Garage door warped and old system w/no sensors. I was not sure what to do and I called A-1 garage door repair. The guy came same day and fixed the garage door so I can use it for many years to come. In addition he showed me a samle of door and gave me a brochure on what options I have in case I would like to change the garage door f=to a newer system and what option I had. I was very grateful that I did not have to replace it right away because I was doing a lot of projects on the house and did not want to spend money on the garage door. The guy (sorry I forgot his name) was very knowlegable and also oiled the beam and some other things...he even tested the garage door to see if it stops and is good to keep and showed me everything he did. I was very pleased. He also left a magnet with the company name next to my garage door opener and I will for sure call them again to install my new garage door. Great job! When the serviceman arrived, he first tried the electrical button. It worked! I was shocked and immediately commented, "I'm spending $85 for nothing!" The serviceman acknowledged my comment. At that time, I guess to do some type of service, he sprayed the tracks and did a minor something else, but it certainly was not a 10 point inspection. (Had I known then what I learned via my BBB complaint, I would have refused any 'service.') But expecting to at least get about a 10% senior discount, I requested same. I was told that was not available. I asked the serviceman to call his boss which he did. I was told again that he could not give me the sr. discount. I wrote on the receipt "No sr. discount!" to be sure the company knew of my dissatisfaction in writing. To add insult, there was a set $5.95 gasoline, etc., surcharge which had not been disclosed over the phone, so I paid $90.95 for what I had thought would be at most a $76.50 fee (had there been a minimal 10% sr discount on the original $85 quote with no undisclosed fixed charges). I sent an email to the company later that day to which David Eckes replied, giving no satisfaction. I then emailed the BBB for what I thought was a discrepancy in advertising: no sr. discount & undisclosed fixed charges. Within days, the BBB replied with A-1s response (still giving no satisfaction), further stating that since the business had "addressed the disputed issues" that they had closed the complaint. Wondering how the BBB could close a complaint when falsehoods had been expressed and I as the consumer had no option of reply, I recontacted the BBB. I will not bother you with the details of subsequent BBB contact, but I did learn one important fact. Mr. Eckes stated to the BBB that they "always state when giving a quote that if the serviceman shows up and determines what the problem is (after a 15 point inspection - I had been told 10), if the homeowner does not want any work done - not a problem. We collect our $49.95 and move on to the next job." I had never been told of that option in my initial phone contact. The serviceman did not offer me that option when I commented that "I'm paying for nothing since the door is working." So now, not only was I out my sr discount and had paid an undisclosed $5.95 beyond the phone quote, but found out totally by accident that I was deprived of the option to pay only $49.95 (+$5.95?) vs $90.95. In the final reply from A-1, I was offered a $15 credit toward future work with the company. I advised the BBB that I had no intention of ever hiring A-1, so their offer was of zero value. The BBB did nothing. I then contacted the Attorney General's office. They only send letters which a business can easily ignore. Perhaps if someone reads this, they will think about my experience. By the way, the company has since removed the "senior discounts available" from their ads.

This was a BAD experience. On my initial phone call, the owner spent more time asking about how I would pay him rather than the problem. The technician insisted that the bottom two panels (half the garage door) would need to be replaced, although I couldn’t see (and he couldn’t point out) anything wrong except the bent bottom panel. He couldn’t estimate the price but wanted me to sign the contract on the spot. When I said I didn’t feel comfortable signing an “open-ended” contract, he insisted that this was an easy fix and wouldn’t cost more than $200. For that, I said OK and signed. They insisted that I pay the $49 estimate fee, although I had a “free estimate” coupon. Monday they called back and said the price would be $780! He got rude when I explained what the technician told me. He asked me the color of the door and I said I didn’t know the specific color, and he sarcastically said “You don’t know the color of your own garage?..…well you know it might not match.” I said I assumed the technician wrote down the color when he came out, so it better match, and that was a stupid question to ask. He said, "You calling me stupid?" "You calling me stupid?" Their contract is one-sided. It states they charge a 3% “convenience charge” if you use a credit card, and you agree to waive your right to dispute the credit card transaction (is that even legal?) A week later I had another company do the job for a total of $160. Only the bottom panel needed to be replaced.

Came out for initial repair as promised (late, but phoned). Improperly installed one strut. Have been calling for warranty service call for 2 weeks. Has failed to arrive for 2 appointments. Claims the truck broke down twice. Address listed is a UPS Store. I dealt with David Eckes who says he is the owner. They came yesterday, 6/9/08 and did the warranty work after I stopped payment to VISA. Arrived late.

I was very pleased. The sales representative showed up as scheduled to explain my options and give me an estimate. Then he returned a couple days later as scheduled to install the new unit. The installer was Dennis, he took the time to explain how the unit functions and how I can maintain my garage door to keep it working properly. He cleaned up when finished, the opener works perfectly.

My garage door started falling in on me at 3:45pm. My son and I secured it open. I recalled saving a coupon that read "save until needed". That time was now. (I love coupons like that). I called up A-1 Door Systems at 4pm. I explained what happened. I also said that it was NOT an emergency call. (They also offer that kind of service). I was told that they would have their servicemen out to us between 10 and 2, tomorrow. So, at 11:45am I was called by Rick and he said he was a few miles away and he would see me in a few minutes. 12pm, and here they are. We went back and Rick and Dennis assessed the door and prepared an estimate. we talked about the content and agreed to have the work done. It only took about an hour and I will say, I am impressed. My "old" garage door is acting like a new one. It is so quiet and smooth. I also got a 10 year warranty on my springs and rollers, 2 years on my hinges and 1 year on the labor. I felt, as the customer, that I was valued and respected. I feel that A-1 Door Systems as a company delivers a great service and I wouldnt hesitate to recommend them to anyone. Color me one happy customer.

They came right out the same day and had it fixed in less than hour. That's excellent service. He knew exactly what the problem was and was honest enough to tell me I didn't need a new opener. He was very professional.
