Initially everything was great. Prompt & area was cleaned up. However, when they ground my stump they cut my sprinkler system line & will not cover the repair. So - stating they are fully insured, evidently, does not mean liability insurance. Per the owner the "fully bonded & insured" covers workmans comp & personal injury.

We had a severe storm and a willow tree was hanging over the house. I was home alone and felt I needed to get someone here as soon as possible. My husband said to look in the yellow pages. DJs tree service was one of the first listed. I called them. I have to say, they came within the hour and cut the tree down, which took about an hour. Then gave me a sad song about how busy they were and didn't not have time to clean up. The backyard was a mess. And then the shocker. Because it was a necessity and I was in shock of the thought of the tree falling on the house, I neglected to get a proposed price. But that was not a reason to gouge me! When I got the checkbook out and asked them how much I owed, the owner blurted out, "$2,750"!!!!!! I tried to challenge him, but again he gave me a song and dance about how they responded quickly! As I said, I was home alone and there was four guys, so I didn't feel comfortable not paying it. To this day, my husband has to listen to me complain about the bill. I contacted the BBB, and they said they would not get involved with issues regarding price gouging.

Dan did a great job. He was able to perform the work shortly after our request was made, was on time, worked quickly and efficiently, cleaned up and even came back the next day to clean off the sidewalk in front of the house (we hadn't asked him to do this!). We would definitely hire him again!

The wait seemed long, but the work was finally performed at the end of May. It was of course a massive job which took all day, and although I was not prepared for the resulting mess, the result is tolerable. Some final clean-up is necessary as well as the grinding down of the large stump, and Dan's crew is supposed to come out to do this within the next few, ... or several, days. We have had a lot of rain this spring which likely creates unwanted obstacles for tree removal, and I am prepared to excuse Dan for the delay. I may .... or may not .... use DJ's Professional Tree Service for tree removal should such need arise in the future.
Description of Work: On April 4, 2013, Dan came to give me an estimate to remove an 80 foot Norway pine, a slightly smaller tree and a limb on a choke cherry, all three relatively close to my house. I signed a contract for the work and paid him slightly less than half down. Subsequent contacts with Dan consisted of him alternately promising to come "tomorrow" and alternately saying he could not come. He did not respond to emails and later explained that his system was down. He does not seem to be accredited with the Better Business Bureau even though his website states this.

The tree trimming crew showed up on time and got right to work. Although the price quoted was to account for 2 days work to complete the job, the crew was done in less than 5 hours (they started at 7:30 AM sharp and were gone before 12:30 PM). They did a good job, except they left one dead 3" branch overhanging a main walkway, just off the parking lot area. When I received the bill a few days later, I left Dan Parker a voicemail message asking that the dead branch be cut down. I also asked if the charge of $4,450 was still valid, as they had only worked less than 5 hours to complete the entire job, instead of two days. This works out to a billing rate of nearly $1,000 per hour. A day or two later someone showed up while I was gone and took a smaller dead branch that had fallen from higher up in the tree and stuck and wedged onto to the 3" branch in question, leaving the dead 3" branch. The next day, Dan Parker called and said they had removed the branch in question, and that the $4,450 charge still stood because they had to "hire an additional crew" for the job to be completed so quick. I then emailed him a picture of the branch in question and asked for it to be removed. He finally called on 10/18/12, wanting payment immediately. When I reminded him of the branch still needing removal, he said he would have to come and see it when I was there to make sure they got the right branch. He came on 10/19/12 and we looked at the branch. He said the entire tree was dead (which it was), and that they would take it down for another $575. When I balked at that, he said they would cut down the 3" branch for $200. When I said I though that was ridiculous, he asked for payment in full, since we weren't going to purchase any more service. I paid the entire $4,450 amount, but will NEVER use or recommend this tree service again to anyone, for any reason. Even if it wasn't supposed to be included in what they had contracted to do (which is his claim), the good will to complete the job to the CUSTOMER's satisfaction is usually important.
Description of Work: As manager of a large apartment complex, called DJ's for a quote to trim back trees that are overhanging the parking lot areas and specific trees that are too close to the building, or are in contact with the roof structure. Dan Parker quoted me on the spot a cost of $4,450 for which it would take 2 days to complete the work. I DID agree to the price, although I though it was definitely on the high side. On the plus side, he was the only tree service I called that responded back to me the same day. We setup the two days for the work to be done, having all tenants move their cars out of the areas they would be working to prevent any damage to cars.

Needed a stand of 5 large pines removed plus one additional spruce stand alone in another area. The pines had grown up and through all of the energy/cable lines running to the home and were footed in a mass of ground cover of vines. In the original quote I had also asked/paid to have the stumps removed, Dan and his crew had completed work for two neighbors and they were pleased with his service. I had received a number of estimates and he was within the lower range of all them- there was a wide spread so most definately do recommend contacting a number of services. He was timely, prompt and in the area without the ground cover the stump had been ground and the area was left as if there had been no tree there at all. In the area of the ground cover, it became noticeable as I employed a number of vegetation killers and cleared the vines by hand that a number of the stumps and root systems had not been ground sufficiently. A return call in 9/2011 was made to Dan and delays not of his making (Miss Digg necessary to make 3 calls to have completed/rain and extremely wet conditions) dragged out the completion date. Once Miss Digg finally completed their work and the rain let up he made it out.. Due to a number of the trees having wide surface root systems extended quite a ways out into the yard, he charged an additional $175 to remove those as well., I was pleased with his work, his willingness to come back and complete the job. I can't know if it was thought if I kept the area in ground cover that I would not notice the stumps had not been ground or if it truly was an oversight or a difficult task with so much ground cover in place. I do know that he made it right some 5 months later when called and was very conscientious in getting the work done.
Description of Work: 5 large pines and 1 medium sized spruce, removed with stumps ground and wood chips removed.

Please see the above scenario. After he started on removing the tree from my house another tree service pulled into my driveway. He quickly went over and started talking to the person. As I approached he quickly closed the distance between me and the other tree service's truck and told me that he knew the person and they were just talking. Thinking back on it, it was almost like he didn't want me to talk to the other tree service. Like he didn't want any competition or interference. I wish I knew what he said to them. I wonder how many others he scammed like this after that storm. I realize that some will say that I really didn't lose any money since the insurance paid him but I just can't see someone engaging in that type of behavior and get paid at least three times more than he should have. Plus, I had to start, fix and finish the work that he got paid for and he exhausted almost all of my $500 tree service limit and there is still a lot of debris from other trees that fell in that storm. DO NOT HIRE THIS MAN!
Description of Work: That big storm that went through Paw Paw on Monday, July 11 at approximately 10:30 am snapped a large oak tree about 25 feet up causing it to fall on my house with the end of broken trunk on my driveway and the rest of the tree resting against the exterior wall of my house. I was in Kalamazoo at the time and arrived back home about 1:30 pm. I called my insurance company and they informed me that as a responsible home owner I needed to get the tree removed immediately and have the hole in my roof covered to prevent further damage and if I fail to do this they will not be responsible for any additional damage. So, I called a lot of tree services and most didn't even have an answering machine due to lack of power, I presume. I was only able to leave messages for four tree services. DJ tree service was the only one to respond that day and after I explained my situation he told me that he would be out there later this afternoon. At about 9:00 pm I figured he wasn't going to make it nor was I going to hear from any other tree service. So, I grabbed my chainsaw and climbed on the roof and started removing limbs to reduce the weight of the tree. When I started, the tree extended completely over the peak of the roof and was laying on my power lines on the opposite side of the house. I kept paring away at it until there was only about four to six feet of limbs extending past the exterior wall that the tree hit and was resting on. I threw the branches off the back of my house making a large pile in my backyard. I continued calling more companies the following day and was able to leave more messages. Dan and his crew arrived early afternoon that day and immediately started instructing his crew to start taking the tree off the roof. When I saw him drive in I put on some shoes to go out and meet him. By that time his crew was in full swing and he started apologizing for not making it yesterday because there were trees down all over. I asked him how much he was going to charge and he told me not to worry about it that he would deal directly with my insurance company as he walked away still shouting to his four man crew. He pulled his truck out on the road where I attempted again to get him to tell me how much he was going to charge. Again, he told me not to worry that he would deal directly with my insurance company as he walked away toward my house and his crew. I stood by as he kept giving orders until I told him that I think I only have a $500 tree service limit. He said don't worry, it's all depends on how you write it up. In the mean time his crew was dropping large logs on my deck. So, I told them to be careful I didn't want them cracking my deck. He told me that if they break anything you can just tell your insurance it broke in the storm. I told him I already took pictures of all the damage so they will know. Meanwhile, his crew continued to just drop it on my deck and bushes. That part of my deck is at ground level so if they did crack any boards I would only be able to see them from underneath which is impossible. Unless they were cracked all the way through. After about forty-five minutes the tree was off and laying in three different piles, including the one I mostly made in the backyard. I asked him again how much he thought this would cost and he said don't worry you're not even close to your $500. His crew then covered the large hole in my roof with two flimsy small plastic tarps. They had the right idea by sliding the tarps under the shingles on top but they broke off two shingles and a couple large pieces off the other shingles they were trying to slide the tarp under. They nailed the two tarps along the top and down the sides with the tarps overlapping about 2" in the middle. They then wrapped it around the broken eaves nailing the tarps on either side of the hole on the bottom of the good part of the eaves. They didn't even bother bending over a sharp corner of drip edge that was sticking out already making a hole. So, I had to get my calk gun with roofing tar in it and tar under the tarp all the places where water could get under the tarps. I even had to tar between the two tarps where they vertically overlapped only two inches and bend that sharp piece of drip edge to prevent the hole from getting any bigger He finally came back the following Monday July 18, 2011 after I had called him a couple of times to make sure he hadn't forgotten about me. He brought two crew members and this heavyduty chipper that ate 10" diameter logs. The chipper made fast work of the piles and I noticed that the two man crew had rakes leaning aganist the truck and that Dan had taken off. Before he left I told him that I had talked to the insurance agent assigned to my claim and she told me that the cost of removing the tree from my house would be applied to the cost of repairing my house and that any debris clean up would be applied to the $500 tree service. He said OK. Then I told him I would like to see his write up of the job before he sends it to my insurance. He just said Yeah, OK, when I get around to it, I'm pretty busy. Well, I never heard from him again even though I've called to remind him about seeing the bill. After his crew left I realized that they raked very little of the small branches and leaves that came off of the tree they removed from the house where the three piles were. I had to get my rake out and finish the job. Today, Thursday, July 21st, I talked to my insurance agent and she informed me that he submitted a bill for $2900.00! $2400.00 for removing the tree from the house that he previously said wasn't even close to my $500 limit and that I had already removed most of the limbs leaving one large limb that had broken off the main trunk and was leaning against the eaves next to the trunk and the trunk with four to six feet of limbs sticking out of the top of the trunk leaning on the exterior wall of the house. Then he charged $400.00 for about an hour of clean up which I had to finish.

In July 2008 I called DJ's to remove a maple tree that was topped in a major windstorm. The top was hanging on a shredded trunk. The tree had been approx.15-20 ft. tall and 4"-5" in diameter. After making one cut to sever the top from the trunk and another at ground level, the tree was removed to a shredder in two pieces. The process took approximately 20 minutes. I was shocked when told the cost: $575. Dan Parker insisted I make out the check to him personally, not his company! In March 2009 I had another larger maple removed (20'-30' tall, 6"-8" dia.) that was too close to the house. This tree was a few feet from the tree removed by DJ's so the job was very similar except for the tree size. Another company's cost for the same service: $250. After removal of the second tree, I called Dan Parker to tell him I felt I had been overcharged and asked for an adjustment. He said he had set prices and nothing could be done.
Description of Work: Removal and shredding of a wind-damaged tree that had been topped at trunk level.
