+ -1 moreHe asked me if I wanted him to do it and I said no because I had another guy coming out in the afternoon to give me another quote. He then told me it would be $149 for him to come out to my home just for the estimate. I didn't pay anything because he didn't even do anything. I wouldn't have ever agreed to that because I had an ad from a different company that was much less. Kyla from the office ended up sending me an invoice for the balance remaining for the service evaluation. The technician just looked at my chimney and said it was really dirty. That's it.
Description of Work: The technician came out of to my home for an estimate. He quoted me $309.25 to sweep the chimney.

+ 2 moreOn every occasion that I have used this company, they have been utterly professional, courteous, and prompt. They provide pictures of the chimney interior or exterior where repairs might be needed, clearly explain the options, and then do the work with a minimum of fuss, always leaving things in good order.
Description of Work: On this visit, Doctor Flue just did one sweep. I have used them in the past to install a fireplace insert and also to repair our chimneys, installing new caps and also applying a product that helps keep the brick from cracking and flaking. We have been more than pleased with the fireplace insert that they installed in one of our fireplaces a few years ago. Hard for me to evaluate the work they did on the chimney caps but so far no further problems, and they solved the problem of the bricks flaking.

+ 1 moreI hesitated to write this review because I rarely provide negative feedback. However, in this case, I've decided it is warranted. This was the third time that we've used Dr. Flue for chimney cleaning. We have always been pleased with the service until this last time. Dr. Flue's employees performed an inspection of the chimney and flue using a video camera. They reported that the flue needed extensive work and that it was unsafe to use. We were quite surprised given that this was the first time we've received a negative report and it was also very alarming. They suggested extensive improvements (or installation of a gas fireplace) that would have cost several thousands of dollars. Dr. Flue also wanted to do the work and provided an estimate between $2500 to $5000. Given that we maintain our 70-year old home in excellent condition and have had two major remodeling projects, we followed up with Dr. Flue for additional information and to seek clarification. We also sought three other opinions - from two reputable competitors and the city inspector. All three reviewed Dr. Flue's video pictures and two of the three also performed an on-site inspection. All indicated that the chimney and flue were perfectly safe for use and that the recommended work was unnecessary. I contacted Dr. Flue's owner seeking clarification and asked that he personally come to our home to inspect the chimney so that he could double-check his employees' work. I was not confrontational or accusatory in any way. He declined. To the owner's credit, he spent a significant amount of time on the phone with me and said that he reviewed the video pictures. But, I still cannot reconcile why we received such a "doom and gloom" inspection from Dr. Flue and completely opposite opinions from two other competent companies that could have given the same opinion just to do the work. Given the conflicting information and insecurity, we are not building blazing fires in the fireplace nor do we use it everyday which is too bad. Moral of the story: it might be wise to get a second opinion if extensive work is being recommended by Dr. Flue.

We live in a 2.5 story house with 12/12 pitched roof so this was not an easy access project. There was an issue with a shingle coming loose from the ridge vent area where the work was completed. I did not notice this until several months later but they came out and replaced it free of charge within a week. We were pleasantly surprised. We would highly recommend them to anyone with chimney/roof issues.

+ 1 moreJust received 2 phone calls from Office Manager and I thought she was calling in relation to my comments above regarding her curtness on the phone to me when I called regarding the time limit of response from their office for the proposal of all the services to be completed. After 2 weeks (which they said it would take to receive all the parts once ordered and I did not have a phone call, I called their office after finding a proposal sent via e-mail with a 5 day term for response and this was 10 days later. She never apologized for the mix-up and led me to believe that it was my fault that nothing was followed thru on. There were no instructions on the e-mail for how to process and I had never received a proposal over e-mail without a heads up phone call or lack of directions for filling out. When she called this week reading my review, I thought she was calling to apologize for her curtness. Again she did not accept any responsibility for the breakdown of communication, but addressed the grade level I gave which somehow did not record correctly as I knew I had given them an A because the servicing of my FP issues by the service guys was top drawer and that is A number 1 issue when searching for quality work. The A is for the guys who came to repair the FP, They were top drawer in knowledge, inspection and servicing. You definitely want these guys to be the ones who do your work. As for the Office Manager, people reviewing previous customers opinion on how their services were handled, need to be aware of how she handled the communication process for the proposal as I am sure I am not the only customer that has been treated as if I did something wrong. She needs to correct herself, a little apology goes a long way and prevents bad feelings with her customers. I gave her Grace by saying I was not sure who called me and she assured me it would have been her that responded to my phone call. Sincerely, JanetRB
Description of Work: First visit to determine malfunction as fireplace pilot would not light. They determined it was the thermo-pile and inspected fireplace, charged 239.50 and left for next apt. Very clean, and took pictures before and after. |Tried using later on that night and pilot would not come back on. So, I recalled them and the decided to send their 20 yr veteran out for next visit. He determined Valve for Heatilator and Pilot assembly for a heatilator were immediately in need of replacement. |they also found that previous service had placed logs incorrectly against the glass screen which shattered the glass and the burner for heatnglow supreme had a soft crack. |I told them to replace it all as I did not want a malfunction to take place again. Mike did not have an estimate sheet with prices so he would have to call back. To speedup the 2 week process, I told Mike not to call which caused confusion as they had to have a signed proposal and they sent it via e-mail without calling me and letting me know it was there to sign for them. |I use my e-mail maybe twice a month and waited over 2 weeks for a response from the office. Needless to say, when I went out to review e-mails I found a proposal that had been sent and waiting for signature. |I called the office and made them aware of situation which I believe they were upset over as the girl was quite curt with me from then on. | |I told her I did not know how to process a proposal over the e-mail and was upset as it had now been over 8 weeks getting this fireplace in working order and it was just a week from valentines day and spring was around the corner, plus we were freezing without the help of the FP. | |Everything worked out beautifully, and they did a beautiful job taking pictures before and after again. | |In closing, nothing was mentioned about payment process and I had to use a charge card for an additional 3% charge and pull from my non-maintenance account which was disappointing. | |The guys, Caz, Mike and Kevin were beautiful to work with and knowledgeable knowing what to look for and very thorough in their inspection process. | |Am definately recommending them and will work with them in the future! + -1 moreThey are wonderful people. You get what you pay for. They are not cheap. They just do a wonderful job. It is like insurance against fire hazard. Our experience has been wonderful enough that we have them every year. Their people are very knowledgeable no matter who you talk to and whoever happens to be on the job that day. You ask them a question and they have the answer right there. They do not have to look it up. The cost was $180 per chimney. The total cost was $360 for two chimneys. On the other hand, we burn way less fuel because the chimney was clean and we got much more heat out of the wood because everything burned better. I know it is expenditure, but what I am saving on my LP gas by burning my own wood, it is well worth it. We are retired and the price would be nice if it was less, but I think if it was less, they would not be cleaning the glass in my wood stove and they would not be as careful. The price matches the effort they put forth. We would not even ever look around for someone else.
Description of Work: Doctor Flue cleans our flue. That is a very seasonal job they do for us. They wait till you are finished heating with wood and they come out and clean your flue. They completely cleaned my wood burner. They polished the glass. They did everything. They did not leave a speck of dust behind. They also did the wood furnace and cleaning the chimneys and everything. The last time they came out, they cleaned two chimneys. They run a brush up and down the chimney flue and cleaned it out at the bottom. They cleaned the screen over the top of the chimney so that ashes could not get out and set your roof on fire. They cleaned and ashed the wood furnace and they cleaned my wood stove in the sun-room. They took pipes off the stove, cleaned out the pipes, and reassembled them. They also replaced a piece of pipe for the furnace that deteriorated over a period of time. They replaced it with a much superior quality pipe. They did ash everything. They take a vacuum sweeper into your wood stove and get up underneath where you cannot reach yourself without getting filthy.

+ -1 moreThey had to come back out and fix one thing they did because they did not properly seal the flashing on the chimney and water started leaking into the house. I was not very pleased with them about the situation. They told me I had to be home from work for them to do it so someone had to be at the house. I came home from work and by the time I got there they had already been there and left, but did not leave any notice that they had been there. I sat there waiting for 30 minutes for the appointment and finally called them to find out that they had already been there. They did not charge me for the second service because it was a mistake from the first service.
Description of Work: On their first trip they were supposed to reseal the flashing on the chimney.

+ 1 moreWe were disappointed that Doctor Flue was scheduling so far out for chimney inspections/cleaning but it was well worth the wait. Every encounter with the company was professional and respectful. The reminder email included a photo of our chimney sweep, which was a nice touch that we really appreciated. Jacob and Jason were expected to arrive at 11:15 and called to let us know they would be 10 minutes late and verified that was acceptable. Upon arrival, they inspected two wood stove chimneys and one fuel oil furnace chimney. They cleaned one wood stove chimney and will send us a proposal to install a new lining in the spring. The other wood stove is in an ancillary living space and not currently used. It requires cleaning, but we chose to defer that until we have them back to safely install a new wood stove for that space (current is in poor condition and installation not up to code). The fuel oil furnace chimney inspection revealed quite a mess. The chimney lining is essentially rotten and caving in, it turns out. Cleaning the debris was exceptionally challenging given how the venting was installed, and it took a long time for Jacob to remove, clean, and replace the vent. Seeing the significant hazard present, we greatly appreciate that he took the time to do this right, even though it likely delayed his other appointments (apologies to whoever was behind us). They took great care to prevent a mess and the wood stove areas were cleaner than they found them. Overall, we were exceptionally impressed with the service! Many thanks to Jacob and Jason!

+ 1 moreMike and Dustin arrived on time and were very friendly, professional and efficient. They wore shoe covers and protected my new carpeting with a drop cloth. When I purchased this condo in the fall, the home inspector suggested I have the fireplace inspected and I thought that was a great idea, especially because I would not have turned it on anyway in fear of a gas leak or some other malfunction, not knowing what condition it was in. Mike took pictures of everything, showing me the make, model and serial numbers in case I need to contact the manufacturer in the future. He also sent me a link to the User Manual online and gave me step-by-step instructions for lighting the pilot light in case it goes out in the future. Mike was able to tell immediately that there had never been a wood burning fire in the fireplace, as the chimney was clean. They went up on the roof to inspect things and found that the chase cover needs work. I emailed the picture they took of the chase cover along with Mike's comments to my condo association, making them aware that it needs servicing. Mike emailed me all the pictures he took and I will definitely keep them in my gas log fireplace file. End of story ... I was very pleased and would use Doctor Flue's services again in a heartbeat, and I will recommend them to others. As finances allow, I may upgrade to one of the newer, state-of-the-art systems that Mike described!
