Family owned and operated serving Michigan with Quality service at affordable prices!

"Very well. Contractor was skilled at his trade, drywall was installed, taped, and mudded in a timely and skillful manner. He was/is punctual in keeping appointment and doing the work. Gave an estimate for the job that was reasonable. When done he cleaned up the work area. Jerry did such a nice job that my wife and I will keep his card and contact him in the future for home remodeling projects."

The Chimney Doctor provides top-to-bottom service for your chimney and fireplace needs. Cleaning, brick repair, rain caps, waterproofing, fireplace repair, etc. You name it, we do it. Chimney Cleaning and Repair - Member National Chimney Sweep Guild, Nationally Certified by the Chimney Safety Institute of America, Licensed and Insured.

"Without question, I would recommend The Chimney Doctor, Midland, MI. Bob Sciba (owner) was quick to respond to my email (within 24 hours) and scheduled a follow-up. Andrew and Bracken came out to do the jobs, and I couldn't be more pleased. Upon review of the detailed inspection, they discovered the chimney cap was rusted, and in need of replacement. They took pictures and showed me the rust and holes that developed over the 15 years we've had the home. Andrew and Bracken couldn't do the chimney cap job on the initial day and scheduled to return the following Saturday to replace the chimney cap. During the replacement process, Andrew discovered a plate or cover that was cheap in quality. He could have used it, but he thought it was too flimsy, and not a quality piece. They went above and beyond service and drove back to their shop in Midland (I live in Saginaw) to get a replacement part that would meet their standard of quality. They could have used the old plate and finish the job a lot earlier...it was Saturday after all....but they didn't. Both Andrew and Bracken did what was in the best interest of the customer....they did what was right. That's integrity, my friends. Andrew and Bracken arrived at 9 am, and the completed the job around 12:30. The price was more than fair....no additional fee for having to return to Midland for the plate. Andrew and Bracken are two guys you can trust. They're professional and courteous. They have your best interests in mind. I highly recommend The Chimney Doctor. Tom M. Saginaw, MI"

i am a small business. i do all the work myself with a little help from my son. primarily in the hearth appliance field. including wood, gas, and pellet fuels. installation and maintenance of fireplaces, hearth appliances, and chimneys.

"Great service. Came out and repaired and cleaned fireplaces and checked the bricks and mortar. Charged me $100 to come out. Chimney place in Holly wanted $329 for 1st fireplace and $299 for 2nd fireplace to come out. That price included a mandatory cleaning. Crazy!! Sanford was reasonable, efficient, and friendly. Definitely recommend."

Chimney sweeping services FAQs

While it’s possible to sweep your own chimney, it’s usually not a good idea for two reasons. First, inexperienced DIYers are more likely to miss areas of the chimney, which still leaves the risk of house fire due to the remaining residue. Second, chimney sweeping seems like a simple process, but it’s highly dangerous. Soot and creosote are both carcinogenic and can cause breathing issues and lung damage. If you don’t take the same safety precautions that professionals do, you could be putting yourself at risk of serious bodily harm.

You should plan to ask your chimney sweeper questions about the cleaning process they intend to use, the project timeline, and more to get a sense of which professional is right for the job:

  • What is your process for cleaning chimneys?

  • How long will the process take?

  • Will you protect my floors from soot and debris?

  • Will you do a chimney inspection, too?

  • Do you have certification from the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) or the National Fire Institute (NFI)?

  • Will you need access to my roof?

The average cost for a professional chimney cleaning is around $250, but prices range from $130 to $400 or more, depending on a few factors. Some things that have an impact on your total include the size of your chimney, the number of chimneys cleaned, and how accessible the chimneys are.

In some cases, you don’t need to do anything to prepare for chimney sweeping, but professionals always appreciate leaving the area clean and easy to access. As such, it’s a good idea to move fireplace accessories like screens and fire tending tools out of the way, and lay down tarps of drop cloths around your fireplace opening to help keep your floors clean. Laying down a plastic sheet under those cloths or tarps is a good idea if your fireplace is surrounded by carpeting, just to add extra protection. Finally, secure any pets or children away from the work area.

The National Fire Prevention Agency (NFPA) recommends chimney sweeping once per year as a means of avoiding house fires and massive property damage. Over time, creosote and soot build up in your chimney from burning wood and a lack of ventilation. These compounds are both highly flammable, which means a build-up of them inside your chimney puts you at an increased risk of house fire. Chimney sweeping removes any residue and helps reduce the risk of property damage and personal injury from fire.
