Our motto is "Your Remodeler for Life", as we strive to develop a 20+ year relationship with our clients. We treat our clients' homes as we would our own.
Dave Kopke founded the business in 1993 after noticing undesirable trends in the industry. He wanted to do home improvement the right way, always keeping customer satisfaction his #1 priority. After word got around, our growth has remained consistent, with about 40% of business each year coming from past customers. In 2013, we moved to a much larger facility to accommodate our increasing needs while expanding our radius of travel.
Much of our staff are lifelong employees, and many of our clients no longer feel the need to "get 3 bids". We are seldom the lowest bid, but as we like to say, we are "where quality and affordability come together".
Once you experience Kopke, you will never look at remodeling the same.
The house and rafters in the roof are approximately 70 years old, and since the span exceeded the capacity of the existing rafters a number of them had cracked or broken. Mr. Kopke provided an excellent review of the situation and some great tips. However he told me that at that time he was not doing that kind of work. He was punctual and helpful, and based on his assessment fairly knowledgeable. However I cannot recommend his work because I did not use him to do the repairs.

They were professional and did a very nice job on the entire house. The only complaint is the fact that they didn't keep me apprised of the proper pricing and there had been an argument about that. They waited until it was too late for me to change my selection in order to fit within my original budget. It's not that I necessarily would have gone back to that but I should have known earlier.

I provided the sales person a detailed written list of the items for the bathroom including a heated floor, tile wall with wainscoting, tube with shower, heated towel rack, cupboards, sink type, towel ring, grab rails and toilet (wall mount) with in wall plumbing. An estimate was given of 20-25 thousand dollars. I paid $500 for the design. It did not come back with the special toilet or heated towel racks, both which were big charge items (plumbing and electrical). When questioned regarding the written list he claimed I verbally indicated that I said he could change the toilet to a floor mount and the two towel racks could be added on. I knew that the special toilet and additional electrical work would be quite expensive to add on later and that I was not dealt with fairly. If I had gone with the plan the estimate would have been reduced by the $500 I paid for the design, but decided the approach was unfair.

It went fantastic. This is the first remodeling project we've hired someone to do after spending 20 years doing it ourselves. We've just run out of time to do that. That being said, we were hesitant that we would get quality work done to our expectations. Dealing with Kopke was great from beginning to end. Mike was very pleasant to deal with and offered options for us to chose from to get to a quote we were comfortable with. Dale was also very pleasant and professional. It was obvious that he took pride in his work. They cleaned up so well. The doors look and feel just perfect. Couldn't be better. Only recommendation I have is to ensure they do a walk-through when the project is completed. Maybe that's typical and wasn't done in this case because they were hoping to get finished by mid-day. A few days later, I found that a door knob upstairs had paint on it. Not a big deal, but they likely would have cleaned up if we would have noticed during the walk-through. We would definitely recommend them to a friend and will be sure to use them again for any projects in the future. Thanks!!

We were very quickly placed in a very high price bracket, based on the salesman's cocky attitude and "vast experience". He showed us pictures of average bath remodels and told us how much these customers had paid, which we felt. in each case, was way too much. After having other companies come out to quote, we realized we were correct with the feeling that Kopke was quoting way too high, and the other sales people were simply more knowledgeable and a lot less cocky and smug with their comments. I don't know if Kopke might have done a great job, but I do know we would have paid too much!

I'm shaking me head reading some of the negative reviews on this company. Pretty much because our experiences with them were completely opposite of those accounts. Background - 2 story north Warren brick home. 1962 build. When we made up our mind to get our kitchen done, we knew it was a huge job. A complete gut and re-do. I educated myself on quality levels of cabinetry, appliances, tile and flooring selections, made note of what plumbing and electrical changes we would need/want, conversion to gas cook top, demolition, granite, etc. Thus, we came up with a budget that was built on a realistic cost range for our project. We didn't go into it looking for a contractor to come in here and give us some pipe dream kitchen re-do for 10-12 grand, as we had seen advertised in the TV Guide or something. I suppose if I had called Kopke over for an estimate thinking that was what a reasonable remodel would cost, then I may be upset with the price point too. By reading some of the negative reviews especially about kitchens and baths, I wonder if that had something to do with it. Budget - So after all that, our budget was about 30K. Contractor Search - Kopke was the third company we sough to review our job. The first was OK on price and materials, but they tried to steer me away from permits and used all sub-contractors by their own admission. Those were red flags. Company two was like a used car salesman, really seedy and we caught him pulling several bait and switches on us. We had no confidence at all, going into this project we should have been excited about. I read about Kopke here, on Angie's list. Initial Meeting - From the initial meeting with Richard, the designer and estimator, we felt confident about going with the company. He was extremely knowledgable, creative, and flexible with what we wanted and could afford in our budget. When we told him what we wanted, he took a few minutes to consider price points for material quality levels then told us flatly, that Kopke could not do this job for under 18K, and that was based on minimal material quality and eliminations we would have to consider from our desires. Fair enough. But when we asked what was a more realistic estimate he gave us an estimate that was actually below what we expected and was within our budget. No, it was not your typical "free estimate" process, but I actually felt better about it. Yes, we did have to pay a procurement fee of five percent of the minimum (18K) estimate. But it was clearly explained as to why. Essentially, Richard is a design architect and part of the price in a new kitchen is someone actually laying it out and designing it. Despite some negative comments on this, It seems reasonable to me that we would pay for that, as opposed to getting this for free and then taking it to someone else. And it was a very thorough process. Several weeks later he returned with drawings, CAD schematics, measurements, and a very lengthy point by point price analysis, finely detailing every piece of work and it's cost. Several items on that list were bargained down and we felt good moving forward. In several follow up planning and dreaming sessions, Richard always came armed with tons of samples and portfolio pictures to help us get an idea of what he was seeing. From everything, to flooring, to drawer knobs, cabinets, tile, etc. He had it ready for us to look at and consider. He was always up front about the pricing of options as well. We chose several, and that increased the price to why we ended up over budget. The Project - Between the time we wrapped up the design and planning with Richard until the time the demolition began was much longer than I expected. This was partly because we had to wait for cabinetry to be measured, ordered, and delivered, as well as our appliances. Plus, Kopke's installers and craftsmen are not sub contracted. HUGE PLUS. At least for our job, all the guys here were employees of the company, with the exception of the electrician. Part of the delay was making sure that the guys needed for the job were lined up to readily complete it, once it started. This as opposed to hop scotching jobs back and forth which causes delays and gaps in each job that's going on. One thing I really liked, was that when our crew showed up. They were there practically every day, without lapses, until it was done. Once the job started we were the responsibility of the interior building manager, Kurt (maybe it was Kirk). He and his crew of installers and carpenters were great. We have no complaints about their timeliness, cleanliness, and workmanship. The job lasted a bit longer than originally estimated but certain things were out of their control. Overall, we are very happy with the new kitchen and would certainly start with Kopke when looking to do another project. We were supplied with an online calendar from Kurt that let us know exactly who would be there and what they were doing that day and the days to come. There were some days that no one was working. But that was typically because he scheduled two days for rough plumbing and electrical, which only took one. Or there was a hold up with a city inspector, before they could move on. Those are expected. There were never days on end when guys couldn't be there, because they were held up on another job. Kurt was always responsive and call back or even stop in if we had questions. Our job did last a bit longer than I would have hoped because of the above mentioned things, and a huge screw up on my part with the granite. Not Kopke's fault at all. Final Thoughts - I waited several months after the job to write this review to see if any post-projects issues arose. A few have. Both times they have been very quick to respond and make the repair. They were nothing serious. One was a mis-installed crown element that was re-done and some caulk gapping that was touched up. No issues with call back even though they have our money now. I feel from start to finish this is a very professional outfit. We felt confident with them at every turn. Even post project, as I mentioned above. I never had the feeling the wool was being over my eyes, or even attempted. By the look of the final job and the quality of it, I am decidedly happy with our experience and our new kitchen. Thank You, Kopke. We would return in a heartbeat. Jon Z.

l call Kopke to get an estimate on remolding my new home. I looked into them on Angies List and also went to there web site. At the very top of the web site in big green letters it reads "We Give FREE Estimates". I only mention this because the estimates are NOT free!! The salesman / designer was on time, he dressed professional, and he had all the pictures you could ever want to look at... The problem came when he asked for 10% down to start to give me an estimate. Well i was then told i had a big enough job that i could have a "discount" and i would only need 5% down to start to give me an estimate. Now, you may be wondering how this is possible, asking for a percentage of a job before you give a price... This is how it works, they come to give you an estimate by asking what your budget is. That becomes your estimate and the bases of your down payment. Thank god I called 2 other large builders to bid this job out. How in the world can a company claim FREE estimate's and then pull this scam?? Another red flag was I asked to see some of his work in person and he claims that not a single person would give him permission for me to view finished work or at least in progress work. Very shady!!
Description of Work: Provider never did what he was called to do, He never provided a FREE estimate. He asked for a down payment to get me an estimate...

The meeting with Mike went well but his quote was ridiculously high and he didn't justify the expense with an actual cost breakout like the other contractors did. Maybe he thought he could get away with a higher quote because he spoke to two women. He estimated anywhere from $65,000 to $80,000. For $80,000, we could buy a house. I honestly think he didn't want our business because the project wasn't as big as the pictures of the other additions they have done in affluent neighborhoods. I honestly wouldn't recommend calling them out for a quote unless you have money to throw away. I'm not saying they don't do work, I'm just saying I'm not willing to pay $15,000 to $30,000 more to this contractor than the other contractors who all came in within a couple thousand dollars of each other.

The salesman (Mike) was very nice to work with and the product arrived as promised. They arranged installation promptly and it was completed in 3 days. Dale, the installer, was very nice and kept the area where he was working neat and clean. We were unhappy with the doorwall because it was the wrong color wood, style and didn't have the spring loaded screen door that we wanted. This was due to a misunderstanding when Mike wrote the order. We have learned that, in the future, we will be more specific on what we want ordered. . When I called Mike, he promised to solve the problem somehow. Within a week he offered to replace the door with the one we had wanted and came to our house to show us pictures of the correct door and double check the color of the wood. The door is now on order and we are waiting for it to come in. When it arrives, they promised to install it at no extra cost to us. I couldn't be happier with the entire process from beginning to end. We appreciated the fact that Kopke wanted us to be satisfied and took care of the problem with no hassle. We will definitely call on Kopke for a quote on the additional home improvements we plan to do.

It was a complete nightmare. The designer/salesperson repeatedly failed to provide us with samples, even when appointments were made specifically to see them. No drawings or images were ever provided as originally promised, except for one rough drawing of 1 wall that had incorrect details. We were told not to worry, as this wasn?t for final reference. However, when the sub-contractors finally showed up to work, they had this exact drawing along with some images we ourselves had sourced online to be used as rough ideas of what we were trying to achieve during the design process. We basically had to walk each contractor through the design ourselves. We were also repeatedly mislead by the salesperson and ultimately made product decisions that we didn?t necessarily want. When work finally began, we had to repeatedly fight for work outlined in the contract. Simple promises like the protection of our wooden floors in the rooms adjacent to the bathroom were an everyday battle. Luckily we asked to see the floor tile minutes before it was going to be installed, as the wrong tile had been ordered. At that time we were under the impression it was only the dots in our hex tile that were incorrect, but we later learned that all of the tiles were incorrect. When we were told our bathroom was complete, we went in to find a cast iron tub that moved up and down, a medicine cabinet that was too low, a sink that was clogged and slowly leaked out the back drain pipe onto the floor, no caulk anywhere, an unlevel floor, and the majority of the black dots in our hex design set too low. We invested in a camera to see under the tub and found that none of the legs of the 450+ tub had been shimmed. The weight was being entirely supported by the rim, which is in exact opposition to Kohler?s instructions. With hesitation, we finally agreed to let Kopke remove parts of the sub-floor beneath the tub to shim it from the bottom rather than tear out the whole bathroom and start over. They repeatedly argued that the tub didn?t need to be level, which is also in direct opposition to Kohler. Kopke managed to get it shimmed and level, but left two huge scratches in the brand new tub. Fed up, we spent several hours buffing them out ourselves. Luckily Kohler has much thicker porcelain than most. We then proceeded onto the problem of the floor tiles and discovered from the distributor that in fact the white tiles were different than we had agreed upon in the contract The whole floor has to be torn out and redone. Which means the sink and toilet must come out, etc. Kopke worked with us, but there was attitude behind their helpfulness. Frustrated and fearful of further incompetence, we finally agreed after 7 weeks of construction on a fee and dismissed them altogether. We have found another contractor to finish the job, but it will take a couple more weeks to order the materials and for labor. We will have been without our main bathroom for almost 9 weeks when all is said and done. It has been a terrible experience
Description of Work: We hired Kopke to remodel the main bathroom in our home. It is small, approx. 7' x 4', and although we knew exactly what we wanted in terms of design and products, we felt it best to let a professional; manage the project because we wanted it done both correctly and quickly. Although Kopke says they give free estimates, we were told upon arrival that a large deposit (we talked them down to $400 from $700) would be required. We signed the final contract to proceed with ordering and installation on 11-7-2012. Work didn;t begin until 4-8-2013.

The worst part was that they thought it was not a big deal and were not happy when I said that was an issue.
Description of Work: Way over my budget. I made it very clear how much I could spend, and they more that doubled the quote. He also didn't change anything about the layout of the kitchen, just said this was all he could do. Which totally defeated the purpose of remodeling the kitchen.
