McCarver Mechanical Heating and Cooling lied to us about the fan motor lasting another 1-2 years. They tried to lie and say DTE was cutting back our electricity. Our upper floor is still too warm.
Description of Work: It took these "professionals" no less than FOUR visits in what could have easily been fixed in one. On top of that, they lied to us. Twice. I will preface this by saying that, before we called this company we had absolutely no problem with the air cooling in the house, the air flow, or getting the thermostat down to 62 on the hottest summer day. Visit #1- We needed a new capacitor on the outdoor unit. This is a $10 part, tops. They charged $82 for a service call and $125 for the part. On this visit, Joe told my boyfriend that the fan motor on the outdoor unit "only had another 1-2 years left in it". He made sure that it would last another year or two, Joe said yes, so he said we would look into replacing it next summer since it should be OK for now. At this visit, Joe took out the filter from the unit in the basement, left it on the floor, said nothing about it. Later we realized the filter was not in the furnace where it was supposed to be. What tech leaves a furnace filter sitting out of the unit? After this visit, we had almost no air flow and the temp. in the house would not go below 76. Visit #2- Told them about no air flow and how hot house was, not cooling down. Then they sent out a different tech., Sul. He spent 2 hours troubleshooting why the temp. was not going down and why we had no air flow out of most of the units. He could not figure it out. But he did figure out how to go into our basement, mess with all of the bellows down there, turn way up the a/c flow in the basement, and turn almost completely off the a/c on the top floor. He told me, because he could not solve the issue, that DTE was definitely scaling back our electricity since it was summer and it is hot outside! I told him he could stop right there, I've worked in Real Estate for years, and DTE was definitely NOT cutting back on our electricity. He tried to argue this ridiculous point, that was most likely geared toward any female who was home alone dealing with this company, because he thought I was going to believe this baloney. Then he said that it had to be the fan motor on the outdoor unit. The one Joe had told us just the day prior would last another 1-2 years! I went outside and could see that it was spinning slower and more off-center than it should have been, but guess what? It was absolutely not doing this before they came out to work on it. Sul called me the next day with a price for the fan, it was to be $325 installed. I said ok. The house would only at this point cool down to 76. Visit #3- Joe is back again, 2 days later. First words out of his mouth "Did they tell you on the phone that it was going to be a little more than $325?" Of course not, where else would I have gotten that price from? He said it would be "a little more", but could not explain why or the discrepancy. He put in the new fan, charged another $82 for a service call, and $350 for the part! Total was $432. Way over what I was quoted on the phone. After this I went outside to check the unit and I see that Joe did the most unprofessional, lazy job as is humanly possible. There are zip ties and 2 wires sticking out of the grille, where any child or animal walking by can pull them out and break the unit. I contacted them via email to fix this mess. Their response? We are booked solid suddenly for the next 2 weeks. I said, if it was damaged further by anyone pulling on the exposed zip ties or wires, that they would be 100% responsible for it. Visit #4- They were able to come back out quickly to fix their crappy zip ties sticking out of the unit job. This time with bonus extra attitude. I told them to fix it and that I would not be paying for another visit. The fix? They pulled out those zip ties and put new zip ties in! These zip ties were a different color. So now we have an air conditioning unit with a new capacitor, a new fan motor, for a total of $639 that has zip ties and wires still sticking out of the top of the grille, extra a/c in the basement where we don't need it, almost no a/c air flow on the top floor, main floor will not go below 68 degrees. On this 4th visit, Sul left a note on the receipt stating "The only option to have wires be out of sight is to install the original motor, which is considerably more expensive than a universal part ($366)." Except we DID pay them $432 total for a new fan motor. When I contacted them via email on this, they explained that they had installed a Universal motor, not an OEM condensing fan motor specific to our unit. The point is, they never gave us a choice. They just installed whatever they wanted to and made up excuses for their zip ties and wires sticking out of the grille.
