Woke up Saturday morning and there wasn't any water pressure in my house. I have a well. After checking for an obvious malfunction and not finding one I looked in the phone book for a company that does well repair work. There are not any well drilling companies in my home town of Midland, MI. I found Brad Malley Well Drilling, Inc. They are located in Mt. Pleasant, MI. About 30 miles away. I called (989) 772-2765 and the dispatcher put me in contact with Ron (989)252-1354. I described over the phone the problem. Ron was great. He made some suggestions on how I may be able to fix the problem myself. I was very impressed that he did that and didn't try to get an expensive service call for what might turn out to be an easy fix. After trying the things Brad suggested (cleaning the contacts on my pressure switch and checking the wires for corrosion at my well head) the pump still didn't work. I even replaced the breaker in my electrical panel and wired the pressure switch to by-pass the switch. Still no pump. So I was pretty sure I had a bad pump. I called Ron back and asked if he could replace the pump. He said he could be there within the hour. He showed up with a helper within the hour. He was a very nice guy. I told him I didn't know anything about well pumps. He explained what he was doing every step of the way. He even "let me" :-) help him pull the pump from the well. Very heavy! I think it was down there about 150 feet. He had several pumps on his truck and we found a replacement pump of the correct horsepower. Brad also checked my bladder tank pressure and found it was too low. He pressured up the tank to the correct pressure. I now have better pressure in my house. I suspect my pump will also be turning off and on less helping to extend its life. You should get 20 years out of a well pump and I only got 14 years out of mine. Of course I use mine for the house and the sprinkler system. So maybe 14 years isn't that bad. Pump was $550 and the labor was $200. I was happy with the $200 labor charge for a Saturday call. I marked very score as an A except price and quality for only one reason. $550 is a mid-range price for a well pump. You can get high-end pumps from Goulds for about $600 - $900. Some pumps you can get as low as $350. Only suggestion to Brad Mally Well Drilling is to have a selection of pumps on the truck or at the shop to offer the customer. Low,medium and high end pumps to choose from. I would call this supplier again.
