+ -1 moreWe bought our home just prior to the lockdown in 2020. The home had not been painted in 15 years and was in desperate need. We have high ceilings, 20 wood cased windows, many closets, and massive amounts of decorative woodwork and built-ins that had to be painted. There was a lot of repair work and prep that needed to be done. We chose custom paint colors, with Ernie’s help. The finished product was, and two years later, still is absolutely gorgeous. But I really want to talk about Ernie and his crew - all professional and talented painters. When the job started, there was a crew of 5 - and then a week into the job the lockdown began. The house was empty, so they were able to break the house into zones and continued painting, but 2 of the crew had to drop out because of COVID concerns. At the end of the second week, painting was declared “non-essential” which put Ernie and us in a difficult position. The third week there was one painter to finish the job - he took cabinet doors home with him and set up a spray tent and finished them at night after painting all day at the house. Ernie and his crew went above and beyond to complete our job so we could move in…it was a very challenging time! Ernie was fantastic at following up with us, and true to his word came back to our house when the lockdown ended to walk around and look at the work. Together we identified areas that needed touch-up and he sent a painter who spent a day at our house making sure everything was perfect. These painters showed up on time, worked all day, and totally cleaned up after themselves. They were a pleasure to work with, and Ernie provided excellent insight as we made decisions about colors and layout of spaces. I would use CertaPro and Ernie again and highly recommend them as painting contractors.

+ -1 moreI had contracted with them to paint a front porch and all exterior window trims. They showed up and were bound and determined to be done in a day, even though they used that to cut corners. Trims were only painted on the face, not the edges; sashes only painted on the face, not cut into the glazing, soffit vents painted over even though I specifically told them to be careful, paint chips and rags left on the ground, two-color scheme on front porch, even though they taped, was un-even and sloppy, nails were not set and caulked, areas that were caulked were not re-caulked.

+ 2 morePhenomenal! We could not have asked for a better transformation of our home. Since 2003 when it was first purchased, there was a gaudy purple and blue color that my wife and I desperately wanted to change. Once the resources ($) were available we finally kicked off the project after having found CertaPro (Ernest Starr) at the Novi Home Improvement Show this past January. After discussing our project with him we felt it would be a great fit as he also understood what we were trying to accomplish with our old home. The project kicked off in early June after a few delays from a wet Spring, no fault of theirs. They set up the necessary ground cover and went about power washing the home to get all the loose paint off. They did a nice clean up afterward. From there the crew set about caulking and fixing wood as they worked around the house. It was at this time they noted a number of areas that really needed some TLC due to rotted / damaged wood, etc. Ernest and his crew helped point out what they thought should be done to really make the house nice. They then allowed me two weeks to fix what I could, after which they returned and started right back up again. The main body was done via a power sprayer, two coats and proper back brushing, after having primed any bare wood sections. From there all the trim work and moldings were completed by paint brush / roller and they did an excellent job. The lines were crisp and the color coverage was done properly. The crew leader Victor was always a pleasure to talk to, very cordial and really seemed to be enjoying the work at hand, as was the rest of the team. In the end it took 1-1/2 months to complete the job which was more than reasonable considering the size of the project and having to work around the weather. They also completed on the very day that we requested that it be done, even working the final Sunday to keep on schedule. The house looks amazing now and we continue to get compliments from family, friends, and complete strangers. We love to look at the house now and are very pleased with the result. Was this expensive to do? Absolutely, but we have no regrets with our choice in painter. These guys did a really nice job, we would certainly recommend them.
Description of Work: The job was to completely paint the exterior of our 1883 Victorian home that has wood siding. This was no small task as the home has many windows, high rooflines, and a requirement that five(!) colors be used, in true Victorian home style.

Description of Work: I have a 2800 sf brick house, and the upper portion is stucco that I was having painted. What is NOT clear about CertaPro is that they use sub-contractors. The people you meet, build a rapport with, and sign a contract with are NOT the people who come to paint your house. They send sub-contractors that you have not made any connection with. The sub-contractor came out during the last week in June and basically stalled me with paint selections and excuses because he had another job running into my time slot by a week. My job was supposed to start in June 2013, and instead, the contractors showed up to paint my house on July 4th. Yes, it was the holiday. My house was supposed to be FINISHED before that, as I as planning to have a family BBQ. Instead, I was stuck at home with 5 ppl who were supposed to paint. Sadly, only 2 or 3 of the guys were really painting while the 'bosses' were sitting around, or leaving the job site to do 'whatever'. By day-3 I was growing weary of them and their conversations that they didn't realize were being heard through the bedroom and/or bathroom windows. I heard complaints about how they weren't making s**t on this job, and weren't getting paid what they thought, along with other profanities and inappropriate discussions. Three of the 5 guys were NOT professional painters, and were the son/nephews of the seasoned painters. Because these young late teen/early 20s guys were learning how to use the paint gun, they were overshooting the dark sections and covering the light areas as well. Therefore, they had to use extra paint to cover the dark paint they got on the light trim - that's, why they didn't make much money on the job. They probably had to buy at least 3 extra gallons of paint. They even changed the color of my garage door without asking even though the rest of the beige trim was remaining the same. They were cooperative about repainting it to the right color, but it cost them more product, and me more time. On the last day they were rushing so much to finish the job before it rained, the finishes were sloppy. They didn't want to and did not paint my front entry door to match the freshly painted trim around it; they put the windows back in my storm door with only a portion of the clamps that belonged there so it rattled, left the corner ornaments off, and put my handle back on with 1 screw rather than ALL of them. When it started to pour on my fresh, wet paint, they didn't give much attention to the areas I asked them to touch up. These young guys even cleaned their paint brushes against the back of my house and poured the paint-filled water from their bushes under my pine tree - as though they could hide it. I called the CertaPro owner back out to check out this sloppy job, and he agreed that it should have been better. The owner came in 2013, and came again in 2014, (I had to call the corporate office) and then finally completed the warranty repair work in 2015 - just weeks before the 2-yr warranty expired. Within the 2 year warranty period, I had several areas where the Sherwin Williams exterior paint was peeling. I suspect because the areas were not scraped properly when the house was painted.

They worked in a professional way. They were not goofing off. They came and did their job and they left. They cleaned up after themselves. It was about average.

+ -1 moreErnie was very professional and listened to my explanations about our project. Painting the garage and one side of the house where the chimney was rebuilt. Their price and his attitude made me decide to go with his company. He sent me a quote a few days later after we met. I gathered all my other quotes from different companies then I contacted him to let him know, we chose his company for our project. I also asked him to come out one more time to finalize the details, and give me a final quote. He did. He wrote everything down, suggested things, so everything went well. However, when I received his second proposal, there were items in it that we did not discuss that he will charge for it, and he did not include the notes he took when he was at our house. So I sent him an email to ask him to correct his proposal. He did not respond. Then I called him twice, left voice messages both times about a week apart, but he did not respond. Today, I called him to let him know that I don't want to use his company anymore, and that I am very disappointed with how he handled this whole thing. He texted me back that he appologize and he is very busy. Don't tell me he is that busy, that he can't even text me or shoot me an email. So good luck Ernie, but your business attitude is not for me. + -1 moreI needed my deck refinished and called them to schedule a free estimate. I got voice mail. The next day a man called me back, took a ton of information, and then didn't even schedule an appointment! He told me "someone would call me within 2 business days to schedule an estimate." No one ever called. I called back, they apologized, and I was told again someone would call me "soon". 3 days later they called me to schedule the estimate, but then no one showed up at the scheduled time, or called me.
Description of Work: Ignore my calls, promise to show up and stand me up, waste my time.

The only reason I didn't score the quality as excellent is because I found a couple imperfections (after close inspection).
