I might use them in the future as I need to save up money for my kitchen renovation. I did not get any floor plans or designs, if I was suppose to I am not sure. The visit lasted about 45 minutes which was under the 2 hours (I think) advertised.
Description of Work: I met Fred and he was very professional and knowledgeable. He was delayed by 1 hour but called ahead to let me know. I purchased the $75 kitchen consult, but I honestly don't feel that it was a consult. We talked about ways to update my kitchen which I already had an idea of what I wanted, so we talked about estimated quotes on different projects, but felt strange that I had to pay for that for $75. I am very new to kitchen renovations so I am not sure if I am suppose to pay for estimates.

[Member name removed] presented me with a wish list for her kitchen. With a $12,000 budget she wanted cabinets, hardwood floors, remove soffits, some appliances, granite countertops, tile back splash, lighting and smaller things like removing a closet to make more space. I went through the list assigning typical costs to each bullet point and quickly passed the budget without considering labor. We talked about eliminating some walls or partitions that could make the kitchen really exciting. We discussed some potential cost for this and the need for permits. I showed her pictures of my work and discussed the costs. I did’t think her budget was realistic, so I presented other ideas that fit better with the resources. She said she would talk with her husband, as he was not present. I left feeling confident that she was satisfied with the meeting and had what she needed. I explained that is not possible to estimate on an undefined project, and that it takes considerable research to arrive at an accurate cost when it is defined. These meetings are a starting point or discussions to be continued. When I walk out the door, I don’t consider it a “finished product”. I welcome phone calls or an opportunity to return and do whatever it takes to make the project happen. I want the work!

The pre-paid coupon I purchased for the consultation was to include field measurements and initial scale layout. But the provider only didi some basic consultation. This was helpful but not good value for the service; most such consultations are done for free.
Description of Work: The provider provided some very basic consultation on a kitchen remodel, including providing references to local providers.

I surely must have misunderstood. We discussed the field measure, but since the intent was to resurface the cabinets and replace doors, a field measure would not be helpful or relevant. I walked away expecting the homeowner to weigh the difference between the resurface and replacing of the cabinets and get back to me with decisions based on our conversation. It was my understanding that if she wanted to consider new cabinets, then I would come back so we could discuss a more solid direction and do the measure. I typically don’t measure for projects such as bathrooms where everything new is staying in the same place as the old. This to me was a similar situation. I sincerely hope she considers me as I am all too happy to go measure the space and bump the project forward. In terms of estimating, I provide written estimates at no charge. But I can not write a quote or a contract without a fair amount of research about the house and specifics of the project. The planning phase of most projects involves meeting with tradesmen, the building departments and often hiring subcontractors to open walls, to obtain an accurate “scope of work” and therefore cost. These are the numbers that provide a clear picture as to what a project will cost.

I worked with Fred on possibly redoing my finished basement. Our basement is finished but they drywalled the duct work really low and there are parts of the ceiling that I hit my head on while walking (I'm 6'4"). He took the time to understand what we wanted to do and worked with me to understand what our real options were. He brought over an HVAC guy to discuss moving the duct work as an option. In the end, we decided it wasn't time to do the work as there was real uncertainty on what could be done until we knocked half the ceiling down. I did pay the $150 consultation fee, but it was worth it to get an honest answer and advice. He actually advised us not to do the remodel at that time. I'll pay for great advice rather than "free estimates" any time. I trust Fred and will definitely use him on other projects we have. Surpised at the negative reviews on his lack of responsiveness - wasn't my experience at all.

Date and time were set for service. After waiting 35 minutes after the appt. time, I called and left a message asking why he hadn't made the appt. He called approx. 2 hours later and said that he had "screwed up". He offered to set up another appt., but I declined.

It went very well. Chris of Serv Pro arrived around 7PM in the evening to perform a wet kitchen intervention. Moisture measurements were taken and they proceeded to open the floor up to allow for drying. Fans and dehumidifiers were placed and the mitigation process was started. They worked closely with our Insurance agency. There part in the "wet kitchen" probably lasted about 10 days in total. They were very attentive to our needs and did everything they can to support us through the mitigation process. Would I use them again......absolutely!
Description of Work: I talked to my insurance agent about "a little leak" in our kitchen and how the floor was buckling. She had me call Serv-Pro immediately. It is 7 PM at night and Chris shows up to help us!

Well first I tried not almost wait until the Big deal expired, I was frustrated because of phone tag. Fred's phone number had changed, but it did not take me but a couple of days to set up for Fred to start the work. After I discussed the area which was 4by 5, I would depend on his expertise since I did not think the whole ceiling needed to be replaced. Well they came over on Monday and I talked with Fred about the drywall mud details. He told me that he would work within my budget. This was very pleasant for me because I wanted to try and stay within my projected budget. Fred thoroughly inspected the drywall and the jagged edges that were in the middle, he explained to me how he would cut to smooth the drywall even with the beam. Fred's helper Greg would continue with the work, Greg was very detailed with his work. He measured the length and width then cut the drywall and preceded to fit into the open spot, he used the long screws and tape after which he used the first coat of mud. Greg cleaned up after each coat of mud at the end of the day. It would take him four days to finish and added the primer and the ceiling looked brand new, I am very pleased with the job. My wife had many good comments, it was a very professional job. I told Fred and Greg that I would most certainty call him for more business. It feels good, thanks folks for the recommendation.

I sent picture and sketch of what I want to Mr.Sons and he sent me estimate. I sent questions regarding the estimate and did not receive any reply for about a week. I contacted him again, and he simply replied "Sorry, at $500 I am just too busy to even consider it." Based on what he provided on his estimate, he seems to do good job, but I wish he would do smaller job.

This summer I remodeled 3 kitchens, a basement and a bathroom. My first responsibility is to those clients with paying jobs in production. This AL member was persistent about getting an estimate from me. I indicated to him this could take some time and that fencing is not my area of expertise? I finally was able to produce an estimate for him but he contacted me again wanting me to do the job for about half of what I thought it was worth. I declined and gave him the name of someone who I work with who will likely meet his requirements.

I had a great working relationship with these people and did a fair amount of research into the problems of the project proposed. I went to the house several times to meet with potential subcontractors to cost out their portion of the work. I spelled out all of the potential code problems and resulting costs. I produced a preliminary drawing and estimate framework, based on their requirements, addressing the limitations of the space. We were working into the “discovery” phase of finding out what the project was to be and what it would cost. Then, everything came to a grinding halt. The drawing we were working from showed everything that they were asking for as well as everything that is required by the building department. At least it included everything that was known to date. The building department does not require a sophisticated drawing for a permit to build a basement bathroom. It only needs to contain specific elements. Had I know this was a requirement, I could have easily provided architectural or professional design services.

Typically contractors would do this level of work for free (free estimate). I thought paying for a consultation would be a bit more high-tech with computer design software that shows a rendering of what the kitchen would look like and flexability to pick different colors, styles for cabinets, flooring, lighting, etc. The provider didn't even bring pictures or samples, just a tape measure and pad of paper.
Description of Work: Purchased Kitchen remodel design consultation through Angies List Big Deal. Provider came to the house, we discussed kitchen layout ideas, type of cabinets, flooring, etc. Provider took measurements and hand-sketched layout on graph paper. Made paper cut out of center island for purposes of shifting around layout. Provider furnished cost estimate a couple of weeks later.

Like many of you, I am consumed with HGTV. They can remodel a whole kitchen in a half hour segment, while you are out to dinner. And the “wow” design with portable devices that happens on reality tv, conveniently omits many hours of behind the scenes labor high above Manhattan at House & Gardens headquarters. I have my own system that tends to work for me, so I prefer an “old school” approach. I find portable device designing to be cumbersome and incomplete. It takes a great deal of time fiddling with these softwares to produce the detail that is needed for an accurate cabinet order. Try your hand at Ikea’s design software and you will understand what I mean. For the $75 paid to Angies List (not me), I spent 3 hours with this homeowner talking about needs and making a scale drawing on graph paper of the kitchen. I later got estimates with CAD renderings, from 2 cabinet lines based on this drawing so that he could see what the kitchen would look like. I spent about 2 hours producing a spreadsheet that would be the financial framework of their kitchen remodel without a single returned call or acknowledgment of effort. I agree that showing samples of my work is a good idea. Sometimes I forget and otherwise assume people have seen my work on line. Also, Angie’s List tends to present the ads in a way that is not consistent with my approach to business, but we are working on that. My goal is to initiate the complicated process of building a kitchen. Hopefully, beyond that you will want to work with me to complete your project in a way that fits your needs and looks great too.

Fred is extremely easy to work with. He listens, he communicates, and he's professional. If something came up (the counter top rep called him about an issue or if his guys needed some extra materials that I hadn't originally picked up), Fred let me know right away. Any potential problems were given attention and time to be handled before it became a "we need to stop work until this is resolved" issue. Pricing we very clear up front and anytime we did something ourselves that cancelled out a line item or something was added, Fred maintained and provided a tracking sheet of it all. There were no surprises. Furthermore, he was always available to go over and make suggestions before, during and post-renovation. There is a very good chance we are going to have additional projects started next year and if we do, our starting point will be Fred.
Description of Work: Fred and his crew tore out the existing kitchen (it was the original kitchen that had been in the house since 1978) and started from the floor up. Everything (electrical, plumbing) was brought up to code, cabinets we bought were built and installed, fixed the drywall, worked with the counter top store when they came in to measure/install, worked with the flooring company and with the tiling company so that everything went as smooth as possible. There were also a number of little touches (sealing things and making suggestions) that went beyond the scope of what we'd set out to do.

There were no additional charges. This was the first time I was using them. I would recommend them. They call you ahead of time to get an idea of what type of work you want done because they want to make sure that when they come over they have enough work for the whole four or eight hours. They just don't want to have to come over there for an hour. So they're very good in that manner. They came over and they were professional, they were clean and they cleaned up after themselves. It was a very good experience overall. They even called us back later to make sure everything was done OK and we were satisfied.

The quality of the finished product was very good. Fred and his team are hard workers and have high quality control standards. However, time and cost over-runs were excessive. Our bathroom remodel began in April, was nearly finished two months later (June), but permits and city inspections extended into November. In terms of cost, an informal estimate of $15,000 at the start ballooned to $23,000 by the time that all of the work was completed. Major cost increases were billed without prior discussion of the additional work required, and without approval by the homeowner of the associated expenses.

I appreciate the compliment referencing high quality work provided by my company. The (deleted member name) hired me to remodel their bathroom on a time and materials basis. There was no formal estimate. The job they initially described could be done for $15,000. I explained that the final cost could change depending on the cost of major components they chose. I explained that I could not possibly know what kind of problems would emerge behind the walls of a very old house. I provided and installed exactly what was asked for, including a custom cabinet, elaborate pocket door and a new Jeldwen window. I agree, all this was quite expensive, yet the owners were making the choices to fit their requirements. Costs for unpredictable structural repairs were presented and discussed often and they would not have progressed without approval. It should be noted: I provided a $600 discount on the final invoice. I did not bill for permits and related expenses (about $1000) The owners will not cooperate with the building inspections leaving permits open and ready to expire about one month from now. I am constantly trying to improve my business practices. All of my projects are different from the next, as well as all clients. I now insist on getting all the information on paper before the job begins. I bring in the plumber, the electrician, and all the providers for their costs to be entered on a spreadsheet. The rest, I can predict fairly easily. I do not consider an estimate done until the client makes all the choices for major items, provides those costs and agrees to the total figure. It’s a tedious and sometimes painful process. The many changes all occur before a check is written and before any work is done. I have always treated clients in an honest and fair way. This approach gives them ultimate control of cost and quality.

Fred came out to the house and spent a lot of time measuring and listening to what our wants and needs were. Within a week we had an estimated budget. Because of Thanksgiving we didn't start for several weeks. Demolition started Dec. 6. Everyone that worked was professional and cleaned up all debris. Fred oversaw all crafts. His selection of tile contractors was excellent. We love our new tile and especially the increased size and tile in shower. Fred was hands on and stayed in touch with us throughout the process. He was helpful and always honest. He and those working for him were always respectful in their tone and actions. Every time we walk into our new bathroom we love it a little more. Fred was awesome to work with and we would recommend him to others and would definitely work with him again!

I first called Fred after reading his reviews on Angie's List. Now I keep calling Fred for return jobs that I can't do when I know quality work will be necessary. He has helped me from kitchen cupboard shelves that kept falling down, to flashing on a bow window that a previous repair person did not add, causing poor water drainage. Fred goes the extra step to do the job right. His fees reflect his workmanship and his preference is to charge by his time not job.My last job in July was the removal of a potbelly stove in my living room and some additional small repairs. I gave a friend the stove, but he did not feel qualified to repair the roof and ceiling where the stove pipe was. Fred came to help. The hole in my roof was repaired in one day, even though he had to crawl in my small attic. The hole in my living room ceiling took a few more return visits by his assistant, but you can't even see where it was anymore. I now have more living room space and I am very happy with the results.
