+ -1 moreOnly company we could find who agreed to check and repair gas fireplace. The visit included checking the roof around the chimney and status of the chimney flue. Because we live in a condo and fireplace was recently checked during home inspection, it was frustrated that we could find no one to just fix the broken part The company sent two men. Both were very polite and professional, explained the problem and had a replacement part so could fix it right then.
Description of Work: Replaced thermopile in gas fireplace. Put fresh embers down.

+ -1 moreWe are fully cognizant of the apparent very good reputation of Doctor Flue, inc. That is why we are so astounded by our lack of a good result with the company. We do not feel that we have even received common courtesy. We plan to go ahead to try and make our fireplace usable. The best we can hope for as to Doctor Flue is that there was a communication breakdown. Date: 6-23-2013 Regarding the Doctor Flue response, we believe that the "F" rating was well darned. There were two lengthy phone conversations following our rating. Doctor Flue made it patently clear that the purpose of the calls was not to "inform and educate," but to get us to change our "F" rating. Although Doctor Flue admitted that they "found" our letter dated April 4, 2013 in which we requested a quote on a fireplace insert, to this day that request has been ignored. Doctor Flue did not have the required information to even know what our condo association required for a fireplace replacement. On May 7, 2013 I emailed Doctor Flue and pointed them to the condo assoc. web site where the entire fireplace installation requirements are delineated. We have yet to receive any help from Doctor Flue regarding our fireplace situation other than a self-serving apology. Doctor Flue has done nothing to change our minds about our experience with their company.
Description of Work: Doctor Flue was hired by our Condo Association to perform fireplace/chimney inspections on all units. our unit was inspected in April 2011. The crew did arrive on time but that was not a problem because we were sure they were busy while handling the entire condo. A video inspection of the fireplace was performed and were informed that there was bent flange in the lining, making the fireplace unusable. Also, that our gas line had been improperly installed for 40 years. The damaged flange was not shown to us live, but in a photo captured on a phone. I found the inspection results to be a bit incredulous, so I, in writing 10/19/2011, asked for a reinspection at my own costs to see if they could duplicate the same findings. My request was ignored. I made several phone calls in an attempt to get an inspection. On October 26, 2011 received a call from Doctor Flue offering an inspection, with one-day notice, for October 27, 2011 between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Kevin from Doctor Flue with another young man and did not do an inspection. His question to me was "What do you want?" I said that I wanted to try and put my fireplace in a usable position. Kevin informed me that he thought the flange could be repaired and would cost around $1300. He said there would be no charge for his appearance and would personally send to me a bid/estimate "next week." I received the "proposal" on November 7, 2011. I will paraphrase two clauses that prevented me from accepting the same: IF A CODE COMPLIANT INSTALLATION CANNOT BE MET WITH CURRENT PARTS, DOCTOR FLUE, INC WILL ASK ... FOR SECTIONS OF CHIMNEY TO COMPLETE THE INSTALLATION. IF APPROPRIATE PARTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE AT THE TIME OF SERVICE, DOCTOR FLUE INC WILL COLLECT FOR COMPLETED WORK AND OFFER OPTIONS (IN WRITING) FOR A POSSIBLE SOLUTION. We were not willing to invest in such an "ffy" proposal. Subsequent, I was furnished a brochure by our condo Management, which ostensibly came from Doctor Flue, that appeared to be exactly what we had been seeking. It depicted a Direct Vent Natural Gas installation. I wrote a letter dated April 4, 2013 to Doctor Flue wherein I sought a proposal involving costs an assurance that the insert would meet all codes and the Condo Assoc. approval.

It is not a bad idea to get a second opinion because I know that they suggested something which I thought was not really needed but I am sure they would have done a good job if they had done it. I felt their prices were on the high end but I got what I paid for. I would highly recommend them.

+ -1 moreWe were very disappointed with them because all they wanted to do is just sell us thousands of dollars worth of their products that we weren't even interested in. When they came with their cameras the young gentleman didn't take the credit card number on the back and he didn't get the expiration date. We handed them the card, they took only what they needed, and then they left. We started to get these phone calls on a cell phone saying that they didn't get the right number. I told them that we don't do that over the phone and told them to send me their invoice, which they did immediately. We then sent a check immediately to them for $128. They said it was going to delay the pictures of the inside of the chimney flue. We never received any pictures or a report because we're not buying the extra stuff. I wasn't home at the time, but my husband and son were. They told me that the guys came in and left these pamphlets for a $5,000 insert for our second floor fireplace which we didn't want. We told then what we needed in the basement and they said that since we were having problems that they are going to have to reline the whole flue. It was just bizarre, so we had someone else come to take a look at it and they told us that they don't know what they were thinking. I'm not spending $12,000 or more for someone to look at my chimney. We built our home 17 years ago and we've now finished the walkout basement at the lower level. We live on a lake and we just put a small wood-burner there. We needed it hooked up and certified. We had a different flow coming in and out from the chimneys. We went to a fireplace store and they told us that it happens often, so if you call someone they'll make sure that it is capped off. It wasn't even an issue and they didn't want to look at it. We had to wait almost three weeks for someone to come and look because they were so busy. We also never received a receipt in the mail or actually what we paid for and my check cleared. I thought their price was very expensive, but they were punctual and there that day. I don't think that he was very professional because he didn't take down all the information that he needed when he was here.

Dr. Flue showed up on time, professionally dressed and did the job very much to my satisfaction. I have worked with Kevon in the past and I assure you that he is a true professional, very knowledgeable and really cares about pleasing the customer. Dr. Flue is the "gold standard" of all contractors.
Description of Work: I had a problem with wind-driven rain entering one of my chimney caps and leaking into the firebox. Dr. Flue installed a wind guard over the existing chimney cap.

+ 1 moreOn our first communication Kevon asked me to send him some pictures and a sketch with dimensions of the firebox. He did some research and found several catalog units that were possibilities. He came to our house one evening (after my work hours) and presented my wife and I some of his designs. We looked at pictures of some of his previous installations (which helped alleviate some of the worries). Finally, we chose one. Dr Flue set up a date and arrangements were made to do the work (One Day) within a couple weeks from the quote. On the day of service Kevon and his assistant showed up in their fancy truck with all they needed to do the work. They laid out tarps and protective covers in the living room and wore protective covers over their work boots when they had to walk in the house. The work was not easy and took several hours of busting up stone and brick. Some of the granite field stone needed to be shaved. Much dust was generated, but it was collected with vacuum systems they had running almost the entire time they were working. A gas line was installed in the basement and needed to be drilled through concrete. The insert finally was ready to fit, and it was a tight fit. Kevon had to shave some granite and rock, but it went in. It was not a small job and they stayed with it all day ( I was glad I did not attempt it myself). Later that afternoon the fire was lit and they trained us on the use of the 'remote' and answered our questions. I have had a lot of work done to our home, but I can't remember seeing a tougher job come together any better. If you are looking for professional people doing creative work quickly, efficiently, and completely, you need look no further... Also; the final product is beautiful, balanced for the room decor and warming.
Description of Work: Dr Flue installed a new gas fireplace insert into our existing fireplace which was unusable because of local code. We had a fieldstone and brick wall that needed to be partially removed and altered for the new insert. New gas line had to be installed to accommodate the insert. Removal of brick and stone was required to accommodate chimney flue and exterior vent cap.

The reason for the C in responsiveness is additional deterioration was found during the initial inspection (flue liner grout severely deteriorated), asked for quote to install a stainless liner and never received the quote even after requesting a 2nd time.

+ -1 moreWe originally called someone else via Angie's List but they did not work with the type of fireplace insert that we had, so they put us in touch with Dr. Flue. Throughout both visits, Nick and Mike were exemplary in their professionalism and the care they took to ensure I understood both the problem and its solution. They worked fast and efficiently and took great care to keep dirt to a minimum inside the house. The quality of work was excellent. On their initial visit, Nick and Mike assessed the problem and put in place a temporary fix so that we could open and close the damper while awaiting a more permanent fix. They also detailed exactly what needed to be done, the parts that needed to be ordered and a very clear estimate of how much it would cost. At my approval, they also called the office on the spot and scheduled a follow-up time when they could return to make the necessary repairs with the ordered parts. This initial visit was around $100-150. On the follow-up appointment, they called ahead of time to let me know they could be there early (over an hour early) and to ask if that would be okay. I agreed so Nick and Mike came over and got stuck in removing the old damper and modifying the chimney to use a new damper. The solution was excellent because it meant all the work could be done without having to remove any walls or perform major construction. After about an hour, they were finished and Mike offered me a demonstration of how to use the new damper control, which he had fitted in the fireplace only after asking if I had a preference for its location.
Description of Work: The chain to our flue damper snapped in our 1975 fireplace insert and fixing it was looking like a job that would involve removing drywall in order to fix or replace the chain. Across two visits, Nick and Mike from Dr. Flue: - Performed a full inspection of the chimney using video - Temporarily fixed the problem - Arranged a follow-up appointment on the spot by calling the office on my behalf - Installed a new chimney cap and damper - Removed the old damper - Installed a new damper chain and bracket to lock it in position - Demonstrated the setup No drywall was damaged.
