Called and was assured that I would receive a call within 2 days. I even gave them an out knowing that this was a small job and allot of companies are busy or it is not worth their while. The receptionist assured me someone would call within 2 days. They were working down the street. It has been 3 weeks no call no show. Honesty would have been the best policy. No show no call and The results are an honest unfavorable review. In

The work went fine, but only a few months later the new bricks began to crumble and fall apart. Now, it looks about the same as before, but TKO won't answer our phone calls or return our voicemails about repairing the work they did.

The old chimney which was deteriorating was taken down. New bricks, cap, screen and flues were put in. Very punctual and informative. Our neighbor's drive way was close to project and they made sure the neighbor knew that work would be done, and cars should be moved out of driveway. They said it would take two days, and that is what it took. All questions were answered promptly. Workmen showed up on time. Finished chimney and porch column look very nice. Fireplace was used once after the project and everything worked correctly. I would use this family owned company again for any masonry work. Adam Williams was the spokesperson and salesman for this job and was there when the work was done. We thought the price was reasonable for the amount of work to be done.
Description of Work: Rebuilt brick chimney with new bricks after taking old bricks and flues out. Put on new cap for water run off and new screen. Tuckpoint porch column.

The abridged version (in case you're in a hurry) The work they did was fine (as far as I can tell). What they didn't do (and why) far outweighs that, though. I wouldn't recommend them and have ruled them out for additional projects we're planning. The long version The job was supposed to take a day and a half. At the end of the first day, the porch and steps were done. They had also removed most of the stonework for the flower box. This left some additional stones, some metal wiring, as well as all the dirt itself just sitting against the house, spilling over, and looking rather unpleasant. Fortunately, that was the end of the first day and the remainder of the work likely would go swimmingly. Unfortunately, the rest never happened. About a week later I started getting calls for payment, while I was still waiting for the job to be finished. I asked about the flower box, which is still a pile of dirt and debris against my house. I assumed that they had sent someone with a truck come by to clear what's left but the driver had forgotten and the back office didn't know. They explained to me that they did not take the dirt or clear the debris for the flower box intentionally and had no plans to do so. Taking that as well as the rest of the waste (porch & flower box bricks) would have required them to load up the truck twice and make two trips. Even after talking this out on the phone, they did not understand my problem and insisted that they were done. In hindsight, I probably should have asked how much it costs per trip and just paid the extra to get it taken care of, since now I'll be doing that over my weekend. Unfortunately, I didn't think of that and don't really care to talk to them anymore. While I was still on the phone with them, though, I then asked about the minor repair to my garage. I had hoped that it was simply forgotten and once reminded they would realize the mistake and make it right. They had planned on doing this work on the second day, but because they had "finished" the first day they were unable to find the time to get it done. Again, they saw no problem with this. If the job was just my porch, this review would have probably been very good. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Overall, what I've seen makes me question the thoroughness and care for their work. I can't imagine leaving something in such an obviously poor state because I don't want to take the time to clean it up. Perhaps worse is simply skipping the smallest part of the job because it's not worth my time anymore. They've been around for a while, so I have to assume that all of their work is no so poor. The porch work indicates (from what I can see) that they have the potential to do good work. But, they don't seem to care about satisfying customers or following through if it involves more than one trip. About the Ratings I struggled with the ratings because of the weirdness of the job. They were very professional and prompt at the beginning and on the first day. The quality of the porch appears pretty good and the price (for what I thought I was getting) was a price I was happy with. Again, had the job been just the porch the ratings would have been very different. The price took a hit since I'm paying for work they didn't do and now I'll be spending a few hours cleaning up what they didn't want to bother with. The quality took a hit based on the flower box and skipping the garage work. Maybe I shouldn't penalize what they didn't do, but feel that quality of the job includes such things. Responsiveness took a hit based on the complete lack of follow through even when presented with the problems. Whenever I had a concern, they didn't care. When they did show up, they were very prompt and worked quickly. I didn't reduce punctuality for the times they didn't show up. Professionalism was very high at the start and through the work they did do. Unfortunately, it was severely lacking in the follow through and completely absent in regards to making things right. I gave credit for what they did do well at the start, thus not an "F". As for the overall ratings, I feel that the experience was actually worse than the sum of it's parts. Despite the things they did well, I can't stomach what they didn't do, which is now going to be a combination of me finishing some of the job and finding new companies to finish the work I can't do.
Description of Work: Replace the bricks in our porch where they had been blown out in the winter. Replace the concrete steps to the porch, which were starting to crumble. Remove a flower box. Repair some damaged bricks on my garage.

Tom came out to give us a quote on some masonry work at the top of our chimney as well as some tuck pointing. We also got a quote for doing some repair to the walls in our basement (to have some cracks filled and sealed) and having the walls that are exterior to the house painted (in the basement). We had gotten one other quote previously, and we felt Tom's price was fair. He also was very forthcoming about his opinions on what actually needed to be done and what wasn't. The work started on time based on the availability we discussed. Tom's team was very clean and at the end of each day made sure that all of their mess was cleaned up before they left for the day. At the end of their first day of work, I asked a question about having something else done, and he suggested a better way to do it. The next day my fiance spoke with him and he had brought the supplies for the project just in case and gave another fair price, so we had that done as well (sealing the line between the driveway and the house to prevent water from seeping in). We also talked to him the second day about adding gutter cleaning to his list, and again, we were given a fair price. Tom also never tried to charge us for anything that wasn't needed. In our original quote, he mentioned that we might need new limestone for the chimney. Once he got up there, he said that what we had was in good shape and there was no need to replace it (even though he had the new limestone with him already). All work was completed in a timely manner, and the quality of everything seems to be really good. I would highly recommend them to anyone, and they will be our first call if/when we have more projects come up that we need done.

TKO was repairing a porch a few houses up the street so I asked them for a quote. A short while later Tom came down and gave me a quote for $450. I contacted three other providers but they could not be bothered with such a small job. I called Tom back and he performed the work the following day. The steps look great, they finished promptly and cleaned up after themselves. I would definitely use them again.

I have gotten a lot of broken promises and excuses for him not coming out to do the work. He did get one man to look at the job who offered to get the interior work done before the exterior work. I refused because it made no sense to repair plaster damaged by a roof leak until he fixed the roof leak per the proposal. Another excuse was a major storm in our area that brought a lot ofwork to his company. The storm was 2 months after I signed his proposal so I should have been well ahead of those jobs. In September Joe promised that the work would be done by the end of the month. Again, no show and no call. Today 10/18/2014 I gave him an ultimatum via text message that I needed workers here by next week or I would post a review documenting his failure to follow through and get the job done. I received a belligerent voice mail back with the new excuse that his brother is ill with cancer and that is more important than his work. He also stated that I had nothing to review because he did not take a deposit and impinged on my character for going public with my complaint. I can either wait for him whenever he can do the job or hire someone else. After 4 months of being patient and polite despite a string of broken promises, I think I have been more than reasonable. If he didn't take a deposit to try to get out of an agreement at some future date, I would question his veracity. Maybe he was having a bad day and didn't really mean what he said. Who knows? Winter is coming and I need my roof repaired.
Description of Work: On 6/14/2014 Joe Murray provided a reasonable estimate for a number of handyman repairs to be completed on my home. I signed his proposal and offered to give him a deposit which he refused because he didn't need it and could get the work done in very short order. I anticipated a July completion. The work included a kitchen ceiling repair, trim around a door, wet plaster repair in 2 places, repair 3 roof leaks, re-roof a dust porch, replace a gutter and downspout, and rehang another gutter/downspout.

TKO HOME MAINTENANCE CO. 14921 E. 10 MILE ROAD WARREN, MI 48089 (586) 776-3989 (586) 776-4844 (Fax) tkohomemaintenance@sbcglobal.net October 21, 2014 Angie’s List, Business Center I am responding to the complaint from [member name removed]. I met with [member name removed] in June, 2014 to discuss repair work for his home in [member info removed]. [member name removed] accepted my proposal. A deposit was not given, as there were various projects interior and exterior and the order of work was not finalized at this time. In July, I sent one of my workers to his home to start some interior repairs, and [member name removed] sent him away. I explained to [member name removed] that we were backed up due to the amount of rain, and the very serious illness to my brother, also my partner that oversees the roofing department. As previously stated, [member name removed] could have allowed TKO to start some interior work instead of sending my worker away. The scheduling conflict was not only an issue with TKO but also [member name removed]. There were other times, I tried to schedule work, and was told it was not convenient to [member name removed] due to his vacation schedule. TKO did have a great deal of work following the flooding the beginning of August. It was not that the major storm (devastating storm that is) brought us a great deal of work, but rather we had just finished working on several homes/basements in the area that were greatly hit, and had spent a great deal of money on repairs. TKO was compelled to give them immediate attention, as it was the right thing to do. After receiving a voice mail on Sunday October 18th from [member name removed], giving me an ultimatum that he would be placing negative feedback about my company after I had explained and apologized for what was going on, and was very sorry for the delay in starting his job, I was very concerned. I called, and left a message immediately. By no means was my response, rude or belligerent. My message was apologetic that my company was not able to get his work completed in a timely manner. I also stated that TKO was interesting in completing his work at this time. Taking all of these events into consideration, TKO is no longer interested in working with [member name removed]. I again am sorry for this unfortunate situation. Sincerely, Joe Murray, TKO HOME MAINTENANCE

Very happy with the job performed. We were under a bit of a time crunch for a VA refi and they fit us into their schedule to make that happen. Because it is a VA job, control of lead based paint chips removed during prep is critical. They did a fantastic job of cleaning up after the job was done, even to the point of raking the flower beds. The on-site crew were very personable and friendly. The only reason I gave them a B on responsiveness and punctuality was the fact that I was a little stressed when they didn't show up one day and had trouble getting in touch with the owner. Turns out it was pouring in Warren so they had a rain day even though it was nice at my house, and the owner was up north in an area with spotty cell service. All in all we were very happy with the service, I was just hyper critical because of the time crunch we were under. I would definitely use them again.

This company is fantastic!! the best contractor I have ever worked with. Any future work needed on my house will definitely be done by this company. If you had a 5 star rating this company would definitely deserve it. They are very professional, polite, and a pleasure to work with. Out the same day I called for a quote, did the job on the spot,, stayed late to complete the job. They cleaned up when finished. Called the next day to make sure I was satisfied, and when I told them I did not feel the trim paint ( that I had supplied myself) matched the house color, they came out the next the and worked with me to get a better match, they stayed until I was completely satisfied. UNBELIEVIABLE!!!!!

It did not go well. I made an appointment to have him come out for a quote on both the driveway and fencing, since I knew they did both. I'm trying to do a minimum of 4 quotes on any job - especially ones that roll into thousands of dollars. I'd already spoken to two other companies by the time our appointment came around and was amazed that how professional and organized these companies were in giving my detailed quotes (see my reviews for our driveway and fencing in October/November 2012). The differences between our experience with TKO had been much less formal but we liked the job they did several years ago. On the day we were to meet, sometime around 10:30 am, he never showed up. I figured he was being held up. I was a bit annoyed that he didn't call me - with our past history, I cut him some slack. An hour goes by. I do some stuff around the house - just waiting to see how long it would take to call me. Then 2 hours. Around 1 pm I finally decide enough is enough. I call him and he answers immediately. I ask why he hadn't been here and said he didn't know he had an appointment with me. He casually says he has two calendars, one in the truck, he must have written it down in that one. I suddenly remembered that one of the and quot;quirksand quot; I mentioned earlier was this calendar situation - I'd heard it from him before during our last job. Now here I'd waited almost 3 hours for him to show up to give me a quote on this new job (approx $4-5k) and I ask him when I can expect him - assuming that he would come right over. INSTEAD, he said he was and quot;consideringand quot; going to the Tigers game that afternoon and that he might swing by around 6 or so if we were going to be home. I was NOT happy - up to that second I had every intention of still having him come out - we were that pleased with the previous work. This project was being handled clean and methodically - no room for bs. It struck me that he should be and quot;consideringand quot; high-tailing it here to get his quote in after missing the appointment - maybe miss part of the game opening. That was that. I told him to enjoy his baseball game and he would not need to come by since the game was more important than his customers and a potential late-season job. Our last job was a late season one and he had mentioned how hard it was to find jobs around the time the job would be done. I knew the 2 companies I'd already met with were more than eager to get the job. I told him were done and that was that. It's been months and I'm still cranky about it. So here is a breakdown of my rating - because of our previous relationship I've rated the price and quality based upon our patio work. The other items are based on the most recent interaction. They do great work, but getting it done is a bit of a hassle.
Description of Work: Nothing. They had done concrete work for us in the past - poured a patio slab. They were quirky but they got the job done and we were pleased. The owner is a really nice guy, but not the most organized. However, when we decided to put in/extend our driveway and have new fencing installed in late fall 2012, they were at the top of the list to have come for a quote.

We hired TKO to repair the masonry on the chimney which was deteriorating. They gave us an estimate for $1200 to rebuild 3 courses of the chimney, do tuckpointing as needed and install new concrete crowns on both chimneys. They performed the work on a timely basis and were friendly and polite. The work seemed fine at the time but about 7 yrs later we found that the chimney was crumbling again! We called them back to let them know and they didn't return our calls. When we were approached by one of their salespeople trying to drum up new work, we pointed out the problem with the chimney. They said they would get back to us but never did. Good tuckpointing should last at least 20 years so I'm sure they were using cheap materials. The fact that they never came by to talk to us about the chimney does not speak well for them - they obviously don't stand by their work. We would never hire them again. .

Upon reviewing this post we have looked into this complaint and have since followed up with the customer. However we were unaware that an issue had come up until this complaint was posted by them. No inferior materials were used on this job. Any bricks layed or tuckpointing work done, was done with high strength mason mix. A re-build would have been warrantied for 5 years. This job was a partial rebuild with some tuckpointing in areas where needed. Although the job was completed in 2004 (8.5 years ago) the owner is still willing to look at the job and attempt to work with the customer to resolve this complaint.

They were giving an estimate to our neighbor across the street and I asked them for a quick estimate on redoing our chimneytop. Stu came over and took a look and gave me a very attractive estimate of $600 to take off the the top 6 rows and bebuild it properly. He refused to consider a surface tuckpointing which as he properly stated was not addressing the real issue of water infiltration. I was impressed by his candid approach and advice to do it correctly. I checked his company TKO on Angie's List and was reassured by positive reviews. I called him back the next day and he did the work as promised
Description of Work: Chimney top rebuild. They took down the top six courses of bricks and rebricked with new mortar, replaced and mortared the masonry water shield, and put on a new chimney cap with rodent guard. They did a great job of matching the new work with the existing brickwork. Very professional job all round.

I was pretty happy with them, although I'm still waiting for them to come back and look at the chimney. It seems that there were some spots that were missed. I took a close look at the chimney after they left, and there were some pieces of masonry that were left unfilled. I think they had a disgruntled workman who wasn't happy with being there, and he messed up the job. I think the guy who runs the company is serious about being a communicator and providing good service. However, this time, the communication didn't happen.

They never followed through to come back out and look at their shotty work. I was only able to get them back out when I told them I was interested in getting estimates on other paint work. They did power wash, scrape, and paint our carport, but they missed quite a few spots and after they were finished you could run your finger over the paint and chip it off in some spots. They told me they used Sherman Williams 25 year warranty paint. The owner of the company did come back when I mentioned that I needed more work and showed him what his company did and asked for some paint to touch up some of the spots that were left over. I still have never heard back from them. We aren't even sure that they used the paint that they charged us for.
Description of Work: They power washed, scraped, and painted the exterior of a carport in our co-op community.

Response from TKO Home Maintenance
It is now August 2013 and we are still honoring our warranty. We just completed a touch up at no charge and we most definitely do use Sherwin Williams products. So in response to the above review we have followed through with our contract.

The TKO salesperson came to my door after noticing the condition of my chimney. We agreed to have that repaired, and due to the excellent job that was done, I also had all of the bricks replaced on my front porch and tuck pointing on my back porch.
Description of Work: TKO rebuilt my chimney, front porch, and tuck pointed the back porch. Work was done promptly and professionally at a reasonable price. All interactions with the company were positive.

They were terrible. I used them a month before I got on Angie's List. They failed to follow up and do what they said that they were going to do. They have not called me back and they have not checked anything. The person came out a couple of times and said that he was going to do something but did not do it. I am no longer talking to them. When it did not work, I asked them to come back and caulk again. They came back and did it but it still did not work. He was going to do it himself but he never did. I got him out twice but he never called back. I just had it with them. Their price was good which was where I got stupid. I worried about their price when I should have worried more about how good they were. I had no way to know that until I got on Angie's List which was the reason that I got on Angie's List. They were in the neighborhood working on something and I saw them. I saw that they were done with their work and it was just a matter of them coming over after I talked to them. I don't even want to talk to them anymore.
Description of Work: I used the services of TKO Home Maintenance. They caulked around our house as I had a water problem in my basement.

$1,000

Response from TKO Home Maintenance
In response to the recent report made by the member we would like to comment that the charge was closer to $500.00 not $1,000.00. We let the member know prior to signing with our company that we could not guarantee that caulking would remedy his issue of water leaking in his basement. When he called to let us know that water was still leaking into his basement the owner personally went out and met with him to look the job over. We then sent out one of our employee's free of charge to re-caulk between concrete patio, driveway and brick wall. Unfortunately the member needs basement waterproofing which is several thousand dollars opposed to a couple hundred dollars we charged him to seal the crack. Of coarse waterproofing would have better results than sealing the crack but it was an option that he chose to try.
