Description of Work: We've had English Gardens landscape service every year since 2008, at two different residences. We have had them do everything from a complete design and installation to our front and back yards, including paver patios, and outdoor lighting, to a simple "Spring Clean-up." We have had other contractors do smaller projects for us (take down a tree, or grind stumps) and it was always disappointing. Often there was collateral damage or other plantings, or repeated, unexplained delays. This doesn't happen with English Gardens. They call back when they say they will. If there is bad weather, and they have to re-schedule, they call. Other services may be a bit cheaper, but I don't have time to mess around with getting something corrected when a contractor screws up. | |If plants don't survive a Winter, English Gardens comes back and replaces it, no problem. They just show up. I don't have to hunt them down or make multiple phone calls. And when they are done, they clean up! | |They send me a notice every Spring for Spring Clean-up. Again, I don't have to remember, find the number again, explain what I want. I just approve and it's done. | |We are now in the process of a big re-design for a new home. I anticipate the cost will be over $50,000 when all is said and done. We will have to complete it in phases, over several years. Their designers are adept at planning ahead, advising us what needs to be done first (like fixing drainage), helping us stretch our budget (we have done the demolition ourselves), and working with us on style and preference (formal gardens vs. casual; low vs. high maintenance plants) so we have always been satisfied in the end. If we weren't, they fixed it!

In my first meeting with their designer, I told her I had black walnut tress and any plants used needed to be compatible with them. She kind of blew me off when I offered to give her a list of plants/shrubs that don't thrive with black walnut, so I figured she knew the problems with those trees. I also stressed to her that I would like native plants used as much as possible. I liked her design after we tweaked a few things, but I questioned her use of viburnum and hydrangea with black walnuts. She said they were a strain that would do fine. She was on time for our meetings, polite, but seemed a bit inexperienced. The work was done in the heat of July, 2012. The workers were efficient and very polite. They cleaned up all debris when they were done. I was told to water! I did. The designer also told me that the coral bells that were planted in the full-sun area would look a little "crunchy" during the heat but they would be fine. I was pleased with the gardens and stonework. Predictably, the heat took its toll on some of the plants. However, the coral bells in the sunny area never really have thrived or grown at all and several died and had to be replaced. They are limping along, not looking too great. Information on coral bells says to plant in part sun/shade - these are in full sun. I have other coral bells in part shade and they are fine. One of the viburnum died and was replaced; another was at death's door but I watered it every day for 30 mins. and it came back. I was told to water them a lot and believe me, I have. So much for "native plants." Whenever I would call to report a problem with a plant, The person I spoke to was responsive and they replaced at least 4 plants, including one hydrangea and one viburnum (both listed as "probably will not grow" within the black walnut tree's toxicity). The main problem with this job was the initial design. The designer didn't seem to know, or take into account, the toxicity of black walnut trees. She ignored my request for native plants that thrive without much watering. Now I am left with small, scraggly plants with an enormous need for water. I will probably need to replace many of these varieties with ones compatible with black walnut. A lot of money for a garden that doesn't look like it's thriving.

I am very disappointed (see above). I will definitely write another review Thursday when I find out what they are going to do about fixing this I have called a lawyer, but he says that unless I can prove that they never told me about the drainage pipe and/or digging deeper than they did, I have no case.
Description of Work: In June, I called English Gardens to deepen my pond so that I could have koi fish in it. The representative came and told me it could be done without wreaking my patio that English Gardens had put in a few years ago. I gave Mr. Weber $200.00 for the design plan which he was supposed to present to me on 6/22/12. A few days later he came back, looked at the pond again and said he would take off the $200.00 off my bill; he said I did not really need a design plan. They came July 12th or 13th, finished digging it deeper in one day. Cost $7,398.24. They even gave me a nicer waterfall. What they never told me was that I might need a drainage pipe to remove excess water if we had a heavy rainfall and/or heavy snow melt. The last three days of July, we had rain; the last day being very heavy rain. I came home after running errands and found my next door neighbors calling me to take a look at the pond. The pond after three days of rain had overflowed; my neighbor in order to save my fish had to dig a ditch around the left side of the pond and around both sides of my garden. My backyard was a miniature swamp; you could wade in it. I have one tree that now has some of its roots sticking out. I immediately called English Gardens; Mr. Weber came out and said they were not responsible for the heavy rain; if I want a drainage pipe for the excessive water which they could put in and/or if I want it a little deeper more (it is 2 and1/2 feet deep now and is now 6 by 8) that it would cost me extra. When I said that it was their fault because they never gave me a design plan nor did they ever tell me that the pond would overflow, they said I would still have to pay extra. Today the waterfall stopped working; the water from the previous rainfall never became clear. I use the stuff to clear off the water but the water is very filthy. My neighbor is going to try to save my fish tomorrow. English Gardens said they would be over on Thursday to look at the pond and waterfall. They will probably try and make me pay again for any work they might have to do; but I am not paying for their mistake. I am a Senior Citizen and a single woman without a husband, so they think since I don't have a husband they can get more money from me. I would never hire them again. If they don't fix it, I might have to find someone else from Angie's List who is better at Landscaping a Pond/Waterfall then they are. Update 8/9/12: As promised, here is my second review re: English Gardens. They came today again. My neighbor who is a man was with me this time. He told them the problem with the waterfall. He finally got it started after several tries. He then told English Gardens that they should make on the right side a higher barricade like they did on the left side, so the water would not overflow. He also told them about the dummy pipe they put in supposedly for the drainage without telling me that I could have a drainage pipe and have it hooked up to that pipe to make the water go underground. Mr. Weber along with another man took pictures, it was raining and it overflowed a bit in the morning. Now Mr. Weber tells me that I don't need a higher barricade on the right side nor do I need a drainage hookup. That he would talk to his supervisor and get back with me later this afternoon. His suggestion was to lower the pump that circulates the flow of the waterfall. He says it is to high and that that is what causing the overflow. So far, this afternoon they have not gotten back with me. I asked him why when he was here after the first heavy rainfall, he told me I might need a drainage pipe hookup and now all of a sudden I don't need one. He had no answer, just a blank stare. This evening, I called and this time I left a message for his supervisor saying if they don't fix it correctly, that I would see an attorney and sue them. I have not heard from Mr. Weber who should have made a design plan for me in the first place nor from his supervisor. If I hear from them I will let the members know what is going on.

They have been doing the job for me for 4-5 years now. They provide the lights for me every year. They will come out in the second week of January 2012 to take the lights out. You can tell them when to come out and take the lights out. I spent about $1,000 on the job. I have been married for six years. I never decorate the outside of my house. My husband wanted the lights. He had seen their advertisement. So, he contacted them. The fellow came out and they both discussed as to what should be done and how much should be done. I have a weeping cherry at the back of the house as well. The first year that I used them, they set a timer on that tree; it would light up and turn off at the set time. The lights were annoying to me in the bedroom. So, I did not ask them to do that tree after that. Each year, I have added or taken away certain things. I have never used anybody else. There could be cheaper providers, but this company has given me good service. I have never investigated the others. It is a reputable company. I have shopped there. I have never had them do the landscaping work. It is a company I am familiar with. They have had different salespersons almost every year I have used them. Last two years, they have sent out the same salesperson and sometimes, he is hard to get hold of. He does not return calls promptly. I did not have problems with the other salespersons, though. I have not compared their price and so, I cannot rate the same. Also, I have never had to call them back because of a problem. I will use them again in the future.
Description of Work: I had Christmas lights put out by English Gardens Landscape Department, a month ago. They hung the lights on three pine trees at the back of my house. In the front, they did the work around the door and an arch. They put up wreath above the door. They also hung lights on the weeping cherry tree. The weeping cherry had lots of lights. They also put up lights in my entryway, which has a lot of columns.

It went pretty badly. I had a consultation with their landscape designer. I was just going to have them do a few shrubs for privacy but I let her draw up a plan for the whole yard and it looked fantastic. I decided to go ahead with the whole thing --- landscaping on three sides and a circular patio design leading to an existing deck. A small circle overlapping a large circle, which is what I requested. I have no complaints about the landscaping. It looked (and still looks) beautiful. But she promised to email me how to care for the plants, etc. and she never did. I reminded her three times. I was home sick in bed the day the did the hardscape. As soon as I looked out the window I knew it wasn't right. But they were already done. The work was beautiful but the design was off. They hadn't started far enough away so they had to adjust the circles to squeeze them in. They were out of proportion. I couldn't really talk to the workers because they didn't speak English. I called English Gardens immediately. She was angry that they had come out a day ahead of schedule without telling her because she was supposed to be there to supervise. She came out the next day or so and I showed her the problem. She told me it looked fine. I showed her the design she had drawn. She said she'd talk to her boss, or something. Emails back and forth. I spoke to her supervisor, he came out to see it. They had the guys come out again and try to adjust it. It still wasn't right. Emails back and forth, phone calls. The landscape designer was not willing to admit that it was wrong. I wrote a long, detailed letter to her boss, including pictures I had taken. I said, "This might be a small project to you but it's huge to me and I need to have it done right." Then more boss types came out and looked at it. Then I got an email saying they would do it over but that they would need additional materials and I would have to pay the difference. And a curt phone call from the landscape designer saying that I needed to pay the balance soon or else it would go to a collection agency. I went to see a lawyer, who looked everything over and said that I was in the right and that they were giving me the runaround. I left a voice mail for her boss saying I wouldn't be calling or emailing anymore and gave them my attorney's phone number. Suddenly I had 7 or 8 guys in my yard, assuring me that they would do the whole patio over at no further cost to me, starting farther back and correcting the design (like it was in the d*** drawing!!), and that they wanted me to be 100% satisfied. As they all left one guy kind of hung back and quietly said, yep, she measured wrong. They took all the pavers up and redid it. It looks beautiful. However, they made cracks in my basement walls because they had to bring the little bulldozing/earthmoving machine back two additional times. I should have dealt with that right away but I was really overwhelmed and exhausted from fighting with them. I really need to get an estimate on fixing those soon, before they get worse. I'm getting knots in my stomach just from typing this up. I had lots of sleepless nights over this project. I wish I had gone to an attorney right from the beginning and saved myself a lot of grief. It just drove me nuts that they wouldn't admit that they screwed up. I now have a beautiful, low-maintenance backyard but the cost was HIGH in terms of time, energy and stress.
Description of Work: landscaped my small back yard, trees, shrubs and decorative grass - and installed a patio.

I was very happy with English Gardens Landscape Department. We had a couple of trees taken down. I was very pleased with their services despite the fact that they messed up removing one tree. When taking down the tree it fell the wrong way and took out another tree that was suppose to stay. They went out of their way to find a great replacement tree, which I ended up liking more than the original. They handled the mistake very well and I was definitely pleased.

The first time using them is the most expensive because we had to buy the lights and greenery. But they came back and took everything down and boxed it up for us to store for the next year. They did a beautiful job. Our neighbors commented on how beautiful our house looked. I would recommend them to others.
Description of Work: This report is for Holiday Decorating. They came out and hung up a wreath above the door. They also hung up lights and greenery on our front porch and in our trees in the front and back yard.

I spent a hour with Vance Resig and he seemed like a nice man and seemed to understand my needs. It was early April and I expressed my desire to have the project completed by late May. He said that would be possible. The first landscape plan I saw was so limited that it was useless. By the time they finished the second plan it was May 30th. I had to call for 2 weeks to get them to deliver the plan. It was merely average in quality. I am an advanced gardener and could have done a better plan myself, however thought that calling in a pro would be helpful. I was not very impressed with their promptness or level of landscaping talent. I hired another company to do the actual landscaping work. English Gardens never did seem to want to do the landscaping. And the $750 price was supposed to be prorated off any landscaping I hired them to do, which they don't seem to be interested in doing!
Description of Work: I paid English Gardens to do a complete landscape plan for my 1/2 acre house which needed a rehab on its aging and nonexistent landscaping.
