He does most of the work for us now, so that's basically been a really good thing. Anytime we need something we just call him, and he just does it. That has been really helpful. He has done so many things, because we have been so happy with him and his company. His price is a little higher than when we are quoted, when we get a second quote. But we know he does better quality work so that is why it is worth the additional price for us. The price will be higher than what other quote, but the materials they use will not be the same type quality material. He is very responsive. We have had no concerns on punctuality. We will have him come out in the next couple of weeks for more work.

Couldn't be happier with the job Mark and his crew did. The suggestions Mark made for some of our kitchen design problems were terrific. I will definitely call Mark first for any future work we need done.

Another excellent experience with Mark and his team. We didn't know what to do when we found that our bedroom wall had been slowly leaking and causing hidden damage. Mark was able to determine cause and his crew quickly got to work. His crew always show up on time (which is as early as you will let them) and they do great quality work.

Mark arrived on time when he said he would (I think he was actually a few minutes early even). He also returned the quote in a reasonable amount of time (within a couple of days). While I do think Mark is a nice guy, very friendly and talkative, I'm disappointed to have to offer a less than stellar review. Mark told me that the work around my tub (installation of durock) was incorrect and that he would have to rip some out and for the rest he would either have to rip it out or install new cement board over top of it. The reason I was given was that the mud used in the seams was water soluble and would cause the tile to fail. As you can imagine, I was totally floored given that we have been paying licensed professionals every step of the way on this bathroom remodel. The only thing we've done ourselves is the demo. Given my concern I decided to reach out to 2 separate tile professionals. They looked at my tub surround and told me that the work was just fine and that if I wanted to be extra cautious I could install a waterproofing membrane over the work. Both indicated though that the membrane really wasn't needed but they could do it if it would make me feel better. It made me feel like Mark was trying to pull a bit of a fast one on me so I asked him why he didn't recommend that option. He indicated that the mud work that was previously done was built up too much and it needed to be removed or there would be a lump in the tile which the membrane won't fix. Not only was this not mentioned while he was here, this is completely untrue. The wall is smooth and the others had zero problem with it. He also sent a follow-up email indicating that based on the work he saw he couldn't trust that the drywaller put the board up correctly and therefore that is why he recommended what he did. If I had put the durock up myself I would have been more likely to believe him but when I paid someone who has been doing this for over 35 years, it makes me feel like Mark was trying to take me for a ride on this one. Maybe he didn't want the job, I don't know. He was quick to critique the work of others in the bathroom. My electrician installed 4 can lights over my tub but Mark indicated that was too many before he knew it was done at my request. (Due to a beam that runs right down the middle of the tub.) I also asked Mark to give me an itemized quote so that I could decide what I could afford. I received a one sentence email quote with the $7K amount. This amount seems astronomical considering its fixing a toilet, putting down some sub floor, and tiling with materials I already own. Mark also forgot the quote to hang the TV.
Description of Work: We were in need of someone to repair the floor around our toilet (due to an old leaky toilet which rotted the floor), replace the flange, etc. We are in the middle of a bathroom remodel so the toilet was already pulled out and the floor opened up to see the damage. I also wanted a quote for labor to install tile and to install the cabinets (both I already purchased) as I figured it would make more sense just to have him finish the rest of the bathroom off rather than bring in a tile person then a contractor back again to put the cabinets in. In addition, I also asked him for a quote to hang our flat screen on our brick fireplace over the mantle.

Response from Mark Ellis Builders
Rarely do I respond to her review, but with this review I feel I have to. As I told the client not the customer but the client you cannot put tile over drywall joint compound it will break down shortly with water and the tiles will fall off the wall .I will reserve further comment on this review as it is immaterial

We hired Mark to replace a leaky, old kitchen skylight and couldn't be happier with how the job went. He was on top of it from the beginning: attentive to detail, prompt, thorough. And the final result was beautiful. He and his employees did excellent work, both exterior and interior. We are already hiring him to do another job for us.

Mark and his crew were extremely professional and dedicated and did a fantastic job on our work. They spent very long days in the house to try to get the work done as quickly as possible (to get us our house back) and were extremely diligent in paying attention to all of the details as they completed the project. The work inside and out turned out better than we even expected and I would quickly work with them again, or refer them to a friend, for another project.
Description of Work: We had Mark Ellis Builders perform work on both the outside and inside of the house. For our exterior, we had issues with wood rot, flashing, and siding that they fixed and then painted all of the wood on the exterior of the house. On the inside, after an issue with water damage, they tiled our kitchen and dining room and repainted about half of the first floor.

The project went very well. Mark was closely involved in every aspect of the job, was most often on site, and kept in excellent communication every step of the way. He consulted with us regularly as decisions had to be made and the overall quality of the work was excellent. We would definitely use his company again and would recommend it to others.

Great - see above. The price below ($800.00) is for the porch railing. The other work mentioned was completed last year. The reason I am not putting up photos is because I don't know how to do it.
Description of Work: Would I hire again? I already have. Mr. Ellis and his crew do an excellent job. Their work is great. They installed a hardwood floor and painted my downstairs walls. I have an approximately 1,000 square foot, two story condo. The downstairs is an open floor plan. They painted everything downstairs - walls and ceilings - and did an excellent job. I called them again recently to put in a handrail for my porch. I am having hip surgery and will need the railing when I get home. Also, winter is coming up and there will be ice. (This is Michigan, after all.) Their prices are more than reasonable. Also, if I ever need this type of service again, I would not hesitate to call them.

Mark Ellis and his crew did a fabulous job on my kitchen remodel! I had never remodeled anything before and Mark walked me through the whole thing. It was just what I needed. The crew was very friendly and conscientious. They even bonded with my dog. (She missed them when they were done.) They carefully covered all surfaces that could get dusty or walked on. Everything was done with care. As part of the remodel, some drywall was removed, more installed, taped mudded and painted. I was very impressed to see how meticulously the crew put up plastic to keep the sanding dust from the rest of the house and how carefully they mudded over the tape to make sure the seams didn't show. They don't. The painting was done with equal care. Even when I changed the color a couple of times. Mark went shopping with me a number of times, helping me decide on flooring, cabinets, etc. It was very helpful. There were a couple of small flaws here and there and Mark insisted on making it right by replacing entire doors. On his own dime! I will definitely hire Mark and his crew for any future projects. In fact, I'm starting my list now.

If you are looking for a building contractor for any improvement to your home, you could not do better than Mark Ellis Builders. We found him to be meticulous, conscientious, trustworthy, knowledgeable, observant, good natured, patient, respectful and responsive. Mark listened well to our opinions during every step of the process and provided valuable suggestions and guidance. The exterior of the house looks better than new with the care taken on the paint job. The master bathroom was a bigger job than we had anticipated as it needed to be completely gutted and rebuilt properly. The new bathroom is lovely with its new lighting and exhaust systems, rebuilt shower and Jacuzzi tub areas, and Mark’s exacting tile work that is simply exquisite. His crew cheerfully repainted the vanity area a couple of times until the color scheme was right and we were satisfied. Mark and his men were a pleasure to work with. I would recommend them wholeheartedly for any project. For all of the work that needed to be done, we consider the cost to be reasonable.
Description of Work: Mark Ellis and his capable crew were hired to make numerous repairs around the house including rotting exterior trim; the prep and painting of the entire exterior; the removal of railings; the gutting and remodeling of the master bath and vanity areas; painting the master bedroom; removal and replacement of the front concrete steps; gutter repairs; install basement dehumidifier; the replacement of fixtures and handles; and other smaller fixes.

We re-hired Mark Ellis Builders for our trim replacement project following their successful conversion of our dilapidated screened porch into a gorgeous sunroom last year. We anticipated excellent results again this year, and Mark Ellis and his crew met our high expectations in every respect. Mark's craftsmen installed the new exterior trim precisely and painted superbly, resulting in exceptional curb appeal for our home. All interior repairs, painting, hanging of precious artwork, and other miscellaneous tasks were completed efficiently and in accordance with the high aesthetic standards and craftsmanship that Mark's crew has always delivered when working in our home. Everyone assigned to our projects is professional, capable, energetic, and polite. The crew is highly-skilled, hardworking, and meticulous. They take pride in their work and a job well done. In addition to the impressive quality of their work, I especially appreciate their tidiness throughout every project and the overall care taken with my home and its contents. Mark Ellis is passionate about delivering the best possible results. He is a perfectionist whose wide-ranging skills and talents are too numerous to list. As a leader, he requires commitment, hard work, and top-notch quality. As a hands-on craftsman himself, he has a sharp eye for detail and design coupled with a keen aesthetic sense. Mark holds overhead costs to a bare minimum and takes measures to ensure efficiency. His work is worth every penny paid. Mark and his crew have earned our confidence and trust, and we look forward to engaging them for future projects over the long term.
Description of Work: Mark Ellis Builders' exterior work on our 3,600 square-foot home included removing extensive rotting trim and worn caulk; replacing trim and re-caulking; and painting all exterior trim (including chimney, front door, and mailbox post). Interior work required numerous wall and trim repairs and touch-up painting throughout the house; hanging 18 pieces of artwork; and installing 20 cabinet and drawer knobs.

These guys are GREAT! After Bruce's Handyman service left us hanging I wasn't sure I would be able to find anyone to get the work done before Guest's arrived. Mark was amazing! He got here the day I called him. He charged by the hour. He came 24 hours later with a crew and got it done! His workers were focused and moved quickly and got things done really fast! They were in and out and we now have what feels like a full, free day to ourselves! Plus they have ladders and could hang flood lights which Bruce's would not. So they were a one stop shop, capable of doing everything we needed including a tricky bed fix. Mark noticed a couple things I may want to do and was able to get that done too!!! They did TWICE the amount of work that Bruce's quoted and still came in under!! They were a delight to be around, did an excellent job. We will use Mark Ellis Builders every time!!!!

We had used Mark and his crew previously for maintenance and repairs on a different property in Ann Arbor (an 1890's historic building used as office in Ann Arbor) and decided to hire him to work on our 1980's home that needed a major kitchen and master bath remodel done. The kitchen job involved removal of a wall, removing and relocating two windows, installing two new windows, installing new cabinets, sink, range hood and backsplash. We bought cabinets and countertop through Lowes; counter was installed by Lowes; bought new flooring through Costco (installed by their contractor); had electrical done by a good electrician brought in by Mark; and Mark did the rest. The master bath was gutted and everything was replaced, and Mark and crew put in a ceramic tile shower, ceramic tile floor and trim, all new fixtures, tub, toilet and vanity. All flooring in the entire upper level of our two-story home was replaced and the entire upper story was repainted in the course of the project. The cathedral ceiling over 70% of our upper story was also modified by sanding down the textured finish and then re-texturing in a more subdued way. The work started near the end of May of 2016 and was completed near the end of August of 2016 - 3 months of total time. That was very frustrating, to be disrupted from our main living space for that long. We and Mark had hoped that it would go faster, but as is often the case with projects like this, there were many issues that came up and caused unexpected delays, mostly having to do with problems from prior work done by others. The ceiling texture issue was something we added midstream and both we and Mark regretted in the end because the texturing was originally done to hide poor drywall finishing, which became apparent and then had to be addressed. Mark was overly optimistic in his estimate of the amount of time that it would take; we were working with a best case estimate of 6 weeks. Had we known what to expect, this aspect would have been less frustrating. In the end, we are very happy with the work. Everything looks great. Mark told us that we would be happy with the work at the end and we definitely are. As sometimes is the case, things are not always right when they first go in, but he keeps plugging away until you are satisfied. The key is to communicate with him; he stands by his work and will make everything right. This was a big project and stretched him and his men to their limits. We used high-end materials and fixtures that required a high level of skill. Mark has a large crew and he and a few of his workers are significantly higher-skilled than others on the crew. That contributed to the time delay because he was working on other jobs and we think that some of the delay was due to juggling other work with ours. We started the project based on time and materials, with estimates of what it would cost. It cost more than we were expecting and as another commenter noted, this caused some anxiety for us. We ultimately agreed near the end of the job that Mark would finish with payment for the number of hours he estimated at that time were left in the job. It took him longer to finish than he estimated but he stuck by his word. In all, I highly recommend Mark Ellis Builders for quality of work and Mark's integrity. It was a rough ride at times, and it cost more than we wanted or expected to spend, but this kind of large job always is disruptive and expensive. As promised by Mark, the results were what we wanted, and we love our new house.

Mark Ellis Builders did a fine job at a reasonable price. It has rained several times since the gutter was replaced and the gutter now functions correctly; water is not spilling over the edge. The gutter was carefully graded towards the downspouts. I chose to apply the final coat of paint myself, and Mark Ellis Builders supplied me with a can of paint in the correct tint. It took a couple of months for Mark Ellis to find the time to do this job, since the company is apparently quite busy in the summer, but I am happy that I waited.

This was by far the worst experience I have had with a contractor – or any professional for that matter. Don't let his multiple A ratings on Angie's List fool you! The work was unprofessional and incredibly sloppy, thanks in particular to 2 particularly clueless members of his team that seemed to be the only folks he had working for him. They would show up for a fraction of a day and then leave. And then no one would show up again for days. When I met with Mark Ellis about the quality of the work (more than once) he said he had "no excuses" and promised repeatedly that things would get better, and that he would be on the job personally to supervise the work. Still, the work never got better and he seldom was on site. I eventually paid two other builders to come an evaluate the work, with one saying that although the job wasn't the worst he had ever seen, but it was pretty close. They seemed to have no clue how to center the new kitchen window between two cupboards (it is off by several inches). The cupboards were moved, and then moved again. In some areas they did more harm than good, damaging siding, gouging trim and breaking a window. They also installed cedar siding that failed to match the surface of the rest of the house. The boards were not attached correctly and so the caulking cracked two days after it was applied. There were no drip ledges installed above the windows. Other siding was not properly attached to the house and I can pull it away. The list could go on and on. After more than two and half months of this guy (not helped by the fact I had to be out of town frequently) I got suspicious and found out that even though Angie's List says he is licensed and insured, the State of Michigan regulatory website (and yes, I even called to make sure) has no record of him, his business or his address having a license in Michigan. You can look for yourself at https://www.lara.michigan.gov/colaLicVerify/ He is also not registered with the City of Ann Arbor. At this point I fired him. I have had to hire another builder to redo much of the work and am really taking a hit moneywise on this project. The state and the city of Ann Arbor have been notified about his lack of a license. Oh, and after I fired him, he never came to pick up tools and other items he left at my house. Run fast and far from Mark Ellis "Buliders." In the interest of fairness, I will say the paint job in my bedroom and the carpeting was done to my satisfaction, although I believe someone else did the painting (wish he would have sent those guys back again) and Lowe's laid the carpet.

Mark responded almost immediately to our initial calls and emails to schedule meeting time and give us an estimate. It worked out mostly smoothly; he's kind, polite and very knowledgeable, answered all of our questions thoroughly and helped us to set up priorities and scope of the work. With his estimation, we could have a fully renovated master bathroom and a fixed laundry room in two weeks, plus some quick tile cleaning and re-caulking in guest bathroom. The only thing that surprise us a bit was the price; his quote hit at upper edge of our remodeling budget but he emphasized firmly that he would deliver quality work; with his good reputation from angies list, we decided to give him the job. In short, quality is surely Mark's strong point; all the work is performed professionally in the end, and he with his crew respond to our opinions fast. For some flaws or unsatisfactory bits we pointed out, they delivered precise and quick fix. We are happy about the final result. The whole project took about three weeks instead of two; and we eneded up paying $1200 more because of extra work needed in repairing laundry room floor and re-plumbing of master bathroom, although Mark and us orally agreed in the start that he would take care of any surprises occurred, with the initial price firm. Time and price control will definitely be the two aspects that we would hope to have more if working with Mark in the future.
Description of Work: Remodel master bathroom; Fix floor of laundry room (previous water penetration in one corner) and put on new tiles; clean and re-caulking guest bathroom.

Great. Mark and his team do all my work around the house. I have a couple of steps leading up to my front porch that due to their slope don't require handrails, but I have a lot of older folks visiting my home and it was a hazard. Mark and his team designed the handrails, had me pick out the uprights and then created and installed them. They are perfect. Visitors love them. They go with the house. And they do exactly what they should. I should note that my yard is terrible clay and they had to auger and then hand dig the holds for the posts to do to depth, a miserable job. I wanted 3 raised bed garden beds for the back yard. I found a design on pinterest, told Mark I wanted something close. Pointed out the aspects that were important. They got the supplies, built the beds and installed them in the yard. And also got the dirt and had them filled. I should note, I have a walkout basement, so going from my front to back yard is very steep and doing it with wheel barrels of dirt is quite a chore. Mark's team are polite and pleasant. My parents live with me and I have pets. I never worry about any of the guys being less than great to deal with. They clean up and are careful with our home. I highly recommend Mark and team.
Description of Work: Installed handrails for my front porch to make the entry stairs more safe. Built raised bed garden beds.

Mark responded immediately to my first call, came out, gave me a quote and then started the job within the window he said he would begin. Mark and his crew did a wonderful job. The woodwork on our front porch was not as damaged as we thought, so he only had to clean it up, prime and paint. It was great to have him honestly do the work that was needed. The work on our garage was very well done also. It is an older garage and the side door is not the normal size made anymore so his crew had to do some carpentry work to put a new one in. All of the work was done on time, Mark was clear and had very good communication about when they would be coming. The work areas were cleaned up each day. We will definitely work with Mark again on future home improvements.
Description of Work: Work on our garage, replaced side door, repaired and painted 4 windows and garage door. Work on front entrance, painted woodwork around front entrance.

Mark and his guys were very easy to work with. They provided quality work including remodeling, finish carpentry and painting. Mark was always available and provided great communication and solutions to any problem or add on I identified. We have additional interior and exterior work to be completed in the future and I will definitely use them again. Thanks Mark and crew... we couldn't be any happier.
