John McCarter Construction

We have had a HORRIBLE experience with this company and would NOT recommend them to anyone. Our project was quoted in the Summer of 2021 and is still not finished. All we needed was to have some exterior wood repaired and painted and new gutters installed. It is September 2022, and it is still not complete. A crew came out in early August 2022 to replace some wood trim and remove the gutters. And we are still waiting... I understand labor shortages and material delays, but our project was quoted over a year ago. The communication and sense of urgency from the company have been terrible. The project's cost has increased due to material price increases, but had this been completed when scoped initially, this would not have been the case. We bid three other contractors, and I wish I had chosen someone else (I believe this project would have been completed).

We have used John McCarter Construction previously for work on our house, so when we needed additional work to our exterior we came back to them because they do great work, they’re affordable, and they’re very respective of our time and scheduling. This project turned out just as we had planned and everything looks great!

John McCarter Construction installed three entry doors and one sliding glass patio door (2016) in a house that I recently purchased. Don't hire these guys unless you want every door installed incorrectly!!! Patio sliding glass door had 1/4" gap under the full door so every time it rained, water leaked into the basement damaging the drywall and rotting out the subfloor along with the joists. They did not put caulk down before installing the door. They put OSI foam, then flashing on top of the foam then installed the door on top of the flashing thinking the foam would expand and seal the bottom of the door. One entry door was hung on an angle and was touching on the bottom seal while the top had a 1/2 gap between the door and seal. The other two doors, the striker plates were install incorrectly and the doors were not against the door seals. So every time it rained, water was coming in these doors also and rotten out the subfloor and door frames. They install windows and did not remove a down spout gutter to caulk the flashing. So they left one window with a 3/4" gap along the whole side. If the gutter backed up, water would run down the outside of the down spout into the gap between the flashing and siding getting water into the house. It's like dumb and dumber construction.... Bruce Ellis is totally useless and full of excuses of why this was not their fault. A good company stands behind their work and fixes any issues they created.... not this company...

I asked McCarter to remove the window frame made of cement since they did the siding. I did not want to trust anyone else for this work since it can be messed up easily. McCarter people came at the mutually agreed time and removed the frame. Then the glass was replaced by Henderson Glass. McCarter people came back later and put the frame and all the metal cladding back up again. No supervision was required. As usual, they did an excellent job.

Outstanding! There are a few good pole barn builders in the market but, virtually none of them are interested in pole barn repairs, especially in the case of small jobs. John McCarter Construction, though, sent two knowledgeable and personal young men to do the job which made good business sense because I've already recommended them to others in the South Lyon area. Small jobs now = larger jobs later. Also, Amber is really great to work with.

Very happy with the work. They came out the day I decide to proceed with the project. The service worker Justin was great to work with. He came out knew what he needed to do, and answered all my questions. He was very polite and worked the entire time he was out a my home. I would definitely use them again for other projects.

It was great working with John McCarter construction. I got their number after talking to my neighbor. I called them and they got back to be immediately to give me a ball park price and detail explanation on how they will bill me. Of course until they come and see exactly what's needed to be done will they have the exact price but they gave me all detail just so I know the labor and part cost needed. And how they bill about the hours of service. But gave me an idea how long it would take. So I would be comfortable with the price. After I agreed they got back to me to schedule a date and within few days everything was done. What I really liked; They said they will call me within couple days to schedule. And they did exactly that. when they called we scheduled a day and they said they will call again the day before. Again they did exactly what they said. The day before work they called to remind me and give me a window. I don't need to be there but their guy will be there to do the work will call me on that day before he comes. Again the guy calls me and let's me know he is on his way, since this work is outside I don't need to be there. He comes does his work and I come home everything looks good. I get the bill couple days later. It was so simple and clean and precise. I can't believe they did everything like they said... Is so hard to find any contractor to do what they tell you. I have met few luckily and I have met many that was very frustrating and I'm sure many people who reads review knows exactly what I'm talking about. Bottom line price was very fair. They did exactly what they told me. No surprises, very up front about the possibility cost. And they delivered what they told me. There communication is just amazing. You can bet I will be using them for all future work that I needed and they offer.

When they ran into issues ( water damage rotten wood ) quickly responded and repaired all issues beyond the original scope of the project and at a reasonable price

We are absolutely delighted with the all new outside of our house and are still breaking into smiles when we look at it, knowing it is as well constructed as it is attractive. We found each of the John McCarter construction crews to be hardworking, meticulous, and keen on getting the job done right and to our satisfaction. It was a good experience to work with McCarter construction from start to finish.

Most recently I had the roof completely redone. Just as they had performed a few years earlier, the roofing job overall was completed to satisfaction. Every job has its hick-ups and there has to be collaboration to over come situations and keep the project going. McCarter construction works with you on 100% Transparency Policy, commits to the upmost professional service, listens carefully to customer feedback, provides common sense feedback, material for home owners to do additional research and does not pressure into decision making for a fast $BUCK$! Executes knowledgeable skill sets to get the job completed to manufactures requirements for product install and most importantly quality craftsmanship, quality customer service. Even though they may seem a little more expensive at first which company is not (?) than other construction companies / quotes provided, they will negotiate, but you have to remember if it is good customer service, quality craftsmanship, collaboration and full transparency for job being quoted I recommend John McCarter.

McCarter Construction did a beautiful job on our siding project. They exceeded our expectations. We have received so many compliments from friends and neighbors. The workmanship is top notice. All the workers from the siding guys to the painters were very friendly and conscientious. We would highly recommend this company.

It's been a pleasure working with the John McCarter team in the past - the office and service staff have been very professional, courteous and flexible with their support. Most recently, worked with Sean Mattson to have a gutter replaced & relocated for a deck we were planning to have built. He and his team were responsive with their support, which worked very well with the timing on the building of the deck. Whether a need for their services is large, medium or small - you will get the same high quality level of service and support with the John McCarter team!

McCarter just sided my home with Hardie Plank siding. From the gentleman who estimated the job, to the construction manager, installation crew and administrative staff, they were all 5 stars. I'm not easily pleased and headed customer service best practices for a Fortune 50 company in my corporate career. These guys hit a home run and I will refer them to any of my real estate clients and have already done so twice.

Sales team was fast and responsive. Work done appears to be a quality job, although difficult to tell from ground. In my opinion they were over extended with work although their reps continually denied it. For example, work took much longer than estimated, crews often showed up later and with fewer members than promised. Calls to job manager and home office sometimes not returned. On one occasion , although we were informed a crew would be working (albeit the day after Thanksgiving), no one showed and we were not notified. I am fully aware that a lot of factors outside of the contractors control affect the speed and timing of roofing jobs but I would have been more understanding if there had been more honest communication about what was going on.

We could not be happier with the job McCarter did. Their crews were friendly, professional, and the workmanship was superb. They regularly asked if we were satisfied or had any questions. We didn't realize how complex a job this was, and it went without a hitch. The finished results look great. I don't think we have ever worked with a more professional operation, from start to finish. They really made us feel that we were important as a customer, and they would ensure that we were satisfied. I wish all contractors treated their customers so well.

All expectations were exceeded on every front - their work being of superior craftsman and care. For starters, I care a great deal about the work done to my home. When I first contacted the company, I spoke with Bob. Despite all the questions, requests, and concerns - Bob always took the time to explain his answers, help inform me where I fell short in my understanding, and ensured I was 100% comfortable as each conversation came to a close. I can tell you with certainty, Bob does not use scare tactics or high pressure sales techniques like so many companies do. Second, they do not require minimums for a job - meaning, they don't charge a minimum of $1000 just to change a lightbulb if that is all that needs to be done. They use an estimation process - which in my case was accomplished by sending photos via email. Personally I found their cost per labor hour not only fair, but outstanding when you consider the quality of their staff and the work they do. For my job, Luke was assigned. From the moment he arrived he was very personable and treated me like a human being. As the job involved use of a 40 foot ladder, Luke carefully maneuvered it around my property and took extra care to position in properly. At no time did I feel he put himself or anyone at risk. He was notably was very safety conscious and took the appropriate amount of time to ensure the job was done right. This was of particular importance to me as I have seen too many times the result of careless actions by others. In summary, I finally feel like I found a company that I trust - especially for all the work I am unable to do myself - and that says a lot given my reputation for an extreme perfectionist. I would hire this company again in a heartbeat.
