"This was a fun but challenging job. Our clients were renovating the upper level of a beautiful historic house in Royal Oak and wanted to maintain the authenticity of their 1916 built home. The old-school workmanship posed some challenges in regards to floor heights and transitions. We were able to work with our clients and install some beautiful mosaic octagon with dot porcelain tile reminiscent to a tile that may have been used when their house was built. We were able to adjust the floor heights and install a custom tapered marble threshold to give a natural look and a smooth transition. It was fun working in the city I grew up in again and the floor tile installation worked out beautifully. We are thankful to have once again been able to serve our valued Angie's List clients and give them the authentic appearance they were looking for and providing them with a durable lifetime installation. Thank you for choosing Quality Tile, Inc. God Bless, Dean"
"This was a back splash using a tight weave herringbone stone tile that had an irregular surface. The installation was unique in that it was designed to be installed with no grout. In working with mosaic sheet tile it's important that you cannot "read the sheets" meaning you cannot see where one sheet starts and the other one stops. Using the tiny herringbone stone tile on a smaller chopped up area makes this even more challenging. The small individual stone tiles themselves had an irregular humped up surface on each individual small piece and the sheets themselves had tiny gaps although small were visible between tiles. We felt it would give a better overall appearance if we grouted the stone tile even though the manufacture and the store indicated it was not recommended. We felt the appearance of the sheets looked unfinished with the gaps between the individual tiny stone tiles. We decided to do a test with a small portion of the leftover tile and it looked great. So after reviewing it with our clients we decided to grout the whole job. The grouted and sealed mosaic hearing bone stone tile proved to be a one-of-a-kind beautiful application on the back splash which was the focal point of their kitchen. Thank you for choosing us to install your mosaic stone back splash tile. It is our honor to serve. God Bless, Dean"
"This was a partial bath remodel and a very nice local job for us. Timing was important for our clients. They were going out of town and wanted to have the work done while they were away. A contractor friend of mine worked with us and replaced their bathtub and vanity as well as all the other carpentry, plumbing, drywall, and electrical work required prior to tile installation. We installed all the tile per our customers specifications and our contractor put on the finishing touches. Sure came out nice and worked into our clients timing beautifully. Looking forward to working on their kitchen floor in the future when the time is right for them. It's our privilege working with these clients and all our Angie's list members. Thanks for allowing us to serve. Dean"
"This was a fun job. The clients called me and said they got our number from the Schluter website as an approved certified Schluter system contractor. Unbeknownst to me it turns out they were also Angie's list members. The client had done their own demolition work and found mold beneath the surface of their stall shower. They researched online and found the Schluter system to be their preferred method of installation. It's a state of the art installation system and requires extensive classroom and hands on training to be proficient. Although some contractors claim to know how to use the products it is highly advised to all consumers to make sure your tile contractor is licensed by the state of Michigan and is a certified Schluter system contractor as there are some key elements to the system that must be adhered to otherwise the client could experience undesirable results. They did pick some nice tile and the job came out beautiful. But the best part for the client / members is that they will never again have to worry about water passing beneath the surface of their stall shower for the duration of their homeownership. The job involved not only a stall shower but the bathroom floor and tub surround as well. It also involved some carpentry, plumbing and drywall work, and installation of their new vanity. A general contractor friend of mine was kind enough to do all the work other than the tile installation portion. As a result the job required some tile work initially and then after the vanity and other portions were complete more tile work to finish up the tile installation. Four or five of our crew members worked on the job and the clients took note of all their names and prepared thank you cards and a $50 bonus for each worker that was on their job. It was totally unexpected and an extremely pleasant surprise for each worker and we are so grateful to have been allowed the opportunity to work in our clients home on their tile installation project. We love what we do and clients like these make our job so very rewarding. Thanks again, God bless you and your family"
"This was a small job but required a high level of expertise in that we were called in to tile over rough brick using small 1" x 1" mosaic glass tile. It involved first coating all the brick with a cement bed so as to flatten it out to receive the glass tiles. The next day the mosaic glass tile was installed using special setting material so as to ensure the glass would grab solid and wouldn't come off if it became heated up. Then the glass tile was grouted being careful to remove any excess setting material that may have worked its way through the tiny joints between the glass tiles so as not to take away from the beauty of iridescent mosaic glass tiles. It wasn't a big job but still challenging and rewarding. Thank you for choosing us to install your beautiful tile on the focal point fireplace surround in your living room. Dean"
Our project scope was extensively tricky in detail and size. Our master suite shower alone can fit four or five people in it, included a bench, and even had a sloped ceiling. Dean spent atleast 8 - 10 hours alone over multiple meetings with us to go over every detail, stone, and accent piece to ensure the project was done right and most importantly would stand the test of time.
Quality Tile and its tile artists take pride in what they do and won't leave a job until it is done right. A great example of this was our master bath suite nook where the air tub sat. There is a double arch, one large and one half sized. The half sized arch is inset with a shelf for candles, soap, etc. Originally, we were only going to do tile in the back of it because the cutting required for the curved pieces to outline the arch (inside, outside) would have been too much for an already extended budget. When the tile artists were laying the tile for this, they felt it didn't look right without the curved accents. The artist called Dean, told him, and Dean gave the thumbs up to do what he wanted to make it right. When my wife saw the finished design, she was blown away as was I. Now she has her dream tub cove down to the last accent tile, thanks to Quality Tile. And no, they did not charge us for this extra labor.
We have learned that tile projects, when done right, sealed right to prevent water leaks, etc are certainly not cheap. We couldn't fully appreciate this until we saw the finished project and the detail work that went into it. Quality Tile was hands down worth every penny, and we will, without question, hire them again in the future for our next project.
"These members were great to work with. They had purchased a home and were totally renovating it before moving in. The builder is a friend of mine and we've worked together for over 25 years and the clients designer had some great ideas. The upper level master bath was a one of a kind very large suite with a unique design and some very specific tile specifications. The tile being used was a combination of porcelain tile, natural stone, liner bars, chair rail, mosaic tile, and slab stock marble. The porcelain tile offered no bull nose trim which presented some challenges. We had to get creative in the way we integrated the stone tile and the porcelain tile to trim out the shower and tub area to bring it all together with no rough exposed edges to create the perfect balance of porcelain and stone tile. The designer was great to work with and open for suggestions to not only put together a beautiful end result but to also create a durable lifetime application. The members were also a joy to work for and the wife brought fresh baked cookies. We would like to extend our thanks to our builder, the Angie's list members, and designer for giving us the opportunity to work on this challenging but fun project. We look forward to working together again as there are a few more tile projects our members are considering for the future. Thanks again, God bless, Dean"
"On this installation our Angies list members had some specific ideas about how they wanted their tile laid out in regards to the feature stripe. It offered some challenges in that the stripe was raised above the other tile and there were multiple outlets to consider. We were able to achieve the desired design by making some minor adjustments and it came out looking great yet being a very user friendly application. It's great to be able to work with so many nice people and to help bring their ideas to life. Thank you for allowing us the privilege of working in your home. Dean"
"This was a pretty straight forward job. Remove the improperly installed gloss wall tile off the bathroom floor that was coming up due to being mounted directly over the plywood and install proper cement sub flooring then install the new floor tile per the guidelines as outlined by the Tile Council of North America. Tile installation is one area where you just can't skip important steps or the installation will begin to come apart as this relatively newer installation did. These clients were so kind and pleasant to work for. The wife makes aprons as part of her ministry and she blessed me with a hand made apron for my wife. Thank you so much!"
"This is a family that had a job transfer and needed to move out of state fast but the bathrooms needed updating before the house could be sold. As soon as the bathrooms were completed the second buyer that came through bought the house on the spot. It was great to be part of their exciting new venture. Wishing them all the best in their new home on the east coast."
"This couple had just repainted the inside of their home and decided to update by installing new tile over the existing slate tile in the foyer and on the fireplace hearth. I showed them some samples and they choose a nice tile but it was a disappointment when upon examining the existing slate we discovered it to be unstable in the foyer making it unsuitable for the tile over tile application. The demolition could potentially send dust throughout the home on new freshly painted walls. However we were able to tarp off the area in the foyer and keep all the dust out of the house. It really modernized their home by getting rid of the old slate and the tile they choose looked beautiful. It was great to see it all come together for them. Thanks so much for allowing us to work in your home."
"This was a fun job. Our client had recently moved into his new house. He did his homework and alredy located the matching tile to extend his master bath floor tile to include a vanity area separated by a doorway with a threshold. It came out great and you couldn't tell where the new tile started and the old tile left off. He had a good idea to extend the tile as it brought the two areas together and it was great to be able to help make it happen. Thank you for allowing us to be a small part of making your new house your home. God Bless you and your family."
"It was great working with these clients. They had flood damage and called on Saturday to see if we could get their installation done ASAP because their TV room was all tore up and another contractor they had initially hired kept putting them off. We were able to finish their installation by the following Saturday. Our work can be very rewarding and Angie's List is a great resource for putting people together. Thank you for the kind words and the opportunity to serve."
"It was our pleasure working with these clients. In receiving other bids they were told that the floor thickness would be a problem. We were able to help them overcome some issues with the floor height and achieve a solid permanent installation. Every tile installation is unique and simply one method is not applicable to all installations. It's very important to be skilled in all aspects of tile installation. We've been in business since 1986 and we understand the importance of staying informed with all the latest technology & continued education with the most modern techniques as outlined by the Tile Council of North America. We regularly attend numerous workshops and classes to further our knowledge in the industry. Colossians 3:23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord...Thank you and all our Angies List members for allowing us to work in your homes."
"This bathroom installation was very challenging in that we had to determine what portion could be salvaged, which areas had to be torn out, and how much more additional field tile, bull nose tile, and the more costly special order feature tile would be needed to complete the project. Our clients had the unpleasant experience of a poor or maybe just inexperienced contractor that had to be asked to leave the project. There seems to be a trend since the downturn in the economy that we all experienced over the last few years in that many people who were displaced sought to go into various aspects of the building industry. Unfortunately some tried tile installation and although may have had good intentions it's a specialty area of construction and requires a long hands on training apprenticeship period and it takes a highly skilled tradesman to install tile properly. In other cases some builders that do the majority of all the work in a bathroom or kitchen (but normally sub contract out the tile installation to seasoned skilled tile contractors) have attempted to do the tile work themselves in an attempt to economize with less than desirable results. In most cases these two scenarios were all done with good intentions. However now that the economy has picked back up we are still seeing some instances of this. We were called in just last month to clean up and repair a brand new just installed very large floor in Northville and it was several thousand dollars of additional expense to the home owners. Although it's not always enjoyable to take on another contractors mess we are happy to help out when ever we can. I think the last three or four years has created a lot of work for professional tile contractors as now the improperly installed tile is starting to fail in many applications with the worst being in bathrooms where improperly installed tile can become a major health concern with mold and mildew. We've receive countless calls regarding shower pans that are now fully saturated and starting to leak (it takes about a year or two before it starts showing up and leaking down stairs or through the walls). Once it's visible it's already too late the damage is done and it's time for demolition and removal of all mold affected areas. Fortunately for our clients on this bathroom project they spotted the poor workmanship before completion of the job. We were able to salvage their bathroom tile project and thankfully achieve a beautiful result. They were great to work with cheering us on the whole time. It's actually very rewarding to be able to make someone's vision come to life. They were kind enough to invite us back to install tile on their fireplace hearth as well. Unbeknownst to us they were Angie's List clients. We would like to say Thank You for the kind words and for the opportunity to work in your home. We are truly grateful for all our Angie's List clients and the positive uplifting words of encouragement. Proverbs 3:5,6 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart: and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths."
"Thank you for allowing us to work in your home. Although this wasn't a big job it's very rewarding to put a non working bathroom back together and make it fully functional. We are often call upon to clean up or repair work done by other tradesmen and we do our best to do what we can to get the project to a workable and presentable level and in some cases prevent further damage. Thanks again, Dean"
"It was a joy working with these clients. From the beginning I could tell that this would be a good fit for our company. They requested suggestions regarding design and application and had some specific ideas of their own. They were receptive to the suggestions made and between their initial ideas and ours the bathroom came out beautiful. It's a master bath suite with a stall shower that connects to a deck tub and has a connecting separate toilet room. The linear mosaic glass and stone tile made for a beautiful accent in the shower and around the splash of the deck tub. The slab stock marble that we supplied for the shower curb, knee wall cap and threshold turned out to be a perfect match to compliment the tile that our clients had already purchased. The Euro clear glass shower door and surround over the knee wall was the final touch. Thanks so much to our clients for giving us the opportunity to work in their home. Isaiah 26:3 You Lord give perfect peace to those who keep their purpose firm and put their trust in you."
From our first phone call to the owner, Dean Skewes, our interaction with him was completely professional. He came out promptly to give us an estimate and to discuss the details of the job. He gave detailed answers to our questions and impressed us with his knowledge of the tile installation business (not just a salesman). In particular we discussed how to approach the master bathroom, which has one wall tiled to a height of 3'. Because it was an overtile job, a standard installation of new coving would overlap the bottom few inches of the wall tiling, which we did not want. Dean made several initial suggestions, including that we look for through-body porcelain tiles that could be cut down to make bullnose tiles to fit yet preserve the surface appearance.
After a couple of trips to the tile store and phone discussions with Dean, we suggested instead a conventional tile with a 6" cove base that could be cut to bullnose. Dean was receptive to this idea, so we selected tile we really liked with available 6" cove base for the job.
Tile installation was timely, the installers started about a week after Quality Tile received the tile (it was not a stock item and had to be ordered). Dean came with the installers the first morning to give them instructions and make sure everything was going well. The first day they removed the tile and base from the 1/2 bath and retiled it, and did the tile over in one of the upstairs baths. The next day they came back to grout the two bathrooms. Day three they sealed the tile and grout, and on day four Dean had arranged for a plumber to reinstall the toilets.
With the first two bathrooms completed and functioning, they then repeated the process with the master bathroom (with the wall tile).
The new tile floors look great, including the section below the wall tile. The installation job went smoothly. The price for the job was not the cheapest estimate we got, but we feel that it was worth a little extra because they really knew what they were doing.
The only problem was discovered a day after they finished, when we discovered a small scratch in the paint of the upstairs bathroom, such that the darker paint below shows through. We will have to touch up this area with paint.
"This custom porcelain tile installation went very smoothly but did involve tearing out the old tile and concrete flooring and sanitary base in one bath and tearing out the existing sanitary base in two other baths prior to installing new concrete, tile, and sanitary base in the one bath and new tile and sanitary base in the other two baths. The job also included removing and replacing three toilets. Unknown to us we must have slightly nicked one of the walls in the tear out process. Seeing our review I was made aware of it so I followed up and visited with our clients the next day and they couldn't remember where the spot was to show me and that the husband had already touched it up. He told me it was a 10 minute job and that included getting the paint out and putting it back. We all had a little laugh over it. Then they told me how happy they were with our service and how much they really liked the new floors (they did pick out some beautiful tile). Then they told me that they would be calling me once again if they ever have any tile work in the future. We would like to say thank you to these customers because it is so rewarding to be able to perform a permanent installation for such nice people. We are truly grateful for all our Angies List clients and to have been able to serve since 1986. Thanks again, Dean"
