I was more than satisfied with Mark's outstanding and thorough work. Mark took the time to explain his thought process and helped me make decisions. He would even meet me at the store to look at ideas he had in mind. He knew what was best for my house, and I ended up trusting his judgment more than Itrusted my own - and this proved to be the right thing to do every time. His standard of work was actually higher than my own.Where I might have been willing to compromise on quality, Mark was not. Mark and his crew always left my house in better shape than when they started working - cleaning up, wiping down, moving furniture, even organizing my garage ---- everything left perfect every time, Mark's workmanship and attention to detail were superior to any contractor I've worked with. Mark always did what was right. Even though some of the details and costs were not covered in his original estimate, he didn't let that stop him from creating our shared vision of my bathroom masterpiece. Most important, Mark's integrity is above reproach. He's an honest and outstanding example of commitment, fairness and personal kindness. It would be my honor to work with Mark and his crew again in the future.

Mark and his guys did a really good job. They came every morning, worked hard, did good work, and cleaned up well after themselves. They also gave us suggestions of how we could make the bathroom look good and then made it look very good. We are very happy with the work that they did.

I was so fortunate to find Mark Ellis Builders on Angie’s List. Unlike other contractors, he responded immediately to give me a bid to tile a bar area backsplash. When he came over to inspect the area, he put me totally at ease with his easy going manner and tile work knowledge. When he scheduled the work he did tell me he had another job going and beginning my work would depend on how far along he was on the other. I certainly appreciated his open and honest communication. In fact, whenever I had a question, he responded to my email within minutes...sure liked that!!! The type of tile we chose was a bit difficult to install, yet Mark remained upbeat and made me feel like it was all going to turn out beautifully....and it did! He really seems to strive for excellence. My husband and I were impressed with his work and the assistants he sent to do the grouting were great too. The fact that they had wonderful things to say about Mark’s work ethic when he wasn’t even here told me alot about him. I would never hesitate to call Mark to work at our home in the future. A real gem of a find...and don’t worry about the clean up! It was picture perfect too!

It all went extremely well. From my very first contact with Mark Ellis Builders by email via Angie's List to the end of the job I was very satisfied. Mark, the owner has excellent communication skills and prompt with returning emails regarding the project. Email/smartphone was the form of communication used most of the time and very efficient. Mark and his crew were right on time as planned and worked steadily start to finish. The project arrangement was for time and materials and very clearly stated. I was impressed and very pleased at how meticulous each step was undertaken. During the tear down of the rotten wood Mark suggested I consider treated lumber for the framing instead of pine that was used before. His concern was not being able to prime/paint right away if I did choose treated lumber even though it would be a superior choice to pine. I appreciated his consulting with me and did choose the treated lumber and happy with my decision. We have other projects on the horizon and look forward to hiring Mark Ellis Builders for the job. Did I mention how fine the clean up was ? I saw Mark and 2 other workers walking in a line studying the ground. I thought they has lost something. No, they were making sure there were no nails or other small sharp objects left on the ground.
Description of Work: Mark Ellis and his crew took out a rotting door frame around the garage door and replaced with new before our new garage door was installed. His crew also did some clean up work in the garage and took down the drop ceiling.

Through a special deal on Anglie’s List, we engaged Mr. Ellis and his crew to do a number of home repairs, which included recaulking a bathtub, adjusting and replacing door latches, installing a grab bar in one of our bathrooms, cleaning a sticky banister, and fixing a loose sump pump installation. We also requested the installation and painting of a new front door, hanging hat and coat hooks in the hall, and loosening tight faucet handles in the bathroom. With one exception, all went smoothly. In the instance of the bathroom faucets, there was some difficulty, which took several weeks to resolve. While everybody can agree that having things go smoothly is optimaI, it’s in the difficulties that we really come to appreciate commitment and persistence. With graciousness and dedication, Mr. Ellis saw to resolving the plumbing problem, and throughout the process, kept in contact with us regarding progress toward the resolution. As a result of this experience, I would offer my sincere recommendation—not only for the quality of work performed, but also for Mr. Ellis’ professional integrity. We were pleased to have the opportunity to work with him, and hope to do so again.

They evaluated the problem and believe the problem I had in the winter time with cold air entering the kitchen and wall (freezing the pipe) could have been due to ice or snow on the roof over a window near the vent exit, that could have temporarily kept the flap frozen/nonfunctional in the winter, but was not a problem now. No repairs were done, as none were assessed as currently necessary. Honesty was appreciated.

This guy is a complete joke; I imagine that the folks he employs do good work, but I wouldn't know as he quoted a job for me to paint the exterior of my home, provided a work order and then fell off the face of the planet. I reached out to him early in the Spring so that I could get my house painted and prepped for sale. He asked that I email him in lieu of calls for communication. Early communication and the bid itself went well. He met my husband at the house for the estimate, and they discussed not only the exterior painting job, but a spigot repair on the back of the house and new gutters. He provided a quote of $3500 for the work. Since it included the gutters, it seemed reasonable; even though it was much higher (by over $1000) than other quotes I received. I negotiated with him and was able to get the price down to $3000 and he stated that he used quality products and that the work would be done to the highest standards possible. He seemed like a good guy, so I gave the go ahead. I asked for work order to be provided, which took almost a week. When I received it, it did not include the spigot or the gutters. I figured it was an oversight and emailed him back immediately. He responded back stating that he didn't include that with the scope of work. I confirmed with my husband again and had him email with Mark. He insisted it was not included again and that my husband had made a mistake. At that point we decided to proceed with the work even without the gutter work, but it left us with an odd feeling. Weeks later I had emailed him again and again to see when he would be starting the job; it was always an excuse: "We need the weather to cooperate so we can plan around it!", "We are about 3 weeks out, the weather should be better by then as well!" Then, complete silence. I tried his phone number, I emailed many times...nothing. I got other folks out for estimates and hired another painter, but Mark Ellis' horrible service and responsiveness has slowed down my ability to sell my home. I've worked with other contractors, and this is the first time this has occurred. Finally, this past weekend I received a message from his email account; he had been hacked and the email was requesting help & a favor. The irony of receiving this email is not lost on me. He sent out a mass email with every one of his customer's email addresses exposed to the entire distribution list. If anyone needs to send out a promotional email for painting, we all have that list available now. He is unprofessional and unresponsive. Take your money elsewhere.

Mark and his crew completed the work as requested. We couldn't be happier with the results. They were organized and efficient. They came when they said they would, completed the work on time, and cleaned up the worksite every day before leaving. The paint on the outside looks spectacular! This portion of the home improvement went so well that we're asking Mark and his crew to perform interior modernization/upgrade work and to paint the entire interior of our home. Mark's ability to suggest materials and paint colors is most helpful. Bravo, Mark Ellis Builders!
Description of Work: We contacted Mark to do several much needed repairs to the exterior of our home prior to painting the entire exterior. Hi [member name removed], I apologize for the misunderstanding. When we met and before I left your home nothing was concrete.. you were still ruminating on many different ideas. I asked you to go to Lowe's to pick out tiles for utility room and get back to me. You never did. I"m not sure where the confusion lies but it was never my intention to disregard your job. I didn't think we were at the "quote" stage in so far as, it was not made clear to me what the quote would be for. Mark

Mark is a high-energy guy, very friendly and professional. Offered good advice on choosing color and product. It was pricey, but it was a somewhat challenging job that ended up requiring 3 coats. He came with a crew of 2 guys on time early the next morning, and they did a great job and were very careful with moving and protecting furniture and making sure everything was in order before they left. Very happy and would use again.

Mark Ellis responded promptly to my initial enquiry and this was characteristic of my experience with him to date. He is responsive transparent and very pleasant. I enjoy doing business with him. Mark gave me advanced notice of when he would be able to work on my home and he and his team were punctual each day that they came. The team worked efficiently and got a lot done in one and half days. I was very impressed. Plus everyone on the team seemed polite and professional. To my untrained eye the quality of the work appears very high. Mark explained to me everything that he did and showed me the materials that he planned to use. The billing was clear with no extra charges or surprise additions. In fact a screen that was accidentally damaged during the work was replaced free of charge. Once the work was compete the team cleaned up thoroughly. I have already asked Mark to return for a different job.
Description of Work: Replaced rotten wood on the exterior of the home, painted and caulked as needed.
I had read in other reviews that Mark brings great ideas to the job and this is true. I was getting ready to put my house on the market. He provided good ideas on what to do as well as checks on things I was planning on but that wouldn't provide payback during the sales. This actually saved me money. Everyone on the crew was hard working and courteous. They worked over the weekend to complete the job and then came back after the carpet was installed to move the furniture back into the bedrooms.
Description of Work: Helped prepare house for sale. Removed old carpeting and tile, repainted and coordinated re-carpeting of hallway, bedrooms. Repainted bathroom. Refinished decks and other interior woodwork. Power rinsed exterior. Trimmed up the yard.

I have been very pleased to date. Working with Mark has been great. His attention to detail is excellent and he is proactive about what needs to be done. His team is good and respectful of my family and our property. When I have had a couple of things that I was not pleased with, Mark is open to the feedback and corrects each item immediately. They are not the least expensive company out there, but after having some work done by others, the rate is worth the quality. The thing I most appreciate about Mark is he provides his feedback about my requests, meaning he doesn’t just do what I ask if it doesn’t make sense, we discuss it and then determine how to move forward. Part of what I am paying for is expertise and it is appreciated. I highly recommend Mark Ellis Builders. I have since moved in, we have some tasks outstanding, because I either haven't ordered the materials or they haven't arrived yet. Mark came by the house the other day to review the outstanding list, along with new items that I have added to the list post-move-in. Mark told me he will not charge me for this miscellaneous list, which is fantastic. Lots of little things that would take me much more time than 1-2 guys on his crew can move through quickly. I appreciate Mark's flexibility. When all the materials come in, we will schedule a day to have all of the work finished. I have no concerns about follow-up or quality. Mark and his team have been out a couple of times to finish up the work. I am very pleased. From the beginning to the end of the process, I recommend Mark Ellis builders. Good guys that do a nice job. I highly recommend them.
Description of Work: I just purchased a new home, where I will live with my parents. My father can't go up and down the stairs. Originally I had planned to purchase a chair lift to allow him to get to the upper level, but the prohibitive cost of a chairlift with a curve in it ($12k!), got me to rethink the plans. We ended up combining a first floor laundry room and ½ bath, turning it into a full bath with shower and stackable laundry. Mark and his team are wrapping up a variety of items in my new home: combining a laundry room and 1/2 bath into a full bath (with custom shower) and stackable laundry – he helped brainstorm and come up with the plan – demolition, rework the plumbing and electrical and rebuild the space painting of the entire house, main 2 floors, full finished basement and garage – 13 colors total – including drywall prep, cleanup, etc. many, (many) handyman activities – installing ceiling fans, installing aluminum ramp (purchased from craigslist), installing and fixing locks, installing rods and shelves in walk-in closet, installing door closers, correcting and reapplying caulk where needed, installing shelves, fire extinguishers, lock boxes and other miscellaneous tasks.

I thought me and a few people could do it ourselves but my group backed out. I contacted Mark and he scheduled a day, then it rained for a few days. Finally after the weather cleared, he and his crew were here on time. Did a wonderful job - I kept staring at the covering and the craftsmanship - it's like a work of art IMO. He was on constant contact with me either by phone or email sometimes 2-3 times a day as we tried to figure out the weather. I was like a scene out of Yard Crashers - all the cars pulled up right at 7:30 - equipment was set up and work began. They got it up in about 9.5 hours, and it looks and works great. We just had a storm roll through with some heavy rain, for the first time in 10 years I could walk out my patio door without getting wet! I can't say enough about Mark. He was upfront about everything. When it came time to settle up, he did the math in front of me. He showed me the receipts of the extra materials he had to buy throughout the day. Nothing was hidden. He answered every question I had, even offered a few suggestions regarding gutters and down spouts. I would recommend Mark Ellis Builders to anyone. His rate was no different than all the other companies I contacted. If you want great service, upfront honesty, constant communication, then Mark Ellis Builders is who you need to contact.

I purchased the Big Deal in September 2013. Mark did stop by and look at the project and suggested a bunch of additional work that went beyond the scope of what I had asked for. After that it was a series of emails and responses of "I'm in the middle of a BIG project, contact me in two weeks". Once the weather turned bad, I stopped trying because it's an outside project. Once the weather broke this spring, I tried one more time and got the same response. I waited two weeks and tried again and heard nothing. Mark seems like a really nice guy, perhaps he's just over-extended or he has no time for smaller projects.

Response from Mark Ellis Builders
Hi [Member name removed], You are correct... I tend to over-extend myself. During the period that we met, Ellis Builders was very busy but more importantly, everyone wanted their projects done immediately. I have since hired a few more dependable workers that can help with the "smaller jobs" and additional work but I recognize that does not help you now. I'm truly sorry that I was unable to do your project and that your "Big Deal" purchase was cancelled.
We are new to the area and were looking for someone that could become a handyman for small and large jobs. Mark and his team have exceeded expectations. We will definitely keep using him for future jobs. The diversity in the work that Mark and his team can accomplish is comforting knowing that finding a trustworthy, friendly, yet professional handyman can be a difficult task in itself. What we appreciated most, is the attention to detail in honest, simple to understand explanations so that we (the owners) could make effective decisions.

It went well. they fixed the problem. I had to pay a bit extra because the job required more time than the deal I purchased. It was fine and fair. We found mark and his employees to be so professional we hired them immediately to do a large paint job. Then we added on deck work and landscape grading correction. workmen were polite and neat. I wished I would have found this company before we had our kitchen redone. They would have done a much better job as we are still hassling to get some of the mistakes and omissions by the other company corrected. I would not hesitate to get quotes from mark ellis for any future work we are considering. Great job!!!!

Working with Mark was a great experience. He proposed different ideas and configurations to the problems we had in the basement. He had suggestions in remodeling that gave the room a totally updated look. Example: The ceiling was very low, with those old ceiling tiles from the 1950's. He suggested remove all of them, expose the ductwork, and spray paint the ductwork. My initial reaction was of skepticism but he was confident I would love it and I do. It lifted the ceiling dramatically and gave an appearance of what you see in modern restaurants. ( Another contractor had given the suggestion of removing the old tiles and replacing the ceiling with new dry wall. That method would have been more expensive and basically the ceiling would have been low again and the concern of having access to the ductwork if repairs were needed. ) Another problem we had was being able to move furniture into or out of the basement. The low ceiling and placement of the door into the basement only allowed small pieces to be moved in. My tenant needed complete use and ease of moving her furniture into this room. Suffice to say Mark came up with a new idea when he saw our place immediately. Throughout the course of this remodel Mark had suggestions that were smart and efficient but he was never overbearing. He stayed in touch with me every step of the way and at times he would ask me to go to Lowes and pick out carpet, bathroom tiles, etc. and to give him the item # so that he could make the purchase with his contractor discount. All in all working with Mark was a pleasure. As I write this review the last portion of the remodel is being done, laying the carpet down. Mark was going to be busy with another remodel but he did not want my husband or myself to have to wait inside an empty home while this 4-6 hour job was being performed. He had a relative there to oversee this and clean any mess left by the carpet layers. We have been so impressed with Mark that we are going to hire him for work to be done in our own home.
Description of Work: We had a remodel done on our basement and bathroom downstairs. Extensive work was needed. We had contacted several contractors from Angie's List and Mark was the most responsive. With one phone call he was there to look at what we needed done and to submit a quote. Because this home is a rental we were in a time crunch to get the job done with a tenant moving in April 15th. Within 2 business days Mark had his crew there.

I was a bad experience overall. He did not know how to do a dishwasher installation under a granite countertop. He glued it to the granite countertop, which is not the correct way to install it. Problem escalated when I continued to try to contact Andre Griswold, a former (though that wasn't disclosed to me, until I asked Mr. Ellis) Ellis Construction employee who noticed when he first examined the dishwasher, that it was never properly installed. Mark Ellis didn't inform me that Andre Griswold no longer worked for him. Mark Ellis took it upon himself to install parts that Andre Had me order, but these parts had nothing to do with the installation, but were a cutlery basket and the cap for the rinse aid dispenser. So Mark Ellis, under an incorrect assumption that these parts were for the installation proceeded to glue the dishwasher --however, the left side of his gluing has already come loose. I found guides for installing a dishwasher under a granite countertop by doing a simple search online. I had used Andre Griswald in the past, and he did wonderful work but when I spoke to Mark Ellis about him, I found out that he wasn't even with the company any longer. The moment that Mark Ellis knew that the employee who did so much good work for me, and was really the reason that I wanted Mark Ellis Builders in the first place; the moment that Andre Griswold had severed ties with the company, I should have been informed, but wasn't until I asked Mark Ellis about Andre--as I'd done in a number of emails, but I never heard from Andre Griswold directly. Finally, Mark Ellis told me that instead of going through Andre, I'd have to go through him, and then I was told that Andre Griswold had severed ties with Mark Ellis Builders. I had blinds installed, and they are already falling apart. A Handyman, hired from elsewhere, repaired the blinds on the sliding door in just minutes. Of particular note are mini blinds in the master bedroom that don't actually keep out the light, as was the intention. These will have to be replaced. It should also be noted that many of the door handles are loose. And smoke detectors were to be installed throughout the house, t weren't. At this point, I'd prefer that another company --not from Angie's List, with whom I'me extremely disappointed, make my house what I'd like for it to be, with my budget. I do appreciate that Mark Ellis discovered a gas leak in the basement; I called DTE who repaired it, and I'm aware that there's trash n the basement (a good deal of trash), but I'll deal with this as I must, using another company --I must part ways with Angie's List! I'm grateful for the finding of the gas leak, but I still would prefer doing business with another company not on Angie's List. I do not like the incomplete nature of ceiling fan installation; this work is incomplete, as my shortness demands other ways of accessing operational features of these fans. Ad speaking of challenges to my height, that Handyman I mentioned observed how I have ladders in every room, even to access the microwave oven and he suggested moving it to a location that wouldn't squire climbing to use it. He also suggested lowering the cabinets in the laundry room so that I can us them. Mak Ellis Construction didn't comment on this at all. . Mark Ellis also used the opportunity to promote his wife's business to me, and I don't appreciate that at all. All electrical outlets have yet to be accounted for; the Handyman is addressing this also. Now as for the bookshelf track lighting: these black strips of lights (mind you, I did erroneously approve) are attached to the fronts of the bookshelves themselves, controlled by hideous-looking black control boxes (bookshelves are a lint oak color, and freestanding; I brought them here; they aren't attached to the walls). Although I approved it, it looks horrible --and must be removed. No way will I allow this group of workers to repair my gazebo or paint the exterior and interior of the house. The Handyman's company has already explored installing lighting from the bedroom upstairs or at least on the walls or ceiling in the room where the bookshelves are. I'm a writer, and most of what I owb=n is books, and I plan to use the gazebo as a place to write --thee areas are important to me. Problem with Andre Griswold is that his seems to be a start-up company, and I can't be a test case for ArtFire no matter that I found Andre Griswold personable and honest. As for Mary Dean, wife of Mark Ellis and owner of Magpie Cleaning Services, when I met her, she brought her toddler with her, and I didn't know he was coming. No matter how "cute" he may be, no way to conduct business during an introduction. She saw the work on the dishwasher and seemed quite apologetic, asking me to give Mark Ellis an opportunity to correct the problem. I was offended by the presence of the toddler, the unexpected toddler who was there. When the time comes for me to hire a cleaning service, it won;t be Magpie. No harm in companies referring business to each other, but seemed rather planned to me: Mark Ellis builds and/or remodels/repairs, and Magpie (owned by Mary M. Dean, wife of Mark Ellis cleans up (both literally and figuratively). "Big Deal" seems to offer Mark Ellis a way to get his foot in the door, and then offer more expensive services --that the client is free to ignore, I didn't, and that's my fault --I realize that... but these additional and more expensive services, such as the dishwasher installation and bookshelf lighting, is subpar. I expect better. And once in the door, much easier to sell more expensive services --and some of us --like me-- are vulnerable. So I'm finished with Mark Ellis Builders and with Angie's List.
Description of Work: I had him come install my dishwasher and some blinds around the house and all the ceiling fans in almost every room. Bookshelf track lighting

I am truly sorry for your displeasure with our services...All work described was what you had asked us to do.. The dishwasher was installed incorrectly prior to our visit. The worker I had no longer worked for my company and I could not disclose the reasons for parting ways, nor was I obligated to. In our discussions you told me you needed a thorough house cleaning. My wife owns and operates a cleaning business, recommending her was an obvious choice for me. I would have erred to do otherwise. Please know that any time a customer is not pleased with our work or any dealings between us I take it very seriously. Going forward I will take all information you given me and make better decisions.

The owner and the electrician showed up on my place on time which is high recommended. However, the later work performed by the electrician is not what I expected. I have 8 switches for replacement, and 7 are made by Lutron, and the rest is belkin wemo. It took the electrician 6 hours to installed 6 switches and 3 light fixture and 1 light fixture half done. For all Lutron switches, it advised on its website that around 15 min per switches for installation. So for 7 Lutron, it should take 105 min. Then I have a belkin wemo, which is also not too bad for installation. Consider that is another 15 min. Within 2 hours, I should except all my switches installed. For replace a light fixture, since this is just un-wiring and re-wiring process, except 20 min per light fixture for install. The total time for 4 light fixture should around 80 min. Right now if we only consider the estimate working time for this project, within 3.5 hours, the work should all done. If consider the time I talking the electrician, with around 4 hours, the project should be outset. However, the reality is 6 hours without finish.....And also, the electrician did not read all my Lutron installtaion manul, and installing them with his experiences, which caused some troubles for him. Finially the owner is agreed I only pay 2 hour extra instead of 4-hour extra beside the Angies' list deal which is good for me. But next time if I would ask them for estimate a time first before project starts, since the installer sometimes do not read the item manul will cause extra time for him to figure out the tricks.

I really liked working with Mark and his guys. They were punctual, friendly, clean and enthusiastic. I loved that they were able to educate me as well, and seemed to be experts at what they do. My only complaint is that I ended up spending double what I thought I would, which I hadn't budgeted for. I hear this happens often for remodel projects and I am new at this, but it makes it difficult to plan and therefore makes me reticent starting new projects. He had given me a very low price to begin with which is one of the reasons I hired him, but I ended up spending as much as I would have had I hired anyone else. The level of work and professionalism was high though and I was able to pay him with a credit card, which I appreciated very much, so I didn't mind too much.

The owner, Mark, was in constant contact with me and personally picked up the faucets. The two gentlemen, Joe and (I apologize for not remembering his name), were very professional and efficient in their work. I am already planning on hiring them for a separate bathroom job, which Mark already gave an estimate for. Very satisfied with the service.
Description of Work: Replaced faucets in the kitchen and bathroom, plus a shutoff valve in the kitchen.

Mark Ellis says he’s licensed for his trade. I asked if he was licensed for his trade because I couldn’t find any licenses on record with the state. I have yet to receive definite answer other than he is not licensed for major plumbing jobs. It took them 4 hours to get the 3 bathrooms fixtures installed. They tried charging us $65 per hour per person after the Big Deal was used. We never stated that we wanted 2 workers coming out. The 2 men that installed the faucets installed the handles backwards, the drain was leaking on one, and the stopper wasn’t working on another. There were also a few scratches on our marble countertops. My wife recognized one of the workers that had come to our home. He looked like someone that was on the s** offender registry. His name matched as I had asked for his last name. There is no one else in the area that matches his name or description. UPDATE: Mark Ellis called me to say this was a very damaging review. I asked if he did a background check on his employees, and he replied with "I have known these guys for years". I asked him why he responded to my review saying his employees are vetted when he doesn't do any kind of check on his employees. He would not answer. I asked him the names of his employees, and he gave them but would not give their date of birth because he did not know. I asked Mark if he had any licenses, and he would not answer stating "I can see this is going nowhere". I received a second call from Mark about ten minutes after the first saying that his wife checked the internet, and in fact, his employee was a s** offender. Mark even asked his employee, and his employee admitted the fact. Though Mark said he was going to terminate this employee immediately, this just proves that Mark is not an honest business owner. He never did any background check on the people he sent out to my house where my wife and baby were alone. A simple internet search is all Mark needed to confirm that my "accusations" were actually the truth. He probably should have done that before he typed up his untruthful response. The bottom line is Mark is just trying to make a quick buck. He doesn't care about honesty or integrity.
Description of Work: They installed fixtures on 3 bathroom sinks, hooked up water lines and got them all running.

I'm sorry you are dissatisfied. As I explained, it was $65. per man hour (each man hour) Since you didn't have all your parts and fixtures on site there was only a limited amount we could do (as we explained to you). All my guys are vetted and have been with me for years.. None of them are offenders, I can assure you and those types of accusations are very damaging and uncalled for. Again, I am truly sorry you are dissatisfied and I will look at ways to improve these experiences in the future.
