Description of Work: Our ceiling on the first floor had water damage from a leaking pipe in the upstairs bathroom. Fred and his crew tore out the ceiling, replaced the malfunctioning pipe, re-drywalled, and painted. They also installed a handrail on the stairs going to the second level.

Description of Work: They provided me with a drawing of a potential option for renovating my kitchen. They were very nice and professional. I knew I was going to do most of the work on my own and would not be needing their services for the construction portion of the project. I'm not an architect so I needed some guidance, which is exactly what they provided.

Description of Work: This is kind of funny: I thought the name of his business is Fred & Sons, but it's not. Sons is his last name! The name of his business is Fred Sons. He measured and diagrammed our old 33-year old kitchen and suggested ideas for updated materials for counters, ideas for new cabinets and increased storage space. (He even found a cabinet, tall and thin, that I didn't even know we had!). He recommended smaller and less expensive appliances to replace those we had. His ideas were all very good! He left the diagram with us to use should we proceed with updating our kitchen.

Description of Work: His offer indicated bathroom remodel, sink and faucet replacement, minor plumbing, etc. I contacted him to swap out a small bathroom vanity and he told me I would need a plumber. He said that he generally subcontracts plumbing but the deal is so small that he couldn't for that price. He went on to say he would do it though, but repeated that I should have a plumber look at it next time I have one. He then said that Angie's List writes the Big Deals, that he did not list those items and work he does. I called Angie's List who said that the contractor does in fact write their own Big Deals. I'm not sure who is telling the truth, but I don't trust what he says now and do not want to do business with him.

Description of Work: Removed a basement closet and installed a pre-built wine storage room. He had to adjust the size of the pre-fab unit to make it fit. He then added oak trim at the ceiling and floor making it look as if it had been built for the space. An excellent job.

Description of Work: we expected that the contractor would be able to paint the peak of our home, replace, prime and paint a rotted upstairs windowsill and replace prime and paint a section of outside downstairs soffit. my husband was also hoping to get some chimney repair work done, but i didn't think that would fly! the add we responded to listed exterior painting,exterior carpentry and window rot repair among many other jobs. after speaking with fred sons initially, he said that they did mostly kitchens and bathrooms and not "high-up" work. but if they did the work we had in mind it would take much longer and cost much more. after several converations, we all decided to cancel the deal.

We have worked with them in the past and will continue to rely on them for our household projects. We are already planning future work.
Description of Work: I wanted our attic access panel moved to a more convenient location. They came in, assessed the situation and materials needed. One got started on cutting the drywall to gain access to the attic while the other went for materials. They gained access, made panel, trimmed out opening, primed and painted all to match existing ceiling. Changed lighting fixture and updated switch in laundry room.

 + 3 moreAll during this project there was good communication and flexibilty with schedule. They had to work around a lot of items still stored in basement. They really were easy to work with. I felt comfortable leaving them in my home while I ran to pick up kids, etc.. Plan on using Fred and Sons for future projects.
Description of Work: Contacted Fred to re-finish our basement after water damage. They removed damaged materials, installed and finished new drywall, electrical, flooring. Installed cabinets, trim, painted.

He solved a bathroom door problem no one else was willing to look at. It has been a pleasure working with Fred and we will definitely hire him again.
Description of Work: Fred Sons custom-made us a new bathroom door when our odd-sized opening wasn't available in ready-made. He reversed the door opening without any tell-tale sign of reversal on the door jam. He also stripped off old molding in a 2nd bathroom, then precisely cut around and up & down wall levels to install new molding. We have an older, wet plaster home so most of our remodeling is beyond everyday repairs.

He kept us appraised of the process at every step, he was thorough in his estimates (he works on time and materials), and always willing to explain his reasoning. He is a perfectionist in his work, the walls are beautiful, the new doors a pleasure. All of the carpentry and finish and trim work is of superior quality. Having people work in your home for an extended period of time can be challenging, but Fred made it less stressful and more pleasurable than any contractor we've used previously. We highly recommend Fred & Sons.
Description of Work: Fred completely remodeled our basement. He built walls, added insulation, installed new windows, and drywalled. He added a wine cellar and tiled the floors. He added electrical fixtures, repaired the stairs, painted the walls, and installed a home entertainment system. Additionally, Fred has repaired cabinet doors, installed additional electrical fixtures, weatherstripped our front door, and installed a new doorbell.

 + 3 moreIt's a turn-of-the-century house that has had it's share of slap repairs, and there's not a right angle or consistent molding anywhere. Fred came up with suggestions that included changes and subtleties we hadn't even considered, and created a seamless entrance that looks as though it were a part of the original house. From the overall plan down to the smallest details, Fred handled the job with the level of consideration as if it were his own home, including the cost-conscious aspects. He also performed the work with surprisingly little disturbance to our daily routine, and was far neater than either my wife or me. We could not have been more satisfied.
Description of Work: Aside from a laundry list of repairs that we were finally able to check off -- including plumbing, fine carpentry and electrical work -- Fred turned our living room into a home office. The living room had a wide, natural entrance next to the stairwell that needed to be closed off with a wall and door without looking like a blockade had been thrown up.

We were completely stumped as to how we were going to fit a 30-inch range into a 28-inch space, but Fred figured it out and it looks beautiful. The new study area is exactly what we envisioned, with additional nice touches such as small baseboard heating under the desks to warm our feet! Fred's artistic talent comes through in his eye for what works and his attention to detail. Fred works quickly and efficiently. He cleans up as he goes. He is great to have around. The best thing about Fred is that he's someone you can talk to. He doesn't try to sell you a one-size-fits-all solution. He listens to want to achieve and he will talk through the various options until you find a mutually away to do it that will meet your expectations. It was well worth the additional (minor) cost to bring Fred from Michigan. He plans his schedule with you so you know when to expect him. He completed the job on time and within budget.
Description of Work: Fred designed an executed a renovation of our basement, including the addition of a dual office/study area. Fred did everything from installing the new flooring and cabinetry to the electrical work for lighting and heating. He worked with us to select the right cabinets, task lighting, desktop, paint colors, etc. Fred also installed a new range and microwave in our kitchen, which involved cutting down existing cabinets to fit the new range. He vented the microwave to the outside and built a new lazy Susan in a base cabinet. The kitchen work involved complicated problem-solving to utilize existing cabinet doors and hardware. This is Fred's greatest asset. As a homeowner and an artist, he understands what can be saved vs. what needs to go. He seems to enjoy the challenge of finding the right solution, and producing a high-quality final product.

 + 4 moreHe is amazing. I would give him A++++ if possible. He is meticulous and knowledgeable and the price is reasonable. He lives in Michigan but works in the DC and Maryland area once a month. He charges by the hour no matter what the job is.
Description of Work: He comes to my house almost every month to do different things that we need. He installed my hardware floor; he had to cut it because it was a custom design with oak and mahogany. He has done electrical things like installing lights, hung doors and tile work. He charges $45.00 an hour and I don't remember the total cost of the floor.
