator and from the beginning he made it clear the project was a collaboration. He worked with me to get the best value in products for my budget and what my vision for the space was. I am extremely happy with the final results and am already planning the next project that I will have Mark work on. I 100% would recommend him to a friend
Description of Work: Mark completely remodeled my kitchen that was the original kitchen from 1932
My experience with Mark Ellis Builders and with Mark Ellis in particular, was exceptionally good. He kept his promise and delivered more than we agreed upon, and at very high quality. I think price was right, considering excellent quality, amount of work and material, and exceptional punctuality. Mark found cause of the leak, fixed it, restored the ceiling, and painted it over. It looks brand new. Walls were primed 5 times (in some areas) and painted eventually warm white color, as I requested. No bleed through from all that "graffiti":) Doors of kitchen cabinets were taken off, so their fixture, painted, and then reassembled. All outlets and light switches plates were removed and painted. In some cases, where they were used heavily, he installed new plates of the same color and type as before. Trying to reduce price, I asked him to paint just some of the walls. I noted that they simply painted "all over" or wherever they saw that it needs paint. Place looks great - fresh and clean. I was very pleased with the quality, timing, and personal experience. Mark is a proud owner of a small high quality American business, and I congratulate him on it. I will use him when I need any repair in my new house. Thank you, Mark!
Description of Work: Project was to prepare 2,000 sq. ft. condo for sale. Mark Builders repaired leaking Jacuzzi (required opening of damaged ceiling on the first floor, as Jacuzzi is on the second, repairing the leak, followed by restoring and painting of the ceiling). Also I needed to repaint entire first floor and some of the walls on the second and finished basement. Walls required numerous minor repairing's, including dents. Most importantly they have extensive drawings with markers, canyons, pens, etc. Kitchen cabinets required repainting as well. There was a broken electrical fixture in the bathroom. Importantly, I needed it to be done in a short time and on short notice.
The work performed was gorgeous. I was a little put off at first by the price Mark quoted me because I had gotten a cheaper quote from somebody else. However, the other contractor was unresponsive where Mark was always on top of questions and ready to help at every moment. I did a search of contractor costs around the country and found that Mark was actually below the average. This was surprising to me since the costs in Ann Arbor are usually above the national averages. From the beginning Mark emphasized that he sold quality and that he would try to keep our costs down but that his quotes were usually a bit above what he expected. Not only was Mark pretty close to his originally quoted costs but he also gave us great insights into some of the things we needed, like the actual fireplace. For quality I feel we got not just great craftsmanship but a lot of support in making decisions and even a bit of design. I had designed the fireplace my self and Mark was able to turn the concept into reality and make it look EXACTLY like the style we were hoping for. The mantle piece he found for us (after doing a lot of shopping for us) is beautiful. The stone work is perfect and the shelves matched the mantle beautifully. Mark also helped us create a very clean look by putting in routing channels behind the wall that I could use to route cables and other things for the electronic equipment. In the end the renovation looks amazing and I think it will add way more value to our house. I big shout out to Allstate Home Entertainment, which Mark recommended for the fireplace. They helped us get a great deal on a beautiful fireplace with all the bells and whistles. Overall Mark was on top of things, very responsive, and right on the spot for cost. We liked how transparent he was on expenses - providing us with receipts for everything he purchased. Craftsmanship was above my expectations. On top of all that Mark was always funny and light hearted. He made the process actually enjoyable. I also have to say that he worked extra hard (I would say beyond reasonable expectations) to get the job done before my wife's due date for our first baby. So the fireplace will be an awesome place for both of us to get to know our little one.
Description of Work: Mark Ellis did a renovation in our family room adding a fireplace and built in shelves.
They were timely, professional, and the work was all done well. Mark is thoughtful and helped us to prioritize the numerous projects so we could try to get the work done within our budget and with emphasis on tasks that were important for the safety of our staff and the long-term maintenance and protection of the integrity of our grand old house. His pricing was fair and honest. The work ended up going over budget but he made sure we were kept aware of what was happening and why, so we could approve the overage. We intend to continue working with Mark Ellis Builders as we go forward with future maintenance and repairs.
Description of Work: We have an 1890's era house used for law offices. It needed a thoughtful review of maintenance and repairs from the ground up. Mark reviewed our needs and made many thoughtful suggestions, and we decided priorities. Then he and his crew came out and tackled all of the work. The work included caulking, weatherproofing, drywall repair, painting, gutter cleaning and leak repair, fence repair, bat-proofing vents, traction stripping on stairs, building built-in shelving, cleaning and hauling away loads of old unneeded supplies, clearing fire exits, re-routing drainage, re-grading away from the building, replacement of displaced pavers, some carpentry, sealing of decaying brickwork, painting, flat roof repair, and other work.

After the repair was scheduled the work was performed at the scheduled time.
Description of Work: Replace rotted wood on chimney and painted the replacement wood.
They did an excellent job of the work, and it looks very good. The crew was friendly, courteous, expert, and hard-working. The job took longer than anticipated, mostly due to all the rain we had this summer, and cost more than anticipated, mostly due to additional rot discovered and repairs that needed to be done. We had let these repairs go for longer than we should have, and it is important to find and fix these problems before they get much worse and much more expensive, so I believe this is money well spent. They did a good job, and cleaned up very well afterwards. I will be happy to use them again.
Description of Work: They prepped and painted the entire outside of our (large) house, repaired and re-stained the deck, replaced a sliding glass door repairing surrounding rotted wood, and did several smaller tasks such as moving a storage rack in the garage and repairing our broken snow-blower.

Mark and his team worked on my house for 3 days and did a good job fixing up the outside of my home. The shed looks like it is brand new and being able to open the screen door without having to "shoulder" it open and closed is fantastic! The guys were respectful & courteous. Even though it took Mark a while to get my job scheduled (mostly due to rain), he communicated with me along the way. The team did a good job of cleaning up their mess as well.
Description of Work: Replaced several wood rotted boards on the garage and shed; replaced bowed siding on the corner of the house, pin tucked cracks in the stone facade; primed and painted all boards that were replaced; primed and painted the entire covered back porch; replaced the side garage door and fixed the back porch screen door so it doesn't stick anymore.

This was my first remodel experience and although it went well, I would make one change. I used the company that I ordered the cabinets from to do the cabinet installation and in the future, I would use Mark Ellis Builders for the entire project. Working with both companies slowed down progress and, I think, led to unnecessary hassles. Just have Mark do everything. In summary, I'm delighted with every bit of work Mark and his crew performed. They were perfect - uber skilled, reliable, prompt, polite, helpful, tidy and fun. My kitchen is now a show-stopper. In reality, I live in a 1960's brick ranch but I feel like I live in a palace. I have Mark Ellis and his crew to thank and he will, absolutely, have my business for as long as he's available.
Description of Work: Kitchen and dining room remodel - including demolition of original kitchen and dining room, new insulation, new walls/ceiling, new electricity. Installation of bamboo floor, stainless steel back-splash, appliances, lights, plumbing. They also painted the entryway, kitchen, living room, dining room, stairway and doors - and of course put the house back together when the project was complete (ie re-hung pictures, curtain rods, put furniture where I wanted it, etc).
Mark and his crew were very professional and energetic. He was there every morning before 7AM ready to go. They installed a protective treatment on my floors before they started to avoid any damage during their work. Everyone was friendly and easy to work with. They cleaned up after themselves and left the place in good shape when they were finished. Their paint and trim work was superb and their tile work was good. This was the first time I have worked with a contractor so it was a learning experience for me. I really enjoyed working with Mark and I think he did a great job. Not having gone through a job like this before I didn't ask enough questions, so at first I was a little surprised I needed to pay for things like the dumpster, buckets and latex gloves for mixing grout, or trash bags for cleaning up. I misinterpreted Mark's initial quote and thought I was only paying for some of the materials like tiles. Mark was good about communicating and encouraged me to email him often with requests and to feel free to ask questions. He was always open to questions and was very professional, next time I will definitely ask more questions from the beginning and probably give a daily email update of things that need to be done, to help both parties ensure nothing slips through the cracks. We initially wanted to just have the drywall in the basement bathroom finished and the master bathroom completely remodeled. We ended up having Mark also do the drywall in the rest of the basement, tearing out the old wood paneling. The new quote also included repainting my dining room and removing an old wallpaper border, installing shelving units in my garage, and finishing trim work in my kitchen. When the plumbing work for the master bathroom took longer than originally expected, I told Mark to cut projects as needed and gave him a priority list of which projects were most important to me. I was not willing to spend more money to get everything done, I was already spending more than anticipated. The basement drywall underneath the wood paneling also had imperfections and Mark requested he tear it all off instead of spending the extra time to patch and repair it. In the end, Mark didn?t do the dining room, garage, or kitchen work to balance his budget. The work in the basement turned out fantastic. I'm still impressed every time I look closely at their trim work and the paint. The drywall came out great and it really transformed the room. When we went over what I wanted in each room I mentioned adding a closet to the corner. Unfortunately they had finished the drywall and painting before I reminded Mark that we needed a closet. He had no issue adding the closet after the fact and didn't blame me for not mentioning it sooner. They went the extra mile to make the place really pop. They replaced ugly old light fixture with a new one, and patched the popcorn ceiling to blend it in. When the carpet install was scheduled Mark had his guys come out to move furniture around in my basement so I wouldn't be charged by the carpet company. They also removed and reinstalled some of my pre-existing trim that wouldn't fit with the new carpet, free of charge. They had to do a lot of work to make the shower in my master bathroom bigger. They were able to add somewhere near 10" of space by moving a wall and a vent stack, and it really helped with the feel of the shower. The tiles I chose gave them some issues with holding grout and proved difficult to remove the haze, but they worked hard to get it looking good. They came back and fixed some issues I had with their grout work. They had forgotten to hang the toilet paper holder and I asked them to align the doors on the new cabinet they hung. Mark never argued with any of my requests, he just got it done. They also repaired a leak in my roof. Their first attempt wasn?t enough, but Mark noticed this on his own before they left. I wouldn?t have noticed the leak for awhile, so it was great that Mark noticed it and fixed it without me having to have them come back out. Overall I am very pleased with Mark?s work. I would definitely have him do more work if I ever move to a new home that needs finishing.
Description of Work: Mark and his crew did drywall and paint in my basement bedroom and basement bathroom, fixed a leak on my roof, and did an entirely new master bathroom with custom tile shower.

The work team had to remove the original fans, repair some associated electrical wiring, and install the fans. This project involved building a temporary deck that spanned the pool and could be moved under each of the three fans, working from a ladder to remove the old fans, and install the new ones. They also changed out the switch boxes for the fans. The project took a team of three workers all day, with a little time out to perform several smaller repairs around then house. The team arrived exactly when promised and completed the work on time and as promised. The fans are well installed, and one of the team carefully walked me through the installation, the new switching system, and instructions for running the fans. Furthermore, the team used our garage to put together the fans and to build the temporary decking and then take it apart. At the end of the day, I found the garage the cleanest and neatest it has been in years.
Description of Work: Mark Ellis Builders installed three fans in the ceiling of the atrium at the center of our house, about 18 feet up and over a pool. They also performed several other smaller repairs at our house.

Mark and his employees are highly skilled, careful with their surroundings, pleasant and accommodating. Their work was of the highest standards of craftsmanship. If, in the future, more repairs or building needs doing this company will be the first I'll call. Mark had some difficulty with his supplier and rather than wait 4 or 5 days for delivery of the proper deck material he picked up the materials on his own so there would be no delay in completing the deck. That's above and beyond the call of duty.

Came out to give a quote within 3 days of sending message. Very responsive over email. Arrived on the day of work on time and got right to work. For the most part, it went pretty well, they installed two headers in two load bearing walls. The half wall that was constructed was not stable at all, and quite a bit out of level. There was also constant bickering between Mark and one of the workers (who seemed like he didn't want to be there). Overall experience was average/below average, I would definitely not hire again.

I responded to a handyman for a day add but had more work than a day. I was contacted immediately and Mark came over to assess the work to be done. On the scheduled day the crew arrived on time. They were professional, friendly, efficient and they did high quality work. I highly recommend using Mark and his crew for big or small jobs.
Description of Work: I am preparing my house to sell. Mark's crew did a number of odd jobs including replacing drywall, replacing faucets, replacing bathrrom ceiling fan and trim work among other things.
We are very happy with Mark and his team and would definitely recommend them. Our bathroom was beautifully done. The end result is amazing and the new bathroom looks just like those high-end bathroom pictures on Houzz/Pinterest. During the renovation process, Mark and his team are professional and friendly. They do quality work. Mark also responds very promptly. He replied my phone calls or emails within minutes whenever I had a question or request. He also patiently went with us to the Tile shop twice to pick out the tiles. We will use them again
